Could this injury open up a window for Ecuador or (gulp) Qatar to advance?
Of course it does. Senegal's odds at advancement definitely go down without him in on the pitch. Those odds are inversely proportional to the odds of the others in the group to advance. One would think that Senegal still has more talent than Qatar, but Ecuador could be the surprise beneficiary here. Abdou Diallo and Kalidou Koulibaly are better than anything Qatar can throw at them IMO. But who will score the goals?

I feel responsible in a very small way.

Will be fascinating to see what happens and how many get jail time.
No worries - in the executive boxes they'll still have beer, spirits, and sommelier catered wines for the rich and FIFA members.

How many times have we said this about Italy in group play and they always seemed to squeak into the next round?

I am still processing that it has been 8.5 years since I have seen the US play in a WC. I can't imagine what it will be like for Italian fans if when they qualify for 2026....

I approve of the shade throwing at @gianmarco

Personally, not sure why the beer stuff is such a big angle.

Well, in the same way that soccer is huge everywhere, drinking is even more huge and I’m sure they claimed they allowed it as part of the negotiations.

Having said that - it actually may reduce the number of fan incidents so it could be a net positive but it will suck for the average fan who wants to go to Qatar and enjoy themselves.

Yeah, until they cut you off at 4 beers, which was the max anyway. Of course, to enjoy yourself you were always going to have to willfully ignore the black clad morality police just wandering aimlessly through the crowd looking for who knows what.

I am 100% Italian so I was really referring to myself above.

Yeah. I like beer too. Alcohol sales were banned at Champions League for years and you can only drink on the concourse in England. It's annoying, just isn't in my top things bad about the Qatar World Cup list.

Still got feel bad for our supporters in Qatar who have to watch the USMNT sober.

I have a few spots left in a random teams World Cup pool. It’s a private Facebook group.

16 people. $25. Gets two random teams. Top 3 payout. $250, $100, $50

DM if interested.

It's weird that I remember so little of the Slovenia game. I had Donovan's roof rocket, but Bradley's dink and our goal ruled out for offside? Nope.

I remember Bradley's lackadaisical defending on their first goal. It was infuriating how often that squad gave up uncontested shots from around the top of the 18.

It was not called offside. It was ruled that Edu supposedly pushed off. That is a goal that absolutely would have stood if there was VAR. The replays show that it was Edu that was being held and that he did not push off. The ref just bottled it.

All you Panini-heads out there: Stickers and books are a coming. Get to know the differences between the USA/Europe version and the Latin American version: https://twitter.com/AlejoAriasA/status/1564067453117808646
Whats the best way to pick some of these up? Sealed boxes on Ebay?
I have box coming tomorrow, loading up the book with my son tonight from random packs. Got a blue Neymar, but nothing super rare yet. I'll be down for trades by next weekend. Who else is doing a book?

For a second there, I thought you had been holding out on us all these years.

Both my kids have a book. We bought them in Colombia so they are the south American edition. I think there are fewer rare cards in those. The stickers have no border and the background is orange. There are only 638 stickers to collect instead of 670 in the blue edition.

It's a **** move, mostly. For those who follow this stuff, though, it really cements how corrupt FIFA is.
No dog in the fight, but IDK who is more corrupt - FIFA or the Olympic committee. It doesn’t surprise me that Qatar did this.

My favorite quote is from the head of FIFA saying that this will pull them and Budweiser closer together. IDC if they have it or not, it’s just how these countries and FIFA do business. No way Budweiser pays this kind of money if there wasn’t assurances that it could be sold.

After Germany, Holland, England, Denmark and Wales all told FIFA they were going to ignore the rules and have their captains wear One Love rainbow arm bands and pay what ever fines FIFA levies, FIFA has changed course and created their own captain arm bands that will have different slogans on them based on what round of the tournament they are in.

While we wait a painstaking additional 24 hours I made a couple updates to the drinking guide. There's a map and a full list of drinks page (still tweaking the full list view)

You should be able to navigate to this with the buttons at the bottom. Recommend viewing this on a large monitor and go to bottom right and do full screen. I can't seem to get the formatting to ever work perfectly on here.

Sucks where this is being held and all the abuse surrounding it, but still dialed in and excited to watch. Hoping Messi wins it if the US doesn’t ( :lmao: ) and just want to see some entertaining games.

My wife and I have already decided to take a road trip up the west coast slate of games in 2026 — ready to start planning that asap.

This is still my favorite FIFA clip of all time. Never has a joke been more true

==============

I can't believe I've never seen that. It's perfect.
i didn't want to go to qatar before. even less so now. this is working out well for them.
The thing is that this WC has soured me on tourism for the whole region. I would have considered a trip to Dubai previously, now i don't want to go there.
My friend went to Dubai a few weeks ago and said it was amazing but I don’t know. Seems like a lot of walking on eggshells to see a place. I doubt I ever go.
My wife has been for a conference but didn't spend much time there. She has transited through like 10 times when flying on Emirates though. She speaks highly of the airline and the airport.

Nonetheless, I say screw them and their dirty oil money. #nopolitcs #noban
We went 20 years ago. Even then it was super American...TGIFs, Starbucks and tons of bars/clubs. It's a party there and it's not a secret. We also have a lot of gay friends who go for work and pleasure...not like Pakistan where they have to hide it (travelling for work)...or at least hide it as much.

looks like Messi picked up a calf injury in the friendly. He did not train with the team today and just worked out lightly on his own. No word on if semi serious or just precautionary.

Not a huge soccer fan but love almost any big sporting event like World Cup.

So to get this Qatar had to bribe many of the folks who run FIFA, right? Are those people still on the FIFA payroll?

The two biggest names of Platini and Blatter are long gone. We will never know how many smaller nations were bribed to get their votes so we can't say who is still involved and who isn't.

Netflix has a documentary on this corruption that is pretty amazing.
