Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

TRUMP ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE! :pickle: he better use that tacky gold for his signs

Campaign slogans?

  • "America: Let's class this place up."
  • "Brainstorming for America: for instance, I said to myself, 'here's an idea, what if instead of the White House, we call it "TrumpHouse?!' Put a big T on it, then other countries know you mean business."

Rick Perry barely gets in there, that could change. On the outside, their faces pressed to the glass, are Jindal, Fiorina, Graham, Kasich, Santorum, Pataki, and who am I forgetting?

People say I don't like China. I love China. I got Em in the Trump Tower!

Next year Obamacare is going to kick in. Obama will be out playing golf. He can play on one of my courses if he wants. I own the best golf courses in the world.
If he can make money off of it, he is all for it. Capitalism!

Dana Milbank at The Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/jeb-will-always-be-a-bush-whether-he-runs-from-it-or-not/2015/06/15/89a84278-13aa-11e5-89f3-61410da94eb1_story.html

If Jeb Bush is going to run for president as something other than a Bush, it will take a transformation worthy of Rachel Dolezal.

And yet the former Florida governor, who once accidentally checked Hispanic on a voter registration form, is doing everything but change his appearance to de-emphasize his inheritance. His presidential campaign logo, introduced over the weekend, is a simple exclamation: Jeb! His brother, the 43rd president, and his father, the 41st president, were not in attendance for his presidential announcement speech in Miami on Monday. He didnt even mention them until nearly the end.[...] His name is the reason he is a leading contender on the presidential stage, the reason he has an enormous campaign war chest, and the reason he became Floridas governor in the first place. Yet he is pointlessly running from it.
I agree with this piece, but ...

Clinton, in her own kickoff rally over the weekend, had “hillaryclinton.com” on the lectern, mentioned her husband near the top of her speech, and received the former president onstage for a hug. Bush’s lectern had his Bush-free Web address, Jeb2016.com, and the signs and thunder sticks shouted “Jeb!” (a logo Bush also used in his gubernatorial campaigns) in a scene reminiscent of Lamar! Alexander’s red-plaid bid for the 1996 Republican nomination.
...let's face it, Hillary's logo is a big "H", and her signs and other paraphernalia just say "Hillary". That basically leaves the website name as the only difference. Hillary also did not have her grubby brothers in the audience, no one wants to be reminded of them. That would have been some "scandal" if Bill wasn't there.

I'm gonna say Fiorina or Kasich have a shot at breaking in and some 1-2-combo of Perry, Carson, Huck or Christie will not.

Graham isn't in the top 10? And if he's not, you don't think he will be by the first debate?

I hope your list is right. Trump, Perry, Carson, Christie, Cruz -- would be a freakshow. But so hard to predict right now, lots of candidates polling at like 2%.

Graham is less than 1% right now. He gets a lot of media attention but nothing in the polls.

Christie is definitely on the border with Perry. But Huck and Carson have consistently stayed at 5% or higher so I have a feeling they're locked in. Fiorina would make a lot of sense for the GOP but so far she's done nothing in the polls. And there's your poor governor, Saints. All that effort to get into this thing- I'm starting to feel sorry for him.

I'd like Jindal in there, because I'm not sure there is any other Ivy League educated (and accepted to both Harvard med school and Yale Law), Rhodes Scholar who is a young earth creationist. Totally fascinating.

My governor? That hurts. - Bobby update: thankfully he will be announcing in Kenner, which is a hyper-corrupt little burb outside NO, so I'm happy about that. But if he tries to pretend like he's in NO for the sake of national optics, I'm hitting the pub.

I think being the last one in Bobby is now officially Mr. Irrelevant 2016.

He would have to say something really outrageous in order to get some ink. Right now, he's boring.

I did forget about that. Man - there are too many good GOP candidates. Maybe they should just have two debates like back to back.

Jindal has tried to be controversial. He made the speech in England about Islamic zones. He rushed to the defense of the Indiana governor about gays and signed the same law in his state- he promotes intelligent design classes-

But all of this stuff gets little air time nationally. Nobody seems to care because Bobby himself is so dull. He could say "elect me and I will start a nuclear war with Russia!" And it would get a 10

Second treatment at the end of the evening news and never get mentioned again. He just doesn't attract attention.

How about 2 stages at the same time and if you aren't getting enough airtime, you can bump someone off the other stage. I always love it when some nobody just stands there and only gets about 10 seconds of airtime.

If he is, the GOP is in way worse shape than I thought and I didn't think that was possible.

The Dems have to be loving this now. Takes focus off their turds AND makes the turds look like nuggets of gold by comparison....win/win for them. I really want Bernie to make some noise somehow.

Carson is not getting knocked out - I think a different brand of crank likes him as opposed to the Trump cramps.

This is true. Hell of a day and time for Trump to take up the media space. I will say despite all the farce he does challenge the scripted nature of the campaign and will start some policy conversations. Bernie does that on a much more serious level on the left. I think the country always profits from debate.

One thing that Trump can do for the GOP is attract people who don't care about politics and he can also dump a ton of money into the race, which is good for them as long as it's not thrown against other goppers. Otherwise he can cause a lot of chaos and potentially turn the race and debates into a running joke.

If his kickoff speech is any indication, he's going to be critical of all the Republicans. He took swipes at Bush and Rubio specifically, and "politicians" in general. He's not a team player.

The fun part about Trump is his ceiling for support is probably like 8%. But his floor is like 5%.

So there's basically no way they can leave him out of the debates yet unless about 20 candidates run* he has no chance to finish first.

*-I understand this is totally possible.

Yeah, I think Trump is pretty much a lock to be in the first two debates. The criteria is national polling, which heavily favors candidates with name recognition and candidates that can spend money. You can't get in the debates just by doing a bunch of town hall events in little towns in Iowa, which has been the more traditional way for candidates to gain some traction.

Sarah must be jealous. I think she needs to get in this.
The GOP is awfully close filling out two 10 team FF leagues right now. They just need 3 more. This is the point where they ask the guy 3 cubicles down at work, or their cousin at the kids' birthday party, or their nephew. So guppies only need apply, the guy who asks if he can still pick Brett Favre, sure as long as you brought your league dues.

I used the poker "pot odds" analogy before regarding GOPers entering with more and more marginal hands entering the Presidential Pot.

Trump just called with a Joker and one of those cards that advertises Hoyle's book on the rules of poker.

Not surprisingly, he's allegedly good friends with Christie (blowhards stick together, I guess). So I wonder if Trump will go after him at all. That'd be fun.

Trump speech summary?
You can't get the full impact in a summary, but basically:

"All politicians are dum-dums that don't know anything, I'm really really rich so you can tell I know how to negotiate, my net worth is $8.something billion, here's an example of how awesome I am [makes up completely hypothetical story about him violating NAFTA to force Ford to make its cars in the US instead of Mexico], here is my lovely family" :drops mic: :Rockin'InTheFreeWorld:

If you are Jeb do you just skip the debate?

seriously, just let trump and cruz Nd Christie go at it and come out looking like buffoons

Trump will help Jeb look like the adult in the room. I've actually seen a debate field this large though and as you might imagine there's hardly time for any kind of substantive answers to take place.

The problem is that Rubio and Walker will show up and they won't look like buffoons.
You sure about that? Are either of those guys particularly smart?

Walker doesn't have a college degree. And when he dropped out, he apparently had a 2.6 GPA.

In 2012 Trump led for 2 or 3 weeks at around 25%

just because I was curious

Did not graduate from college[edit]

(I know I shouldn't do this ... Ok I'll do it) what was Pres. Obama's GPA at Occidental and Columbia, anyone know? IIRC Gore, Kerry and Bush had mediocre Gpa's? Do we know Hillary's undergrad GPA? Yes I think we should know this about all candidates and yes I think Walker's academic record is relevant.

Truman used to.be derisively called the "haberdasher" because he had worked in a suit store in KC in his early days, he wore it as a sign of pride.
