Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

Tim Trump knows almost nothing about the things he talks about. Typically totally nothing.
It's really scary isn't it? I thought Palin was scary in her lack of knowledge, but she was only running for VP. Still, just the idea that a person like that might be President caused me to stop supporting a man whom I really really liked.

This though is far worse. This man is running for President, and he is winning.

He'll surround himself with experts.

Now imagine the press did zero reporting on her qualifications or lack of knowledge but instead gave her a prime time infomercial spot in CNN and her own town hall on msnbc unencumbered with questions about what she reads or what she really knows about Russia.

The press is most at fault here.

Don't disagree that they're at fault. But are they MOST at fault?

Based on everything I've heard from Trump's supporters, they really don't care about his lack of qualifications or lack of knowledge. They certainly don't care about his racism or boorishness. So why don't we put the blame where it really belongs? The people most at fault are the 30-35% of Republicans and Independents who support this man for President.

Tim refer back to the NYT article about Trump's most ardent followers. Do you recall that?

Anyway you may be right. Actually above the press I put the Republican Party and Preibus for not casting Trump into the cold last summer.

Cruz just said he's never been un-civil or attacked fellow Senators in congress. That's funny. I mean, its ####### laughable for him to say that.

That was a good one.  He made a point of Trump and Rubio calling him a "liar".  I think they learned that political speak from Cruz's commments on Mitch McConnell.

Tim, you do know that politics in the US is a ####show, right?  That the average and below average voter is uninformed, selfish, fear-motivated and generally not that smart?  Your incredulity at each and every turn is so ####### annoying. Trump resonates because, well, 'merica. That's who the every Joe and Jane of the GOP is.

Please stop pretending to be OMGZ!!!!!!1!111JUAN We all know you expect more. But you shouldn't.

I don't think this is true at all. In 2008, which was a pretty recent election, Barack Obama gave some of the most nuanced, thoughtful speeches I ever heard, filled not only with optimism but also with depth. And he was elected President twice. You don't have to dumb everything down. I don't think Bernie, Hillary, or Kasich do.

We've had great statesmen as Presidents. There's no reason why we can't again. So I'm sorry that what I have to say is annoying to you. But dammit yes I expect more, and yes I should expect more. We all should. We're better than this.

But this is the early stages of a Republican primary Tim. There's a certain type of...person...who is being pandered to here. Unfortunate but true.

Barack Obama, while I disagree with many of his policies, was a once in a generation politician.  So many Republicans blame Mitt Romney for 2012 but I don't think Obama was beatable given his skill and the electoral map, and the demographics that are in play within that map.  No candidate on either side is a Barack Obama.  I do think if Mitt Romney were running this year he would have a great chance in the general election.

But honestly, there's no telling what is coming out of either side of these primaries.  Sure, there is a lot of pandering on the Republican side to certain issues, but the Democratic primary is going to the hard left just as the Republican one is to the far right.  Not to mention the pandering of Bernie on the free stuff.  You know free college isn't happening, I know it isn't happening, most every Democrat who is in office that has answered the question admits it isn't happening, but yet it's part of the campaign.  I don't care for Ted Cruz, but that's no different than Cruz saying he's going to repeal Obamacare.  It's just not going to happen and he knows that.  But it gets him votes in the primary just as Bernie's statements are doing for him.

I agree. But go to Youtube back to 1980 and watch an early primary debate between Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and John Anderson. That wasn't that long ago, in terms of elections. The feel is completely different. The conversation is nuanced and thoughtful. The courtesy between the candidates is remarkable compared to now.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Is that a nervous laugh that he might not actually give a crap about Israel? Or a laugh that liberals are butt hurt about the muslims, or laughing that bible thumpers dont give a crap about them?

Laughing at your stupidity....just a guess.

Seemed to be a pretty big cause for Bill at the end of his term, Palestinians were Obamas cause for awhile. Republicans did not care and let them bulldoze when they held office. Making a state for the Palestinians has been a cause for Democrats for awhile now.

Things to laugh at in your comment:

  1.  That all liberals feel the same about Israel
  2.  That all conservatives feel the same about Israel
  3.  That liberals are juxtaposed by bible thumpers rather than conservatives and cannot be bible thumpers themselves
My bad, I figured the people that leaned liberal would be against a right wing apartheid government. Does the dynamic of Jews and Arabs change this? Two marginalized people sharing the same land confuse liberals on what to think?

Again thank the press in addition to the parties and candidates. It feels like we have all lost our minds a little bit.

Why is he a jerk? Every liberal is taught to hate Israel, every bible thumper loves it. Go neutral and draw both in.
He's a jerk because he is casual with important things. Like the smarmy 8 year old nephew who likes to flip his grandmother's sentimentally expensive vase up in the air.

Israel is our ally and being "neutral" means abandoning them. At a minimum it likely just encourages the bad actors in the Mideast even further.

The area needs more stability right now, not more question marks, etc.

How so? Cruz is a noted defender of civil liberties, including free speech and privacy rights, which is why a lot of libertarian leaning folks support him (e.g., me). In fact, he has fought against the bulk collection of metadata and the surveillance state, even though it remains an unpopular position to take within the GOP. For example, he's being attacked for it on the campaign trail by the national security hawks. So if you are concerned about the government snooping around and persecuting you for your beliefs, then you should be much more frightened by candidacies of the neocons, Rubio/ Jeb, not to mention the nationalist, Trump.
Plus he's a dominionist so he's got that going for him.

I want my religious freedom!!!!

I can't be free if people get abortions and gays marry!!!
No s**t....I don't understand why all republicans aren't for abortion and planned parenthood.....Republicans don't like taxes or welfare...How much money do you think is given to support unwanted babies throughout their life time?..

You are confusing babies and fetuses. Fetuses are the most important creatures on God's planet and must be protected at all costs.  Babies?  Eh, who cares.

This only matters if one cares what Nikki says IMO.  I can assure you, those that support Trump don't.  She is bringing gas to the bonfire.
When are people going to realize that Trump is leading in the polls based on his complete lack of support from the establishment?  She would have been better off not offering any opinion.

IMO, the only way Trump gets stopped is if the race lasts long enough that people start to tire of his rhetoric.  However, there are a lot of *^%$#* off middle class people ready to hang in it with him.

I would just note that the left's attacks on Cruz's faith (e.g., Cruz wants to install a Christian theocracy and persecute nonbelievers) are akin the ones that the far right made against Obama's faith in 2008 (Obama subscribes to black liberation theology and hence he hates America/ white people, Obama is a Muslim and wants to bring a caliphate to America, etc.). It's fear mongering and spawned by ignorance/ intolerance.
I didn't realize Rev Wright was Barack's father.
