Group B Scenarios...

England advance with win or tie
Or loss by 3 or less goals
Or loss by 4 or 5 goals and Iran/USA tie
Or loss by 6 goals and Iran/USA tie and Iran doesn't outscore them by 3 goals.
They are for sure eliminated if they lose by 7 goals.

Iran advance with win
Or tie and Wales Tie/Loss
Iran is out with a loss

USA advance with win
USA is out with a tie or loss

Wales advance with a win by 4+ goals
Or with a win and an Iran/USA tie
Wales is out with a tie or loss

A draw at least takes out the freak Wales knocks us out scenario.

If Wales falls behind though Iran is going to totally bunker down and park the bus.

Dare I ask who the ref is gonna be for US/IRN?

Iran is built to defend deep and counter with quality. that's not going to change regardless... but just needing a tie to advance? it's going to be parking brake enacted before kickoff.
eta.. point being, they won't care about Wales score unless it's seriuosly topsy turvy

They will surely scoreboard watch but will play slightly more straight early on before there is any goals in England/Wales. Time or and England will open the bus depot.

So exactly the same scenario as 2010...

US draws first game (Slovenia/Wales), draws England in the second game, has to win vs worst team in the group in the third game to advance (Algeria, Iran). My heart is 12 years older than it was then though, so maybe we don't save it for the 92nd minute?

Wow. Good game there for the US. We belonged on that field and we’re definitely the more likely to score for most of it.

Don’t know why we can’t get on a header in the box, but corner service was actually pretty good. If we had a Harry Kane type we’d have scored 3 today.

A lot has been said about MaGuire lately, but he was England’s best player today IMO. He controlled the air today.

Leeds is gonna get a ton of offers for Adam’s this summer. He was a stud at DM again.

If Chelsea doesn’t start playing Pulisic, they’re stupid. He looked better than any of England’s $500M attackers today.

Win against Iran and we’re through. LFG!!

woof... that "highlihgt" reel of Zimm mis-passes... not pretty. no wonder they were high pressing him and not Ream.

Yeah - he was shaky at times. I think we knew CB was our weakness. If he cost us a draw today that would have crushed him and us.
he and ream look so much alike to my tired eyes on my crappy tv screen, I lost track of who was making those passes. seeing them all lined up like that... yikes.
I mean- the guy has been the lynchpin of the US defense for a while, so he's not going anywhere.

Great game by the US. Still think GGG waits too long for subs but overall the US were the better team most of the game.

Would love to figure out how to play Reyna up top instead of Wright or Sargent. Just feels like we get nothing out of them.

They’ve stayed Ream on left and Zimm on right. Honestly, Zimm wasn’t horrible - couple of aggressive passes that didn’t come off but that late giveaway almost cost us. If he didn’t give away the stupid penalty we would have 2 clean sheets and saying the pairing has been stellar.

What still seems so odd to me is nobody would say US Defense > US offense but here we sit with one goal after two matches. That will be GGG’s legacy if we don’t advance (unfortunately).

If we can’t beat either Wales or Iran then we simply don’t deserve to move on. I’m encouraged for the future of US soccer given how young this team is and from what I’ve seen this WC. They have outplayed their opponents for 3/4 halfs. I’m totally cool with our fate requiring us to win vs Iran

seriously. those are the words every team the US has EVER gotten a result against since 1990 has used. so little respect for the actual game the US just played- contolling the MF, making plays all over the field... makes me sick, tbh.
They just don’t want to give the right credit. Pulisic was the most technical player on the field today from either side. The US had the better attacking plays and shape. England’s $400M midfield got outplayed by MMA. England’s only real chances came on US errors. Don’t know why they can’t recognize that.

Southgate... athleticism and organisation.

I feel like you guys are reading a little in to the comments - I don’t think Kane or Southgate were giving a backhand compliments. I think they genuinely think we are a good side.
I think it's just me rsponding this way (havne't seen Andy's comments yet).

and I"m not reading into anything... it's literally what every coach and player the US dispatches says. they don't say- "they controlled the MF and made the plays up and down the field, holding their shape and controlling the tempo most of the game."

I'm telling you- "athleticism and organisation" are buzz-words for "they're not that good and certainly worse than us, but they got a result because they ran a lot". it's been 30+ years of the EXACT same comments over and over again. and tbh... they held up in the 90s when it was a bunch of college kids just running around. but to say those exact words after that performance is a big FU.

55/45 possession for England. Considering the gulf in talent on the teams, that's pretty remarkable. This wasn't a US side that bunkered and countered at all. They had sustained pressure at times. Even in our best "athletic and grind" days, that was never the case.

and look- Kane said they struggled today. not that the US made them struggled. he sees it that England dropped it against a lesser team because they didn't play as well as they're capable. there's no credit to the US. no acknowledgement of the US ability when you use "athletic and organized".

southgate said they were coming down off the high of their first game- and hard to keep that going. not that the US had a factor in it... other than being "athletic and organized".

You really expect the manager of England to come out and say the side they played controlled the midfield and tempo? Really?

I’ll take your word for it but I also watched a long interview with Southgate during one of the other games where he praised GGG and the US side. I think he’s being genuine  now Kane may be taking the piss.

Wales game was underwhelming given our superior talent. That’s on GGG.

England game exceeded expectations, have to give credit to GGG there as well despite the Shaq Moore catastrophe.

I give Berhalter a C+ grade. Can rise to a B- with a result Vs Iran. A loss should be the end of the nepotism experiment.

there's a reason they both used the exact same words every coach and player the US has gotten a result against have used going back 30 years. regardless of any niceties said in a pre-tourney interview... they have zero respect for the US game. **** them.

Totally agree. They're too arrogant to admit we outplayed them. Their egos tell them that they just got unlucky and we just hung around by being scrappy.

We were the better team. We didn't bunker. We didn't time waste. We went toe to toe and outplayed them. Just couldn't put one in the net.

Yup, hence my comments half way through about being more technical. It was obvious in this game

Also that stretch of gaining corners was evidence for the US outplaying them in their half.

The English fans should be pissed at their weak sauce midfield and impotent offense. When Mcguire is your best player, you're in trouble.

Saka and Sterling looked like dog crap in generating offense, always a step slower than Jedi and Adams.

Other countries better take note of this team full of youngsters playing with skill and going toe to toe with ENG.

Rice was poor, as were both Trippier and Shaw. But it seemed to me we took the foot off the gas and played for a draw over the last 20 minutes.

I've never understood Rice, tbh. I've never seen anything from him any different than he showed today... a step slow of foot and decision making, and technically and physically not all that. MMA owned him.
