***Official 2025 Golf Thread,, woz humblebrags he's secretly a plus hcp*** (7 Viewers)

Lost by one gross today against our new law clerk who was a D1 golfer. He might have intentionally missed a 6 footer on 18 to halve the bets but I was right there with him. He may be the best player in our club at a plus something (carries no handicap fresh off div 1 golf).

Ready for my interclub match tomorrow. Never been more confident in my game.
What does that mean? Do scores in sponsored tournaments and stuff not count for handicaps?
I guess in theory college golfers could post their scores but it's not the norm as college golf there is no use of hcp
Correct. Also, I believe many of the guys would get in trouble for playing in money tournaments so, per our new law clerk, they're really discouraged from carrying a handicap.

And I choked away a lead to lose on the last hole...

Shot 80 with like 5 legitimately burned edges after I had a one-up lead pretty quickly. My opponent grinded our some good par saves when my birdie putts didn't drop and I twice let him off the hook with two bad three putts. My club won though so that's good.

Just got back from our 24 guy marathon in Palm Springs. Great week and if any of you are every considering a phenomenal guys trip I can give you the lay of the land there to do it up right. Phenomenal resort - we take over all 24 rooms. Staff loves us. Food is top notch - for the Champions dinner they did paella and a pig roast. Excellent week for me - went 3-0 in my Ryder Cup format matches, our team won, I took down Low Gross and won more than my share of skins and CTPs. Would have been a complete home run but a guy slow played Aces and trapped me with my Kings to knock me out of the poker tournament. Only part that was iffy was I had a 4 stroke lead after the first day of Gross/Net play and I was protecting the lead today vs being loose. Lagged putts vs being aggressive, didn't make anything, didn't go at pins and was just too tight overall. Ball striking suffered. But hey, ended up winning by 6 and that's all I'll remember.
Sounds awesome! What’s that set you back in the back account?
About $1500 all in. Room, golf, food, shirts/hats, poker tourney entry, etc

Could not buy a putt today. Reason I've been playing well is I been getting up and down or just hitting wedges great in general. well today my thin wedge from 60:yards was back. Did it 3 times. Salvaged bogies. Still ended up with a 77.

I've gone from a7.7 at the start of May to now a 6.3. it's been fun. If I hit my wedges like the last 2 months today and or made a few putts I feel like I could have been almost even par but it's still been a great ride. Still haven't shot even for 18 holes but I'm not complaining

Around the greens is so difficult for me. Good news today was that I didn't chunk anything. Bad news is that I was blasting everything past the hole leaving difficult two/three putts all day. :hot:

But if you need someone to hit a fairway wood, I am your man.

Oh, and I want to buy a mini driver but MAN are those things spendy - even the previous models.

AZ guy here. East Valley. (((DM me to hook up)))

Just getting into it. 3rd lesson. only played like 6 times

just picked up this driver for $199 plus $10 grip upgrade. https://www.pxg.com/en-us/golf-clubs/gen5-0311-driver/DR-PXG18.html local

oh, and that was after an hour of "fitting" custom Grip, shaft, weights, etc. pretty sweet. and free box of balls.

$25 fitting, then taken off purchase. and I only purchased the cheapest driver, not a set

Well still playing decent but my driver is a hot mess. Block slice, or a pull rocket.

For 10 rounds I was no exaggerating, like 85% fairways and if I wasn't I was just off

The last 2 rounds have been all over the map and lost 3 balls :(

Been playing pretty well. Focus right now is hinge hinge hinge. A good hinge that feels super exaggerated to me seems to be doing the trick nicely.

I’m doing the same. I’ve been told for years I’m too stiff and too late hinging. Last lesson dude really ingrained hinging to create a lever then unhinging to release with power. Distance and accuracy have increased with more focus on hands/wrists and less on body. Sometimes I forget to rotate which leaves shots right, but my only body related thought now is belt buckle to the target.

I start my big member guest today. 5 9-hole matches then a qualifying horse race. We are the best team in our flight but the handicap disparity is really like 2 strokes across the flight so it should be a good battle each match (I also know every other member in my flight and we're all dead even with each other so it may come down to who brought the biggest sandbagging guest :lmao: )

We bought our own team last night in the calcutta. We went for a middling price so feeling good about the value. Now it's birdie time.

We had the bright idea to play 1ball from 6700 and one from our normal tees after work and it was 90+ degrees. Big mistake, tight back exhausted by the 11th hole, really didn't care,my 2 worst rounds all year. Came back with a 77 the next day. Probably shouldn't have posted those 2 scores but oh well. Up to a 6.5

Put down my deposit for a Bandon Dunes trip in May. Everything I hear about this place makes it seem almost impossibly great. Anyone ever been? We have 12 guys for a full week, one round at every course.
Just reporting back that this was an incredible experience. Absolutely Mecca for golfers. We had 12 guys, which honestly might have been too many, it was hard to organize at times. Though it did make it fun for action.

Arrived on what turned out to be our "worst" weather day with wind blowing 30 mph. We played Bandon Preserve, one of the par 3 courses. I guess I always assumed a par 3 course would be 18 holes of traditional par 3's. This was 13 holes with some holes as short as 65 yards. They were beautiful holes, it reminded me of Saint Andrews or Ireland golf. I had to hit flighted-down 7 and 6 irons to keep balls out of the wind, and thought to myself, I'm going to forget about any scoring goals in wind like this, it's just totally different golf.

Then we got incredibly lucky - the wind laid down essentially the rest of the week. Maybe a one-club wind most of the time, and temps like 55-60.

I was hoping to score 85 or better each day:

Day 1, Sheep Ranch, 77. Thought this course was almost too easy with no wind, no bunkers, no OB, and no water. I probably should have played back a tee. But a great course and great start to the week.
Day 2, Old Macdonald, 84. I loved this layout and this is the one I think I'd most like to get another crack it.
Day 3, Bandon Dunes, 86. The original course. I had 41 putts (!), so frustrating but an awesome course. We did the "punch bowl" in the afternoon, which is their enormous practice green complex with "courses" laid out on it with truly impossible putts. More money and trash talk exchanged that afternoon than the entire trip combined.
Day 4, Pacific Dunes, 78. I ****ing loved everything about this course, and it didn't hurt that I played pretty well - three birdies on par 3's, and one of them about 6 inches from an ace, and even had a couple of bad breaks or I could have gone even lower. We also played Shorty's, the other part 3 course in the afternoon.
Day 5, Bandon Trails, 88 :bag: I think I was tired and tired of golf.

Anyway I loved it and would go back every year if I could afford it. I have thoughts on do's and don'ts if anyone is heading there any time soon.

I just don't understand this club. Some rounds it goes perfectly straight and mid distance. Some rounds it is straight and flies forever like I'm Rory Fricken McIlroy. Some rounds I am snap hooking everything. Some rounds I have a super slice and am hitting the adjacent fairways to the right of me. I don't freaking get it.

This has been a big focus of mine too. I have always been a late hinger. Straight back and I hinge at the top, which creates a whippy effect. I thought it was lag. It was probably casting. Either way it created a sense of lacking control during the transition and my body would sometimes panic and tense up.

I've been focusing on hinging during the backswing instead of at the top of the swing and it seems to have improved consistency. But every once in a while I'll get stuck in this rut where it just feels weird in the middle of a round and I lose all confidence. I'm sure with more reps it will pay off.

My swing thought has been kind of "pushing the handle down" during my backswing.

Like you, I have also been struggling with pushing shots right more often.

Awesome. Sounds like you ranked the courses

Sounds like you had an awesome time. Wish my weather matched yours! Pacific is amazing. I too didn’t really get the love for Sheep Ranch

Literally have no idea what to do right now.

I have had what I guess you could call the driver yips pretty much all year. I can take a million dry hacks or even hit balls on the range and make something resembling a good golf swing. But when I get on the course, I basically swing the club like a spastic 6 year old. My body is physically incapable of just making a turn and coming through and hitting a driver without either swaying like a maniac (causing me to hit these insane tops where I leave a thin divot like a foot in front of where ball was) or just hitting these horrible low snap hooks. I dont even want to think about what it looks like to people watching because I'm sure its absolutely hilarious.

And then when I just tell myself to just stay BACK (just doing everything I possibly can to avoid swaying) .....no matter what.....there's like a 50/50 chance that just nothing activates and I just hit an all-arms giant slice off the planet right. Its like there's a disconnect in my brain that just wont allow me to bring the club back to the ball without moving my body 6 feet forward. Its ruining almost every round I play because you can basically count on 3-4 holes where I'm ether re-loading or hitting my 2nd shot from barely past the ladies tees.

And once I do it once......its literally all I think about the rest of the round. So then every single swing is 100% defensive and I'm just trying to guide the club and PRAYING that I somehow hit it even 200 yards in the general direction of the hole. I've switched to 3 wood on a few shorter holes which was mostly working out. But now the last few days I've been swaying like a crazy person with that club too.

I honestly dont even feel like taking a lesson would help because I just know I'd be able to hit it fine on the range and then I'd just go right back to being a total basket case on the course.

Yesterday I made 3 birdies on our back 9 (and lipped out a 4th on the 2nd hardest hole on the course) but then I made 2 doubles (and both of those required me to make a pretty tough putt) and a triple because I couldn't get off the tee.

Honestly making me just want to quit at this point. Its zero fun playing when you're literally just waiting for the round-wrecking hole (or 2....or 3) to come. Started off par-par today....feeling good, but just knew it was coming. Then its off the planet right....topped it on the re-tee....made a 7 and I was mentally finished.

Now that I play more than a handful of times per year, I finally got fitted for new irons. Been using Tommy Armor's from the 1980's that are too small for me since I was a teenager. I knew I'd add distance, but in my 7 iron test with the callaway 6i...it was 37 yards  Gonna be a whole new ball game now...

In my 35 years of playing golf, even during a 10 year stretch of only playing a handful of times, I have never had a problem with the driver. Until early this year. Same topping issue as you. Almost like taking a penalty stroke on every driver hole.

YouTube tips are what they are, but this helped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od4LAu3q-UY

I only think about/care about the setup. Mostly the consistent ball position part. From there I just swing. Has helped me tremendously.

Whisky + swing harder

My putting has been horrible for me. Missing a bunch of 6 footers, inconsistent misses. But my driver has been awful the last 3 rounds. Starts out like normal then somewhere along the way I hit these shots that only go like 3/4 of my normal distance sometimes with a fade. Just super weird. Cost me a couple shots

And I can no longer hit woods off the deck. I come over the top and smother them. That used to be my second best shot now I have zero confidence so I just lay up with 6 irons all the time now smh

Put your change in your left pocket. Go on, do it. Now, tie your left shoe in a double knot. Right now, do it! Turn the hat backwards. Turn your hat around! Do it, TLEF316! Take this tee and stick it behind your left ear.

You look like a fool?

What do you think you look like shooting chili peppers up Lee Janzen's ***? Do it now or I'm going to quit. I swear to God I'll quit. Good. Take this ball and hit it up the fairway.

played a golf sim for the first time in Vegas.

Not sure what constitutes a lost ball in a sim but I hit two that went into other bays. :oldunsure:
Saw J.T. Poston I think hit himself a little hosel rocket the other day. It befells us all.
Lol, mine was a wedge shot. Hit the top of the screen and shot across the room bouncing over some shuffleboard tables into another bay.

It was really fun though, I played the Lahinch course in Ireland. Got through 14 holes at a cool +34

Lol fair.

haven't had time to get into a rhythm and playing often. It's been over 110 for weeks here, so just miserable to play. Looking into some lessons for the wife and I soon too

Got over to the coast a few weeks ago and played a par 3/4 course, hit the irons pretty well and smoked a 5 wood within 20 feet on a 220 yard par 4.

Promptly three putted for par :kicksrock:

I get like that with both when I don’t complete my backswing. Lack of commitment is the cause for me

found a local sim place, just did an hour and actually hit well. Might join and take a few lessons there.

Any recommendations on doing sim golf or not? Does it mess up(nothing really for me to mess up yet) your actual golf?

Sims are good, especially in winter, bc it lets you see what your ball is doing off contact and may help you adjust.

Sims are bad bc usually you’re hitting off mats, which are way more forgiving than grass. So, you may start to hit the ball more fat and not realize it.

Any recommendations on doing sim golf or not? Does it mess up(nothing really for me to mess up yet) your actual golf?
Sims are good, especially in winter, bc it lets you see what your ball is doing off contact and may help you adjust.

Figured there would be some give and take with it. I'm just happy to get swings in.

This place had a variety of tees (1/4" - 1.5") to use on the mat where the Vegas one did not, only had a big one for tee shots. The tiny tee seemed to help with short irons/wedges, so you weren't digging into the mat to get lift. Should I avoid those or just do what helps get a consistent swing?

I mean, respectfully, if you're nowhere near breaking 100 and firing the ball all over the place I'd suggest getting reps in so you can get used to finding the club face.

Think of a sim like a really nice machine batting cage for baseball. It's great for reps so the hitter gets more practice in and it can build confidence. However, if a high level player hits in there too much during the season, it can be detrimental by messing up his vision and timing.

Lots of good clicks have increased my confidence lately. A couple range sessions this week really helped
1. The aforementioned pivot/don't sway with the driver. Added some distance

2. Realized for my longer irons, particularly the 6, that I had the ball much too far back in my stance. Mostly fixed my "digging in" problem

3. Short chipping, like around the greens - I use a gap/52 degree and it was just never very good. This week on a whim I closed the face and it made a giant difference. Accuracy and distance control were much improved. This is huge because it's probably where I bleed the most shots.

4. Tried using the Claw grip on a whim with the putter on short to mid putts. That also seems to be better. But that could change next week

I'm finally about to hit leave! Ready to line up weekday playing times, coaching at least weekly...goal is to get the HC to/under 13 by October.

I'm an 18.9

My biggest challenge is consistency. I think my strategy and course management far exceeds my index, but that's only so good when you chunk or top every third shot and cause issues regardless of club.

Open to any advice from this crew but thought I'd share the journey! It's been a couple years since I had serious time to practice and try to improve.

No matter where the pin is. Aim for the middle of the green

Agree, hate the sim especially when playing courses on it. It fine to get reps in

I try to mostly ignore the pin, and depending on green shape go for center, or choose the club and line where the miss is least dangerous. For example of the middle is over a bunker 130 out, I'm more likely to take a 140 club and go to the middle/back, or take the 130 but put it off to the safe side miss for a good place to chip, because of how likely it is that I hit my 130 not quite right and it goes 118 into the bunker lol.

I really hate hitting off hard mats. It hurts my wrist
