Niners getting those extra 2013 picks for ammo to trade up and get Barkley!
If Sir Charles Barkley plays football like he swings a golf club we're screwed :lmao: Sorry, couldn't resist puttin' in a round mound of rebound poke :) I'm sure if Harbaugh wants Barkley next year then Josh Johnson, who he coached, and Colin Kaepernick may not get a starting gig. They musta felt something about Kaepernick to take him in last years' 2nd round right after Dalton so I'm not sure what their plans are for him and newly acquired Josh Johnson are then for 2013. I think Barkley though would end up being better than Kaepernick. Maybe they might be looking at a top RB in next year's draft with Gore aging. Can Kendall Hunter be a workhorse back though? They just got LaMichael James too so I'm curious how they use them. I'm sure he'll see some punt returns after Kyle Williams did so well in the NFC championship game, lol. Not sure who or what blue chipper RB's there will be but if they can use the picks they've accumulated to get a stud QB,RB or whatever player then making those trades in this years' draft will pay off.

The Michigan State Safety they drafted in the 6th, Trenton Robinson, is from my hometown and went to the same school I went to...he was born two years after I graduated, so I dont know him.

lol

My impressions of the 49er's haul this draft:

1) AJ Jenkins - Admittedly he was not on the radar at all when I was waiting for the pick. Even during the announcement I thought they picked Janoris Jenkins and Goddell just said his name wrong. But the more I watch of this game, the more I understand the move. Great separation skills with good catch radius and top end speed, not great run after catch skills and kind of on the skinny side. But I think the media overrates the physical dimensions of receivers (as they do with most positions). Sometimes fans freak out about "reaches" like this, but to me this shows me the front office is doing their homework.

2) LaMichael James - I think the guy they wanted here was Isaiah Pead. I see what James brings to the offense, but how many of these guys can you put on the field at one time? I suppose it was somewhat of a luxury pick, and watching Sproles all over the field in the divisional round must have given Harbaalke some ideas. I am anxious to see James in preseason, because it'll be immediately obvious whether his quickness translates to the pro game, and how they will use him. With how much Smith likes to check down, he could be a difference maker in a reggie bush/sproles type of role.

3) Joe Looney - Regardless of how well this pick turns out, I like that the new front office is no longer blowing 1st-2nd rounders on interior lineman. The reports I've read thus far regarding Looney seem wildly inconsistent, some say he's a great at pass blocking and so-so vs. the run, others the exact opposite. The fact that they traded around 3 times before selecting him tells me Looney is probably their consolation prize for whoever they had targeted in the third. That said, it's not going hard to look better than Rachal, who at times was a turnstile for DEs. (as a sidenote, I was very impressed by what I saw from Kilgore last preseason)

4) Darius Fleming is the Chris Culliver of this draft. A physical specimen who didn't really wow anyone at the collegiate level. Give last year's results, the idea of drafting "athletes" of good character who just need to be coached up seems sound. He's quick off the ball, which is a trait that cannot be coached. He will need to show some special teams prowess to make the active roster on sundays.

5) Trenton Robinson - When I first read his scouting profile I thought he could be a poor man's Earl Thomas. He doesn't have the cover skills or closing speed of Thomas, but seems to always be around the ball. Really needs to tackle better. A good need/value pick here.

6) Jason Slowey - Like Kilgore last year, the niners take a small school lineman with one of their late picks. I love these moves because it's a cheap way to find quality starters and this late in the draft you may as well shoot for the moon. The lack of any info or scouting report on him at all just makes the pick that much more intriguing.

7) Cam Johnson - A medical condition apparently scared off alot of teams from Cam Johnson who was supposed to go in the first 2 rounds. Had the tools to excel in the college game, let's see if it translates in the pros. Interesting that he dropped all the way to the 7th given the general benign nature of his sickle cell trait however...

I'm actually surprisingly content with the draft so far. We are loading up on offense since that was our weakness last season. Kyle Williams is as good as gone though, IMO. And if Ginn gets hurt, then James should be able to handle the return duties. Will be a very interesting camp.
When James was still on the board and the 49ers on the clock, I said out loud "James". Don't know why I said it, but to me I was thinking "#### it. Go get him". The 49ers need speed. Now they have some in Jenkins and James, as well as Hunter.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Jenkins pick just yet, but my initial reaction when I heard James was "wow." I think people expecting the niners to be a grind it out team again are going to be surprised. With Moss, Manningham, Jenkins and James, the niners have invested a fair amount into adding explosiveness to the team. Jenkins might still be a bit of a project, but I like the unexpected direction the draft took.

I really like the the Cam Johnson pick. May be a situational player given his medical issues, but even a situational player in the 7th round is a success. I don't see where his condition is benign though.

The reason I said benign is because there are quite a few NFL players diagnosed with the same sickle cell trait, yet continue to be effective players. It isn't as serious as full blown sickle cell disease.

Well, he is picked out of the 7th, and could be PS fodder anyway.

Was reading somewhere today, maybe it was Peter king, that Jenkins is fast but SF was really enamored with his ability to run crossing routes and those types of short to mid yardage, 3rd down conversion type stuff. That should help Alex quite a bit if Jenkins' skills in this department translate.

Smith still won't throw it to him.

Understood.

I like what I see from limited footage of Jenkins. He has that "makes things look easy" quality which was used alot describing Denarius Moore last season. I would not be surprised to see him have a similar rookie season, with a few big games, but mostly unnoteworthy for the majority of the season.

Peter King had an interesting commentary on the 49ers' draft, especially the Joe Looney pick on page 2 of this week's mmqb: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/peter_king/04/30/mmqb/1.html

Basically, Baalke parlayed one pick into four, still got the guy they wanted, and now we're sitting on 13 picks in the 2013 draft.

So at the end of the dealing, the Niners got their man. And they got this:

• The 180th pick in 2012 -- Michigan State free safety Trenton Robinson.

• Carolina's third-round pick in 2013.

• Indianapolis' fifth-round pick in 2013.

• Miami's sixth-round pick in 2013.

Would like to think that was true, but every post-draft story seems to indicate the draft fell "just like they drew it up".

Read a news story from st louis after day 1 regarding how they had AJ Jenkins as the guy they wanted (link), but stories coming out now are saying Quick was the guy "they wanted all along" (link).

If Harbaugh sits down with Alex Smith and has a talk with him something like this. "Look,we just got two guys that have speed and we're going to incorporate them into the offense this year. We're not going away from what we've been doing by running the ball and short passes, which got us to the NFC title game minus damn Kyle Williams  , but I want you to get the ball to AJ & LaMichael whenever we call it. May be more than a couple times a game. Yes we're gonna get Mossie in the mix as well cause if we don't it'll piss him off and he'll pout like a little baby, won't run routes or block and just muck up everything we're trying to do and we'll have to throw his #### out on the street.Oh yeah, you're gonna have that other guy too, what's his face, Manninghammy.Just put the ball where he can get it and don't let the dang DB get his hands on it. You're gonna have a lot of weapons to keep happy this year just be sure you do it or I'm sure Josh or Colin would love the chance to do it. Our defense is gonna get after it again this year and give us a lot of opportunities of a short field so don't muck that up either. Look Alex, you had your best year yet as a pro last year and now we've added pieces for you to improve on that. God Dabbit, you're a frigging #1 pick so go out there and show dem suns o' biotches why we took you #1 overall. So there's no reason this year for you to regress with the players we've added so don't make me have to put you on a short leash right next to the doghouse. You know Josh and Colin are gonna be on the sidelines drooling and hollering "Gimme da ball, let me in dat damn huddle I'll show ya" Finally Alex, here's your chance this year to take us to the promised land so don't muck it up or I'll be forced to go get Matt Barkley next year and you'll be lucky to play in a flag football pickup game on the beach. Nice we could have this little talk Alex,I'm sure you'll do all I ask of ya. I feel much better now,how bout you Alex? Now go out there and put some God Dabbit points on the board son"

Yeah, in the War Room when they seemed to want Vinny Curry, and then looked shocked when he was picked ahead of them. So I find all this "They got what they wanted" just hyperbole.

LOL. Harbaugh had Smith do what Harbaugh wanted, which was not to screw things up and only toss a few here and there. It was pure Game Manager QB stuff. I read when the Phins were looking at Smith they thought that he couldn't even beat out Matt Moore, so thus one to one year and a half more of the Bust. Yes, he is a Bust, considering all the time spent on Smith, no other QB's outside of drafting Kaep to push him, and Shaun Hill could have done what Smith did last season.

Yeah, if they don't win the division and go deep into the playoffs this year I could quite possibly see them taking their picks and whatever they have to to go out and get Matt Barkley. Provided he's healthy and doesn't regress in his production oe improvement. We added weaponsthat should be good enough to win a superbowl. Just not sure still that we can do it with Alex Smith. Hope he proves me wrong but I'm towards not being able to do it. You can argue the case for him all you want with different HC's & OC's but as the #1 pick he should have surely played better than he has. Face it, Smith is not a franchise QB you can build around, like Peyton Manning, and if you're going to win a title you need a franchise QB. Josh Johnson isn't it and I doubt Kaepernick is either. I'll give Kaepernick the benefit of the doubt and see where he's at in say 3 yrs. but the Niners NEED to understand that all the talent you may assemble isn't going to be worth squat if you don't have a QB who can play, has command of the offense, and can produce. Plain and simple. Is there any other college QB's out there that will be available for ther NFL next year that might fit the bill of a franchise QB other than Matt Barkley? Don't follow college football too much. I want this proud storied franchise to be a consistant top contender. That's one of the reasons I became a fan of them back in the stone age, lol. Yeah,I'm 60. I'll always back them and be a fan the rest of my life but dammit when are we going to realize that we can't win the war if we don't have a commanding general? If Barkley's the guy then go do what you need to put him on the team and let's get back to winning superbowls. Sounds easy, huh? I know it's not but when you look back over the years at the titles we've won we've had phenominal QB's during those times. Seemed to work then, I know the NFL's a different beast now, but it should still work now as well.

Alex Smith has weathered this rather tumultuous storm over the years and has done it with dignity and perseverance.Good job for puttin' up with what you had to Alex but I'm afraid , unless there's dramatic improvement this year, that you're not the QB that will win us our 6th ring. Alex has very good character but character doesn't win championships, excellant QB play does. So I'm sure he'd graciously step aside, not because he wants to, and hand over the reins to someone else. I think we had an ok draft this year and some of these guys are gonna be around a bit like AJ & LaMichael(IMO),so 49ers if you're listening, how about going out next year and finally getting us that franchise QB we need to win a SB title. This sport is more than a business and profit. Where's the craving, desire and fire for the team to go out and win titles? Harbaugh has those qualities I believe, in what I've seen so far.So, help him help the 49ers go get a title guys.

I don't think harbaugh and company savor the drama of eeking out wins with ball control any more than we fans do... They obviously felt an upgrade is needed at QB, that's why they drafted Kaepernick. I personally think he could make some noise as a FF QB this year if given the reins. I'm not sure why you've already written him off, but to answer your question, I believe Landry Jones should be within range if the niners miss the playoffs this year.Smith is what he is, but I don't ever envision Harbaugh pulling him in the middle of a game unless the niners are on a losing streak. I'm sure the 49ers brass will also want to see what they have in their 2nd round pick from last year. I just don't see Kaepernick riding the pine for the entire season again.

I'm a big fan of Tyler Wilson QB Arkansas. I may like him more than Barkley.Landry Jones Oklahoma is also an option.

They have 2 3rd round picks, and 2 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks each for 2013. A bit of wiggle room for they to maneuver with, even before the 2013 draft.

Seemed to work then, I know the NFL's a different beast now, but it should still work now as well.Alex Smith has weathered this rather tumultuous storm over the years and has done it with dignity and perseverance.Good job for puttin' up with what you had to Alex but I'm afraid , unless there's dramatic improvement this year, that you're not the QB that will win us our 6th ring.
I think the 49ers wanted Andy Dalton last year in the draft, but CIN stole him and then they traded up to get the best available QB in Kaep. If they had gotten Dalton, I would have been way less bitter, and even be OK with they moving to San Jose in the next few years. Well, I will never be OK with they moving to San Jose. Just happy with Dalton at QB.

Have a feeling Andy Dalton is gonna stir future "what if" conversations like missing out on Rodgers did, except we didn't have a choice with Dalton, but coming so close, we'll still be talking about it.

Well according to Jed logic, the South Bay is still the Bay Area, thus his reason for keeping the name SF 49ers. Even though North Bay 49er fan now has a 2 hour drive when the new Yorkie World Stadium/Amusement Park opens. I'd love to see the Raiders build one in Brisbane, and still call themselves the Oakland Raiders.

I spent 6 years making the trip up from San Jose when I worked as a ticket taker (and even before that gig when I just came up to catch the game), the SF/North Bay'ers should manage to survive the 1-2 hour commute 8-10x/year to watch some football in better weather and brand new stadium. ;)Seriously though, SF had their chance to keep the 49ers up there, but they blew it. And besides, their headquarters and training facility during the season is going to be literally right next door to where they will actually play the games. You can't ask for a better atmosphere to practice.

Yeah, I'd like to see what Kaepernick could do given some extensive playing time which in reality may not happen this year if Alex Smith is winning games. I guess if it's working don't fix it. The only way we'd see Kaepernick for any time would be an injury to Smith or he's just awful, neither of which I'd like to see even if I'm not a Smith supporter but I am a 9ers fan. Harbaugh likes Josh Johnson and really wanted to bring him on so there's the possibility that Johnson could see the field before Kaep. If Smith keeps winning I'll back him but we're still gonna have to put points on the board and not force the D to bail us out. Not that they're bailing us out anyway, they're good and showing it. The offense needs to open up and not be afraid to make plays. Look at the Saints/Niners game last year. We certainly had to put up points to win and we did which shows we can. Yet we need to do that on a more consistant basis rather than just when we need the points to win. If we could score at least 25 pts. a game I'd say we'd have a good shot at winning games with the D we have. I'd like to see a bunch of 30+ points a game but don't wanna get greedy but 1/2 dozen 30pts. plus would be a big help in getting us to our goals.

John York didn't have the know how to not only run an NFL Franchise, but deal with any City officials, and ran with his tail between his legs to SC. Even then if he was the one spearheading the final push for the SC stadium, he would lose that too. Even Andy Dolich couldn't make it happen faster. He was hired to help push the Stadium. The City didn't like York. Nobody does. He's an idiot. If Larry Ellison owned the team there would be a Stadium in SF. Years ago, Brisbane offered them all that land between freeways, right by the Bayshore CalTrain station. For cheap, almost free. They still didn't bite because they couldn't get any $$ from Brisbane to help them out, because they Brisbane is not in the County of SF, where they still had a shot at the bond $$ from Eddie D's Dead Voter campaign (helps to have Willie Brown in your back pocket, something John York couldn't do with Gavin Newsome). For years even during the Dynasty the 49ers had no problem playing at the Stick winning the division year after year, winning Super Bowls, etc., with the practice facility in Santa Clara. They had no problem holding major press conferences at the Fairmont on Nob Hill. Now, they will hold pretty much everything in San Jose, thus they should be called the San Jose 49ers. But Jed will never do that, since like his Daddy, he doesn't have the balls to admit they moved the team. Lulx at South Bay fan claiming they have the right too. Like the 49ers would have been born in San Jose. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

It's not just about points, it's about the poor RZ and 3rd down offense. They can't get away with that next season, and Smith will have even more pressure on him to improve. He may have hit his ceiling already. But this time he doesn't have the excuse of not having weapons. Tim Rattay threw 10 tds in 2004 on a piss poor team with nobody at WR and Eric Johnson at TE and no Frank Gore, with a bottom ranked defense . Smith tossed 17 tds last season.

I would like to see the niners put in some kind of zone/read package with Kaepernick and James in the red zone. Given Tebow's success in the red zone last season, you'd have to expect this as one solution to their red zone woes.

If they had gotten Dalton, I would have been way less bitter, and even be OK with they moving to San Jose in the next few years. Well, I will never be OK with they moving to San Jose. Just happy with Dalton at QB.
Nothing makes moving to San Jose OK. Southbay sucks. :hot:
Well according to Jed logic, the South Bay is still the Bay Area, thus his reason for keeping the name SF 49ers. Even though North Bay 49er fan now has a 2 hour drive when the new Yorkie World Stadium/Amusement Park opens. I'd love to see the Raiders build one in Brisbane, and still call themselves the Oakland Raiders.
I spent 6 years making the trip up from San Jose when I worked as a ticket taker (and even before that gig when I just came up to catch the game), the SF/North Bay'ers should manage to survive the 1-2 hour commute 8-10x/year to watch some football in better weather and brand new stadium. ;) Seriously though, SF had their chance to keep the 49ers up there, but they blew it. And besides, their headquarters and training facility during the season is going to be literally right next door to where they will actually play the games. You can't ask for a better atmosphere to practice.

I personally think he could make some noise as a FF QB this year if given the reins. I'm not sure why you've already written him off, but to answer your question, I believe Landry Jones should be within range if the niners miss the playoffs this year.

Smith is what he is, but I don't ever envision Harbaugh pulling him in the middle of a game unless the niners are on a losing streak. I'm sure the 49ers brass will also want to see what they have in their 2nd round pick from last year. I just don't see Kaepernick riding the pine for the entire season again.

Brisbane is just right by the Stick. It's that big acreage of land between it and the foothills, which if you go further down those hills lead into South San Francisco. You'd know it because there is a huge SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO sign on one of those hills. Even though it's San Mateo County. But I guess if the Stadium was being built in Napa, you'd be ok with it, right?

Bayshore CalTrain station. Look it up. It's smack between Brisbane and the Stick. Closer to a stadium in the proposed area than the Stick even. I just want the Yorks to admit they finally moved the team, and raised the ticket prices as well. Using their logic as well as the York apologists', the Raiders can build one in the West Bay and still call themselves the Oakland Raiders. Heck, they could share they same stadium in SC and still call themselves the Oakland Raiders, right? If the Oakland A's moved to Fremont (which is not far from SC), would they still be the Oakland A's?

The San Jose 49ers doesn't sell. It would be the final nail in the coffin the Yorks built. That's why Jed is trying to convince 49er fan that they are still the SF 49ers. Even though in 2000 whatever they won't be.

ETA: for anybody wondering where Santa Clara is:

If James can add a Sproles/bush like dimension to the passing game, it'd help Alex a lot. That would give the offense the potential to get some big plays out of the dump offs that are now usually a wasted play. We know Alex isn't throwing anyone open, so some big time YAC out of the backfield would really get things moving. I didn't see a lot of evidence that Hunter can be that kind of explosive back, and I just don't think Gore has it in him at this point.

Even better: They should move to the same stadium, and call themselves the San Francisco Raiders.

Hey, if the Anaheim Angels can name themselves Los Angeles Angels while not being in LA (city or county), the Niners can call themselves the SF 49ers and not be in SF!
The Angels still play in the same stadium since the late 60's. Before they were the California Angels, they were the Los Angeles Angels. Then again, the LA Rams moved to Anaheim, but a lot of LA people called them the Anaheim Rams. Until they moved to STL.
Well, they initially played in Dodger Stadium in LA for 3 years before moving to Anaheim and kept the name. Since moving they have been the LA Angels, CA Angles, Anaheim Angels and now LAAA. I guess SF could go through a similar progression after moving to SC. :banned: :boxing:
They could become the Golden State 49ers!

Quarterback Alex Smith has made "dramatic improvements" to his throwing motion, according to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. Part of those strides can be attributed to Smith's visit to motion specialist Tom House over a month ago.

"Alex was using his head where he'd have a late posture change to get his release point accurate," House, a former major league pitcher, said Friday in a phone interview.

Smith's previous shoulders injuries, House believes, caused him to compensate for a lack of strength, and Smith would move his head to the left as his arm accelerated.

Smith spent a week under House's tutelage at USC with fellow quarterbacks Carson Palmer, Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. Using 3-D video and slowing it down to a 1,000 frames a second, the quarterbacks would take two-step drops so House could analyze weak links in their motions.

As for the company Smith kept, House said: "It was kind of cool because it became a sandlot for quarterbacks. They learned from each other."

Harbaugh was pleased Smith worked on his mechanical issues through House's video and other methods. In the past four weeks of offseason drills on the 49ers fields, Smith has continued to work on his throwing motion, along with his footwork and ball position.

"I'm finally able to take advantage of this time and go after some things mechanically and fundamentally that I've been doing or things I've adapted that aren't good," Smith said Thursday.
Glad it only took 6 years to think of doing something like this :P

Per Mapquest:SF to SC: 73 miles, one and a half hours drive time?Boston to Foxborough: 30 miles (40 minutes). I've done that drive many times, seems longer & further, but anyway.......so one team (New England Pats, no longer Boston Pats) suddenly became regional and the other does not?If you actually live in SF (or an immediate suburb) with game day traffic, how much time do you expect you will actually spend just driving to the game and back?
