Sorry to rain on your parade (well deserved), but Baltimore is destroying this league right now.  Be interesting if they can make it even competitive.

Having watched multiple GB games this year, I expected the Niners to win this week having Kittle back. Didn’t expect a blow out but the GB matchup didn’t scare me.

Defense just overwhelmed GB with their speed. They also tackled really well tonight. Nothing after the catch
The 49ers defense consistently came forward to attack the ball carrier or receiver while the Packers consistently waited for the ball carrier or receiver to come forward towards them as they gave ground.  One team believes in itself, the other is plagued by doubt and lack of backend communication and clarity.  It will be interesting to see how the 49ers look against the Ravens who certainly seemed formidable last night.

Everyones talking about how good the Ravens are. Yeah, theyre on a 6 game win streak and theyve scored 40+ in the last 3...but remember, Cleveland beat them in Baltimore back in week  4 (KC also beat them in week 3 in KC)

KC and CLE both threw for 300 yards and ran the ball really well (KC had 140 rush yards, CLE had 193) . The only other team to throw for 300 yds against them was Arizona in week 2, but Arizona only had 20 (yes, 20!!!) rush yards that game. The next highest passing yards total against the Ravens this season was 268 yards by New England, but they only had 74 rushing yards that week. Russel Wilson threw for the next highest yardage (241 yards), but Seattle only ran for 106 yards that game (27 of those yards were WIlsons, only 82 yards came from the RBs).

In the rest of their games, other than Andy Dalton throwing for 214 yards against them in week 6, no other QB has thrown for 200 or more yards against them. They have given up some rush yards the past few weeks (157 by the Bengals, and 122 by the Texans), but neither could get the passing game in gear (150yds and 110yds, respectively)

So if SF can get the running game going, and play action works like it has been, we can definitely beat them in their house, its just gonna take a good game both through the air and on the ground. Hopefully Breida plays, Coleman hasnt ran for squat the past few weeks. We also need to hit Jackson every chance we get, like Baltimore did to Kaep in the Super Bowl. Make him think about it every play. I wonder if anyone has done that yet...interesting stat: Both Jimmy and Lamar have both been sacked 22 times this year.

This wont only be SF's toughest test of the season, its also Baltimores toughest test.

Unfortunately Ill be driving to Alabama during the game and wont get to watch it live. Ill hopefully be able to hear most of it with Game Pass audio, and Ill watch the replay when I get back home Monday.

Baltimore's defense has been completely revamped since those early season games. They changed the rotation at ILB, got Jimmy Smith back, and traded for Marcus Peters. Also, the two recent rushing games you mention - go look at the scores. Both games were in garbage time at the half.

In any case, this week's game should be fun. I think you're right that teams need to hit Jackson and shake him up to get him making mistakes. The problem is - as Seattle, NE, Hou, and LA learned - that he's often hard to catch.

I think it's a FG margin of victory for the winner.

I was gonna mention their defense and how they've been playing, especially since the Peters trade. That defense is no joke. I'm hoping the short week has an effect, but it's not like the Rams gave them a physical fight, so I'm sure they're feeling ok today.

The Ravens Center got hurt last night, which will be a monster problem for them against that SF War Wagon up front if he doesn't play.

Yeah, I know. We haven't played anyone yet*... but come on. Even competitive?

You had Aaron Rodgers throwing for 100 yards against us, right?

Baltimore Sunday weather forecast calls for 90% chance of rain, with a high of 50 degrees and low of 37.

This game could be a defensive battle.

Pretty much the same weather as the Redskins game.

If it is in fact sloppy and wet, I think that would benefit us because it would slow down their offense.

Baltimore's field is in much better shape than DC's (so is any random hog pen in a monsoon).

I'll leave out the obligatory "the offense knows where it's going....." cliche.

I'd worry more about the wind, as M&T has an open end.

Just confirmed, hes out for the year. Will be interesting to see how this affects their offense.

Just mentioned on @nflnetwork #Ravens C Matt Skura will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered last night, a source said. Losing Skura, who was second in the AFC in Pro Bowl voting, is a rough one for Baltimore. He does a lot up front for their O Line.

Seems to me (and I surely don't know what I'm talking about) that Lamar's status as a quasi running back means they'd be more versatile in bad conditions than the Niners, who still need Jimmy to step back and throw the ball regularly.

Having lived through the Greg Roman experience, I'm more bearish on the Ravens' long term prospects than most, but I certainly would take Baltimore versus the spread this week and wouldn't be at all surprised if the Ravens won big.  I'm circling next week's Saints game as a key winnable game if the Niners want to make sure they stay on top in the NFC West and in the driver's seat for a bye.  My personal hope this week is that they avoid any more crippling injuries.  If Kittle is still struggling, for example, I hope the team plays it safe with his availability.

If we can get the run game going, we should be able to pick spots for big plays using play action. This team is built for football in bad weather, we just need to get back on track running the ball, which will eat clock, keep Lamar off the field, and keep our defense fresh. Long sustained drives are key. Fingers crossed.

As for the second bolded part, I agree. The way Lamar is playing, hes making every defense and DC look silly. Hopefully we are the team that finally slows him down, but I wouldnt be surprised if he continues his dominance.

The silver lining if we lose is we still control our own destiny, and I think we run the table after this week.

Lol.

I find the less time I spend talking on fan sites, the more I enjoy watching the games. A lot of 49er fans who post constantly are “Eyore” Types who expect the worst.  Then you have the trolls who claim every week is the week they will get exposed.

Looking forward to the rest of season schedule. Ravens, Saints, Rams and Seattle.

Yeah, I guess the good thing bout this place is there really arent a lot of trolls compared to 49er forums.

Happy turkey day, fellas!

San Fran is probably going to get beat by more than 10.  Only chance they have is to get up early and try to keep the Baltimore Offense off the field.  The way the Baltimore defense is playing (and on a short week - disadvantage offense) I don't see that happening.  This could get ugly if Baltimore gets up early.

Ill be watching somewhere between Tallahassee and Pensacola at a sports bar...not sure they even watch pro football up there. Lol.

Can't wait for kickoff!!!!

Glad you found a place to belly up for the game.

Hope it's a fun one with no big injuries on either side.

I'm going Ravens 20, 49ers 17

I know the same regime wasn't around when Roman was here, but I'd play Lamar Jackson exactly how teams played Kaepernick... take away the throws to the middle of the field and make him throw to the sidelines, and play contain with the ends.  Occasionally mix in some robber coverages and blitz a DB from the blindside.

On offense I"m looking to them to throw more to the RBs and Juice and try to expose the ravens LBs in coverage. Shanny's been doing a bunch of Garp throwing from empty sets which I haven't been a fan of.

As a Ravens fan this is what I just posted in the Lamar thread about how I’d defend him. Ravens LBs don’t do much pass coverage- Ravens play nickel ad their base package and more dime than 3-4. Someone is going to have to beat them enough on the ground to force them out of that.

Today’s game reminds me of the 1981 Bengals-49ers game that featured a couple of 10-3 teams and was one of the last times I remember a December matchup being such a clear potential Super Bowl preview.

I think this year’s New England D is a paper tiger - great scheme and disciplined players winning vs mediocre opponents. But these 49ers have a real chance to be an all time great D. They have the speed, physicality and intimidation of a great D.

I wish the weather were better today. Lamar wasn’t great in the rain at Seattle and the SF visit to DC in the rain was a miserable slog.

I give the Ravens a slight edge today. Their run attack matches up well w the one area where the SF D might not be as stout. And their pass D has been pretty extraordinary since Peters arrived and Jimmy Smith came back healthy, shutting down Wilson, Brady and Watson.

Hope it’s a great game with a February rematch in Miami

Great game and good call.

I like our chances in a rematch in Miami

In Baltimore with that weather, I’m pleasantly surprised it was such a good game. Next week is basically a must win for the division as far as I’m concerned, though.

GG Niners.  I think the weather hurt both teams about equally.  Lamar seemed more tentative than normal on runs.  And we haven't seen the Ravens get run on like that since like week 3.  Although the Ravens did seem to button that up largely in the 2nd half, just like the Niners contained Lamar.

Hopefully the teams meet again this season.

I wonder how the game would have turned out if Dee Ford was playing. His speed on the edge might have really helped. If we end up playing them again, Ford will be playing and we will find out

Yup. And I don’t believe the rain hurt Greg Roman’s offense as much as Kyle Shanahan’s offense for even a second.

The Ravens arent the bullies they want everyone to think they are. Theyre a really good team, no doubt, but todays game was gonna come down to who had the ball last, and the 49ers just ran out of time and kept shooting themselves in the foot. Gotta clean that up if they wanna make a deep playoff run.

The Ravens averaged 43 points per game the previous 4 weeks before the 49er game. We held them to just 20, and they only scored 6 points in the final 48 minutes.

Total yards: SF 331, BAL 283

Rush Yards: SF 174, BAL 178

Pass Yards: SF 157, BAL 105

Yards per play: SF 6.4, BAL 4.8

Yards per rush: SF 6.0, BAL 4.7

Penalties and clock management hurt us late in the game, and Im wondering why Shanahan doesnt call more screens to the RBs and FB. The passing play calls on 4th down are really frustrating. The first one we got lucky with a DPI call, and another was batted down. RUN THE DAMN BALL. You were averaging 6 YPC!!! :wall:

Also, Colemans running lately...sheesh...cant wait to get Breida back.

That play call on the last 4th down was terrible. RUN IT THERE!!
Yeah, didn’t get that play call. No problem with them passing the ball, but line up in a formation with a run/pass option.  Any type of play action would have had somebody open short. Jimmy has had a fair share of passes batted down this year and to try to thread the needle on 4th and 1 seemed risky when you only need a yard.

Good adjustments on defense by Salah in the 2nd half.  One short field TD (20 yards after the fumble) and the other kept alive on the roughing penalty against Al-Shaair. Can’t ask much more from the defense.

Like  the Seattle game, Jimmy’s fumble takes away the momentum. He has been really good for the most part, but has to protect the ball better. 10 picks and 9 fumbles (5 lost).  Not good.

Oh well, fun game overall.  On to the Saints. Would be nice if someone would miss a game winning kick against them. Last I can remember is Eddie Murray in the 1983 playoffs against the Lions.

I agree that it wasnt so much the play call as the formation. Shotgun told them it was a pass. Had he lined up under center and did a little play action going one way while a RB or Kittle went the other, it's an easy flip pass for the first down.

The team is gonna be staying and practicing an hour down the road from me in Bradenton this week...I wish they had a practice or pressers open to the public, I'd definitely go.

I think we bounce back and beat the Saints next week.  I figured we'd probably go 2-1 during the tough 3 game stretch, and that hasn't changed.

I’ve posted this before but it’s pretty maddening. He got away with a couple of throws too. He’s a pretty good quarterback that is going to make at least one potentially catastrophic mistake per game. I can’t remember watching anyone else with that degree of skill where I’m still 25% terrified every time he steps back to throw.

Yep.  Love the guy, but he scares the hell out of me sometimes.

Got to protect the ball better.

Sherman suffers knee sprain, Tartt fractures rib, D.J. Jones hurt again

On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sherman was among the many non-minor injuries the 49ers were dealt against the Ravens. Shanahan said Sherman suffered a right knee sprain, and strong safety Jaquiski Tartt, who was replaced by Marcell Harris (who had a forced fumble and recovery almost immediately against Lamar Jackson), suffered a fractured rib.

Both are considered day-to-day, along with D.J. Jones, who told KNBR two weeks ago he was focused on staying healthy, a sentiment later echoed by Shanahan. He had been dealing with a recurring groin injury, and suffered a sprained ankle and did not return on Sunday.

A surprise loss was Jullian Taylor, who has a “ligament issue with his elbow” and is expected to be out for at least “a couple weeks, maybe more.”

Shanahan was not asked whether Taylor and Jones’ injuries would require roster moves, but considering the fact that there are now just six currently healthy defensive linemen (Nick Bosa, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Solomon Thomas, Sheldon Day, Jeremiah Valoaga), it’s probably safe to assume a move will be made.

There are three internal options, with two much more likely than the third. The team has Kentavius Street on injured reserve, who told KNBR three weeks ago that he was healthy enough to return to practice should the team need him. Shanahan views him as an interior presence, and he can open his three-week practice window at any time before the end of the season, something that Shanahan said he would feel comfortable doing when/if the need arises.

More than likely, Street’s window is opened, and the 49ers will evaluate him in practice. The second option is Kevin Givens, a preseason standout on the interior, currently on the team’s practice squad. Depending on how serious Jones’ ankle sprain is, both could be activated on Sunday (which would necessitate either putting Taylor on injured reserve, and/or cutting a player or two, likely kicker Chase McLaughlin, and one of the 49ers’ four active tight ends).

The third and least likely internal option is practice squad defensive lineman Alex Barrett, who went to San Diego State University opposite offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill.

10-2 and can be the top seed if they win out, which they have an excellent chance to do.   If you listen to the national media, you would think the sky was falling.  Jesus Christ.

A little dinged on on the DL going into the Saints game.  Hopefully, Ford is healed up and ready to roll.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/12/04/top-things-were-learning-as-49ers-launch-practices-in-florida/amp/

BRADENTON, Fla.– As the 49ers began three consecutive days of practice here at IMG Academy’s sprawling campus, they didn’t look like a team down on their luck in the win column or injury department.

Instead, they looked lively, refreshed and happy to work Wednesday in the Florida sunshine and 67-degree weather.

The 49ers (10-2) hope this week’s stay gives them just the reboot needed for Sunday’s visit to the New Orleans Saints (10-2), and just the response needed after last Sunday’s 20-17 loss in rainy Baltimore.

Offensively, running back Matt Breida (ankle) and left tackle Joe Staley (finger) practiced and looked ready to return from their three-game absences.

Defensively, cornerback Richard Sherman (knee) and nose tackle D.J. Jones (ankle) looked surprisingly spry despite injuries last game, a two-game break appears a wise remedy for pass rusher Dee Ford (hamstring).

The only players not practicing were wide receiver Dante Pettis (right knee; ran on the side), defensive tackle Jullian Taylor (right elbow in a brace) and strong safety Jaquiski Tartt (ribs; not seen at practice, is day to say according to Shanahan).

STREET RESUMES PRACTICING

The 49ers activated the three-week practice window to evaluate defensive tackle Kentavius Street’s progress from multiple knee surgeries.

He’s yet to suit up since being drafted in the fourth round last year. He’s spent this season on injured reserve, and the 49ers have yet to use either of their short-term IR designations.

Judging from his early work in one-on-one drills, Street looks as powerful as ever, living up to the nickname “Baby Hulk” teammates assigned him last year.

SAFETY ADDITION

Safety Antone Exum re-signed to fill the roster spot that opened Tuesday upon kicker Chase McLaughlin’s release. Exum has been on and off the roster since 2017, including the first three games this season.

No idea where defense was today, but man, what an offense performance!!!

Jimmy BALLED OUT and Kittle = CLUTCH.

Wow, I'm spent from watching that back and forth.

Hope Richburg isn't out for the year but it doesn't look good.

How is Coleman not RB3 at this point, he's been terrible lately. 3 rushes for 6 yards today. Breida avgd 9yds/carry, and Mostert 6.9yds/carry. Giving it to Coleman on that 3rd and 1 was a head scratcher. Kyle always seems to out-clever himself once or twice a game. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I believe this was the first game where Deebo, Samders, and Kittle were all healthy (Kittles nagging issues aside, he doesn't play like he's hurt), and man the offense looks pretty good. Even Bourne made plays today.

Al Shaair and Harris just aren't ready. They both looked bad at times. I hope Tartt isn't out long.

Also...We should rest Dee Ford til week 17.

Huge win that showed the offense could go get a game for them if necessary. 2-1 on this three game stretch was incredible.  On the other side, that defense looked nothing like the unit we saw in the first 12 games. Also with the Falcons and Rams looking competent, they’ll have to keep the pedal down all the way through the end of the year to have a shot at the division.

Great game from a fan standpoint.  Where was the Niner defense?  Saints fans asking the same thing about their D but sheesh, they tackled like a youth football team today.

Jimmy was outstanding today. The one pick wasn’t on him. No meathead throws, which was good to see.  Having Sanders, Deebo and Kittle healthy is huge.  Agree with your other post that Coleman is the odd man out. Just doesn’t see the holes like Mostert and Breida do. Coming into the season, Mostert was the “special teams” guy. Really nice skill set and he seems to have fixed his fumbling issue.

Fingers crossed on Richburg. Losing him for the season would hurt.

How the F did the officials miss the false start on the 2nd Cook TD?  Good god. #62 was out of his stance WAY before the snap. Horrible.

A few early Monday tidbits:

Jimmy Garoppolo was 8-9, 183 yards, 3 TD on throws of 10+ yards downfield yesterday. A perfect passer rating of 158.3.

Jimmy vs. blitz vs Saints: 17-22, 226 yards, 10.3 ypa, 3 TD, 1 sack

Jimmy leads the league in TD passes since week 8 with 18.

The Niners improved to 11-2 on the season, marking their best start through 13 games since 1997 (11-2).

The 49ers offense finished the game with 516 total net yds. of offense (162 rushing & 354 passing). The 49ers have gained over 500 total net yds. in 2 games this season (571 at Cin. (9/15/19). The last time the 49ers had at least 2 games in a season with at least 500 total net yds. of offense was the 1999 season [542 at Cin. (12/5/99) & 506 at Atl. (1/3/00)].

San Francisco’s 5 passing TDs on the day were the most by the 49ers in a single game since 10/14/90 at Atl. (Montana threw 6 tds, Rice caught 5 of them)

With the TD pass,  E. Sanders became the first 49ers non-QB throw a TD pass since K David Akers threw a 14-yd TD pass at StL (1/1/12) and the first WR since WR Jerry Rice threw a 41-yd. TD pass at Atl. (12/24/95)

Buckner’s 4 fumble recoveries are a single-season career high. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became the first member of the 49ers to register 4-or-more fumble recoveries in a single season since CB Ronnie Lott registered 4 in 1988.

The 49ers defense has now registered at least 1 fumble recovery in 5-consecutive games, marking the longest streak of games with 1+ since Weeks 6-11 (Week 9 Bye) of 2013.

49ers running to the right side, last two weeks…. (PFF)

at Ravens: 11.1 yards per carry
At Saints: 9.3 yards per carry

Most targets this season without a drop (Pro Football Reference)

Larry Fitzgerald (90)
Austin Ekeler (84)
James White (83)
Emmanuel Sanders (83)
Danny Amendola (77)
George Kittle (75)
Austin Hooper (73)

Sherman could miss multiple weeks with a hamstring Grade 2 hamstring strain

We’ll have the Richburg news this afternoon

It wouldn’t be a San Francisco 49ers win if there wasn’t any bad news. Unfortunately, that’s been a consistent theme this season. It feels like it’s impossible to have a clean game. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, cornerback Richard Sherman underwent an MRI Monday morning on his injured hamstring, which is pretty sore a day after that wild win over the Saints. His status is in doubt for Sunday against the Falcons, but he’ll do everything he can to be ready.

Sherman’s MRI showed a Grade 2 hamstring strain, per Pelissero. So definitely tough for this week and perhaps beyond, though we’ve seen Sherman play through plenty of things before.

Kyle Shanahan is set to speak to the media Monday at 2 p.m. PT, where he’ll have injury updates. The Niners got hit pretty hard against the Saints. Weston Richburg was carted off the field with a knee injury. It sounds like bad news there. Dee Ford played four snaps before aggravating his hamstring injury. K’Waun Williams left the game with a concussion.

Grade 2 hamstring strains are partial muscle tears — important to let those heal to avoid complete Grade 3 tear… complete recovery can take 4+ weeks. So, 49ers’ likely formula:

- Earn first-round bye
- Let Sherman/Ford rest
- Attack playoffs at home with healthy, rested defense

I really hope the game @ Seattle is not a must win game for us. Win the next two games and hope Seattle loses to either Carolina or Cardinals, that would give us the division and the first round bye since we hold the tie-breaker over packers and saints.

Kept wishing we had a kicker that could boom the ball through the endzone rather than let that little twit keep coming up with huge chunk yardage plays on the kickoffs.

PFF grades and snap counts from the 49ers win over the Saints

Heck of a day for the offense. Defense? Not so much

PFF GRADES

OFFENSE

Shanahan wasn’t too confident in Richburg returning this season. Garland filled in and did a nice job. No penalties or back-breaking sacks like we saw in the Seattle game. Being able to practice with the starters should help him out, but there’s no replacing Richburg, who has been the best offensive lineman this season, in my opinion.

One of the questions heading into the game was how the touches and snaps would be divided among the running backs. We have our answer:

Mostert: 38 snaps, 12 touches

Breida: 12 snaps, 7 touches

Coleman: 10 snaps, 3 touches

I won’t say that Coleman is completely phased out, but it appears that Shanahan is rolling with the guys that are producing, which seems like common sense, but it’s a struggle for a lot of coaches to do.

Top-five offensive grades

Sanders 84.0

Kittle 83.6

Breida 81.9

Garoppolo 81.6

Mostert 74.9

Sanders had 157 yards on nine receptions, had the long 75-yard touchdown, and was a critical factor on the opening drive as he helped set the tone for the 49ers offense. More than that, Sanders avoided two tackles but also helped spring Mostert on a couple of runs. Sanders was a complete player on Sunday afternoon.

There’s nothing left to say about Kittle that we already haven’t. He’s a superstar.

Breida didn’t play much but made his presence felt. Back from injury, Breida had 54 yards on six carries Two runs over ten yards, and 15 of those yards were after contact. If Mostert is the “bell cow” back, this might prove “less is more” with Breida. His speed never ceases to amaze me. Mostert only had ten carries, but he 69 yards and three runs over ten yards. Mostert’s patience is perfect for this blocking scheme, and his acceleration helps him fly past defenders.

Welcome back to this side, Jimmy. Garoppolo was 8-9, 183 yards, for three touchdowns on throws of 10+ yards downfield yesterday. He had a perfect passer rating of 158.3. You will read some analysts this week saying that Garoppolo didn’t do any heavy lifting. They are wrong. Garoppolo was great. He usually is when he’s decisive. On Tuesday I’ll have a “five throws” article on Jimmy. He was impressive.

Bottom-five offensive grades

Samuel 56.7

Staley 55.9

McGlinchey 54.5

Tomlinson 53.1

Richburg 47.2

Samuel had a run-blocking grade of 28.7, so that hurt him. He also had a drop, which is why he’s listed here. He also had a penalty.

It’s never a good look when four of your five starting offensive linemen are the worst-graded players in the game. That’s another kudos to Shanahan, who got the ball out quick and relied on his skill players. Each of the linemen listed had a below-average run-blocking grade. It was the penalties that hurt. Staley and McGlinchey each had a false start. McGlinchey also gave up a sack. PFF gave Tomlinson’s sack to Jimmy, which I agree with

DEFENSE

Watching this one live, it felt like Bosa, Jones, and a few splash plays by Armstead and Buckner. Aside from that, there weren’t too many standout performances from memory. Al-Shaair only playing nine snaps was probably due to his play as much as it was New Orleans personnel.

Top five defensive performances

Bosa 83.6

Sherman 76.2

Day 74.8

Jones 74.5

Armstead 73.4

Bosa is relentless. You can’t help but appreciate his effort. It helps that he’s really freaking good at football, but he’s also fun to watch as Bosa gives it his all every play. Bosa had four pressures on the day.

Sherman allowed four receptions but only for 33 yards. He broke up a pass and continued his aggressive play in the running game. Sherman had seven tackles on the afternoon.

Jones turned the game around with the forced fumble. He’s been the unsung hero on the defense all season. He had two stops on the day, as did Armstead, who also had four hurries.

Bottom-five defensive performances

Witherspoon 63.4

Harris 52.4

Greenlaw 51.8

Warner 48.6

Moseley 46.0

Witherspoon gave up a touchdown to arguably the best receiver in football and was also flagged for a penalty, but it was his tackling that did him in. Witherspoon missed three tackles on the day. As a team, San Francisco missed 16, per PFF. It’s tough to imagine them repeating this performance.

Warner missed three tackles, while Harris missed four. My biggest knock on Robert Saleh this game was assuming Harris would be able to repeat his performance from the Ravens game against a completely different offense in the Saints. Harris played well, but he was near the line of scrimmage against Baltimore. He was further down the field against New Orleans, and we saw Harris’ limitations.

Moseley will return to the lineup with Sherman missing time. He gave up a 25-yard catch, and also missed a tackle.
