***Official 2017-18 Hot Stove League Thread: Peter Bourjos & Ryan Flaherty are signs the end is near (2 Viewers)

Bunch of reporters saying Jeter screwed Florida and was conspiring with Yankees. That's not fair as he didn't give Stanton this contact and he also had deals with both st Louis and San Francisco worked out but Stanton rejected them both.
If he is going to sell off all of the marketable pieces of the team, Marlins fans will stay away in droves.

Oh, wait.

Very disappointing day. My kids have watched Stanton since AA.

I could understand him wanting to go back to LA since that's where he's from (and hits extremely well).

As for Jeter, I don't think it's collusion. More of, if you can't afford a team, why did you buy it?

MIght have to re-think my ExtraInnings purchase next year. Looking like a 5 or 6 team league, none of which I like.

Yankees have bigger needs than power hitting right fielders. Back to their ways of huge contracts. Guess they didn't learn their lesson.
Some truth to this, but their books are pretty clean.  They only have three other contracts after 2018.  Though they are pretty big.  But MLB revenues are looking good and obviously they are at the top.

And people thought I was silly for suggesting that JDM to the Yankees made all too much sense becuase they had a full OF already.

Think the Stanton move forces Boston to move on JDM

I think they're just going to sign Hosmer and call it a day. JDM requires Hanley to play 1B or ride the pine.

Do owners typically go to them?
He's not just an owner.

Onley taking issue with it and I'd like to think that he knows what he's talking about

Buster Olney ✔ @Buster_ESPN

The Marlins are executing major franchise-changing deals, including the swap of their best player, and the head of baseball operations -- Derek Jeter -- should be at the winter meetings to explain the moves; it's a responsibility that comes with the title. He is not here.

They're reportedly looking into acquiring Abreu. That would be a pretty good fit as well, and arguably a better fit over Hosmer.

Chase Headley is heading back to San Diego in a salary dump.  The Prellers also get an arm in Bryan Mitchell who should get a shot at a back-end SP or bullpen role.  Jabari Blash is part of the package for the Yankees but he's out of options.

I'm glad to have Headley back in the NL West because of the way Jon Miller pronounces his name.

Chase Headley is now the highest paid Padre, making almost 3x as much as the next closest position player (Will Myers $4.5m) and double Travis Wood (6.5M)

Boston is not in a good place. Already well over the luxury tax threshold and the Yankees have maneuvered themselves down to just over $150m. The Yankees still have almost $50m to spend, if they choose to and some viable prospects that could be moved reasonably priced, controllable talent

They're in a better place than Toronto/Baltimore/Tampa :(

I'm wondering if Miguel andujar will play 3b or perhaps they resign Frazier who they loved.
Yeah, I think a ToddFather reunion is most likely - I think they can get him a lot cheaper than Headley's 13mil. And he can platoon with Bird or play 3 days a week if Andujar and Gleyber both turn out to be good.

Could be clearing 3B for a ridiculous Machado/Donaldson trade, but I doubt it. Still, you never know. They still have basically all their prospects and a lot of cap space. And now they really have no place to put Clint Frazier.

Supposedly the Marlins are slashing payroll form 110 Mil to 55 Mil.

That's less than the NHL salary cap.

That would be lower than any team last year.

Heck, looking at historical numbers, the 1998 San Diego Padres had a payroll of 53 MIL.

So why was this ownership group approved again?

Burnishing Loria's legacy

Excepting Jose Fernandez, the Marlins' all-time top 25 players, by WAR: - One left as free agent - One waived - Three two still on the club - Twenty twenty one traded
