***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Because he is ignorant. I don't like ignorance. I could care less whether he likes the sport or not just have a modicum of intelligence.
I came into a thread and gave a very real answer:

Then I was attacked... Cry a little? Big tough guy soccer fan!
It's a question of culture and history. Baseball has over a century, soccer has essentially 18 years (MLS).

I've mentioned it before ad nauseum, but my generation (mid 40s) were the first to grow up en masse playing soccer... and that was without a single thought of doing it professionally since that wasn't an option. Our parents knew nothing about the sport, but we played it anyways. Now my generation's kids get knowledgable parents AND a professional league to watch live plus the infinite leagues to watch on TV (none of which was available in my youth).

And for kids, it's a sport where everybody's a part of the action due to the fluidity of how the team works on the field.

Baseball was my main sport until I started playing soccer seriously. It's the only sport more boring to play (unless you're pitching or hitting) than to watch. And I use the word "sport" loosely- basically, as long as you've got good hand-eye, you're good to go. Pretty similar to bowling or darts in terms of skill-sets. Ok, yeah- occasionally you have to run a few yards, so that differentiates it from those others.

Looks like Lahm started in DM with Khedira, but was subbed off at HT for Oezil. Also looks like they started with Mueller up front and Schuerrle, Kroos, Reus behind. Podolski came on for Reus after the injury. Schuerrle just made in 1-0 early second half.

Ghana's witch doctor strikes again!

Raphael Honigstein@honigstein 10s

Reus hobbling off the pitch with Müller-Wohlfahrt (German team doc) shaking his head. doesn't look good at all

Ankle rolls are impossible to judge IMO. Could have all kinds of #### torn or be OK in a week. They say anything else about it yet?
Just that he's been taken away. Agreed - there's so much hype that everyone speculates, but he could be fine tomorrow.

Brazil is 0-0 at half against Serbia, playing very carefully on a crappy wet pitch.

J.César

Alves, Silva, Luiz, Marcelo

Paulinho, Luiz Gustavo, Oscar

Hulk, Fred, Neymar

report says taken to the hospital. not sure if that is standard or not...

5-1 germany

Miroslav Klose has just become Germany's all-time leading scorer, passing Gerd Müller with his 69th international goal.

wow... I wasn't aware that he was close to Muller. for such a goal-scoring monster, like Muller, he still just doesn't rate up there with the world's greats.

6-1. I know its Armenia but thats how you get ready for the WC... and Armenia is in the cup so its not like it was canada.
Armenia is in what cup?

Armenia finished 5th in a group of 6 in qualifying only beating out Malta.

I was a bit surprised when I looked up Armenia myself. I thought they were a true minnow but they are not a terrible side at all. Ranked at 38 just a hair below a team like Turkey. I think I confused them with a team like Estonia.

Well, that poll got a little embarrassing for fantasylhucks
he is definitely not Huck IMO.

The poll is beyond embarrassing for him especially as he tried to fix the question in his favor and it still blew up in his face.

Shame he is not man enough to stand up to the bet.

Portugal v. Messico about to kick off. As mentioned Ronaldo out, along with Pepe and Miereles

Bild is reporting Reus is out of the WC w/ ankle ligament damage
ein Teilriss des vorderen Syndesmosebandes oberhalb des linken Sprunggelenks
A partial tear of the anterior ligament above the left ankle. I can't find an actual translation of Syndesmosebandes so I don't know if it's actually naming the exact ligament.

Dammit, I hate hearing about these last minute injuries- even to a guy like Giuseppe #### You Rossi.

Watching the US last week, I really noticed the vets like Bradley and Dempsey taking the foot off the gas the last 15 minutes or so avoiding tackles and backing off 50/50 balls. Having the 2-0 lead helped.

After looking through the ever growing list of players affected, the US has been very fortunate so far.

Some random US notes from the twitter world

* DMB, Fab, Cam and Besler stayed together throughout training yesterday. There is a very good chance they are the starting back 4 today

* Davis got hurt and could not participate in the team practice. People said it did not look like a big deal

* From some pictures I saw, it looked like there were more fans watching practice (cue Allen Iverson), yesterday than used to be at games I went to in the early 90's.

please no diamond, please no diamond....

Landon is considering joining the broadcast team for some of the WC. I hope he doesn't.

The awkwardness is going to horrible if the team performs badly.

..............Howard

Fab.....Cam.......Besler.......DMB

................Jozy............Dempsey

Midfielders are Bedoya, Bradley, Beckerman and Jones. I have no idea how this will look. Jones at right half?

looks like 4-3-3?
Bedoya as a forward I assume in your formation? But then that puts Bradley at left half I think since it would be suicide to put Beckerman out there.

This is odd to say the least.

Can we do a 4-2-3-1 with this?

Dempsey............Bradley.............Bedoya
