Gave: St. Louis Rams D/ST
Got: Denver Broncos D/ST + 2017 2nd
Some background-- the league has very high performance scoring for defenses, and teams will frequently go negative. Points allowed on defense is by far the #1 contributor to defensive scores. Defenses play a *huge* role in the league; the gap between the best and worst owner in defensive production is larger than the gap between the best and the worst owners at QB, RB, or TE. (Despite owners starting two RBs each). So defenses are important, and St. Louis' playoff schedule is important.
The Broncos owner also had Green Bay, and league rules prohibit starting defenses on a bye. There were only four defenses on waivers to choose from. He is second in points scored, but 2-4, and really wants to avoid another loss. He offered me Denver for St. Louis straight up and I shot him down and countered with my Atlanta Falcons defense for his Green Bay Packers. He countered back with this trade, which I accepted.
The context is added so you don't think the other owner is insane. He had reasons for doing what he did. With all of that said, however, I still think that this was a terrible trade for him. But he's a good owner who knows what he was doing, and it's not my job to manage his team, so I wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
