Official 2022 college football thread: its conference realignment season. (1 Viewer)

This transfer portal thing might be the dumbest thing ever invented.

Not for the players.
For 40% it is disastrous.

"Disastrous" may be hyperbole. I'm sure many of these kids don't find a scholarship to sit on the bench to be THAT life alteringly amazing that they're not willing to risk it to get a chance to show themselves and make it to the league.

Heck, two of the recent #1 overall draft picks could have just faded off into obscurity as college backups with a sports management scholarship without a transfer.

Maybe to you. 40% of kids who make the decision to transfer give up a full ride at a 4 year (or 5, or 6) university and don't get that same deal at another school as a result. So I would expect the vast majority of those kids either a) complete their degree on their own dime and as a result graduate or leave school with a lot of debt or b) don't complete their degree. To me that is a disastrous transaction, as I actually assume a lot of these young athletes want an education. Call my Pollyanna.

I spent 4 years working with college football/hoops players every day. A lot fewer of these guys care about their sports management degree than you think.

I just don't think most of these guys see a free ride for a useless degree they were pushed into while being also pushed to spend the majority of their time away from academics (beyond just making grades good enough to stay on the team) to be nearly the life advantage you're implying.

But we don't really have to speculate, because if they DID consider it a disaster then they wouldn't keep entering the transfer portal. But they continue to do so, knowing full well that they could be giving up their free scooter in exchange for going for it and trying to make a career out of football. It's obviously a modest enough level of importance that they're willing to risk it because they continue to go to the transfer portal. It's not like entries have fallen off the cliff since that data came out.

Fair enough. My viewpoint would be they either don't know the data (I certainly didn't till I looked it up, not like it's being advertised by CFB/NCAA) or if they do they of course think it won't be them left high and dry. And 40% of them are wrong - or at least were in that two year sample.

I'll take at face value your experience and I believe what you observed, but I think the truth may be in the middle of our opinions. It would be interesting to hear from players who entered the portal and regretted it, and from players who entered it and from the outside seemingly were worse off but were happy they gave it a shot.

Army and Navy uniforms are 🔥 but the game is kinda dull. 7-3 Army at the half.
I’m sorry but it’s terrible every year. GB these young men but it ain’t good football.

Thought I’d kill a few minutes & def regretted my decision lol

I’m a vet & IDC, guess if you went to an academy it’s a big deal

it’s fascinating from a train wreck perspective - it’s like watching JV quarterbacks trying to complete a pass

whew here we go 37 yarder to tie with 2 minutes left

10-10 prolly won’t se another score

  1. If this thing goes to college O.T. we could see the worst bad beat in history. Under 32.5 is locked if someone just scores in regulation. Otherwise, you never know.

Sounds like a typical enlisted man....... :P

Word is “he needs a miracle” at this point if the above isn’t yet true. Really sad and sudden.
Local radio and message boards seem to think the worst at this point. Pretty reliable sources say 2 of his 4 kids have gotten here. The other 2 should be here soon. Sounds like they are just waiting on them.

Sad situation. He was already a local Starkville legend. He's attend fantasy football drafts and what not around town. He was at a Christmas party for the local Miss State media just Saturday night.

Ross Dellenger of SI tweeted that Mike Leach’s health situation is “critical” and to keep him and his family in thoughts.

Seeing rumors on Twitter of heart attack.
Dude is a legend. Someone on twitter recommended S.C. Gwynne's book "The Perfect Pass". It supposedly shows how much he's impacted the game.

Clarion Ledger story

Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach had a massive heart attack on Sunday in Starkville and was transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he is still being cared for on Monday.

According to multiple sources, Leach, 61, collapsed at his home in Starkville, but did not receive medical attention for between 10 to 15 minutes. EMTs used a defibrillator machine and delivered multiple shocks to restore normal heart rhythm.

After he was stabilized at Oktibbeha County Hospital, he was transported by helicopter to UMMC.

Sources said two of four his children are already in Jackson with the other two en route.

It appears, according to sources, that Leach may have suffered seizures with the possibility of brain damage. Sources said the situation is dire.

Damn it. I think Mike Leach is a gift to the sporting world; a refreshing, colorful personality in a sea awash in banality. From quoting Mr. Hand to encouraging young lovers to elope and save money, the man provided sound byte after sound byte of treasured material that I go back and re-listen to quite often. The man had a pet racoon growing up. He is an expert in pirate history. He has a bar seat with his name on it at Captain Tony's in Key West. Think I'll buy his book "Swing your Sword" today. Hoping he pulls through but this sounds really bad. :(

Yeah seeing rumors he's brain dead and they're just keeping him alive until his family is all there. Sucks.

His appearances on John Canzano's radio show in Portland (I can't sit through the whole thing ever, but the interviews are released as individual podcasts) were gold the last several years. He'd usually be walking around the Palouse (and later Starkville) saying hi to people, running out of breath as he hit a hill, and rambling on about pretty much anything but football.

Canzano sounds like my grandmother. That voice is shrill but yeah, he had great interviews with Leach. So did the guys on 1080 (Isaac and Big Suke) when they'd meet with him for Pac-12 Media Day.

The Athletic has done a lot of great features on Leach. This one from June 2022 with a fantastic final line....

Kyle Sweet likes to razz people, too. During the first practice of the first week of Washington State preseason camp in the summer of 2015, he decided the way to make Leach remember him was to play ball. Not football, but Leach ball. Leach knew that Sweet was from Orange County in California, so while the wide receivers went through an easy-ups drill — a standard laidback warm-up passing drill for quarterbacks and receivers — he trudged by Sweet and asked him if he was a fan of a hit reality TV show.

The show? “The Real Housewives of Orange County.”

“I go, ‘Yeah, one of those women is my aunt,’” Sweet recounted. “He stopped dead in his tracks and said, ‘No ****, are you serious?!’”

Sweet pump-faked his head coach for a long time.

“I just kept it going,” Sweet said. “Until this day, I think he believes it. I thought I might as well start it off on a good note.”

Sweet, whose only other D-I offer before Wazzu was from Hawaii, went on to be a four-year contributor with the Cougars. He had heard stories of the unpredictable nature of Leach before arriving …

“But until you get there and really see it with your own eyes, you’ll never know the true Mike Leach,” Sweet said. “The guy has had a cough since 2002.”

:lmao:

For those of you in bowl pools or just like to bet it seems like every year there are a couple "bet against" teams that look great on paper but don't always show up. Usually a big time program that just missed out on the playoffs. Bonus is they are also the most likely to have bowl no-shows in terms of players that don't want to hurt their future earnings in the NFL.

I like the Kansas State Wildcats vs. Alabama. Getting their tenth win against such an esteemed program means a lot more to them than a group more interested in their current NFL draft stock.

Kansas State +3.5

As somebody who has had a widow maker I think I can say this - he’s always looked to me like a heart attack waiting to happen. Best wishes for a recovery and a 2nd chance, Mike

Glad you're living that 2nd chance. Terrifying stuff. How soon did you receive medical attention? Leach went 10-15 minute which is a long long time to wait for help.

Know a few that had younger widowmakers. It's really a matter of being at the hospital when it happens or you are gone. So sad, changed the game more than nearly any coach.

My wife drove me immediately to the hospital (not recommended). 3 minutes from my house. They ushered me in immediately. Time is tissue, and speed definitely contributed to a good outcome, considering.

I’m curious, honest moment by the committee, if they feel TCU is really 3 or if they were avoiding the rematch with tOSU and Michigan.
They have said in previous years they prefer to avoid rematches if everything is even. I think TCU was a few shades ahead of OSU though.
Agreed. Found it funny they were really trying to get the chair to admit to it there but he wouldn’t budge.

I think it becomes more accentuated when we get to 12 teams. Some southern team is eventually going to have to go play in the snow at Penn State, UM, tOSU, ND, or others. I fully expect to see the questionable dance of the committee trying to absolve said team from that travel in favor of sending in a northern team.
ND will never get a bye as long as they are independent, so they do stand to benefit. I love it as long as I’m watching it on TV and not at the game.
