Netherlands have a lot of incentive to win big today, right?
At least outscore Qatar by more than Ecuador could outscore Senegal...which should be a fairly even matchup.

I imagine the Dutch will keep the pedal down until they are up by 3 goals at least.

Okay so we have Group A scenarios....

Ecuador advance with
A Win or Draw
Or a Loss and Netherlands loss where Ecuador loses by less
Or loss and Netherlands loss where they lose by the same margin and Ecuador outscores Netherlands
Or loss and Netherlands loss where they lose by the same margin, score the same and they draw the lucky ping pong ball.

Or a Loss by 1 and Ecuador/Senegal draw
Or a Loss by 2 and Ecuador/Senegal draw and they score as many or more goals than Senegal.
Or a Senegal loss.

Senegal advance with a win
Or a draw and Netherlands loses by 3+
Or a draw and Netherlands loses by 2 and Senegal outscores Netherlands

Qatar advances with a serious serious amount of bribery

Trying to pace my work today so the rest of the office hears typing, mouse clicking, paper shuffling, and desk drawers opening and closing from 1:00 - 3:00 today.

I'm very interested to see if time wasting will be accounted for in these 3rd matchday games. My god, if CR only needed a draw, they may just all lay down on the pitch for 90 minutes.

Woah, didn't know they moved the start times up an hour for the final group stage games. I knew they played both at the same time but I assumed the morning games would be an hour later. Need to adjust my work schedule this week accordingly.

Should I be offended by the Senegalese dance line all in whiteface?
Did they ever enslave a bunch of white people and take away their basic civil rights? Oh, and then do bad plays where they made themselves up to look like white people?

If not, then no.

Sorry, just making a stupid joke. I am thoroughly enjoying the African color and flair, but was generally curious as to why they did that.
No worries. I just don't have an outlet now that the forum that shall not be named has been closed so I catch myself overreacting in here. :lmao:

I have noticed a lot of comments along the lines of teams not actually trying their hardest to score as many goals as possible. Just doing enough to skate by to the next round.

What is the philosophy behind this. Are they trying to keep their "good stuff" a secret until they need it, trying to conserve energy or health, or something else. Kind of confusing.

I guess the NBA half asses it for 3/4 of the year and baseball players half *** it off and on throughout the season, so it isn't uncommon, but that is regular season stuff.

If this question should be moved to the Quadrennial World Cup is Lame/FAQ thread let me know.
I've always understood it to be the bolded as well as avoiding any yellow/red card situations.

I was going to say you could be offended only if they were wearing khakis and dancing really badly. And even then it would be hilarious.

This Senegal crowd is awesome. In back to back shots, they had a guy with some feathered headdress and a guy with giant green glasses, then the next clip had someone in a huge lion mask that actually looked like it may have been a taxidermized lion.

And every single one of them is dancing non-stop.

Also cracking up at the Senegalese coach. The grey hoodie/baseball hat combo looks like some dude wandering around Wal-Mart instead of coaching in the World Cup.

USA is +100 at my book. Do you guys think they have a better than even chance of winning?
All the oddsmakers I've seen have it exactly 50/50 on which team advances. Since the US only advances with a win I'd guess they're 50% likely to win.
I'm going to bet for Iran. That pretty much guarantees a US victory.
Appreciate you taking one for the team.

Be sure to bet the "double chance" of a draw and Iran win.

The atmosphere here is incredible. Relentless drumming for 2 hours and surely at least another hour. By far my favourite game so far.

Its not about not trying hard or saving anything. The nature of the game is that the more a team attacks, the more it also opens itself up to concede goals to the opposition. So when a team is behind and really needs to score and is attacking balls out, they are also by definition assuming a risk of giving up goals or even losing the game. If a team is up a goal or two, or - in a tournament group stage setting - only needs to draw the game to advance, the smart play is generally to play more conservatively, set the team up more balanced or more defensively to achieve whatever result is needed. In some cases, late in the game it becomes apparent a team is not even trying to score at all - just defending, fouling, trying to run the game out. Teams do this by choosing different players, setting up in different formations and using different tactics - more attacking, balanced or defensive. If Holland goes up by 2-3 goals today, their best interests are probably best served by sinking back a bit, giving some of the attacking players a rest, running the clock and avoiding a defensive mistake.
