***Official 2017 NCAA Hoops Tourney thread: Congrats UNC, all the refs from NCCG should be banned for life*** (1 Viewer)

Can't believe when you are down by 1 or 2 you don't try and drive for the hoop vs throwing up a prayer 3. Drive to the bucket make it or draw foul are the better possibilities
Also means the paint is packed with the trees and people have been getting their #### tossed all tournament.

I don't think Arizona had one good offensive possession the last two or three minutes. Just gross.

So now either X or the Zags are in the Final Four? Interesting.

It wasn't a bad look and there was enough time to get a rebound and another shot.  It was a better final possession than WVU's

Congrats on the blowout victory by your Jayhawks. Your boys are gonna be hard to beat.
Thanks.  When Mason and Graham are both hot, there isn't much defenses can do.  Throw extra bodies at them, you're just opening up space for Svi and Vick in the corners or Jackson cutting to the basket.

AND DEVONTE GRAHAM

AND JOSH JACKSON

AND THAT UKRAINIAN GUY WHO HAS A NAME WE CANNOT PRONOUNCE

AND THE OTHER 4 JAYHAWKS WHO WERE ROLE PLAYERS AND WILL PROBABLY BE IN JAIL TOMORROW

AND BILL SELF WHO SCHOOLED MATT PAINTER TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
IMO Vick played really well tonight.  Made some big plays that got the team and crowd going.

When Bragg checked in, we were joking he went with the knee-high socks to hide the anklet the police put on him to monitor his whereabouts.

Was definitely rooting for Michigan tonight.  Oregon really makes defenses work hard, and they aren't afraid to call a slide-and-glide 3/4 press that will force some turnovers on Saturday.

Still think Mason and Graham will be able to break Oregon down in half court, and Oregon will either have to choose going for offensive rebounds or setting up transition defense - they don't have the horses to do both.

I like UCLA to cut it all down at the moment.
I'm impressed so far!  Can you go keep the perfect record today?

Horrible loss for zona.  They were up 8 with a few minutes to play and gave it back quick. never had a good offensive possession after.  Where was that good defense?  The fix is in!

Brutal trying to stream the Zag game here in Germany.  Looking forward to getting home and rewatching it.  Seen WVU play quite a few times this year and was worried we'd fold against a physical thug defense.  Zag boards screaming about hand checks and imbalance of calls, but great to see us tough this one out where previous teams would have folded.  How many years did MSU beat us up?

Loking forward to the Xavier game!  Go Zags.

Pundits called it an ugly game and it was by modern definitions; but I loved it.  Lots of zone, lots of man pressure, plenty of press.  For me it was the most entertaining game of the evening.  The refs were calling it a little too tight and that did take away from it some (and naturally when on to swallow their whistles at various key points), but it was still a good game to watch.

Regarding the broadcast:  Chris Webber will be an excellent color analyst within a few years.  He needs more volume (ie needs to call more games), but he is on his way.  He slips on word pronunciation often; though he calls himself out on it which is refreshing.  He lends an authentic sort of naivety to the broadcast that works well.  Webber's standout moment was the way he quickly pounced on the refs about the delay from the review on the out of bound play.  Brian Anderson isn't the best PbP as his voice lacks power, so I was surprised that this team got the assignment over Ian Eagle's team or Spero Dede's team; but they did well last night in this game.

Still annoyed that a Sweet 16 game needs to start at 10:45 EST for some reason.
I cant find the official time/duration of the game, but the refs were very chirpy for Zags/WVU and then they added another 5 min on the replay decision. That game took a while

Should they have just stopped WV-Gonzaga midway through the second half?
Well that or, ya know, started the game earlier.

We had 16 games last Thursday, and 4 last night.

So they have 1/4 the games to schedule, but can't fit them in any earlier?

It is what it is, just annoying for us spoiled east-coasters.

Kansas looks very tough right now.  It will be a very tall order for Oregon to pull off the upset.  The best news for Oregon is that they still have not played a complete game this tournament,  if somehow they come together and Brooks plays like the POY in the PAC 12 they have a chance.  Need Kansas to cool off a bit from 3 as they have been lights out.

After injury to Boucher I felt Oregon getting to Elite 8 was a very good possibility but getting past Kansas in a basic home game was going to be tough.  If they can somehow pull it off I have tickets to the Final Four here in Phoenix.  Either way I plan on going.

Excited for tonight's games, especially Kentucky versus UCLA.

I'm gonna be holding a grudge for a few minutes Cappy.  I enjoyed the ride for sure, but I really hate it when it ends because they didn't play well.  No idea how they stayed in that game until the end with such poor play.

Sucks to have it run so late for the Eastern time zone, but that game started around 4:30 local time.  With only 2 games per venue, I think they are reluctant to start them any earlier (unlike last weekend; with 4 games, they pretty much have to start around noon-1PM local time)

Also, TV :moneybag:

Yes, a few ways (among others) to get them all in earlier is to cut way into the work day on Thursday or Friday as they do for the first two rounds, OR

play all sweet 16 and elite games with no day of rest Saturday and Sunday-- and lose some weekday evening TV windows in the process.

OR

play Sweet 16 on a quick turn given the change in venue to Tuesday night through Friday night.  2 games per night starting at 7pm edt and create some TV windows on otherwise very slow sport nights

Wanted Michigan but think Oregon is a better team. That being said the game was there for Michigan to take.  11-31 from 3 point land hurt. Seemed like Michigan had to work so hard for their points and they would give Oregon easy basket after easy basket.

The missed foul shot put back was a killer and was not crazy about the last play to win the game.  Michigans offense is all movement and there was no movement at all the last possession.

Am I the only one who doesn't feel bad for Sean Miller? #### that guy with a sawzall dildo
Gigantic dildo of a man.  Did you guys see the ice cold handshake he gave St. Mary's Randy Bennett?  Bennett is one of the nicest guys in the world - met him several times and the fact that remembered my stupid asssss by name meant something.  He shook hands with Miller like Miller was diseased.  That's telling.

I just found out the game is alcohol free :sadbanana:  I guess we are gonna have to pre party hard.
Yeah, I found that out the hard way.  It sucks.  Not only that, but they don't allow re-entry between the games (at least they didn't allow me re-entry, they might a member of our esteemed armed services).  Really needs to change.

only one game tomorrow but I was hoping to have my beer goggles on the whole time for the Gonzaga and Xavier fans :bag:

Taking these in chronological order... I'm also excited for tonight's games, and I expect to spend more time actively watching UK/UCLA than the others.

Oregon/KU tomorrow should be entertaining - lots of open-court play, lots of fast players making plays before defenses get set.  Brooks being relatively quiet last night makes me concerned he's due for a breakout, and Josh Jackson can help his draft stock a little keeping Brooks in check tomorrow.   Tough break for Oregon having to play a semi-road game at this stage, but KU earned the 1-seed in their nearest region.

Highly recommend going to the Final Four, especially if you haven't been to one.  The energy around the Saturday doubleheader really is something special.

We've seen a lot of motion offenses stop moving in the last couple minutes.  Sometimes it's a player panicking and going Hero Mode, sometimes it's the coach switching to isos to have more control over who takes those last shots.

Seth Davis wrote earlier today that the endless replay in the Zags-WVU game was improperly handled.

Said that they are not allowed to review for whether a ball is out of bounds or not, but once they discovered the ball didn't actually go out, the only thing they can review at that point was who touched it last. Giving it to WVU on an inadvertant whistle (alternate possession) was a makeup call that shouldn't have happened.

That's exactly why I thought they were taking so long. The ball was clearly never out of bounds but that's what they were reviewing. So they were going to have to come back and say that the ball was off of WV?  That would've been horrible, so they (not so quickly) figured out that it could be deemed "an inadvertent whistle," and get the ball to the correct team.  Though likely technically correct as to the letter of the law, I don't agree with Seth Davis.  It's  better they got the ball to the correct team in such a critical spot with a quasi-questionable rules interpretation than giving it to the wrong team because a ref very badly ####ed up.

Thinking about this more:

The ratings have been good this year, but usually they're meh.  We have CBSSN et al desperate for content/programming (as the $ paid for MLB playoffs indicate and the S16 games are in the MLB neighborhood in terms of marketability), and with Tuesday and Wednesday of this week being very poor in terms of sports programming-- among the worst days of the year currently.  Meanwhile, the NCAAT has pent up inventory of S16 games; with the late Thursday games going unseen by most of the country.

There's a win-win for fans and for TV $$$ that is operationally feasible if they deployed a different model than the one currently.
