I mean homers can be brutal in Fenway for LHH if you can't go the other way, but he can. Also that huge gap in RC is inviting and he's just not hitting it there. He actually is slugging better at home than he is away, so Fenway has less to do with it than we might think. Walks are WAY down, and he has a .630 OPS with no one on base. He's still hitting with RISP, near 1.000 OPS there but everything else is just a mess. I mean last year he was pretty good, when he was in San Diego I thought he was one of the best hitters in baseball. The injuries to Ellsbury, Crawford and Pedroia certainly have hurt but you'd still think he'd get into a few now and again. I'm going to guess his shoulder was never right, or relapsed. I know he had a good half his first year in Boston but the popless profile you mention screams injury. Usually guys in decline sacrifice contact for power(see teixera) but he's got little. I think the league. Change hasn't helped. That might explain a good start going around the league and then a fall off. I think eastern teams(re: the Yankees) do some phenromenal game plannig from an advance scouting perspective, and your holes will be found with more determination than being on a lesser light in the nl west. You didnt need a book on him, just pitch around him. Finally, sprinkle in some good old fashiOned humanity in trying to justify big money in a pressure cooker market and you get a guy who'll press and expand his zone. I'm not so tied up in pop psychology of big market/small market, bu as I believe that some rise on a bigger stage, it makes sense some might shrink. In the Rays/Nationals game it appears that Joel Peralta got caught with his glove in the cookie jar because before he could even get a pitch Davey Johnson asks to have the glove inspected and it was taken for investigation. not one pitch and he was out of the game.

People think I'm crazy but I'm 100% for this. Some guys like Axford seem so obvious, but I watch a ton of relivers in particular looking for the signs and I think I see them a lot. Pretty much my point. Two-handed catches don't look cool. Dropping a ball while attempting a one-handed catch looks MUCH cooler.
I like Maddon but he's wrong here. I say cheat when you can but if you're cheating it's up to the other guy to figure it out. The cat and mouse game with things like this are one of the underrated nuggets of joy that baseball provides, Johnson was right.
Maddon was saying postgame that he didn't like the way that Davey villified Perlata and he says that pine tar in a pitcher's glove is a common practice. He said if you checked gloves across baseball, you'd find a lot of pine tar.Peralta was very upset after the game and said he really didn't want to know who called for the check. Apparently he's very close to the Nats first base coach who was a father figure to him in minors.

There's really no reason for Johnson to do what he did unless he wanted to make Peralta and the Rays look bad.Not a great move by Maddon, but even as a Nats fan I can understand why he might be a little miffed. Someone on the Nats could have easily pulled Maddon aside and told him they know Peralta doctors the ball. That way he could either not use Peralta in a key spot this series, or should make damn sure he's clean if they do send him out there.
