***OFFICIAL 2018 YANKEE THREAD*** Gleyber Day (1 Viewer)

Epic meltdown by the bullpen. Everyone else fought and scraped to stay in that game. Severino fanned 12. Judge and Sanchez knock in 3 runs. Then German, Clippard, and a tired Betances. Hitting the strike zone felt like an ordeal every pitch. It was god awful.

Wasn't just quick and easy either.  German total dumpster fire.  Clippard partial dumpster fire, but gets out of it with an excruciating 11 pitch AB to Davidson.  Would have been one thing if Betances just blew it then.  Instead, he scrambles back to 2 outs and THEN blows it.

Miguel andujar 4 rbi in his major league debut

And possibly Dustin Fowler up tomorrow. 

It's too bad Torres got hurt because he'd be up. The team needs bullpen arms but otherwise I think they will be fine

How long before they call up Chance Adams to the pen? All things being good until August, you have to think he'll be added for the playoff push. Here's to hoping he's like Severino last year or Phil Hughes back 09. 

They need something. After Chapman, Betances, and warren, that pen has been garbage. Clippard and German need to be optioned to Little League.

I also think they need a 1b. Not sure who's available

 
Sanchez is a different guy this year. He let his success get to his head. While he is still a great hitter, his defense has been putrid all year and last night he didn't run a ground ball out.

I think it's more likely we see Domingo Acevedo in the pen this year than Adams.  I think they'll bring Adams up as a starter.

 
Well the not running out the ground ball was on purpose because his groin is still a little sore so will give him a pass on that.

 yeah Adams will be called up as a starter but might shift to pen in September due to innings limits. Not sure if Montgomery has an innings limit either. 

 
What is this lineup going to look like? I'd imagine that Gardner, Elsbury, Judge are pretty static meaning not a daily gig in his future?

I think he'll play the Hicks role.  So, rest the other guys and get regular at bats.  With Holliday down, there are DH ABs to be had as well.  The big question is...who do they play at 1B?  Romine is a solid back-up C, but he can't play there long term.  I'm wondering if Headley can play there and Andujar/Wade get the ABs at 3B.

Judge has future 1B written all over him. Might as well get him started now.

Woa. I missed this. I guess they do need a 1st baseman. Damn. Bird hurt, Austin hurt, Carter putrid. 

This is the mid-season struggle we should have expected. We can only hope they weather the injuries and slumps and finish as strong as they started. I have faith in Girardi to right the ship.

Completely agree on the skill set, but nature dictates that you worry about how the body of someone that size holds up over time. You're stacked with OFs up and down the organization. Do what you can to negate the wear and tear and put him there

Guy has a cannon and is rated as a plus outfielder defensively. Perhaps his size will lead to his body taking a pounding and they eventually need to make the move to keep him healthy but I don't think now is the time.

Yea. I can see 1st base in the card after he turns 30 perhaps. But for now he's too good in RF. 

 
Can someone explain to me what Girardi is thinking by moving Judge to the 2 hole so Didi can bat 3rd? I know he likes to alternate hitters R-L-R-L, but come on. How do you bat Judge 2nd?

more at bats I guess? When the lineup becomes shorter (which it certainly has with all the injuries and guys like Romine, Torreyes (although he has had some key hits) and whatever young guy gets called up today) I think you want to guarantee that your best hitter gets as many cracks at it as possible.

Just playing Devil's advocate. Maybe Joe is just going insane.

 
Chris Carter making a return.  Fowler also up.  Not sure what the other move is going to be to get Carter on the roster.  They listed 26 when it was posted today.

Conventional thinking has changed recently with the thought process being the best hitter should hit higher to get more at bats. Honestly I don't think it matters much 2nd vs 3rd. judge, Sanchez, and didi are their 3 best hitters no matter what order they hit.

As bad as Carter is at least he has power. I'm assuming refsnyder gets sent down. He has no above average skill.

Not only not in the lineup, back to Scranton.

Guess they saw enough of Mason Williams as well. DFA'd. Greg Bird to the 60 day DL but I guess that's retroactive so who the hell knows.

Guess they just really need a first baseman and Torreyes makes Andujar unnecessary for the time being.

Totally. Kid just barrels into the wall like his hair's on fire trying to snag the first ball he's ever seen the big leagues. Just an awful situation. Just hope this isn't the last we ever see of him.

 
Why can't we have nice things? It's like the baseball gods gave us Judge and Sanchez and said, "that's enough for now."

Too early, injury-driven call up. I hope it doesn't mess up his development, because he's a year away. I was hoping to see a September callup maybe, to give him a taste like they did with Judge last year. Not this.

ETA: I heard they've been toying with the idea of making him a third baseman. I'd love to see him dominate and replace Headly. It won't happen this year, but 2018 is very possible.

Man, even when Pineda only gives up 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings, it's some of the most nerve wracking 6 innings of baseball. His stat line looks like he dominated, but he has runners on base all the time and his command is like playing roulette. 

He's a fourth starter on a playoff rotation, not a #2. It'll cost the Yankees come November. As well Tanaka, who's a #3 maybe a #2 at best. 

This team needs a Chris Sale (or for Severino to keep developing into a Chris Sale type ace).

Agreed too early for him. Fowler was more ready and so was torres. Sucks
