***Official 2017-18 Hot Stove League Thread: Peter Bourjos & Ryan Flaherty are signs the end is near (1 Viewer)

Because Santana is 2-3 years younger and actually plays a defensive position
Edwin was fine at 1B in 2015/2016 (the years before he signed the contract). His defensive numbers are roughly on par with Santana's both years but him being a couple years younger likely explains it. I don't think of Encarnacion as a guy who will be 35 this season, because of his late start.

I speak from experience that time doesn't care when you started

I think Frazier gets a similar deal.
This will be an interesting comparison over the next few years.  They're effectively the same age, neither requires compensation and are (now) playing the same position.

Frazier has been long time 3B with a traditional CIF "old man" offensive set of skills.  I haven't seen him play a lot since he was traded to the AL but I remember he passed my eyeball test defensively when he was in Cincinnati and OZR likes him a lot.

Cozart had a great contract year but prior to that, really didn't strike me as being able to carry the offensive load of a 3B.  I can't think of any decent SS who weren't able to make the transition defensively.  He seems like a higher risk signing to me but maybe I'm thinking too much inside the box.

I'm not sure about the Yankees fascination with Cole. I know he was great a few years ago but this past year he had over a 4 ERA in the national league pitching for the pirates and their pitching coach is a guru. Imagine when he comes to the AL East. I'd much prefer CC for no prospects or if you insist on giving up prospects I like Fullmer much better.

Just announced: #Dodgers get Matt Kemp from #Braves for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Culberson and cash.

:oldunsure:

Was there a winner in that trade?
Both teams win. Dodgers get under the luxury tax this year. Braves get a veteran arm. Neither team really saves any money overall but they both get to move the cash around between this season or next to fit their budgetary constraints.

The big thing for the Braves is it pushes all of their bad salaries into 2018. The Dodgers will still pay Kemp $22M in 2019.

After this season, the only 3 players the Braves have on long term deals will be Freeman, Inciarte, and Teheran.  It also opens a spot for Acuna (likely after super 2).

Yeah, I think the Matt Kemp deal was pretty solid for both sides.  One thing that made me laugh was that Kemp was still on the Dodgers payroll before they brought him back.  Dodgers love throwing money around.

Realmuto has requested a trade from Marlins. He has 3 arb years left before FA. Hope the Phls are at least inquiring.

Nick Williams + Alfaro for Realmuto would be a pretty good deal for both sides, IMO.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports says the Rays will receive third base prospect Christian Arroyo, veteran outfielder Denard Span, and minor league pitchers Matt Krook and Stephen Woods.
MLB Pipeline has Arroyo as their #1 prospect and #57 in baseball.  Krook at 25 and Woods at 29 in Giants top 30.  Sounds like both have good stuff, but control issues.  Span is salary fodder to offset Longoria's big deal.  Solid haul.  Probably better than the Marlins got for either Stanton or Ozuna.

Might be better than those deals, but it still isn't enough.

3B has been a hole for the Giants since Sandoval went to Boston.  Arroyo had been penciled in there but even in a best case scenario, he carries a MI bat.

Longoria makes the Giants better next year.  Even in a down offensive year, he was a 3.6 win player.  The obvious problem is he'll have worse offensive years between 32 and 36 but that's off in the future.  Hopefully, he won't fall off the cliff defensively and will be able to man the hot corner for the duration of his contract.

I never expected Giants management to blow it up because it's not their style.  I'm happier with Longoria than I would have been with Moustakas and the loss of compensation picks but a shorter duration 3B stopgap like Frazier or Cozart would have provided more roster flexibility if/when it all falls apart.

The Braves acquired OF Preston Tucker from Houston for a PTBNL and cash.  Tucker is no star but I like this low risk pickup.  I was hoping the Giants would have taken a flyer on him.

He has a bit of pop and could be an age 27, increased playing time breakout.  He may just be keeping the seat warm until Ronald Acuna's call up but Markakis is in the final year of his contract.

The Rays can at least try to pass this off as a rebuild instead of the complete salary dump / fire sale that the Marlins went thru.

My questions is if the Rays have a home grown product that can play 3B. Judging by Arroyo's numbers, he's a singles/doubles hitter penciled in for the middle infield.

I think 3B is the one infield position that Brad Miller hasn't sucked at yet.

Interesting angle from beat writer Marc Topkin

The Rays have been reluctant to deal Longoria because of his talent, leadership and the commitment he has shown to them, twice signing long-term, below-market deals.

But they changed their thinking this off-season with the opportunity to shed his $13.5 million salary for 2018, and the overall $86 million he is guaranteed, with a 2023 option pushing the total to $94 million, as part of an effort to trim payroll.

An additional factor is that in April, by having 10 years in the majors and at least five with the same team, Longoria will gain no-trade rights, which the Rays refuse to agree to include in contracts because it limits their flexibility.

I think Willy Adames is best suited for 3B.

Isn't enough for what? A middle of the road 3B who's on the wrong side of 30 and owed over $80M? They got plenty for him.
From Rays fan perspective, you are getting rid of the face of your franchise and the best player in team history.

Do you consider a top ten 3rd basemen middle of the road?

Matt Duffy?
