***Official 2017 NCAA Hoops Tourney thread: Congrats UNC, all the refs from NCCG should be banned for life*** (2 Viewers)

Congrats to Don't Noonan. If anyone told me a few days ago that Oregon would make it to the Final 4 but Arizona and UCLA would get knocked out in the Sweet 16 round, I would have wagered a lot of money. But the Ducks deserve to be there.

Crazy as it is, I think that may actually be a NCAA violation.  May just be at on-campus events though.
That is crazy. If there is a rule preventing that then there is something seriously wrong.

That same chant happened earlier this year at home vs Georgia when Zion was in attendance.

Thanks!  I actually picked UCLA to win it all in my bracket beating Oregon in the Final Four.  Of course,  this was after Boucher got hurt.  I have maintained my opinion that Arizona was the 3rd best team in the PAC this year.

Not sure what you're looking for here?

You bumpeds an earlier one which I already admitted to being wrong this morning, ncaa not exactly easy to predict. You bump another from over a week ago tonight , feels like you were pretty excited for this one.

theyre a good team, they're earning it. Their road possibly the easiest road to a title game of any 1 seed on memory - 16/9/4/11/ (possibly) 7. It's a good road for a sound team. They get there and then beat UK/Oregon/UNC, they'll have certainly earned it.

Still not sure what you're looking for, but I guess congrats GM

Gonzaga and Oregon fans:

Breathe it in.  It's real.  Your team is in the FINAL FOUR!

Have fun with it all week.  Your team earned its spot, and don't let anyone tell you any different.

And of course, have a blast on Saturday.  Cheer them on from the layup lines in warmups to the final buzzer.  Win or lose, they played in the FINAL FOUR.

Enjoy it.  I'll be watching the games Saturday and Monday like I always do.

That's probably because you spend more time posting the same things in the political threads than watching sports.

Congrats. Ducks looked great.  They dominated defensively around the rim and hit clutch three pointers. Took KU out of their game.  This was not KU playing poorly- Oregon earned this.
Pretty much in agreement with this.  Only thing I'd add is how impressive Oregon's transition defense was - they did a great job getting back and clogging the fastbreak passing lanes.  The play I'll remember a long time was one in the second half where Jackson got possession with room to run, stated the Break himself up the middle, saw Mason find a seam and get behind the defense, threw the pass, and Oregon closed the hole and forced the turnover.  Usually KU gets a layup on plays like that even when they don't have the numbers edge, spirit-breaking buckets that trigger big runs.  Oregon wasn't having that.

Well, ratfart.

Was a winnable game on paper, favorable location, but didn't get it done.

Still doesn't take away how much fun they were to watch this season, overhauling the offense but still winning their 13th straight conference title and breaking a record with 28 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Wish they played four great games in the NCAAs, but wow the three good ones they played sure were fun.

Frank Mason III was an afterthought in his recruiting class by seemingly everyone but Bill Self,  When you look at the other names in that class: Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, Frank Selden, Brannen Greene, Connor Frankamp... never would have guessed the future NPOY of the group would have ended up being Mason.  I'll miss watching him play in crimson and blue, and given his height and playing style, I doubt we will see much of him in the NBA.

Losing four, maybe five starters, so the reload will need to be quick next year to keep the streaks going.  If Graham comes back it's a bit less complicated - he didn't play great tonight but he's been a great player for three seasons - but next season's edition will be an inexperienced bunch that will need to come together quick.

Enjoy the games tomorrow, and of course the Final Four.  I'll be watching, too.

The Ducks offense got kind of gross down the stretch there. But they were at least spinning a lot of time off before either committing a shot-clock violation (twice?) or forcing something bad. A dumb shot after 25 seconds is better than a dumb shot after 10 seconds, I guess. KU just didn't have enough possessions to catch up by that point.

not a hoops guy. at all. matter of fact, you couldn't pay me to watch an NBA game   :X

but, this tournament, this 'one bullet in the chamber' single elimination #### is pure theater ... if it's on, ya gotta watch - fan or not - it's that compelling.  sat trough a few complete games thus far, and have not been disappointed by the level of play or the thrill of it all.  top-notch sports stuff going on here

it's a remarkable few weeks, can only imagine how much more amazing it is for fans, alum, etc ... no other yearly competition does it this well.

last time i really followed was back in '89, when the fat man himself, Francesa, went on the Imus show and predicted Seton Hall would make the championship game ... that fat bast nailed it, and i cleaned up with the wager (loss to Michigan notwithstanding).  of course, it's been all downhill for him since in the prediction game, but i jumped on that call (being a Big East fan made it doubly rewarding for me).

hope to follow the season more closely next year, this tourney is bringin' me back

I may have posted this before, but Mason prepped in the town I live in (I can hear the revelry trumpets from my back deck each morning and evening - it's that close to my house). I saw him play live the year before he went to Kansas, only because I wanted to see what Maryland was getting in his teammate Damonte Dodd. I don't remember a whole lot of Mason's plays in that game, mainly because Massenutten was dunking most of the time on that poor opponent. I think the final was like 140-50. All five starters had D1 scholarships. Massenutten shut the hoops program down the next year (lack of money was the official line), but started it back up this year and are loaded again.

Anyway, it was apparent watching him back then that Mason was good, but I never thought I was watching a  NCAA NPOY candidate. He has to go down as one of the best players in KU history right?

After this game, Bill Self will be 2-7 in the elite 8. He has won 72% of his tournament games otherwise.

And as a long time KU fan, they DO tighten up in the elite 8 for whatever reason.

So I dont know, but like I have said, we have seen this before.
I lean towards them having a cake conference that they cruise through every season...end up with a top seed...which affords them favorable matchups and home field advantages...then eventually have to play someone solid at the Elite Eight.

I dunno. I think it's more an outlier based on a small sample than anything.

Cheers to @Don't Noonan and the handful of Zags fans around here whose aliases I'm too lazy to go back and look up- I wanna say @5Rings maybe?  They put up with a lot of friendly ####-talking about postseason success around here. One cool thing about college basketball postseason is that there's more than one winner, Final Four is worth toasting and raising a banner no matter what happens when you get there.

Whether it should be or not, getting to the FF is a HUGE resume check mark for both coaches & schools - and fans.

I remember when Maryland finally got there in 2001, it felt like it validated all of the near-misses: the '74 team that couldn't go, though it was one of the top 3 teams in the nation; the '75 team that make the Elite Eight; the 1980 team that may have been the best of all of them; the mid-90s teams with Joe Smith.

Even the horror of the 2001 FF - blowing a 20 point lead to ####### DUKE - couldn't completely stain that run. It also helps that the Terps came back the next year and won the whole thing.

2001 got Gary Williams into the HOF, IMO, even if he hadn't won it in 2002.

CBB and the NBA need to do away with that farce. Such a ridiculous setup they have going.
I love the one and done.  It helps programs like Wisconsin who get the 2nd and 3rd tier recruits and develops them over 4 years.  Adds parity to the game IMO.

I missed the games yesterday, but really shocked Oregon beat Kansas.  Michigan played a pretty lousy game against them and still should have won.  That is how the NCAA tournament rolls.  Congrats.

The best thing about today is at least Kentucky or NC will lose today.  The worst thing is one of them will win.

These are the Tar Heels for the last two seasons - top team, no lotto picks. Just a healthy bunch of either late 1sts or 2nd rounders and some Euro caliber players in the mix. Bryce/Paige, Berry/Jackson - Jackson prob a late 1st rounder, hopefully he returns and moves up to a mid-first if his game improves the same it did YoY Soph to Jr.

I'm really excited for today's game.  This run is amazing and I would love to see it continue.

I'm a Gamecock fan because of basketball.  I grew up watching Carolina basketball during the Frank McGuire era. The big runs of the early 70s are vague as I was only seven when we left the ACC and ten at the last NCAA trip before '88.  Even though they were mediocre at best the rest of the decade, they were on TV nearly every week thanks to those early years.

So, regular doses of Carolina basketball sealed my fandom.  Football?  I can't remember when I saw my first Carolina football game on TV.  You just didn't get a lot of college football on TV then, especially with an independent school.

Factor in the disappointment from going out in the first round in '97 and '98 as #2 and #3 seeds, and the muted joy of two consecutive NIT titles in '05 and '06, and you get a bunch of excited people wearing garnet and black.

Now the men and women are in the Elite Eight!  Hell yes ... Go Cocks!!!

Well, I hope our dreams are realized today. I'm similar in that I started watching and attending Gamecock basketball, Men's and Women's, first.

We saw this happen a lot with Altman when he coached K-State.  It's like he's a throwback to the pre-shotclock days when some coaches would stall up four points with the ball in the second half.  He's very fortunate his players hit a few guarded threes at the end of those shot clocks.

Yeah only three Big XII teams got farther in the NCAA Tournament than Duke did this year.  That conference sucks.

A theory more grounded in reality is the quick turnaround from the regional semifinal to regional final. You've got 48 hours at most between games, don't even know who the opponent is until that 48 hour window opens up, and the opponent is either someone who has been great all season or someone playing well enough to knock off a pre-Tournament favorite or two.

Self needs more than one day between games to properly prepare.  It's a weakness. We see it during conference season a couple times every season when they play great on Saturday afternoon then lay an egg on Big Monday.  Seen it a bunch of times at the NCAAs.  It's a bummer, but it's not a fireable offense given everything else he brings to the program, including toupee-shopping advice to the boosters.

Thank God that Kansas got knocked out.

Now if there is a way that both Kentucky and North Carolina lose today, that would be awesome!!!

And yes I know they are playing each other, just hoping that they both lose.

Yeah.

This team for me was a struggle to root for. Been a Kansas fan my whole life, but this team was a tough one.

On one hand, I love what Self has done with the program. I loved watching Frank Mason turn into what he became, and loved watching Landon Lucas stick around and just play hard and work hard every day.

But....I hate LaGerald Vick and what he did. I hate what Josh Jackson did that night at the bar, and I hate what appears to be some serious issues within Kansas basketball on how they handled the whole situation internally. On top of that, you have the incident within the players dorm with the underage girl that I'm not sure has anything to do with them, but the incident still reeks.

And that bitter taste in my mouth about the above paragraph made rooting for this team tough. I'm disappointed that Frank Mason lost, and Landon Lucas, but I don't feel one bit bad for LaGerald Vick and his smug-### look every time he dunks a basketball, knowing what he did to that girl. And Josh Jackson for leaving a stain on his quick legacy in Lawrence.

Time to change your ugly personality.  I know you're working on it, occasionally editing/deleting posts that offer nothing but meanness towards others, but you still have a long way to go.  I know it's just a message board, but it's still fair to expect basic human decency here.  Even from you.
lol your avatar has nothing to do with you personally.

The comment I deleted was the truth.  Why would anyone value opinions from people who don't understand the market?

Just saying...drop Kansas in the ACC.

Are they winning 13 ACC titles in a row, ever?

Even with two days to prepare for each game...he ain't winning that many.

And therefore not being gifted a #1 seed almost every year because of it.

How in the hell can someone not root for Gonzaga?  What's your beef with them, other than the east coast west coast BS, because I'm not buying that at all?
People hate Gonzaga because they come from a weak conference and fans of middling Power 5 schools feel they should get better seeds than Gonzaga simply because of that. They usually haven't watched a minute of them play or even looked at their OOC schedule. See it EVERY year.

Combine this with the myth that Gonzaga usually underperforms their seed level and you've got a recipe for some negative feelings to develop over the years.

There's no other reason to hate this team other than maybe Josh Perkins' haircut.

That's actually in play nowadays.
Yeah, I probably shouldn't have worded it that way. Apologies to all.

If I were forced to root for one of those teams, it would have to be Kentucky (God, that makes me feel filthy just typing it). I can never, ever, cheer for UNC in hoops. I don't care if they are playing a team featuring Hitler, Saddam, Bin Laden, Stalin, and Don Henley.

Thanks TF.  My mind is blown that my buddies and I are buying tickets to the final four and NC game.  Whoa woulda thunk?

i had the money but was too cheap to buy tickets to the 49ers last SB, Giants last WS, or Warriors series.  Not this time.  This is a lighting striking/Haleys comet type deal.  Never imagined in my wildest dreams...

You're always a class act.  I want to go to this so bad but my wife and accountant are saying no way. :(

We found some good price ticket packages online.  I'm not going Saturday due to Little League games I coach ( I know ?) but Monday is on if we are lucky enough to get that far!

That's awesome.  I shot my proverbial wad on the Ducks game in Dallas vs Ohio St.  Right before the twins were born.  Disappointed with the outcome (of the game not the twins, though ask me tomorrow) but the experience was incredible.  Knew that was probably my last sports hurrah for a long time and savored it.   Enjoy!
