Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

The cartoonist was IMO over the line, but it's weird for politicians to whore out their family yet throw a fit if the family members get attacked. They should just leave them out of the spotlight to begin with. But I know that's not how the game is played.

It's too bad that the cartoon will overshadow a very legitimate issue of candidates who exploit their families for political gain. Ted Cruz is using his kids as props like no other candidate has ever done before.
I don't know. On MSNBC this morning , they slammed this cartoon and showed Obama's extensive use of his children in 2008 campaign events as a comparison.
I thought the SNL commercial parody went a bit farther than other candidates had gone in the past. Did Obama ever do anything like that?

I don't know, but even if he did, portraying his children as monkeys would be disgusting.

The OP Ed by the cartoonist is kind of hypocritical. I saw that piece by Cruz, yeah it goes an extra step too far, it's gross to me. But really not denigrating politicians' children because they're children is the rule, they can't help it. Stick to that. Let's face it the cartoonist hates Cruz and so does WaPo and that's the only difference here.

Ha thanks.

I'm going to try to think of the gradations of "vote for me I'm a Grandmother you know!" to campaign flyer featuring the children, to tv commercial of whole family warmly embracing while the candidate talks about 'Merica!, to having the kiddeos on stage after debates and during conventions, to finally putting them in a little play skit video about slouching towards Gomorrah. To me it's one long continuum, it's always hard to take.

Lost in the discussion about the cartoon is the fact that that's a great drawing of Ted!

and Santa has monkeys?

What I am actually thinking about are some recent ads by David Vitter in the last two cycles. His wife the kids. In one they emerge over a hill (I actually recognize the playground, we might have two actual fake "hills" in this town). The sun is shining, it's morning in America, y'all, and look he's totally not a skirt chasing John either! No he's a family man.

So this is merely an example from the last presidential race.

A new Internet ad by the president’s reelection campaign features a portrait of the first family asking supporters to “help the Obamas stand up for working Americans.” The appeal, a departure from the typical Obama messaging, provides an early glimpse of the role the president’s wife and daughters are likely to play in his campaign.

In the months to come, political strategists expect to see the first family used as a political asset.

...Seventy-three percent of Americans hold favorable views of Michelle Obama, according to a recent Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll. There is no polling on his daughters, but by some indications interest in Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, is also high. A portrait of the family published by the campaign last year went viral, according to a study by Socialbakers, which analyzes social media trends.

Fennis posting that Hillary cartoon led me to go back and look at her other work. Here's an update:

Ted Cruz uses his kids as political props (updated with statement) Editor’s note from Fred Hiatt: It’s generally been the policy of our editorial section to leave children out of it. I failed to look at this cartoon before it was published. I understand why Ann thought an exception to the policy was warranted in this case, but I do not agree.

Cartoon's down. - nm

the cartoon is fine - it's not an indictment of his daughters. It's an indictment of Ted trotting out there to win votes - which I have no problem with - but it's what he did.

Exactly wrong. Leave the kids alone. It isn't like there isn't a lot of red meat for the left leaning press here to bite into on Cruz. Very hypocritical for the press to publish this after numerous examples of press outrage when this has happened the other way.

This. You can criticize Cruz for doing this without depicting his kids at all. Or you could focus on 10,000 other more important things on which to criticize him.

I first saw Mandy Patankin on stage in 1978 at the Schubert Theater in Los Angeles- he played Che in Evita. To this day, that still may be the best musical I've ever seen. Mandy was incredible, too.
1st rate actor, hard to find a better return on the dollar spent hiring him, that's not the issue here.
Patinkin is universally regarded as one of the biggest dbags and worst actor to work with in Hollywood. And that's saying something.
Plus he has he has the worst solution for the contested islands in the South China Sea in all of Hollywood.

I have made several posts in this thread about the state of the GOP race that you are free to critique. As for Trump, he is a boorish rabble-rouser who appeals to lower class whites who feel they've been given short shrift by advances in multiculturalism/liberalism and feel threatened by the economic shift away from blue-collar jobs which has been encouraged by Obama with the tacit approval of the political elite of the GOP. Basically being white in this country ain't all it's cracked up to be anymore and they want to make America great again by returning to the cultural mores of the 1950's.

He is a nightmare for Republicans because, while the white trash demographic is large enough to give Trump the lead, it is hardly enough to carry a national election and will have repercussions down the ticket leading to the democratic party re-taking the Senate and who knows how many governorships and House seats. Or so the thinking goes.
:goodposting:

I have to wonder why any non-white male would even consider voting for Trump. That is probably the only group of people he hasn't insulted.

He may be the frontrunner in the GOP primaries right now but I honestly can't see him ever winning a general election given the ever changing demographics. I believe that was one of the biggest reasons (if not the biggest reason) Romney lost and Trump has little if any chance of getting more of the Latino vote than Romney got and without that I don't see how he could win. That doesn't even factor in the African-American vote or women voters. The numbers simply do not add up.

Are there polls that break down Trump supporters by demographics like the above?

Pataki had supporters?
Pataki was at 0% in NH. To register at 1% in a poll you need to have 0.5%. In a typical NH GOP poll that means at least 2 or 3 people have to support you, although sometimes even less. Pataki was almost always at zero in every NH poll.

Makes it easier to call each supporter personally to let them know that you're dropping out.

Latest CNN poll has Trump at 24% of the "non white" (CNN's term) vote.

What total pandering BS is this? Carly Fiorina, a graduate of Stanford, tweeted earlier today:

Love my alma mater, but rooting for an Iowa victory.

Now I'm glad Iowa is being pummeled. That is just awful!

I saw this, that is pathetic.

Reminds of Kerry going to Michigan, forgetting where he was and yelling, "Wherever I go I always support the Buckeyes!" Followed by a hail of boooos. Classic.

You can't pander much more than that. I can't believe her (or somebody higher ranking in whatever organization she has) doesn't see how ridiculous that sounds.

Then again, maybe that's the point. Any attention is better than no attention?

Hillary supporters complaining about pandering? Really?
Theres pandering and there's pandering. This is a new low.
On one hand, Carly is pandering about something rather meaningless, but looks like it an idiot for doing so. On the other hand, Hillary is often accused of pandering on actual issues that impact people.

Just like her chances in Iowa.
She'll be one of the candidates out of the race after Iowa/NH.

7th place isn't going to cut it.
Seemed like the Hawkeyes finished 7th today.

No answer for McCaffrey, and their offense got exposed today.

Is this a GOP primary poll? 24% could be really good if the remaining 76% is spread out amongst a dozen candidates.

This is the GOP's biggest problem. The party's voters are ga ga about a guy who has no chance in the general election. They are too short-sided to do what's best for their party. They're just so high on the hatred and bigotry right now that they're not seeing the big picture.

Not exclusively. But the party is ruled by mostly older white guys. And they've been fed by Fox News for 8 years that Obama is lax on immigration and is a Muslim/Muslim supporter. Trump is the anti-Obama. Hates Mexicans.. Hates Muslims. A portion of the party is eating it up. Maybe not even the majority of the party. But more than any of the other candidates. Unfortunately for the GOP, outside of the party, Trump supporters are going to be much harder to find. He's at 9% approval with latinos and 9% approval with African americans. I haven't heard about his numbers with Muslims, but I'd have to guess it's around 0%, since he'd like to ship them all out. They all to vote in the general election. That's why the GOP would love for Trump to drop out. Or his supporters to wise up.

That's actually more like it. You guys use "racist", "bigot", "homophobe" and the like so much to describe those that don't agree with you that they've pretty much lost all effectiveness.

:goodposting: I have to wonder why any non-white male would even consider voting for Trump.

Latest CNN poll has Trump at 24% of the "non white" (CNN's term) vote.
If that is true I really can't see any way Trump could ever win a general election regardless of whether it's against Hillary or Sanders.
This is the GOP's biggest problem. The party's voters are ga ga about a guy who has no chance in the general election. They are too short-sided to do what's best for their party. They're just so high on the hatred and bigotry right now that they're not seeing the big picture.

And that's the problem...it doesn't.
