*Official 2019 Philadelphia Eagles Thread* - Season's over; Go Away Now... (1 Viewer)

Isn’t there an ex-steeler who works for ESPN or NFLN? I can’t recall which station but I remember a story from them saying this was always there with AB. Paraphrasing but he said something like in Brown’s first or second year they were in the weight room and Brown was walking back and fourth calling himself the greatest, or something like that. The guy than turned to the trainer he was working with and said “the worst decision this team can ever make is giving that guy money”

Ex-Steelers star crushes Antonio Brown with 2012 story: 'give him money, you're going to create a monster'
Yeah I guess it could be true but it didn’t get out publicly back then.  Nobody ever thought of him as a diva type like a TO, Moss, Ocho Cinco, etc.  that’s why he was so loved by Steelers fans.

hes looked like a diva for years to me.  maybe not year one or two in the league but he changed fairly quickly

So Denver gives up a mid round pick for Flacco. Are people still wondering why Howie's trying to trade Foles (if they can swing it)?

In order for us to try and trade him we need to clear like 25 million and we’re over the cap. I don’t think he’s trying very hard.

Also this shouldn’t be a shock. Flacco is still under contract for 3 more years, pretty much always injury free, has a SB and is a perfect bridge. That’s pretty solid for one of two 4th round picks they had. If we let Foles walk we already get a 3.

Flacco going to a QB needy team doesn’t help us to trade him either. Just removes more competition

wasnt flacco injured like most of just last season with a bad hip?

I think that based off of the Flacco deal, its going to be even more impossible to trade nick foles. The mindset is to obviously get better than a 3rd round COMP pick and to keep him away from a division rival. Does a 4th rounder do that? Not sure, but i'd think that its about equal value to a 2020 3rd Comp pick. Then, why deal with the headache of our cap for only equal value? Denver was one of two teams (Jaguars) who i actually thought may trade for Foles. With Flacco gone to Denver, whatever little power we still may have held, disappears. Why trade for, and take on, a 25 million dollar contract at this point, when you could wait a couple of weeks and sign him to your own contractual terms. To keep him out of our rivals hands? I guess. But why keep ourselves in Cap Purgatory, up until the start of the new year, for what seems like an extremely long shot, at best.

Never felt like Miami would make a move. All signs point to bottoming out (unintentionally, im sure) for next years QB crop.

In my humble opinion, the best we can hope for now is that Foles decides to sign with the Jags over the Giants or Skins(less likely). There are not a lot of other QB needy teams looking to "bridge the gap". Most either have their QB, just drafted their QB, or want to draft their QB and foles doesn't want to be a backup.

The only reason they have done what they have done is because they think they have a trade ready to go.

Good for him.  He still sucks outside that one Superbowl run
I don’t have any opinion on Flacco. I see a lot of numbers that point to him sucking but those numbers never seem to show what he’s had to work with. Off the top of my head, he may have had some of the worst skill players around him over the last 5 years. Prior to that he seemed to do ok. He’s just a system QB that needs weapons and there’s quite a few QB’s like that.

Off the top of my head, he may have had some of the worst skill players around him over the last 5 years.
I just looked them up and it had to be a bottom 3-5 group over the last 5 years.

His best players of that period were:

Ray Rice in 2013 and that was his last year in the league and averaged 3.1 ypc. Justin Forsett, Terrence West and Alex Collins. Awful

Steve Smith came when he was 35. Mike Wallace, Torey Smith, Kamar Aiken and Marlon Brown. I actually thought Smith and Wallace were decent until I looked more into them.

Dallas Clark, Dennis Pita and Owen Daniels at TE. This group combined with the receivers in an all passing league is laughable.  Dumb luck will land you better players than this

His OC’s were Marty Mornhinweg, Marc Trestman, Gary Kubiak and Cam Cameron.

Just curious, how well stat and record wise would you say Foles does with that group listed above?

Well, they're both average QBs with one ring so....
It's semantics, but I would say up and down QB's vs. average QB's.

And categorization of QB's is funny. Consider stats from the following 3 QB's:

QB1: 59.1% regular season winning percentage, 88.5 regular season QB rating, 67% playoff winning percentage, 98.8 playoff QB rating, 1 Super Bowl win.

QB2: 58.9% regular season winning percentage, 84.1 regular season QB rating, 67% playoff winning percentage, 88.6 playoff QB rating, 1 Super Bowl win.

QB3: 50.4% regular season winning percentage, 84.1 regular season QB rating, 67% playoff winning percentage, 87.4 playoff QB rating, 2 Super Bowl wins.

QB1 and QB2 are what you consider average, and QB3 is going to get into the Hall of Fame. I find that fascinating.

This is why I don’t engage in any argument where someone uses “winning percentage”. It’s the largest team sport of the major 4 and the main one this argument is used. It’s beyond stupid and right up there with using pro-Bowls as an argument.

Good thing he's getting a totally different OC then...

That's who I was talking about I mentioned Ryan Clark who basically destroyed AB and called him a cancer back then

According to NBC Sunday Nigh Football twitter Den did enquire on Nicke Foles. Fangio was however in Dal with Flacco awhile back and probably felt more comfortable going with someone he knew already

Clark was past his prime and seemed to do nothing outside of when he was with Peyton. I thought AC was his best RB, I think You could do a lot worse thenTorrey Smith and Mike Wallace but both contradict each other as both have a similar skill set. Pita would be his best TE by far but is so injury prone. Hasn't he missed like 3 full seasons with major hip issues? Either way even with just that group it's terrible. His OC's aren't anything to sneeze at either but Kubiak isn't as bad as the others. Kubiak is the last HC also who had the Broncos to anything close to consistent too. Overall it's a fairly avg group I don't think Foles does much better with.

QB3 is Eli Manning right? Has to be.

I also hate using the Super Wins as well. Dan Marino is much better then Joe Namath who won a SB and people use Marino's 0 rings as an excuse why he wasn't better. Eli Manning is he really a HoFer without the SB wins? The first win incredible fluky. He won 1 because his defense carried him into the playoffs the one year and then he got hurt. The 2nd one was he got hot at the end of the season and continued in the playoffs which was his first SB win all because Tyre makes a catch 9 out of 10 times isn't made.

It has to be but I'm shocked that his win % is that low.
116 W to 114 losses in his career. The Giants over his career have had such inconsistent teams. Remember they weren't even projected a SB contender the 1st SB they won. The 2nd one came after a season they had a 500 or losing record and the offense limped into the playoffs while the defense carried them the 2nd half of the year. Manning's Giants have always given us a good fight but overall he's been on some terrible inconsistent teams. When Eli is doing well he's had a defense and over the last few seasons he has almost no defense. His skill guys have sucked over the last few seasons until OBJ and Barkley as well and the Line hasn't done them any favors protecting him.

Also I knew it was Eli do to the low winning % as I looked this up 2-3 weeks ago. I listen to a podcast and one of the guys is a Giants fan. Was looking at Eli's stats on PFR and saw is win total. I was arguing how I didn't think ELI was a HoF and people defend he is do to 2 rings. One because of a miraculous catch and the other he limped into the playoffs on the back of the defense and got hot. Through his career like most of his teams he's been terrible inconsistent year to year. One year he looked like a top 10 QB and the next he looked AVG at best or worst. I don't think HoF is for inconsistency and based off of if you won a ring or not. I still have my blood boil whenever I see Namath mentioned in the HoF. Dude threw more INT's then TDs in his career only reason he got in there was because of one of the biggest uPsets in SB history. He doesn't win that game I think we have people debating today if Joe is a HoF player or not.

Maybe they know he wants more than they are willing to give?  We need secondary badly.  I'm a little surprised they wouldn't want him.
They aren't going to franchise tag him because we are tight on the cap. Someone is going to pay bigger money than we will be able to. I hope i'm wrong, because i would like to see him back with our birds (I assume the FO feels the same way)

To-Do List:

Jason Peters is 37 years old, so the Philadelphia Eagles need to be serious about a replacement this offseason or it won't end up mattering if the front office picked Carson Wentz or Foles at quarterback.

With any luck, the Eagles won't take the same approach with Peters as they did at cornerback. Ronald Darby is a free agent, and middle- to late-round gambles like Avonte Maddox (fourth round) and Jalen Mills (seventh) have face-planted. The Eagles need to treat it like the premium position it is and splurge on a top free agent or get one high in the draft.

Running back wasn't much more encouraging with Wendell Smallwood and a hodgepodge of others leading the charge. A proven veteran such as a Mark Ingram II might be a good idea in free agency, though good names should fall on draft day, too.

Find a long-term plan at left tackle

did these guys not watch us much?  how can you talk bad about maddox?  he was great as a rookie.  thats lazy and just plain wrong

Everyone else is doing it so why not....

What would you give for Antonio Brown??
Nothing. He is a diva and a cancer. We don't need that and elite receivers in the last twenty years generally don't win Super Bowls unless there are two of them (Harrison and Wayne, Holt and Bruce).

Moss, Owens, Brown (other than his rookie year when he was not a factor), Hopkins, Bryant, Jones, Green all have one thing in common: no super bowl wins. Only Moss and Owens played in a Super Bowl and they only played in one each. I think the key to offenses these days is a really good QB and many good offensive options rather than one or two elite options. Look at how the Patriots win and how we won last year.

Besides, we have no cap room to go out and sign or trade for a big contract

Would much rather have bell
this. And the cap situation is not as dire as it currently seems. There is lots of restructuring and/or cutting of players that we can, and will, do without much penalty in dead money. Add in the 20 million that nick foles will free up and we can potentially be sitting 30-40 mil under the cap. Making any FA acquisition possible.

I would much rather have bell than brown though. Trading for brown isn't as easy as throwing the steelers a pick they will accept. Browns contract has no guaranteed money. He wants guaranteed money. So you need to give the steelers what they want and then give brown what he wants. And you get back an extremely talented 31 year old WR (best in the league the past 6 years) and all the headache he brings with him. To me, he is TO with twitter. We dont need that. Bell gives us longevity at the RB spot, Brown gives us hopefully a couple good headache free years. #SignLibertyBELL #AntoniNO

Mills wasn't falling flatten his face either. There were fans when we had guys off the street in there wishing Mills was in there. Mills is serviceable I just think he needs to move to Safety. Maddox was iMHO a steal in this draft where we got him.

Eagles resigned Jake Elliot and Ricky Lovato to 1 yr deals through 2020. Eagles also unfortunately released Special Teams ACE and former Captain Chris Maragos. Sad to see him go. Met him the offseason before the SB and getting hurt. Came for a promotion and autograph signing at my work. Was an awesome guy and he knew my co workers son as he is one of Chris' coaches. Couldn't stop singing his praises and how all the guys loved him. Overall he was great with the people there.

I had a customer with a young son with some issues and was autistic but just like me was a huge Eagles fan. When his parents would come in he'd always try to find me. We've become pretty close over the years and he's now 10 known him for about 6 yrs right now. Always talks football and baseball with me. So when he came in he was kind of shy about meeting Maragos. He was more scared of Swoop actually then Chris. So I devised a plan. I went up to Chris and got his autograph and then told him the situation. I got the Cheerleaders with him with me and brought Swoop over to him. The Girls talked to him (boy was he a real ladies man with those girls it was impressive). We got him ok with Swoop who did his usual comedy stuff. I had the guy in the costume steal my hat and do a few other things to make him feel comfortable. Then It was time to go meet Chris. Chris was amazing with him. Telling him about his own kids. Afterawhile this kid was a human encyclopedia to Chris mentioning highlights of his career. Will never forget that day. Chris became one of his favorite players. We had to have a Long talk after he got hurt. Might have to have another when I see the kid with Chris being gone.

It sounds like do to the injury Maragos career is over. Pretty unfortunate situation for one of the good guys in the biz

Agreed. Get a top line back in the draft and address other needs like O-line and line backer. I’ll be the first to admit that watching Bell the last couple years he’s very entertaining with his style but how much is his success due to the team? Conner and even Samuel come in and look really good too. I don’t think Doug is every gonna have the philosophy of using one bell-cow back. Granted, he could change his mind if he had a talent like Bell but again, I’d rather them draft a high end talent and pour as much money into keeping that offensive line top notch to protect our greatest asset—Wentz. I’d even be happy if they signed Ingram to go with hopefully a fully recovered Clement (who looked really really good in his role in2017). I’d still rather them get a rookie first or second round though.

I hope they don't take a sniff at either Bell or Brown. They have been nothing but a headache for Pittsburgh and we don't need to be bringing self-centered "me" guys into the locker room. That is a cancer that spreads rapidly.  DeAngelo Williams and James Conner both proved that Bell is nothing special. It's just an interchangeable slide in the Pittsburgh offense or everyone succeeds. And brown is a 31 year old receiver. He loses 1/10 off of his 40 time and he becomes just another guy.  And that time is coming quickly at 31 years old.

I would like nothing to do with Brown, at all. His "me" attitude and/or trade demands from Pitt and/or his contract demands is just a hard NO all around.  I was sour on Bell for a while, but I'm a little more friendly when it comes to the idea of bell now. He did exactly what he said he was going to do and sit out the 2018 season. He wanted a new contract and the team wouldn't give him what he was looking for. Selfish? Kind of, but he isn't required to sign a Franchise Tender. He stood by his word, knowing if he played, the steelers would have run him into the ground, with no concern for his future(since they wouldn't Franchise tag him again).  He willingly passed on 14 million dollars, betting on himself. Hasn't made a stink about it all season, nothing really. Basically crickets from the Bell camp. Fact is, the guy has rave reviews from his teammates on skill, drive, and work ethic. His numbers speak for themselves. Although Williams and Connor played well, filling in admirably, they are not leveon bell. Neither is giving you a baseline of 300 carries and 70 catches a year, while also being one of the better blockers in the league. A pure 3 down back where there is no reason to take him off the field unless he needs a quick breather.  Both those guys need a complimentary back, Bell does not. He is only 26 and wants a big contract with guaranteed money. If the Eagles can clear cap space (they can get 30-40 mil under the cap pretty easily), i'd say its worth looking into.

Its also a long shot, I know that, and there are more reasonably priced RB's who would fit the mold of what we do. Mark Ingram(next biggest contract after bell), Carlos Hyde(underrated and my gut feeling of who we get), Alex Collins(underrated and a RFA)... Using a 1 or 2 on a rookie is also a great option. Talent is going to fall in this draft based on how strong the Pass Rush class is(my dream pick is for josh jacobs from alabama slipping to us in the first, or moving up a bit to get him). None of the other FA or rooks would complicate the cap nor bring in any off the field issues, hopefully (which i honestly dont know, or think, would come with Bell. Definitely would with brown though)

I guess my bottom line is that we really just need to upgrade our RB position. If they can get bell and not break the cap doing it, I wouldn't be upset in the slightest. Imagine him lined up behind wentz, with Jeffery/Ahgolar/Wallace?/Ertz and a solid o-line. What does the defense do, who do they cover? It would be crazy! Thats a generational talent in my mind, in his prime, that doesn't need to be traded for. That doesn't happen often. If its a lesser FA that fits the mold, or a rookie, thats fine with me too. I dont care, just upgrade the position to give Wentz some more help and round out that offense.

There doesn't appear to be a lot of top tier RB talent in the draft. I see them taking one but not until the 4th or so. Which is fine. You just have to find a Cohen and not another Pumphrey.

No thanks to Bell or Brown. They'll want huge money and they are on the wrong end of their careers to give it to them.

I think Jacobs from bama would be great here but I think he goes before our pick and he's not worth trading up for imo

Ya know....that’s a really compelling argument you’ve laid out. Only 26? I did not know that. If Howie orchestrates it I certainly wouldn’t complain...

I won't lie I'd be happy getting Bell if Howie found some way to get him under the cap with contract parameters that if he F's up once we can cut him cold turkey

Bell quite? he was taking routine pot shots and liking people's tweets about how Pittsburgh needed him. it was pretty passive aggressive behavior by him on social meeting during the season and pretty childish.

I think Jacobs from bama would be great here but I think he goes before our pick and he's not worth trading up for imo
I would love Bennie Snell JR. and if you want a Younger Ingram Jacobs Teammate Damien Harris could be had. Obviously I have my Jordan Scarlett bias in the mid late rounds and I really love another Prospect fro North Dakota St in Bruce Anderson. That boy has some build and can run

Comp picks are out - looks like we get 2, a 4th and a 6th.  Not sure how that lines up with what we suspected.  I know we got the 4th because of Trey.
