Plaxico Burress to visit with Giants, coach Tom Coughlin on Wednesday

By Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger

The thought of Plaxico Burress walking into the Giants’ facility Wednesday, sitting down at a table across from Tom Coughlin and speaking about a potential return to the Giants is, well...

"It’s going to be crazy," Burress said by phone tonight from his Jersey home.

Indeed. But with a few words, it could all become a lot saner.

The player who caught the Super Bowl XLII-winning touchdown but then turned the 2008 Giants’ season on its head when he accidentally shot himself in a Manhattan night club is here to talk to that same team about perhaps taking his first 2011 snap in the same uniform.

Burress, who criticized Coughlin’s hard-driving ways in a recent ESPN interview, will discuss all of his issues with his former coach, who recently agreed to explore the possibility of re-signing the player he fined and suspended on many occasions from 2005-08.

"I really don’t know what I’m going to say," Burress said. "I’m just going to go in there tomorrow and speak from the heart, be truthful with him and let him know how I feel. Whatever comes out is going to come out.

"I’m pretty sure there are things he wants to say, too."

Burress has said plenty already. And when asked about the way his comments were construed as his saying he’d never want to play for Coughlin again, Burress laughed and said, "It’s not like I wasn’t telling the truth."

He added of the reaction to his comments, "It doesn’t bother me at all. All the things that I had to say, I’m pretty sure when we meet tomorrow, when we sit down face-to-face, we’re going to lay it all on the table, man to man. That’s what this whole thing is about. That’s where I’m at. If there’s a time for everything to be let out, it’s now."

The time could be right for Burress to return to the Giants, who have a major question mark at receiver because of the knee injury suffered by Steve Smith last season. Smith, who set the franchise record with 107 receptions in 2009, injured the cartilage in his knee last year and had to undergo microfracture surgery which has led to a delicate recovery.

The Giants obviously realize the 33-year-old Burress, who had 33 touchdowns in four regular seasons in East Rutherford, can potentially help their receiving corps. ESPN, which first reported the Giants' serious interest in re-signing Burress, reported Burress flew into the Jersey area earlier today.

"I think that’s certainly something we’re going to talk about and have talked about," team president John Mara said of Burress during an interview on "The Michael Kay Show" on 1050-AM ESPN Radio earlier this week. "Where that goes, I don’t know."

Burress, who will turn 34 next month, isn’t sure either. For now, he’s simply looking forward to the opportunity to see some members of the organization with whom he hasn’t spoken since before he was released and sent to prison for 20 months.

"It’s going to be good to see some people I didn’t get the chance to say things to that need to be said," he said. "There are a lot of great people there. It’ll just be good to be there and then get down to business."

Speaking of business, Burress said the Giants are the only team currently on his list of visits. While he’s talking to other teams — the Texans, Rams and Bears are in play — he isn’t currently planning to sit down with them.

"No, I’m not going to do that," he said. "I’m not going to travel all over the world."

Truth is, he might make only one visit.

"I’m not sure," he said when asked if the Giants are the favorite to land him right now. "I do love New York. My fan base here has been great to me. But it’s not just about football; there are just a lot of things that go into it.

"But after this I’ll know a lot more. Without a doubt, without question."

Two days spent visiting the Giants. I thought there was no chance Plax would be back, he just might. S. SMith on the chopping block like the two hurt linemen were?

I have to trust in Reese, he did a great job with the WRs when Plax was gone and fans were pushing for Braylon Edwards a few years ago. I think there is a plan, either some FA or maybe Beatty and Koets are ready to start. Can't rule out Andrews coming back, how good can the offers be with his bad back.

M. Garafolo

UPDATE Burress believed he would be headed to the Giants' facility on Wednesday. Truth is, that's not allowed, per the NFL rules on the abbreviated offseason. What's unclear right now is whether an off-site meeting with a free agent is permissible.

Damn :(
Giants will get a compensatory pick at least, he was a RFA. They couldn't match the offer six-year, $36 million deal with $12.5 million guaranteedMike Garafolo twitter. Oh you mean on Plax? Sneaking suspicion it's gonna happen.

Plax signing with the Giants would result in the maximum fantasy value for him versus any other team he could go to b/c of his knowledge of the offense, relationship with Manning and the injury & somewhat lackluster play last year of Steve Smith.

The question is; would this knock Nicks down a little as potentially the #2, have no real effect or boost him because Plax will draw coverage?

If Nicks and Plax are on the field at the same time, it wont be Plax initially drawing coverage. This would benefit both I would say(Pending Burress is still anywhere close to form), however I am still much more concerned about our OL, and defense. Thanks for the constant updates Net!

I recently heard an interview with Ernie Acorsi and he said one if the main reasons they traded for Plax was because the Eagles were going hard after him. He explained that if the Eagles had TO and Plax at the same time, they would never be able to defend 2 huge receivers like that. So as much as they wanted Plax, it was also a defensive move to keep him away from Philly. With that in mind, I have to believe the same thing is happening right now. Sure they would like to have him back, but if the Eagles were to get Plax to go along with DJax, it would be a huge challenge for them to defend.

This. They both would benefit, but the player who would benefit the most would certainly be Eli. Nicks, Plax, Manningham & maybe Steve Smith on the field at the same time.....scary.

With how tight the cap is squeezing the Giants, I'm guessing there is more to this than a co*k block.Mike GarafoloUPDATE: Plax can't have a face to face with Coughlin at Giants facility or neutral site. It is against the rules for this short FA period. All the deals that have been going on have been over the phone w/ out player visits. Plax and Coughlin will speak by phone today.(paraphrased from several tweets)

Breaking: Center David Baas has agreed to terms with the Giants, according to a league source.

OK who is David Bass guys. Starter for us or depth?
Giants agreed to terms with C David Baas, a source tells the Sacramento Bee.It's a major blow to the Niners, as retaining Baas was expected to be their No. 1 priority. Eric Heitmann's career is in doubt due to a neck injury and Baas was the top center on the market. Meanwhile, the Giants get an upgrade on soon-to-be released Shaun O'Hara and still have Adam Koets for depth. It's an underrated yet strong move for the G-Men. Baas is from Michigan was with SF. Ranks poorly for pass protection efficiency by PFF. He isn't on PFF's list of top FA centers. I'd say he'll compete with a healthy Koets. If Koets isn't healthy, Bass is the likely starter. Beat writers say don't count out Seubert being signed when healthy.

Mike Garafolo

Working on Baas, have another story in the oven + perhaps sometime today I'll blog about Giants' putting up a decent fight for Cofield. #nyg :boxing:

UPDATE: Garafolo should have said "the Giants put up a decent fight for Cofield."

Cofield's agent said the Giants offer was better than expected.

Giants have made offers to S. Smith (NYG) and Bradshaw

Source: Baas to sign a deal with the Giants

The 49ers must begin looking for a new anchor to their young offensive line after David Baas agreed to a deal with the New York York Giants, according to a league source. The 49ers are believed to have pursued Baas heavily, but "it just didn't work out," the source said. No deals can be completed until Friday afternoon.

After quarterback Alex Smith, Baas was the team's most important offensive free agent to re-sign. He started all 16 games last season in place of injured Eric Heitmann, and he played well. Heitmann, the team's long-time center, had neck surgery earlier this year and will not play this season.

Baas, meanwhile, indicated in June that he would return to the 49ers. He flew to San Jose from Florida to take part in one of the practices at a Smith-run minicamp, and he picked up a copy of the playbook. Baas lined up as the starting center in those drills.

"Yeah, I have a feeling that they definitely, that they want me back," he said at the time. "And like I said, I want to be back. I've got my house out here, a lot of things that I'm still hanging onto. But I'm just preparing and when the time comes, everything will work out."

Baas' departure means the 49ers may be more likely to re-sign another free agent, Tony Wragge, who is the only player on the team who has started an NFL game at center. Adam Snyder has been practicing there this offseason. Other options include the team's two draft picks, Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person, neither of whom played center in college, and undrafted Stanford center Chase Beeler.

Free agent DeAngelo Williams is expected to choose between the Panthers, Broncos, and Giants on Wednesday.

According to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi, the Panthers have a "slight lead." Last we heard, the Broncos were making defensive line (Cullen Jenkins? Aubrayo Franklin?) a priority over running back. The Giants reportedly have Williams as a Plan B behind Ahmad Bradshaw. We should have an answer on free agency's most important fantasy factor by this evening. Giants & R Bernard have been unable to agree 2 a contract restructure. @AdamSchefter reports Giants plan to release him.

Jacobs has left. No change to his contract status of yet, source says. Still talking.

----------------------------------------------

Another cut?

 Ahmad Bradshaw - RB - Giants According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, the Dolphins have emerged as the favorites to land free agent Ahmad Bradshaw.

"I've been hearing a lot of momentum about Bradshaw to Miami," reported La Canfora Wednesday afternoon. DeAngelo Williams just knocked it out of the park with a ridiculous contract from the Panthers, and Bradshaw should be able to come pretty close. The Fins are being highly aggressive today, targeting their new feature back and new starting quarterback (likely Kyle Orton). Related: DolphinsJul 27, 1:49 PM

I think Canty will be asked about restructuring next.

ClaytonESPN: The Dolphins have renewed talks with Ronnie Brown. Makes you wonder if they wonder if they can get Ahmad Bradshaw.

Omar Kelly

I'm being told Ahmad Bradshaw has exited the Dolphins' price range. Look for him to return to the Giants unless terms change on his requests

Don't the Dolphins have more cap room than the Giants?
I think they do, but they are going after Orton and other FAs. Miami probably isn't willing to spend a whole lot more for Bradshaw than they could sign Ronnie Brown for and with having 2nd round pick invested in a Rookie RB.

Mike Garafolo

Go time, Will Beatty. RT @TheJRob: David Diehl moving from LT to LG, according to source. #nyg He will lose about $750,000 in move.

--------------------------------------------------

Hope it sticks, Diehl & Snee at guard, with Baas coming in, the Giants should get a big push in the middle of the line. Diehl was a terrible LT last year and average the years before.

Yeah that’s what I figured. It looks like Bradshaw is losing some of his leverage

Madison Hedgecock's release won't be a surprise after you read this: he's been playing with degenerative disc disease, he said.

Godtdamn !!!! The Giants are boring !!!!!!!

Do they ever make the obvious smart move?

[*]Pass up Ingram in the draft - Bradshaw is fumbling FA and Jacobs is a complainer and a moron

[*]Lose Cofield and don't even consider Haynesworth for a 5t round pick

[*]Desperately need a MLB - Stephen Tullock is available but no luv form the Giants

[*]Depleted at WR - Tons of wrs available but Giants not interested

[*]Getting thin at DE (kiwi injured) and want to trade Osi

The Giants have cap issues so I doubt they can afford half the guys you mention I have no problem with them passing on Ingram in the draft. Too much value when Prince fell to them to pass up.

They tried to resign Cofield but were outbid. They have two 2nd round picks at DT (Austin and Joseph) that will have to step up plus there is the cap issues so Haynesworth was probably too expensive. They will probably add a lesser known vet to the rotation.

Would love to see Tulloch but doubt the Giants can afford him plus he doesn’t really fit with the Giants size/speed philosophy.

The Giants already have some very good depth at the WR position I doubt they are going to spend a lot of money on a free agent at that position

Who says they WANT to trade Osi? He isn’t happy but he is under contract for 2 more years I doubt they WANT to trade him.

Doesn't mean they like it. They aren't going to be like the Bengals and do nothing. They'll try to work things out or move him.I don't have a problem with the Giants developing LBs. The Giants have a highly ranked defense as it is, they can get by as the young guys develop.

Marvin Austin is exciting, before missing a year he had a 1st round draft grade. Despite not playing that year he was a stand-out at the East-west Shrine game.

Mark Herzlich had a 1st round grade before his cancer diagnosis. Team doctors confirmed he was cancer free Oct. 2009 and started all 13 games in 2010 just not up to his prior level, which is understandable.

He had a bone cancer, Lance Armstrong had testicular cancer that spread to his abdomen, lungs and brain, so it was a severe illness as well. Both had chemotherapy. Armstrong had his last dose of chemotherapy Dec 1996 and began training a little over a year later, Jan. 1998 and placed 4th in a race that took place in Sept. 1998. In July 1999 Armstrong won the Tour de France.

It took Armstrong 1year and 9 months to get back to competitive shape. Herzlich was back in action in less than a year. This season Herzlich be about two years removed from his last chemotherapy treatment. So he's in line with the timeline that Armstrong is an example of. Herzlich may take this season to regain his old form, but it's not impossible that he won't get back to what he once was.
