Not sure what to say fellas.
I've been defending Andy for a looooooooooooong time. And while I still think there's less than 10% chance the next guy is as good as the current guy, I'm also exhausted trying to defend Big Red, too.
If we take a step back and consider why this season is unraveling, even the most ardent Reid supporters (myself included) can't lay blame:
1) Juan Castillo -- Castillo is outmatched. Not only are we playing horrible defense, but we're giving up big leads in the 2nd half, at home, to (arguably) inferior teams (talent wise). Even if you want to argue he needs time to grow into the role, that's no excuse. The Eagles brass made it clear they were going all in this year, which is exactly NOT the time to experiment with a major coaching change.
Decision to name Castillo defensive coordinator? = ANDY REID
2) Horrendous Linebacking & Safety Play -- We really don't need to go through the issues, they're staring us in the face each and every week. But the fact remains our LBs may be the worst in the league and are CERTAINLY the worst I've seen in my years going to games as a season ticket holder. For a team that had this "master plan" in free agency, there's no way we can/should buy into the idea that they simply had no alternatives. Given how much we did in free agency and with new contracts, we OBVIOUSLY could have entertained LB as a key position, but CHOSE not to. While I realize Banner and Roseman have more power than they used to, Andy still has final say on all personnel decisions and gets the check to prove it.
Decision to rely on our current LB and S crop? = ANDY REID
3) Poor Offensive Line Play -- I listened to an interesting debate on the drive down to the Linc yesterday where one of the talking heads was trying to say our offensive line was GOOD and people were wrong to criticize. His logic? That SURE Mike Vick had been hit 57 times in three games, but we were 2nd in the league in rushing.

Needless to say we're 2nd in the league in rushing in no small part because our QB runs like a gazelle, many times for his life. Shady McCoy has been AWESOME, but being a good offensive line is about doing both run and pass blocking. You can't get an "F" in pass blocking and have a "B" in run blocking offset that. It's still an "F." Now we ALL were enthusiastic about bringing Howard Mudd aboard, but maybe we overvalued his contribution. Maybe we forgot just how much Peyton's masterful quarterbacking and quick release were responsible for the Mudd lines looking good.
Decision to hire Howard Mudd and give him carte blanche to rebuild the line in his image? = ANDY REID
Look, my son is 8 years old and his coaches break down film every week making sure the kids know to attack the upcoming opponents weaknesses. At their age, usually those weaknesses are permanent. For example, you can't "adjust" if your offensive line weight 65 pounds on average, or if your receivers don't know how to catch over their shoulder. At 8, you exploit those weaknesses. If a team is able to adjust, THEN you try something else.
In the NFL, it's no different. Well, the only difference is the NFL is supposed to be a league of elite professionals where adjustments are happening ALL THE TIME, in real time, on the fly. It's a chess match where the team that's the most disciplined and versatile can make the better adjustments and end up with the win.
Right now, how do we adjust? I would argue (not being a professional) that it has to start with a re-thinking of the "Wide 9." Sure, it's making Cole and Babin look like studs. But honestly, our LBs are about as ill suited to the scheme as imaginable. Is Andy willing to neuter his long-time assistant and friend? He needs to, because absent that I can't see how we fix things. We benched Matthews. We put Nate Allen back into the lineup. It. Did. Not. Matter.
