Thanks to DH for the updates. Makes perfect sense re: Vick / DeSean.

By the way - DeSean HAS TO REPORT BY 8/9. According to the new CBA, you don't get an accrued season unless you're in camp by then - so he won't risk missing that date.

Heard Mike Missanelli on ESPN this AM shedding light on Maclin. That concerns me quite a bit as I have Maclin worth more to Philly than DeSean as a steady contributor (and a great compliment to DeSean's big play abilities). I hope that works itself out.

As for LB - obviously the biggest issue now on defense. Who can they bring in? IIRC Tulloch and Ruud signed, is that right (not that Ruud's a good fit).

What about this idea - Asante for D. Levy in Detroit.....

Let's try this again, third time's a charm hopefully:

1. Vick's extension is close. In fact, I would expect it to be announced very soon. DeSean's will get done, but it's not nearly as close. My opinion is that one is tied to another. No way Vick's cap number will be as high as it is now for this year and a lot of that money saved will go to Jackson.

2. Expect some LBs in here sooner than later as 'they're not happy with the depth at the position' (my retort was 'yeah, no kidding. I couldn't name three LB on the team much less three starting ones' ;) ).

3. You know what they said about Samuel not going anywhere. Yeah....don't believe it. If they get the right deal, he's gone. They've talked to three teams already (he was hush, hush on the teams).

4. Look for MJG to be back soon for some O-line depth. I'm frankly shocked it hasn't happened yet.
 DH.1) Vick's extension is obvious, glad to hear from the horse's mouth though it's looming

2) We all know DJax isn't going anywhere, and as Pasquino noted, the new rules make it impossible for a lengthy holdout. He'll show up, pout a bit, and then play. If he produces and stays on the field, they'll make the numbers work. We all know that.

3) LB is looking ROUGH right now. Playing Casey Matthews at MLB? Chaney and Clayton have potential, but it's just potential for now. Beyond that we're talking about rookies Lloyd and Rolle. Not. A. Good. Look.

4) I'm of mixed mind on Samuel. I get that trading him helps in many ways. We'll get more picks. We'll free up cap space. And we'll keep him from being a locker room problem. But I would LOVE in an ideal world to keep him and have DRC in the nickel. Wow that would be tremendous.

5) I was wondering about Jean-Gilles. The Mathis signing was solid IMHO and with he and Vandervelde in the fold (and obviously Danny Watkins), wasn't sure there was a place for Big Max anymore.

Ruud signed a one-year deal with Tennessee. Not that the Eagles would be interested in any or all of these guys, but here are the best FA linebackers left on the market:

[*]Manny Lawson (OLB) -- Probably not a good fit as he's more of a 3-4 rush OLB

[*]Stephen Cooper (ILB) -- I love Cooper, but he's another 3-4 guy (inside though) and wants big dough

[*]Channing Crowder (ILB) -- The Fins seemed to be high on Crowder, but then released him unceremoniously. He's young and tough, could see trying him at MLB but I'm not holding my breath

[*]Ben Leber (OLB) -- A 4-3 weakside LB in Minny. Never made a ton of plays, but would be a clear upgrade over what we have on the roster

[*]Rocky McIntosh (ILB) -- McIntosh had a productive season inside as a 3-4 guy last year, but I think he could play OLB for us

[*]Kirk Morrison (ILB) -- Morrison is my personal top choice in terms of need and yet someone I could see the Eagles grabbing. He's a tackling machine and can play the 4-3 MLB spot for us immediately. He's not as old as I thought either (29)

[*]Lofa Tatupu (ILB) -- I know Tatupu is going to be a guy lots of people hope we sign, but his injuries give me pause. I would rather have someone like Morrison

Its funny reading the first page of this thread now. We've come a long way this off season.
Anyone remember the 'LeCharles Bentley' offseason? Hes not even in football anymore... been a long time
Sheesh, I completely forgot about that one. Freak accident. May never have happened had he signed here. Who knows. We've certainly come a long way in making big splashes in the market. I'm liking the combination of Roseman and Banner so far. Roseman has a vision and Banner tells him how it fits under the cap.

So the Bunkley trade never happened?

@TonyGrossi#Browns GM Tom Heckert on Brodrick Bunkley: "You'll have to talk to Philadelphia about that one."
@MaryKayCabot#Browns GM Tom Heckert was asked about absent DT Brodrick Bunkley and was vague. Said "absolutely nothing'' to report. Said talk to Philly.
@twithersAP Tom WithersHeckert adamant about not discussing Bunkley situation. Eagles announced trade Satuday. "I'm not confirming anything," Heckert said.
@Btags4 Dan BattagliaThe Eagles have some issues with the thought to be done Bunkley deal, trade may be dead. Details will come out

What did Missanelli say about Maclin?
Maclin had mononucleosis back in March and still is dealing with something now, though nobody is saying what it is. Missanelli said that he saw Maclin recently and he had lost about 20 lbs. Hopefully, whatever he has, he can recover quickly and get on the field. As Jeff said, he is a big part of this offense.

Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley a no-show so far at Browns training camp

Published: Monday, August 01, 2011, 2:36 PM

Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND -- The Eagles announced Saturday that they traded defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley to the Browns for a fifth-round pick in 2012, but Bunkley has not shown up for training camp -- and the Browns will not confirm that the trade ever took place.

Browns general manager Tom Heckert said today he had "absolutely nothing'' to report on Bunkley because the Browns never acknowledged the trade in the first place. "You'll have to talk to Philadelphia,'' said Heckert.

So for now, it's unclear whether the trade is falling through, whether it actually took place or whether or not Bunkley will ever show up. Bunkley was the 14th overall pick of the Eagles out of Florida State when Heckert was general manager there in 2006.

He said he wasn't in camp yet and that was a bigger deal than had been talked about. I don't recall if he said that he's seen Maclin or if he's just heard it, but something about losing 20lbs - which Maclin really doesn't have to spare. He basically raised the concern up that while everyone was talking about DeSean's holdout, the Maclin story was getting lost in the shuffle. I agree that it is a big deal.

Bunkley headed to Denver:

Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley will be going to Denver instead of Cleveland. The Eagles and the Browns had agreed to terms on a trade Saturday that would send the Eagles' former first-round pick from 2006 to Cleveland in exchange for a 2012 fifth-round draft pick. However, Bunkley did not report to Browns training camp on Monday, so the Eagles had to find a new trading partner. The Eagles found it in the Denver Broncos, who will ship a draft pick in 2013 in return.Bunkley was made expendable when the Eagles agreed to terms on a five-year deal with free agent defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins.
http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/article-1/DT-Bunkley-Headed-For-Broncos/9aadc0f8-8c08-4764-8eaf-c0787f97bfdcBummer that it's now a 2013 pick, but I'm hoping it's now better than a 5 due to the wait...

2, What? You mean all those late round picks they been hyping up and stuffing down our faces the past two years..they aren't happy with? Shocker..and frankly makes you wonder why they didn't resign Bradley. He was still the best of the bunch and should be fully recovered i think with his knee. 4. THIS...even though I don't like MJG, depth has been a concern for a while now and even moreso with Justice on the pup & Watkins not signed yet.

Watkins is now signed:

The Eagles have agreed to terms with first-round pick Danny Watkins on a four-year deal. The offensive lineman from Baylor is expected to be on the field when the team resumes practice Wednesday morning ...Watkins, 26, is expected to slot in as the starting right guard, though he has missed five days of practice since training camp began. The former firefighter stands at 6-3, 310, and figures to be a mauler in the run game for the Eagles under new offensive line coach Howard Mudd. He's also well versed in pass protection, as he played left tackle at Baylor. There is plenty of depth on the interior line, so Watkins will face some competition for the starting role from the likes of Mike McGlynn, A.Q. Shipley, fellow rookie Julian Vandervelde and free-agent acquisition Evan Mathis.

Have the Cowboys lost their closer?

SAN ANTONIO – The Dallas Cowboys have never lacked for drama in training camp. There was the time a backup quarterback from Abilene Christian sucker-punched Roger Staubach. And I was in Oxnard, Calif., the morning starting quarterback Quincy Carter was summoned from his hotel room and told to leave while still wearing pajamas.

Still, Friday's pursuit of cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has to rank as one of the most bizarre scenes of the past 51 years. Reporters took to Twitter to provide play-by-play of conversations involving Jerry Jones, his son Stephen and new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Word had spread the Cowboys were in a bidding war with the New York Jets for the services of the All-Pro cornerback. Cowboys sources had told me for weeks that Asomugha wasn't a real possibility, but on this afternoon, it seemed that Jones was determined to make a splash.

Then it happened. The Fist Bump heard ‘round the world. When reporters saw the Jones boys "blow it up" on the sideline, they believed it to be a sign that Asomugha was headed to the Alamo City. And that gained traction with reports the Jets had pulled out of the bidding process.

Stephen had told reporters that he was worried about a potential third team being involved, and his instincts were correct. Both the Cowboys and Jets were outflanked by the stealthy Philadelphia Eagles. Absolutely no one saw it coming, which is quite a feat in the Twitter age. A few months ago, some of us had listed the Eagles as the No. 1 suitor for Asomugha, but we'd been lulled to sleep by their trade of quarterback Kevin Kolb for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Surely two top-flight cornerbacks were enough for one team.

It turns out that Eagles president Joe Banner and GM Howie Roseman had put together the most aggressive plan for free agency we've seen in years. They weren't able to pry left tackle Doug Free away from the Cowboys, so they secretly hatched a plan to land the biggest name in free agency.

And like Carlos Guillen of the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, the Eagles lingered at home plate and admired their work a little bit Friday evening. Roseman and Banner both supported the theory that Asomugha left money on the table with other teams because he always wanted to play for the Eagles. And right or wrong, Reid and his colleagues have created the perception that everyone else in the NFC East is playing for second place.

In an amusing bit of theater Saturday, the wild-haired Ryan suggested the Cowboys had never been interested in Asomugha. Ryan was apparently pulled from practice to discuss proposed deals with defensive ends Marcus Spears and Kenyon Coleman. It was a laughable explanation, but I don't fault him for wanting to show faith in the players on his roster. Or to be clear, the players the Eagles have allowed the Cowboys to retain.

The elder Jones, never one to guard his heart, was a bit more transparent. He sounded like a beaten man while doing a radio interview with the club's flagship station. And he acknowledged to reporters Saturday that he was disappointed to see the Eagles add more talent, partly at his expense.

"They've gotten better and we know [Asomugha] is an outstanding player," said Jones. "We have all the respect in the world for them anyway. They're going to be a formidable team and you knew they were. But if he's going to go someplace, I don't like it that he's playing for the Eagles. We've got to play him twice a year."

Don't look now, but the Eagles are in Jerry's head. I understand the Eagles had far more flexibility from a salary cap standpoint coming out of the lockout, but in the past, Jones has earned a reputation for being a closer. I don't exactly think he's lost his edge in that department, but it's pretty obvious the Eagles have become much more of a destination team than the Cowboys. I criticized the Eagles for signing Michael Vick a couple years ago, but now the guy's become an excellent recruiting tool.

There's a belief right now that Philadelphia will do whatever it takes to win a Super Bowl. Banner, the numbers guy for the Eagles, suggests the organization is driven by coming up just short so many times during the Reid era.

Over the past few days, it's almost felt like the Eagles were working off two blueprints for free agency – theirs and the Cowboys. When they signed former Packers defensive end Cullen Jenkins on Saturday, it seemed they were piling on. Jenkins is used to playing in a 3-4 scheme, but that didn't faze the Eagles, who are trying to address what was an anemic pass rush last season.

Perhaps the Eagles are taking their cues from their neighbors, the Phillies, who know a thing or two about breaking the hearts of North Texas fans (see Cliff Lee).

Maybe losing out on Asomugha will be a blessing in disguise for the Cowboys. If the Cowboys are able to acquire talent at guard, safety and perhaps receiver with the money they would've spent on the talented corner, it could turn out to be a good thing.

But it would've been a whole lot easier to make that argument had Asomugha landed with the Jets. That way, the Cowboys would've only seen him once in 2011.

Now, it looks like they'll be seeing him for years to come.

I would be happy with a Peters/Mathis/Jackson/Watkins/Herremans OL with the best out of McGlynn, Dunlap, MJG, Howard, rookies providing depth. That said, knowing that Mudd will field the best team inspires confidence.

LOL @ that Watkins artcile

There is plenty of depth on the interior line, so Watkins will face some competition for the starting role from the likes of Mike McGlynn, A.Q. Shipley, fellow rookie Julian Vandervelde and free-agent acquisition Evan Mathis.

So we have McGlynn & Mathis basically as depth with McGlynn being both G & C depth. Mathis may end up starting depending on Justice

RE: Punter. I agree we could use a vet but this kid has got a leg. Here are some notes from camp:

I'm not paying attention when the fans start "OOH'ing and AHH'ing." I turn to see what's up and the football is a mile in the air from a Chas Henry punt. Absolute bomb. He has my attention now.- Henry hits another moon ball into the wind. Good distance too. Wow. Impressive. Bigtime leg.- Next punt is a low wobbler. Bad punt.- Now Henry is punting with the wind. Crushes one. 60+ yards, with hang time. Wow.- 33 yarder this time. Another wobbler.- Another wobbler for 40. Noel Devine muffs it.- 65 yarder with the wind. I'll repeat - This guy has a rocket for a leg. He even gets a great response from Shady, who yells out "YEAH SAV!"- 35 yarder with hangtime into wind.- Bomb again. And another muff, this time by Locke.

Ruud signed a one-year deal with Tennessee.

Nice list, it is always funny how some of the positions take back seat to the more dramtsaic signings. After seeing the list, I would love the Eagles to bring in any of those guys to workout and see how they do. I am sure Nnamdi can help taklk Kirk into coming to Philly for pretty cheap, and Morrison was pretty beastly when he played in Oakland (not sure how he did last year). I do feel better there are some good experienced players out there, and my guess is once the Eagles start to see what they have they can bring one of those guys in. Cooper's price will likely go down as we move along, and he would be liked by the fans here quite a bitSurprised some of those guys are still available. Just a weird free agency period with those guys, the veteran RB's not getting much attn., and Zach Miller still being ignored to a point

Manny Lawson signed a one-year deal with Cincy tonight, which shows you that there was almost no market for him. One nitpick on Zach Miller, make no mistake there's a HUGE market for him, it's just that until the last few days no one thought he was really on the market. He wanted to be a Raider, and Oakland presumably wanted him to remain. A lot of people think he's taking the trip to Seattle just to light a fire under the Raiders management, but we'll see. Either way, he's elite and teams would fall over to get him if they thought they could.

screw signing a LB. sign randy moss to our pro bowl offense and we will just score 50 points every week.

seriously, though, i'd like to see them bring in randy moss. and a lb.

Tim McManus was just on 97.5 the Fanatic and said that he was getting unconfirmed reports that Maclin has reported to camp, ready to go. They are off today (seems a little early to be taking a day off already?) but signs pointing to him getting into the mix tomorrow, FWIW.

 Not only from my favorite teams point, he is also one of my recievers on fantasy. Really need him to be over this mono.

This is unreal. It's like agents are getting in line to talk to Philly about their players coming there (and ignoring many other teams). That's an exaggeration I'm sure, but this is crazy.

Now if Philly gets some LB help, this is an off-season to remember. A FO with $ management skills + a team players want to play for = dream off-season.

Come on down, Kirk Morrison, and let's get the ball rolling.

"Ronnie Brown was between 4 teams: Eagles, Chargers, Ravens and Rams. The lowest contract offer he got? Philadelphia. Not about the money."

The Vick effect is insane. I would love for Kirk or Crowder - both for same and different reasons. Kirk is a pro's pro and a tackling machine. He would be my #1 choice. Channing is solid, but is swaggerlicious. He loves to pick fights and is nasty, and I like that in defensive players, especially from the MIKE. I'd throw out Lofa there too, depending on what level of injury risk he is...still a young guy.

i don't reall understand the "Vick effect". If i am a WR or something, ok he may influence me coming to Philadelphia, but i really don't know why people are saying there is a Vick effect with the Eagles off-season. we can probably say he isn't hurting the Eagles, but i think the front office and the way the team is managed deserve more credit then Vick. This seems like something WIP would create for the sake of being able to talk about the Eagles and not give them any credit after bashing them year after year

Read some quotes of players around the league man. The guys LOVE him. Watching him is very very entertaining. So even if you are a defensive guy, you might be watching every snap on the sidelines as opposed to a boring offense. I mean, Cowboys PLAYERS were coming up to him after the game asking him to sign his shoes on TV after a game for christ sake!! I can assure you that Lesean McCoy, Nate Allen or Trent Cole will be asking for an autograph on TV from any of their divisional rivals anytime soon...Dude, Vick is over 30 now. The NFL is a young man's sport. All of these guys remember as kids watching him at VTech or when he was on the cover of Madden, or that one play against Minnesota...etc. You get the point. I agree that the way the organization is built, guys wanna come here. But look at the numbers of the contracts these guys are signing. They are coming in at discounts. Big time ones at that. Maybe its just a perfect storm and you are right, there is minimal Vick effect. But pretty much every news outlet and quote from players re: the subject gives evidence to the contrary...

Wow. I can't remember ever seeing an off-season this strong by Philly...and probably not by any team in several years.

Great offseason for Philly. The Eagles are clearly the favorites to win the East and I'd say 2nd in line behind the Packers in odds to get to the SB in the NFC.

Who's the backup QB in Philly?
