After I screamed "He Baggioed it!!!" at the top of my lungs to no one in particular, my daughter comes down stairs and gives me the "WTF is wrong with you" look she has patented over the years.

Her consternation told me this was not the time to tell her the tale of the Divine Ponytail. Maybe some day...

As a baseball guy who loves competition and has enjoyed watching this, I'd like to ask a dumb question. After watching the US play, and then watching the games yesterday and today.............how many of "our" guys would start on Brazil, Argentina, England, France, Netherlands? How many would not start, but be on the roster? Just trying to get an idea of where we are talent wise as it is easy to see that "team" wise we have a ways to go.

Thanks.

He at least avoids the additional humiliation of the rat tail.

0 for Brazil and France.

You could probably get to an argument for one on some of the other teams. Certainly no more than 1-2 though.

I think with Argie we could get 3 on the field. That is not a loaded team by any stretch of the imagination.

Of course, this question is a bit meaningless because of our age. 3.5 years from now, it might be a little more interesting.

For the roster, we would have a decent amount on both Netherlands and Argie.

Very few would crack the roster of Brazil or France, if any. France is already missing some top players and their next tier down is still incredible. They are the deepest country on the planet right now, followed by Brazil.

99% of countries would have a hard time rostering more than 1 player on France or Brazil.

I did not mean to be snarky, I was more speaking to the fact that most of the US''s best players are also ~a cycle too young.

If Morocco gets to the Final, they need to win it. No use crashing the party if you aren't going to finish.

I'm sure somebody will correct me, but it feels like if they upset France that's probably the biggest upset ever? Especially when you factor in what's at stake.

Had avoided the England-France score, just finished watching it. I don't think I've ever yelled at a sports player as loudly as I yelled at Kane when he missed that. Oof.

So thinking about Kane sailing that PK and prior discussion of high vs low - is there any difference in penalty success from run of play vs the pk shootout takes? Just curious.

A day before his death, Wahl discussed coming down with bronchitis on a Thursday episode of his Fútbol with Grant Wahl podcast, as ESPN reports. While Wahl said at the time he was doing "slightly better," he claimed he was not at "100 percent" as he prepared to attend the Friday match. "My body told me, even after the U.S. went out, 'Dude, you are not sleeping enough,' and it rebelled on me. So I've had a case of bronchitis this week," he said. "I've been to the medical clinic at the media center twice now, including today. I'm feeling better today, I basically canceled everything on this Thursday, that I had, and napped."

Similarly, on his Substack, Wahl explained that his body "finally broke down on me," and again detailed the sickness. He described himself as having "three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work."

"What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort," he wrote. "I didn't have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I'm already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno."
Probably already posted, but thought I'd share the whole quotes. So sad.

Multi cross post here, but on Netflix there’sa travel food show called Somebody Feed Phil. It’s pretty solid overall, but if you want some insight into Croatia there’s a fantastic episode in season six.

Just a beautiful country
I’d recommend a superb, if lengthy, book: Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, written by British author Rebecca West in 1941. She had traveled through then-Yugoslavia and shares both a travelogue and a historical narrative. It’s a total immersion into the beauty - and tension - of the region prior to the war.

I just read a story in the athletic about the Arg/Ned game. An Arg player sent a rocket from point blank range at the Ned bench and didn't get kicked out? What? Is it because this has never happened before and they didn't know how to deal with it? I refuse to believe this has never happened with all the craziness in this sport.

I'm not sure if that should have been a straight red, and if it was given the card-happy nature of the ref, the game likely gets abandoned

here's the clip

Paredes got a yellow for it. Not sure about the "never happened before" question.

I think what he means is that it may have caused an already extreme volatile game to boil over to the point where the refs would lose control of the game and would walk off the field.
