I still worry about the first round more. We consistently have more problems in the first round then we do in the hex. We seem to really understand how to proceed through the hex but the first round, more times than not, is scary as hell.

Not only were we losing in the final game of the first round, before that we almost threw away points to Antigua until the most unlikely combo ever (Alan Gordon to EJ) bailed us late very late.

Crap, two years from the start of this and I am already fretting away games :)

For those new fans who are going to follow this cycle from the beginning, you are going to love the whacky world of Concacaf qualifying :)

Is the Jogo Bonito dead? Maybe it already was, but that seems to be one take-way for me this past month. Perhaps ironic that it takes a Brazil World Cup for that to be fully revealed.

I think it is there only to keep players at least 10 yards from the pk spot during a pk. Not sure it serves any other purpose.

I think he's fantastic- definitely one of the more enjoyable players in the world to watch for me. But if he's going to be THAT guy, he needs to make the leap for his country in the big games, regardless of how few there are. Please see: Messi. (who is taking the leap this WC)

Coming into this World Cup, commentators basically said that Argentina was very powerful in attack, but weak defensively. That may be so, but the attack has not produced quite the goal scoring that might have been expected. 8 goals in 5 matches is not overwhelming. On the other hand, their defense has been strong, having conceded only 3 goals.

At some point during the game, the flashed a graphic of how many shots on goal Belgium had vs the US and Argentina. Got me thinking- wtf is really the difference in the two games... Argentina completely contained the defense and midfield- astonishingly so given the dominance Belgium had against the US. That back 4 and central MF destroyed the passing lanes and shut down any danger from Belgium in front of goal. Color me impressed by a lot. If they can get Di Maria back to complement Messi- that is going to be a tough team for Netherlands or anybody else to match up against.

btw- where's Aguerro? Hurt, or just out of favor?

I feel vindicated by the article about that Brazil game. Made me feel a lot better to see what I felt articulated perfectly. I felt that Brazil was first to set the tone of cynical aggression - and was first to then set the tone of cynical flopping.

Fact someone else saw all of this, was able to point out how the flow is cumulative and leads to a progression of events makes me feel hopeful.

What doesn't make me feel hopeful are those that cannot even entertain or see that all of this so blatantly happened - and excuse it.

As the journalist so aptly pointed out, the ref's inability to police and enforce a modicum of justice contributed not only to an ugly match lacking in fair play, but quite possibly in serious injury.

I won't speak for others, but THAT is the problem I personally had with the sport - not the sport itself.

And the fact you so stubbornly glaze all of this over, well. That informs how I value your opinion.

Looking back it wasn't terrible. But he stared Messi down then walked back and sort of did the second fist pump while looking at the crowd. It wouldn't have been bad if it was in the 60th minute but in the 94th, it just seemed off to me. I guess goalies are strange enough and they can't do much more but at that point I'd probably be looking to get up field.

Just seemed like it was more personal between him and Messi.

Aguero has been back at practice. Don't know if he is match fit yet. DiMaria is out for the WC.

By the way, Sabella has been criticized by many fans for not including Carlos Tevez in his squads, either in the qualification stage or in the WC. Apparently he felt that Tevez didn't fit his scheme. However, if Argentina goes against the Netherlands without Aguero and DiMaria (and loses), the criticisms will mushroom.

I'm as a big a Tevez fab as it gets. Palacio can't hold his jock.

Also, Pastore could really help this team right now with those injuries.

He gets injured a lot, and most fans don't like him because of his diving, selfish play and generally toolish behavior.

But when he's healthy and focused, like he has been this World Cup, he's awesome.

As an Atlético fan, I hope Courtois has a personal thing with Messi, as that might mean he's more likely to move permanently. But that's simply wishful thinking on my part.

 
Way back in the thread, someone asked for a goal count by club in addition to league. Here it is through the quarterfinals. Keep in mind that consistent with the league tally, for players who were out on loan through the end of the Euro season, their goals are credited to the club who owns the player's contract, rather than to the loan club. Examples include Lukaku (Chelsea instead of Everton), Bryan Ruiz (Fulham instead of PSV) and Joel Campbell (Arsenal instead of Olympiacos). I may do an adjusted goal count for loaned players after the final.
