***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Yeah I’m kinda fine if CP doesn’t play again until the WC.

Might be interesting to see what Potter does with him tomorrow. Raheem Sterling has been so poor these bad couple weeks I think most Chelsea watchers would rather give him a run in a meaningless game against Zagreb tomorrow and save Pulisic for Arsenal on Sunday.

Son with a pretty serious eye injury yesterday. No official reports, but speculation of an orbital bone fracture. Don't know if a mask would allow him to play for South Korea at the WC or not. Time will tell.

As I have South Korea in our world cup sweepstakes, if he doesn't get on the plane it at least increases my worst team prize equity I guess

Man, hope he gets to play. Guy is a joy to watch.

More news just came out that Son is having surgery to repair a fracture around his eye. Link.

The Tottenham statement said: “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye.

They are dropping like flies :(

RB Leipzig confirm that Timo Werner will be out for the rest of 2022 after suffering an ankle injury against Shakhtar Donetsk. Another player missing the mid-season World Cup

who are we rooting for?

Most fans here are US fans. After that, it is spread out a bit. There is no one over riding rooting interest in the FFA.

A better question may be who are people rooting against :)

* Mexico is #1 on my list. I am finally no longer burdened with worrying about WC qualifying slots and having to hope Concacaf teams do well. With that out of the picture now, Mexico falling flat on their faces would be fine :)

* England would be number 2. And this has nothing to do with the players, most of which I like. It is entirely based on the worst fan base in the entire world. (note that I acknowledge that the US fan base is probably close to the second worst)

Rooting against:

1) Whoever England are playing

2) Whoever Argentina are playing. If we can't win it, and with our comedy defence that's a certainty, I at least want the GOAT to win the big one before he retires

3) Most of the rest of UEFA, who are either mediocre teams who'll clog up knockout stage spots with zero win equity, which could be used by more interesting teams from non UEFA confederations, while the contenders have a bunch of unlikable players

I'm torn on who to root for beyond the USMNT.

Want to hate on other CONCACAF teams, but also wouldn't mind if they all make a good showing.

Otherwise, I will cheer on key players, like Son , Messi, etc.

I will be pulling for Canada for sure, grew to really like their team during qualifying. I would like to see Senegal or Cameroon do some damage as well. In terms of the contenders I want Messi to win one.

I will be pulling hard for Ecuador. Used to live there and love the people - there will definitely be three holidays coming up. They're completely nutso about this. And, let's face it, they landed in the best possible spot to try and sneak in the second round. They should beat Qatar, which means if they can get by Senegal they have a ticket.

I'm having a really hard time getting hyped for this World Cup. Which is weird because it will probably be the easiest one for me to watch in a while because I'm taking a break from working right now. Part of it is that I'm not very sanguine about the USMNT's chances of success. And because I don't really think the problem is Gregg (who I don't think is Pep or anything but seems perfectly acceptable to me) has me dreading the discourse. I just don't think this is "the most talented USMNT in recent memory." I think there are some very talented pieces, but any team with glaring holes at ST, CB, and GK is going to be iffy.

And among the other teams, only an epic Messi GOAT-making tournament really seems like an exciting narrative to me. Throw in my distaste for the way Qatar got the tournament and prepared for it (and in fairness, I don't know why I'm having such a strong reaction when I enjoyed Russia 2018 despite the same stuff), and I'm just surprisingly dead inside.

When I look at our team I just remember that they are the youngest team in the WC by a lot. I'm hopeful, but don't have my heart set on a deep run.

Not just the youngest team in the WC. The youngest team in the entire history of the WC. This is nothing but a fancy dress rehearsal for WC2026 as the team is an entire cycle too young to have any real success.

The longer we last the better for the future but I am setting my bar at simply still being alive to advance come the Iran game (which means likely at least a draw against Wales and England winning out).

I am going to fully enjoy the WC but I am already vetting new coaches and planning for the extra short cycle for 2026 :)

I think the US is going to get rolled as well. Low expectations are the key to happiness in life

I could see almost anything from an 0-3 to a second round birth via 4 points.
Color me greedy, but after the scars left from the last Iran game I really, really want to win at least that one. I can stomach losing to Bale and the ridiculous amount of talent on the England squad.

That Iran game was the nadir of the USMNT.

That is actually a good question many fans would point to Wet and Bumpy as the nadir but the 98 Iran game felt really bad because it almost took MLS with it which would have killed us for the future.

Define rolled. Wales are just Bale and a bunch of guys and I can't think Iran will put up a great deal of resistance. Win those games and then hold against us, then it only needs the regular England group stage mess up to play probably Senegal/Ecuador in the last sixteen. Heck, I don't think the Netherlands are that great right now.

Personally I'm thinking:

Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador, Qatar (barring riggage)
England, USA, Wales, Iran
Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Saudi Arabia
France, Denmark, Tunisia, Australia
Spain, Germany, Japan, Costa Rica
Belgium, Croatia, Canada, Morocco
Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia, Cameroon
Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana, South Korea

Netherlands > USA
Argentina > Denmark
Spain > Croatia
Brazil > Uruguay
England > Senegal
France > Mexico
Belgium > Germany
Portugal > Switzerland

Argentina > Netherlands
Brazil > Spain
France > England
Belgium > Portugal

Brazil > Argentina
France > Belgium

France > Brazil

Wet and bumpy? I don't know that reference. For me, at least, that Iran game was the worst. And, maybe I'm weird, but this is the best.

Wet and Bumpy was the bad weather night in Trinidad when they failed to qualify for 2018

I'm personally having a hard time getting fired up. It's the least excited I've been about the WC since probably 1990. No Super Eagles this time around and the USMNT brings more sadness than joy.

Hopefully this will change once the games get going although I don't expect the atmosphere will lift up the tournament.

Well said IMO. And we are so so young.

Qatar (the country) getting shown up and humiliated would be fine with me as well. Like if the whole tournament was Fyre Festival II in the desert.

Pulling for USMNT obviously.

Pulling hard against Qatar (obviously) and ENG, GER, BRA. While I want to like CAN, I kinda want to see them get stomped after what they did in qualifying.

I'll pull for DEN, FRA, CRO, and ESP from UEFA. I like Cameroon from AFC, Uruguay from CONMEBOL, and I'll pull for Mexico as I appreciate the passion for el tri. I'll pull for Japan or Korea against any of the others except maybe Ecuador.

Massive Cameroon fan. How can you not like the Indomitable Lions? Most importantly - is Milla playing?

Rooting against Mexico used to be fun, but now it's like rooting against the Detroit Lions.

Why are "we" the second worst fanbase? I'd immediately rank us above any fanbase that tosses urine bags, puts people in the hospital, or throws batteries at Santa.

I think Senegal is head and shoulders above any of the other African teams in the tournament. Of course, Mane will have all the pressure that Salah had on him in 2018, but he has a better team around him. A sem-final run for them might rival the Messi coronation as a great story.

I posted story lines that would make me happy to some friends, and this was one of them. If you read about what he's done for his home village, he's easy to root for.
  • Messi gets a ring
  • Fyre Festival II, Desert Bugaloo
  • US exceeds my expectations and gets out of the group
  • A true outsider makes a run (Wales, Canada, CR, Japan, etc)
  • Mane leads Senegal deep

[Canada Soccer] We wish Maxime Crépeau the best in his recovery after he suffered a broken leg in the MLS Cup Final, an injury that will keep him out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

I don't want a semi final run, I want Ndiaye returned to us after the tournament in one piece

I really want Messi to win this even though I am not an Argentina fan in general.

Beyond that, apart from the USMNT, I’d like Canada to have a good run though it seems unlikely. Kind of bummed Wales Is in our group, though now I despise Gareth Bale haha.

Agree with those who are having trouble getting hyped for this tournament. November is just weird timing. The Qatar thing doesn’t help. Plus ironically, I’m just coming off a long (and in the end, devastating) MLS season so I’m kind of burned out on soccer for the moment. Is this what European fans feel like for regular world cups?

Rooting for:

USA

Croatia and Belgium--love good midfield play and they have Modric and DeBruyne, respectively. And I'm willing to consider other teams with strong midfield play.

Senegal and Cameroon--several people I work with are from Cameroon and one is from Senegal, giving me people at work to about the tournament

Rooting against:

Mexico--I believe rumors of their demise are premature. And I want something bad to happen to Raul on the pitch.

England--Harry Kane to be precise. And I'm looking forward to breaking out my Brian Clough avatar again when they lose.

All the CONMEBOL teams--Don't care about Messi winning a WC to cement his legacy, and I just don't like their collective smugness.

On the fence:

Canada--big fan of Davies but they were pretty dooshey during qualifying.
Portugal--Not a CR7 guy per se but I don't mind when he wins

@MenInBlazers

EA Sports simmed this year's World Cup in FIFA 23 and have Argentina hoisting the Cup

They also have Pulisic finishing 4th in scoring with 5 goals in 5 games (US out in the quarters).

Crazy part is this method accurately predicted the winners in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
