So USMNT disavowing any knowledge of the flag shenanigans. One practical problem on the ultimate punishment side of this is that FIFA probably goes harder against government meddling with national teams than anything and that can be seen as such.

I think FIFA does a Formula 1 type deal and investigates "after the competition is over" but that they do sanction us in some way. Maybe we end up with a couple nations league home games played "behind closed doors" and some big fine. They won't go too hard on the main host of the next World Cup but they'll do something above token level. Just a hunch.

Suppose if they consider it a "federation" offense they could involve the USWNT in the sanctions too which would be a 1000% on brand thing for FIFA to do considering the genesis of what is going on in Iran.

1) I'm pretty sure like 90% of the uproar here is Iranian-govt bots.
2) Iran might want to read the rest of the FIFA rulebook.

What's this about? I must have missed it

The US soccer official twitter posted a graphic (forget if it was the group standings or just a preview of the match). They took the symbol from the center of the Iranian flag (which I believe is some sort of islamic image) off, just leaving the 3 colors. They said this was in support of the anti-govt/human rights protests that are going on there right now).

Obviously the Iranian govt and those that support it (which I'm guessing includes most of the traditional media that they've sent to cover the tournament) didn't like that very much.

I don't think FIFA has any jurisdiction over a Concacaf controlled game like Nations League. The individual confederations maintain some independence in cases like this. FIFA can only punish games that FIFA controls, like World Cup Qualifiers (for example what they did to Mexico for the chants).

If there is punishment, it will likely be in the form of a fine that they hopefully donate to a charity.

I took all last week off to watch games (and see family, blech)... killing me to be working today. But I have an appt. early tomorrow afternoon that will have me unavailable for a couple of hours. I should be able to check email and respond occasionally.

Did the stadium lights just go out for a second in Brazil/Switzerland?

I can't tell if it was my feed or the stadium but something looked like a blink
Checked on twitter...it was indeed the stadium lights. Looks like about 5-10 seconds of dim lighting. Wasn't complete dark, but wasn't the normal lighting.

Also luckily it was during a dead ball when Brazil was getting setup for a corner kick so it did not really interrupt play.

Btw based on my quick scan on things a draw here basically would make both of the final Group G games essentially knock out games where Brazil and Switzerland start with what amounts to a 1.5 goal lead. Will double check if this pans out after the game but what I at first construed as a nightmare scenario to map out might prove simplest of all.

I also think a running clock is preferred as it keeps control out of the hands of a home timekeeper.

It could still be up to the ref. Just make a signal to the booth like they do in football. Wouldn’t have to stop it on every throw in, just injuries, goals, and the like.

I guess we only find out, maybe if Gio decides to say something after GGG leaves the team soon. But even then, that does not benefit Gio as it is not going to look very good to a perspective coach to see a player trashing the previous one on the way out the door.

I assume Wynalda's comments came from Claudio, so its probably something we're just going to have to learn to live with over the next decade or so regardless of who is coaching. This old guard and the boy will probably never be satisfied.

Holy carp! I just saw the camera pan to 3 female Brazil fans in tank tops.
They’ve shown them a few times. hope they don’t disappear tonight.

I don't want to get banned so I will put this as soft as possible, but the lack of female fans at this WC removes so much of the flair, color and fun of the crowd shots.

Luckily, 2026 is going to be the exact opposite. Not only will it be hotter (encouraging less clothes), there will be more teams and SIGNIFICANTLY more female fans who won't be arrested but instead will be celebrated for their attire.

Have the confirmed the US cities for the 2026 games yet? I'd imagine Dallas is a shoe in, but what about Chicago or KC? Just looking for places near enough to where I live.

Just looked it up on my Google machine. Dallas & KC are my 2 best bets.

Is this a thing? They don't have officials for this stuff? Like the guys on the field as the "official" timekeepers?

actually, all the way up to this WC, the ref was the only person in charge of time keeping. In this WC, they have added to the 4th official responsibilities to help with time keeping.

start saving now. I don't even want to guess at how much they are going to charge for these given the amount of demand there will be.

Bummed there's no games in Phoenix.

in 99% of games when a team goes up by 1 goal late, they simply sit back and the losing team attacks like crazy to get the draw. After Brazil took the lead, they have been camped in the Swiss end of the field.

I'd imagine a random group stage ticket will be around $100...depending on who is playing.

ummm.......................I don't think it will be any where close to $100.

If memory serves, I paid around $85 for a WC ticket. That was back in 1994 when the game was 1/1000th as popular as it is today.

I think the average ticket price will be extremely high.

For parking, sure.

I'm guessing the minimum for most games will be $250/ticket in the group stage.

US and any other top matchups, I'm thinking $350-400/ticket, to start.

"THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY FOR A TIE!!"
