***OFFICIAL 2018 YANKEE THREAD*** Gleyber Day (1 Viewer)

He moves his back foot when he swings. It's bizarre.
I'll say this for him: he's built to be a baseball player. Call it great training, good genetics, devoting himself obsessively to the sport, whatever. He just looks the part. Reminds me a bit of O'Neill in his prime.

Yep. We've been MUSHED! Francesa spent all of February and March telling us that the Yankees could not compete this year. A few weeks ago, he finally gave in and admitted that the team was awesome. We're 6-17 since that time. You can't make it up.

A lot of this has to do with injuries - Bird and Austin in particular are devastating - and no one expected Chris Carter to light up the BA and defense, but he's been even worse than we feared; the guy led the NL in homers in '16 and has been sent to AAA twice this year. We knew Headley would be a weakness, but his defense is great and if we squeezed .250/20 out of him at the plate, that would have been enough. He's so effing streaky though and he just KILLS rallies. Hicks is gone. Castro is gone.

The pitching is about what we expected, save for the slumps by Betances and Chapman.

All that said, there's A LOT to point to 2018 as the start of a new franchise. Judge is a Jeteresque, a once-in-a-generation talent on par with Trout and Harper. What a ### #### find. And he's the kind of person who can be a team leader. Does anyone doubt he'll be the next Yankees' captain?

We all knew what Sanchez was at the plate. He and Judge will be this team's Ortiz and Manny (the most feared 3-4 punch I've witnessed in my lifetime). He's still learning how to call a game though. A full year in the majors will be good for him.

Didi's found his potential at the plate. He's become everything Cashman hoped for when we traded for him. The same can be said of Hicks.

Severino is/can be our #1 ace. He's not quite there yet, but the Severino of '17 is a tremendous leap from '16. I believe in him now. He just needs another year to learn more of the art of pitching.

Montgomery was a hell of a find. He'll take over Sabathia's #3 spot next year. He reminds me of Pettite. He'll never blow anyone away with power, but he has a lot to work with and is as steady as they come. Remember Pettite during the 09 series run? That's how I see Montgomery.

Chance Adams will debut in September, then slip into the rotation next year. There's hope there.

Look at the rotation (absent any trades) next year -

1. Severino

2. Tanaka (he really is a #2 guy, not an ace)

3. Montgomery

4. Adams

5. FA?

Please, please just trade Pineda. Let him cocktease some other team. We'll take a few peanuts and a scrub for him. If they could get a decent middle reliever for him, I'd be happy as hell.

Can they convert Frazier to 3rd base?

Can one of Bird or Austin become a stable 1st baseman?

This isn't their year. They played like crazy for the first half and a lot of great things have happened. But like all the experts said, they're a year away. If they squeeze into the playoffs, great, the experience will be good for the kids. But I don't think anyone sees a serious run in 2017. I'm ok with that.

Ellsbury pulls up on a looper that lands 2 feet on front of him. Next guy gets a hit and ####ty Yankee pen is forced into action.

What a freaking ##### that guy is.

Pineda with a partially torn UCL.  Likely needs TJ, getting a second opinion.  Mitchell and Cessa getting starts in 2 of the first 6 games after the break since we have the DH with Boston on Sunday. <_<

Cashman said Chance Adams is an option to replace Pineda long term.

Jesus. What an awful break for the guy. Worst possible timing.

Never quite put it together. At least the Yanks wont have to drop 9 figures on him now.

Honestly? I feel bad for the guy and wouldn't wish an injury on most anyone, but I'm glad it happened when it happened. Pineda was a constant cocktease, showing just enough flash to keep us hoping he'd develop into a stud #2 starter....but never doing it. Now Cashman won't be tempted to resign him and Chance Adams can get his chance.

He was starting to cool off a bit before the All Star break. But now it's becoming concerning.

I'm sure he'll bounce back by August. You don't play an entire three months like he did as a fluke.

Of course that was a fluke. Nothing in his past indicated that kind of performance.

He may end up becoming one of the best players in baseball and that still may be his greatest stretch of his career.

The more I think about it, the more I like this trade. Rutherford is good, but we already have a logjam of 5 starter-caliber outfielders in Frazier, Garner, Ellsbury, Hicks, and Judge, three of them young guys who can start for years.

Todd Frazier is a declining waste of a roster spot, but I suppose he'll help spell first and third bases.

The real bounty is the bullpen help. We ditched Tyler Clippard! Yes! David Roberson is back in pinstripes! Yes!

I'd rather have landed a starter (if they start Cessa again I'm going to puke), but this shored up a problem area and made the bullpen, once again, a strength of this team.

Really like C Frazier. Kid looks like a 5 tool player and hustles his ### off. When Hicks comes back I really hope him and Frazier play everyday.

Always hated the ellsbury signing. Hopefully the money they're paying him doesn't keep him in the lineup

Ditto.

But, fwiw, he was the last of the BIG AGING FREE AGENT SIGNING! contracts Cashman handed out. That it's a rotten deal only pushed Cash further down the road of stocking the farm and developing talent.

How many more crapfests by Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa do we have to sit through before they trade for Gray or call up Chance Adams? It's brutal out there.

I honestly dont know what they are waiting for to call up Adams. They called up all the other kids. Meanwhile Montogmery looks like he needs a little break too.

Monte had a rough outting. They happen. He'll bounce back. The guy is unflappable.

I guess. It was just so incredibly obvious that it was bad, right from the start.  Other than his freaky 2011 (had to be on roids, right?) he's basically been a like .290 slap hitter with no power.  His best asset was his speed, which was never going to hold up over the length of that ridiculous contract. The only appeal was that it was you took a chunk out of Boston as well.  (and they went and spent the money they saved on an even more terrible signing in Sandoval the following year)

Not too happy about Girardi saying they're sending Frazier down once Hicks is healthy. I understand that you can't carry 5 outfielders, but it's clear that Ellsbury is only staying in the Show because of his contract. Frazier has utterly outplayed him. He's out hit him and out ran him and he's nearly as good in the field.

But do you sit Gardner every day? Hicks? Can't keep him up here if he doesnt get regular playing time. I said earlier I'd make him the everyday LF, Hicks everyday CF, and mix and match at DH with Gardner & Holliday.

In other good news: Girardi came to his senses and is keeping Clint Frazier on the team.

I wouldn't be adverse to ditching the other Frazier though. That guy is like Headly Part Duex, only without the hot streaks.

Did I mishear? I thought they said Frazier had played his way into staying.

Maybe that was just David Cone giving his opinion.
Hes earned his way to the starting lineup over Ellsbury but once Hicks comes back he said early in the week he will be sent down. I heard nothing new since then.

Frazier has two 2-out rbi singles today.  I hope they keep him up.   Games on MLB network for out of state folks.

I'd trade ellsbury for a bucket of balls.

Other than his hilarious talent for getting catcher's interference calls he brings nothing to the table
