***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (4 Viewers)

In my World Cup random team selection I did with 3 other friends:

Argentina, Italy, Uruguay, USA, Mexico, South Korea, Iran, and Algeria.

Some real stinkers in there, but at least I got Argentina.

Any realistic shot for Italy or Uruguay?
Of winning the World Cup? Not IMO. Of making a semi-final or even a finals run? Sure. Group D is helped by drawing Group C in the knockout rounds. Group C has some good teams (Colombia and Ivory Coast), but no monsters.

http://croatiantimes.com/news/Sports/2014-06-12/35750/Croats_prefer_football_to_sex

Almost 9 out of 10 Croatians, whose football team takes on Brazil at the opening of the World Cup on Thursday, said they would rather watch the contest than have sex. A poll by local polling agency Ipsos Puls said 88 percent of Croats would prefer to watch the live TV coverage than have a passionate night with their lover. The poll was done among 1,000 married people aged from 30 to 50. Many said they would give up sex for a month if it was a choice between that and watching the World Cup final on TV. Thirty percent said they had purchased a second TV set to make sure there were no disruptions during the World Cup if the first set broke. Croatia's best World Cup result was 3rd place in 1998 in France.
Well, yeah. Sex with the old lady is 10 times better than a WC match but the game lasts 30 times longer.
You only watch the first 30 minutes of the games?

World Cup Smartphone apps: what are you using?

I am looking for suggestions or preference for the soccer apps that you will be using during the World Cup. Maybe even your experience in using any of the ones listed below?

My preferred soccer app is OneFootball (not the Brasil one), but I do like FutMob for some things so I think I will be using both of them (at least at first). I do have the paid version of FutMob so I have been using them more and more lately (hello USLPro), but OneFootball is easily still my preference. I believe that each also provides some in-game audio for the World Cup. The MLS Matchday app looks like they will have full WC coverage as well... but I do not think I will be using that app for WC coverage as I barely use it for MLS coverage.

I have the TuneIn Radio app that I will use if I am in the car while a game is on, I am pretty sure they carry the BBC broadcast of the games by way of TalkSport. All of the games are also supposed to be available on the ESPN Radio app, but I am not really a big ESPN fan so I do not have it installed...

That being said, I did install the WatchESPN app so i could watch games when there is no TV available, or use the pitch view as a second screen on my tablet. I have not had a whole bunch of luck with that app so far for live events (especially with ChromeCast), and am hoping it is just my crappy home wifi that was the issue.

Has anyone looked into the FIFA app? Is there anything there worth checking out? Am I overlooking anything obvious? What else is out there that I should be aware of?

P.S. I usually leave a LiveScore.com window open on my desktop while games are in progress, but I am open to a better suggestion there too.

whoa... some analysts in the UK, including Lawro, is backing the US to make it out of group, at Portugal's expense... interesting... and all are basing it on a belief in Klinsmann.
we did beat them in 2002 and they are notorious underachievers.
Link?Lost the last two tournaments to the eventual winners, Spain(0-1 & on PKs-semis and first knockout). Germany in the quarters of Euro 08 and the second place team France in 06(semis)

If constantly getting to the semis/quarters makes them notorious underachievers, then everyone is an underachiever except Spain?

In the World Cup pool we have 35 entries, 9 (25.71%) of which has the US advancing from group play.

That first game should be interesting - I am hoping one team wins, rather than a draw. But either way, I think Germany will be ripe for an upset in game 3.

I had a gut feeling last night that the heat, bad field conditions, and travel would end up leading the US and Ghana out of the group on fitness.

Luckily I thought this after I did all my pool/contest entries :)

Hmm, minus goal difference - I'll take a guess that South Korea was one of the teams that did that last time out.

For the other guess I'll say Mexico.

I don’t mean this post to be a “you kids don’t know how good you have it” post, but it fits so perfectly.

Growing up I knew nothing about soccer. I don’t think I had ever seen a game on TV, there were no soccer clubs and no schools had soccer teams. Sure I had heard of it and maybe seen a clip of it on TV, but that was about it.

One day my high school gym coach had something more important to do and threw everyone onto the football field with an old volleyball and said “play soccer.” My older neighbor came home from college one time with a soccer ball and all the kids on the street ended up in his back yard having something of a soccer game. He knew some of the rules, but nobody cared. We just ran and kicked and had a blast.

That was about it. Then came 1990. The USA had qualified for the World Cup for the first time in my life, and I was 26!

Not just soccer on TV, but the World Cup. It was amazing and I was hooked.

Because of my heritage I’ve always been fascinated by everything German and here was Germany actually winning this amazing event. I was hooked.
Germany had this player named Klinsmann that was the same age as me and he was fun to watch and I was a fan. When the internet came around I actually searched for this guy to learn more about him. I learned he was playing this great game in something called the Bundesliga in Germany and for some club in Munich called Bayern München. I was now a fan. And I’m still here.

Because of 1990 I’ve coached my kids in rec soccer, my kids have played high school soccer and I even play adult ball. Because of 1990 I have the Nationalmannschaft, the Bundesliga and of course Bayern to follow. I’ve travelled to Chicago to see Bayern play, and made a trip to Orlando to catch an Olympic match (Saudi Arabia v Spain.)
Ah the World Cup, imagine the great matches I missed in the
70s and 80s because I didn’t know you.

Man, you kids don’t know how good you have it!

Heh... had the same thought a couple days ago when I heard from an old friend on FB. In the mid/late 90s she would VCR EPL, CL and UEFA cup games for me and then overnight the video tapes. If not for that I pretty much couldn't watch Euro football.

Yup, I remember being like 12 years old and my friend (who was born in Italy) was going on about the World Cup and how big it was and I literally didn't have the first clue. Even after the conversation, really. Was a little more aware, maybe watched the final in '86 but didn't really get into until the USA was awarded the World Cup and then qualified in '90.

Did he try to swap out one of your groomsmen for a younger, German-speaking groomsmen?

Unfortunately Klinsmann wasnt at mine. I would have let him do both of these had he wanted to come to the wedding!
