With so much uncertainly surrounding the Big 12 and potential expansion, realignment, superconferences, etc., is there any chance a weakened Baylor gets left on the outside when all of the dust settles?

Saban, however, doesn’t seem to care much for Harbaugh’s opinion.

Not a chance.  I mean you would have to take SMU at that point.  

And who would want to join the Big 12 at this point?  Who would even make sense to on either side?  They made a fortune on what could be the last mega TV deal.  Why divide that up to more parties? Makes way more sense to stay at 10 and divide by 10 (Texas excluded, obviously) rather than divide by 12 or 14.  A CCG won't make up the gap in adding more teams and the extra costs incurred.

Not to condone it, but its slightly different than one of these domestic violence issues that have all of a sudden become the hot takes in the sporting world.  He didn't beat up his GF and punch a girl in a bar or something.  His cousin got jumped and he jumped in.  Completely stupid and technically violence against women, but to compare it to Greg Hardy or Ray Rice like the media is doing is a bit harsh.  He was charged with Simple Assault and if you want to go by that definition then there are dozens, if not 100+ kids in college sports playing with a simple assault charge.

I wish we had suspended him 4 or 6 games...but honestly it wouldn't have mattered.  The media backlash would have been the same had we suspended him the entire season.

Yeah, I watched the video.  Hard to see clearly, but two women went at it hard core.  There were kids and all kinds of people standing around screaming.  This guy jumped in and at first, looked like he was trying to break them up.  But obviously, he lost it and started taking swings at one of the gals.  Pretty ugly situation, but I don't think he's in the same category as a Greg Hardy or Ray Rice viewing this video.

Then you have the fact that conference games bring in less overall revenue to schools. It's been a goldmine for Texas and Oklahoma not having to schedule an in-conference game as they get to pocket a #### ton more money that way.  Add another CG to the schedule and their gate goes down.  And while gate isn't TV it's still not nothing.

UTEP doesn't seem to have any scruples.  See Price, Mike.  

If I'm Kansas, I'm considering Briles at this point.  You've really got nothing to lose as your program is perhaps the worst in the country.  Gulp hard and make the hire I say.

Like very much. UTEP could become the ultimate outlaw school with Briles hanging 80 every week on the likes of Tulsa and Southern Miss and his merry band of brigands assaulting Mexican girls willy-nilly.

People thought this would ruin the FSU-Miami rivalry too. 

Miami ended up taking care of that by just being piss awful. They've never met in the ACC title game.

FYP. This isn't like the ACC where it didn't really matter as much how the geography worked out. Here, it does. There's zero reason to separate OU - OSU for the sake of the rivalry vs. a potential title game.

In that order for money.  Big 12 getting 30 million per team each year, with a little more now with a Championship game in the mix starting 2017.   Was a lot of talk yesterday on sports news with 50/50 split on adding teams, and the Championship game.  A lot of complaining "what if" you have to play a team back to back weeks?  That I don't understand who cares if you have to play a team back to back.  Let the best team win, and let competition reign.  I would love to see OU and OSU split into different divisions and maybe every now and again face each other for the Big 12 Championship.

The biggest potential problem is if two teams have clinched a CC spot and play late, the late regular season game is completely meaningless. Starters would sit, offenses would be vanilla...a disaster of a rivalry game.

Wouldn't sitting your starters and the potential loss cost that team from gaining a Final 4 spot?  Seems that playing and winning out is what teams want to do.

Maybe not. If Bama-LSU played late in '11, the loser still makes the CFP for example.  Or the Kick 6. Odds may be somewhat slim but it can happen.

The ACC is making almost 30M a year per school (more than the B12 last year) and quite frankly, the big 12 football product isn't really superior.

One of the most popular Hot Seat list coaches gets an extension...the Gus Bus rides on!

Maybe FDS can explain it better...but it appears at a glance that AU gave a coach no one was going to hire away at his previous salary a 1 year raise...which really doesn't mean much if he turns it around...but increases the payment if he gets fired to over $2.25M per year remaining?

I stopped trying to understand Jay Jacobs a long time ago.   We've got a guy in the AD office who only cares if his football coach loves Jesus, and is an "Auburn Man".   He makes money in fundraising, so the President loves him.  Success in revenue sports seem to be secondary to a lot of things for JJ.

This extension is a little confusing...other than Jacobs just making it clear he's going the way Gus goes no matter what.  Does Gus survive another year like the last two?

He can't go the whole season with him getting closer to lame duck status - not in this day and age of recruiting - and not to mention the press would be all over is he staying or going. It's the price you would have to pay.

He was closer to lame duck, but not there yet...seems like they could have waited a year to see if he was going to make it another.

So I agree that they wanted to show he was staying regardless. So if he wins 6 games?

This is the even year schedule and the way the schedule lines up - 6 wins will be a bottom line effective job. Clemson and LSU at home will be tough wins to achieve - he needs a split of those. After that you have opportunities when they visit both Ole Miss and State - an uphill climb where hopefully the turmoil in both those programs help - he needs a split here as well. Then there are the road battles against their rivals in Athens and Tuscaloosa - and those are going to be near impossible, So realistically 6 wins is good - 8 is possible. It's the odd year schedule he needs to make his mark in next year and 6 wins then is a fireable offense.

I've mentioned this before, but at what point do some of these P5 conferences realize the downside of limiting (or even eliminating) their games against G5 or FCS schools? The ACC went 37-19 in nonconference (reg. season) games last season. Adding a ninth conference game is a guaranteed seven losses for the league, so it stands to reason that some of those games probably would have been wins otherwise. What happens if it starts costing leagues bowl spots?

That's one big reason why I'm skeptical that some form of "superconference" format will ever work. Which current teams that usually are around .500 now are going to want to sign up to be the 3-9 or 2-10 teams every year under a new format, regardless of how good the money might be?

I'm not sure it's a big deal.  The reason losses were so big pre playoff was because it was cupcakes outside the conference (typically).  If the schedules get tougher, the margin for error gets larger.  I'd rather them stop the facade and make all the teams in P5 to play other schools from P5.  At that point the fun begins IMO.

I guess my point is that it would be a great system for the true "power" teams, but there has to be some tradeoff. Assuming the bowl system stays the way it is now (a big if, but I don't know what it would be under a new superconference format), I think you're probably seeing a lot of these 7-5 and 6-6 P5 teams suddenly struggling to stay afloat. There has to be some counter effect to not being able to beat up on G5s and FCS teams any more ... someone is going to have to be on the losing end of those games.

But I think the bigger issue will be giving up those seventh (or even eighth) home games under a superconference setup. Otherwise, someone is going to be playing five, and who's going to sign up for that?

 
All I know is the B1G was good with moving to 9 conference games even if it meant losing a home game because they were going to make :moneybag:  regardless.  The teams at the top of each conference usually play 7 home games and a "neutral" game these days anyway and they aren't hurting.  They are getting stronger.
