***Official 2023 Pro Cycling Thread*** - The Vuelta will be a Primoz, Vigo, G, Remco mosh pit (2 Viewers)

That was weird. Was watching the the Peacock app via my xfinity cable box. That goes out. Trying using the Firestick attached to the same TV. Nothing. Switched to an Amazon Firestick TV, That works. Try the cable box app, working again.

peloton going 56 kph (35 mph)

what is youse guys top speed?

mine is around 15 mph but that's on a clunky 40 lb Citibike going full gas lol

r/peloton is typical dregs of the stone age but once or twice a day a gem comes across....

It’s weird how a major part of drumming up the interest for a sprint finish involves convincing the audience that a crash is inevitable.

The roundabout at 1km, the drain covers at 800m, the climate protestors glued to the road at 500m, the girlfriends looking through the riders’ whatsapp convos with “Louise from Laruns” at 300m, the confrontation with the futility of existence at 150m…

Too much tension.

MvdP has everybody cooked off by the time he launches

Crazy that you’re not leading. I still like my team and think the attrition of 3 weeks will push me up the standings. Need Dylan to get another top 5 tomorrow and really need træn to overcome his fractured elbow. Thought he’d have done much more this first week.

Win a GC stage = points classification at the finish + KOM on the climbs + Assist points for pulling the peloton. On flat stages you still get 40-100 from your GC leaders bc overall standings don't shift.

Sprinters get 20 or less from the (usually) one intermediate sprint on all the hilly stages, and zero points for points classification on the mountain stage days. It's all or nothing.

I didn't realize that he only weighs 132 pounds. These guys should be in the Giro Donne.

most of the climber/GC guys have that kind of frame
  • HIndley 60 kg
  • Vingegaard 60 kg
  • Ciccone 58 kg
  • Buchmann 59 kg
  • A Yates 58 kg
  • S Yates 58 kg
  • Gaudu 53 kg
  • Pogočar 66 kg
  • Skjelmose 65 kg
  • Rodriguez 67 kg
sprinters are usually a bit thicker:
  • Philipsen 75 kg
  • Pedersen 70 kg
  • Van Aert 78 kg
  • Ewan 69 kg
  • Cavendish 70 kg
  • Jakobsen 78 kg
  • Dylan Groenewegen 70 kg

miguel Induráin's ability and physical size—1.86 m (6 ft 1 in) and 76 kilograms (168 lb)

boy he could climb.

Jan Ullrich also always looked huge on his bike compared to the other riders and also seemed to fly up the mountain pushing those big gears.

That’s how I rode. Did several power tests at 90 to 100 at the insistence of my coach at the time and always tested better at 60 to 70 rpm turning as big of a gear as feasible. Worked for me as I’d finished with the top racers in local tris on the bike and then they’d put 3 min per mile into me on the run. Maybe I was trashing my legs but always felt I could stay out of the red zone by shifting some effort from cardio to legs.

Most of our best riders locally were 150-180 pounds. Just didn’t see many guys walking around at 130 pounds. Heck, the top female riders locally weighed more than the top gc guys. I can’t grasp how a dude can weigh 130 pounds and not live in a Russian concentration camp.

I get it. That’s why I picked my team the way I did. ;)

God I suck. And I just noticed McNulty isn't even in the tour? I suck so bad I even screwed that up. :lmao:

Watching the highlights from stage 6 last night I was struck by that scene of Wout right after he peeled off and he was barely moving, spinning in place. It looked like a spectator stepped in to hold him up from falling over. Unbelievable day for him once again.

@Sand

Brings back memories of Snake Mountain.

I should have taken you up this https://www.strava.com/segments/649200

From kilometer 2 to 3 you gain 150m. That's a 15% average grade. It average 10.5% for 5k and then flattens out at the top. We called it the "wall" because there was a 300m section at 20% that was soul crushing. Back when I was self managing my home up there I'd work at home for 8 hours and then run up and back down the mountain before driving home. I could run up it faster than I could bike it.

I assumed you were protesting him not being selected lol

(he's already over 8000 km on the year & having a great year, presumably this was the plan all along)

Not listed for the Vuelta either, though I suppose that could change

Kuss is the only top 50 GC guying riding all three Grand Tours

You just like seeing me suffer! :p

Cavendish: "I was on the right wheels... Once I kicked, my gears jumped from the 11 to 12. I had to sit down. Then it goes back to the 11, I tried to stand up again, and then back to the 12, and then sit down. There was nothing you could do. I'm bitterly disappointed."

Phillipsen: "He [Cavendish] was really strong. I would also have loved to see him win, I think everybody [would]."

6th, 5th, 2nd

Cav might have three more chances. Stage 11 (tough opener for him), Stage 18 - when GC is probably decided, the other teams will be desperate for a win - and Champs-Élysées.

Calling it now, he gets it on the Champs-Élysées.

Would be cool - took the 21st at the Giro too

It’s not like they’re gifting him anything either, dude still has an incredible burst…looked great today, if he doesn’t have to sit down, who knows.

I agree, especially if Phillipsen has the green jersey wrapped up.

Phillipsen already speaking of Paris yesterday. He still needs to get try to win intermediates and rack up points in the remaining bunch sprints but I think he already has the mentality of protecting his lead.

What to make of the current state of affairs with respect to deviation of line and ASO just flat out refusing to relegate the winner? There's no real consequence to relegating Skjelmose or Van Der Poel, Jasper knows that. Seems like they won't act until we see a major crash or someone in the barriers.

Part of the issue IMO is they need more specificity in the rulebook. If you look at the FIA regulations for F1, there are very clear and specific guidelines overtaking, the racing line, when you must back out and when you are entitled to the space, et al. In cycling the rule says you cannot deviate in such a way that endangers other riders. Well as we've seen, if you are reckless enough that the other rider has to back out or sit up to avoid (WvA, Bini.) If there's no crash then ASO acts like "no harm, no foul." It's not fair play, they need to fix this. Rewrite the rules with greater specificity. Have some freaking backbone enforcing the regulations.

Also, not allowing teams to file a formal protest is ridiculous. Being an ostrich won't resolve the issue.

Longish ride (200 km) with an intermediate sprint and 3 moderate climbs on the back half (one cat 3 followed by two cat 4s.) Not a great stage for the pure sprinters who cannot climb, but perfect for Van Aert, Pederson, MVdP, maybe a wild card like Alaphilippe or Cort.

Already 30 degrees (85+) and expected to exceed 35 (95-100.) Gonna be a scorcher but no GC action until tomorrow.

Why are there 20? Guessing they took out the ITT.

Number of stages per stagetype.

Van Der Poel and Van Aert at the back of the peloton at the start, no interest in the break apparently.

It's interesting how often we've seen them riding together and chatting several times this week. They are not friends, never have been, but the rivalry in cyclocross (8 world titles between them) and the classicas has gone on for 200+ races now. Maybe they bonded over fans ringing their doorbell at 3 a.m. lol
