** Official 2014 Philadelphia Eagles Thread ** (1 Viewer)

The only reason I brought it up was he was a top notch OLB prospect and PFF raves about his effency as a pass rusher.

With the Colts taking Jerry Hughes Idk if Graham makes it to the second. Hughes actually resurrected his career with double digit sacks this year in Buf after getting traded. He was considered a huge bust as well even though he was stuck behind two of the greates pass rushers in this era. It would kill me to see Graham do that for another team with that being such a need.
Graham wasn't making it to the 24th pick on almost ANYONE's draft board. If you go back and read the 2010 forum, most fans were happy with the move. Deranged Hermit said he was the teams #1 DE and that other teams coveted him in the middle of the first.... and he raved about the pick. As did Jason Wood, and many other posters, e specially after seeing Mayock (who is usually pretty darn accurate) put him at #11 overall.Hindsight is 20/20, it seems ridiculous to be saying that was a bad pick, when at the time most analysts and fans were happy with the pick. Of course it didn't work out, but history would be totally changed. Maybe we would have done better and had a worse draft pick and never gotten Foles. Maybe our D with E.Thomas would have been good enough to get us into the playoffs the last few years and Andy kept his job and we would be mediocre again for years. Everything could have changed, and I'm pretty sure we are all happy with where this team is right now.... it could have been a lot worse had we selected Thomas over Graham. At the time, the pick was great... it didn't work out, but we need to move on and be happy things went that way and we have the team we do now.
I loved Graham coming out of college. I'm a Michigan fan, so I saw him play 90% of his games and I thought he was a stud in the making. Who knows what would have happened had he not gotten hurt early on?

Just seems like one of those "it's a good call if it works, bad if it doesn't". Payton is always praised for the balls he had to onside kick to start 2nd half of the superbowl. Had it not worked, it would have been one of the WORST coaching decisions ever. The result doesn't always make the decision good/bad. If Graham became the stud or DPOY that many fans/experts/analysts predicted he would be, we'd be praising the pick, but because he turned out worse then ANYONE expected, we re-live this bad decision for years and years.

Just think we can't go back, and going back and making that might have made us an Andy-coached, Vick-led, 9 win team again with not much to look forward to... I'm pretty happy with the team the way it is right now and wouldn't change too much about the past as it could totally change the current situation.
This is why you should NEVER, EVER, use a Hot Tub Time Machine.....

The problem we had at the time was that DE was not a need. They drafted so many failed DE's in the first. They obviously felt it was a need though because they just cut Babin who then blew up and drafted Graham who they then proceeded to not play for much of the year at DE. They just could not get out of their own way.Their is no hindsight 20/20 in this case. We needed a stud safety. They moved up in a position to get one and then drafted a DE.And yes, we may have had Andy for a bit longer but whatever. It still stings. Just like Mamula over Sapp stings.

Or Andy still would have failed anyway because of incredibly poor coaching and now we'd have Earl Thomas on a Chip Kelly team instead of nobody.Yea it's all what if but it's still one of the biggest bone head decisions in draft history. To not just make the wrong pick with the obvious glaring need in front of our face and the BPA sitting ahead of "their guy" on pretty much every draft board, but to trade up to get the guy.
Maybe he turns into Nate Allen (gulp)...

But anyway, focusing on next season? Draft projections all over the board for the Eagles - I've seen LB, CB, DL, WR...

I read at Philly.com that all they talked to at the first Senior Bowl practice were defensive players.

Bill Musgrave hired as QB coach, since he worked great wonders with Ponder.
He was OC there for 3 years and could be a decent QB coach. Let's hope he's as good a hire as Shurmer and Davis lol
NFL experience. He's not calling plays. There's worse guys out there.
I agree with Bigboy and Insein here.

Most thought a few of last years coaching hires by the inaugural Roseman/Kelly regime were head scratchers. So far it seems, to me, they know what they are doing......at least they haven't given me reason to think otherwise. I'm okay with this coaching hire at present time.

MOBILE, Ala. – For NFL scouting departments, preparing for the draft is a year-round job.

For coaching staffs, though, that’s not the case.

<a href="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adj/a.site195.tmus/eagles;tile=2;dcopt=ist;pos=;sz=300x250;!c=mercedes;ord=123456789?" target="_blank"><img src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/test.site195.tmus/articles;tile=2;sz=300x250;ord=123456789?" border="0" alt="" /></a>
Eagles coaches had last week off, some time to relax and recharge after a long and promising season. This week they turned the page to the offseason. Chip Kelly and his staff are at the Senior Bowl watching practices, interviewing prospects and working off a list provided to them by Howie Roseman.

“You want to make sure that you’re putting in front of him [Kelly] players that fit what he’s looking for and that he can evaluate them as well,” Roseman said. “Our first job as a personnel department is to try and narrow it down. We spend a lot of time on 600 guys, making it down to 400, making it down to 200, making it down to a manageable number for our coaches. We do that, and there’s a lot of trust on their part of us doing that, making sure that when they come out here and go: ‘Hey why isn’t this guy on my list?’ We can explain it pretty quickly to them why we got rid of that guy and why we’ve narrowed it down.”

The number right now is between 150 and 200 prospects, Roseman said. There are several players participating in the Senior Bowl who have already been crossed off the Eagles’ list because they’re bad fits.

The draft board is set in pencil, not pen. Coaches will get a closer look at prospects, the Senior Bowl and scouting combine will factor in, and the Eagles will have to get their ducks in a row by the time the draft rolls around in May.

“It’s hard to spend a lot of time on 250 to 300 guys,” Roseman said. “It’s hard for our coaching staff. It’s hard for our personnel staff to spend the months of February, March and April chasing around 250 guys and making sure we know a lot.

“We talk a lot as a scouting staff knowing a lot about a little instead of a little about a lot. And that’s really important for us because at the end of the day we’re only pulling seven, eight, nine names off the board. And we’re maybe adding 10 free agents, so we’re only really making decisions on 20 guys. And if we’re right on 60 percent of them, we’re gonna do a phenomenal job. So let’s make sure the guys that we like we’re spending a lot of time on knowing everything we can so there’s not as many surprises.”

BIG PEOPLE: JORDAN MATTHEWS

Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews was impressive today. At just under 6-3, 209 pounds, he looked like a man among boys during some of the drills.

Matthews had 112 catches for 1,477 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He is Mel Kiper Jr.’s seventh-ranked receiver, but that could change and he could go off the board in the first two rounds.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Matthews is someone the Eagles take a closer look at in the coming weeks.

SPORTS SCIENCE

The whole sports science thing apparently extends to the draft process. After practice is over, reporters, scouts and coaches are allowed onto the field to talk to the prospects.

The Eagles have a contingent of two to three people who go up to specific prospects with a measuring tape and measure the circumference of their knees and wrists.

Jimmy Kempski of Philly.com took a photo which we’ll link to when it’s posted, but the guess is that this has something to do with potential weight gain.

If anyone with a background in this field knows why it would be the knee and wrist specifically, feel free to e-mail me at skapadia@phillymag.com

New QB CoachPosted: January 21st, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 38 Comments »

I’ll write about the Senior Bowl later. For now, the big news is that the Eagles hired a new QB coach, Bill Musgrave.

Musgrave was the OC for the Vikings for the previous 3 seasons. He’s been in college and pro football since 1997. Musgrave is a graduate of Oregon and played for the Niners in the early 90′s. He knows the WCO inside-out. Interestingly, Musgrave and Bill Lazor had coaching jobs with the University of Virginia, the Skins and the Falcons before coming to the Eagles.

Musgrave coached QBs for the Eagles in 1998. About midseason, with the offense struggling at a historically bad pace, Ray Rhodes let Musgrave start calling the plays. The offense immediately picked up. Musgrave wasn’t retained when Andy Reid took over in 1999.

Let’s look at some of Musgrave’s best work.

1999 – QB Coach of the Panthers – Steve Beuerlein threw for 4,436 yards and 36 TDs

2001-02 – QB Coach/OC for Virginia – developed Matt Schaub into a top college player and good pro prospect

2003-04 – OC/QB Coach of the Jaguars – helped develop rookie QB Byron Leftwich

2008-09 – QB Coach of the Falcons – helped develop rookie QB Matt Ryan

The Eagles needed to hire a QB coach who had experience. They couldn’t afford to go with a young player since Nick Foles is in such a critical stage in his career. He’s an ascending player, but still needs work. He needs a coach who has successfully developed QBs already. Musgrave fits this description. He’s also worked well with bigger QBs that are mostly pocket passers. Kinda sounds like Nick Foles.

The Eagles passing game is a mixture of the spread and the WCO. Musgrave knows how to teach QBs the footwork needed to run the WCO. That is a timing based offense and it is critical for the QB to be precise with his steps so that he can get the ball out on time. Receivers will be at specific landmarks and need the ball at the right time.

I like the fact that Musgrave has worked with so many young QBs. That tells you he knows how to teach and that’s important since Foles still has a lot of learning left to do.

I think Chip Kelly has done a good job with replacing his first departed coach

Just take the BPA...and I'm hoping that is either a DB or a pass-rushing OLB. It would be exciting to see them trade up to get one of them too
I don't want a rb or qb with the first pick but after that I just want the best player available I don't care if its an offensive lineman, Wr or defensive player. I think Howie and his staff are doing a very good job with adding coaches and players and I wouldn't change his concept. When you start worrying about needs you come away with drafts like Reid and banner had the last few years they filled holes with guys like Watkins and Graham.

Just add a few mid range free agents at SS, DT and OLB and resign Cooper, Maclin and dare I say Nate Allen. Then you add whatever you do in the draft and if they are good players they will find a way to help you win now or in the very near future.

Totally agree. I'm very interetsed to see how the draft starting later will effect how teams approach the draft. Having the extra time to fill needs via FA could allow more teams to draft BPA and not have to pick a guy they need.

Agreed

He drops passes too frequently. That's a big deal to me. Other than that, I like him.
I know he had the one day at the Senior Bowl where he had issues but I dont watch or follow enough Vandy football to know. Is it an ongoing issue with him?

I wouldn't want QB/RB at pick 2 either. I'd even say to avoid BPA at RB/QB until at least round 4.

Anyone else like to see the Eagles sign RFA Dan Bailey away from the Cowgirls? Kickoff stats are good not great at 63.5 touchback % but he is money from 55 and in and it hurts a division foe. Front loaded contract would be tough for the Girls to match.
Love this idea. In the regular season finale, when the Cowboys got the ball back, I thought we are dead because Bailey's going to nail any field goal inside of 55 yards. Thankfully, Orton made sure that did not happen.

All of his FG's seem to go right down the middle. I would love that on the Eagles.
I don't know what would have been better... us signing him, or the cowboys signing him to that ridiculous contract extension.

I agree about rb there really is no spot for any rb unless its someone who can help a lot in the return game. As for Qb it depends on who falls and what the Eagles do in free agency if all they have is Barkley then I wouldn't mind taking in the 2nd or 3rd. You never know when your starter will go down. Im not a college guru at all but I would like to see Tajh Boyd in Eagle green

I'm ok with keeping our options open, but a 2nd round cb/olb/etc would be huge for us. And once you get into rounds 3, 4, 5... we're not gonna get a qb who is ready to jump in as our backup qb if Foles goes down. I wouldn't want to have barkley and another rookie qb trying to both develop at the same time... there's not enough snaps in practice for them and not many nfl teams have a situation with both backups being 1st or 2nd year qbs. If Foles was a Manning or Brady that's a different story as those are proven vets who can help develop the young guys, but Foles is still developing himself a little bit.

Too many holes for us to be looking for RB/QB/TE in the first 5 rounds I think. Would love to go 4 defensive players and 1 wr in first 5 rounds.

If I heard correctly, the cowboys now have three of the only seven players signed through 2019. Granted not all the money is guaranteed but man as an Eagles fan, you gotta love Jerry being the GM. That contract for Baily is madness!

Dee Ford's been great during the Senior Bowl practices, has two sacks and a pass deflection in the first half of the game. Could be a target at #22.

http://igglesblitz.com/2014/01/wr-update-2/

Nice piece on the WR situation. They bring up things like the Eagles being the only team to know how healthy Maclin is. Cooper's next contract will be in his 30s so he might just take the money knowing this could be his last chance at a decent contract. Avant has a roster bonus due on March 15, so the decision on him will been soon.

Under the days of Joe Banner, the Eagles might try to really squeeze both players due to their situations. I expect Howie Roseman and the new Cap people to be a bit more reasonable. The Eagles will not overpay for either Maclin or Cooper, but I think taking the right tone can make a difference with both players.
That brought back the TO memories, yikes

So LaMichael James doesn't want to be a 9er anymore.

"I'd rather they just let me go"

"I didn't get hacked and personally no 1 has any idea what I'm talking about but if I tweet anything it's always about Ftball"

Wonder if Chip would trade Bryce Brown for LMJ straight up.

I hope not.

On the plus side, at least we know we had zero shot against Seattle. So the you never know crowd can just zip it now.

Chancellor is the most impressive of that secondary. Man, he was all over the place tonight.
His size and speed remind me of Dawk a lot. It's going to be a tough task beating that defense who is young and I think is signed for at least through next year.

I was going to avoid him for a while anyway. I only heard bits and pieces yesterday, but he seemed fired up (again) that the Eagles need a running QB. "Kaepernick had more success against the Seattle D then a pocket passer like Manning" "NFL is changing, can't win without a mobile QB".

He just can't admit he might have been wrong about Foles.

:bye:

Wonder what was said. I assume this was company email because if it was his private email or twitter account what justification they have for suspending him. I don't usually agree with Mike but this seems like a weird situation. What could he have said to a long time harasser that finally gets him suspended?
