I'll be at Game 1, first row third baseline. Will have a "Wooderson likes to dress as a woman" sign.

A's win this easily, not even sure why I'm interested.

Elias: #Athletics first team in history to overcome a 5-game deficit with no more than 9 games remaining on schedule to win outright.

The #Athletics came back from 13 down to be #ALWestChamps. FROM ELIAS: Only 2 teams have overcome bigger deficits to finish in 1st.

Rangers spent 178 days in first. White Sox 126 days. Chicago out of the playoffs. Texas into single-game knockout Wild Card.

a's rally from 13 back, & from 5 back w/ 9 to play. incredible. '78 yanks had huge stars, '51 giants had signs.

#Athletics have spent exactly one day in sole possession of first place - today

The A's won 74 games last year, TRADED THEIR TWO BEST STARTERS FOR PROSPECTS, & won 94 games and the AL West. But sure, Moneyball's a fad.

Amazing. RT: @AmPressAlexH: The A's and Astros were both 22-31 on June 1. Just let that sink in and explode your brain.

The A's were 100 to 1 to win the AL West at the All Star break at the Las Vegas Hotel (via @golfodds)

A's 82-46 w/ Cespedes starting, 12-22 when not starting. Tool shed everyone saw. Background work on makeup, intelligence astute, brilliant

#Rangers led AL West 178 days. #Athletics only lead today. That's like NFL team winning time of possession 59 minutes to 1, and losing game

Oakland is the only post-season participant of the 10 MLB clubs who never had a starter get to 120+ pitches in 2012 @baseballpro
My linkI'll add two, A's started the season with baseball's lowest payroll at $53mm and the A's were projected to win 72 games by Baseball Prospectus.

Balfour cracked me up today...loved it, he's nuts. Go A's. Always been a sort of closet A's fan and kicking myself for not taking them a few months ago at long odds. I took the Angels instead. :bag:

Yeah, it really is stupid. 162 games is also dumb, tradition be damned. How do you get excited about a game you're at that means so little?

JV probably gets two starts. Advantage Detroit.

Miguel Cabrera, triple crown winner and MVP runner-up. Advantage Detroit.

132 million vs. 55 million. Advantage Detroit.

Oakland didn't expect to be there, super loose and relaxed, and has the feeling of "THAT ####### team."

Good pitching beats good hitting. Oakland in 5.

Agree here, and with the rest of the folks in the thread. Tigers simply relieved to be in the playoffs and shouldn't put up much of a fuss. A's are looking like a team of destiny, cliche as it is to say that. Without a doubt their magical run will continue and carry them to the next round before any other team advances in these playoffs. It seems like a foregone conclusion to me but I'll watch just to appreciate their gritty and admirable style of play.A's in four.

Some sorted team hitting stats.

Oakland:

-550 BB's

-1387 K's :o

-.310 OBP

-Only 2 hitters with averages over .270.

Detroit:

-511 BB's

-1103 K's

-.335 OBP

-7 hitters with averages over .270.

Oakland is more patient at the plate...for better or worse. I'm still not sure how they won that many games. They must put together some timely hitting.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Pat Neshek said that his newborn son has died.

The right-hander posted on his Twitter account late Wednesday night that he and his wife lost their first child 23 hours after his birth “with no explanation.” He asked for prayers, and words of support began flooding Twitter.

Neshek took a flight home to Florida to be at the birth of Gehrig John Neshek on Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to Pat and Stephanee and we share in their sorrow of losing their young son,” the A’s said. “The entire A’s organization will keep the Neshek family in our prayers and thoughts, as they try to come to grips with this tragic occurrence in their lives.”

Earlier in the day, the A’s swept the Texas Rangers to capture an improbable AL West title. Neshek had been away from the club for the final two games.

The 32-year-old Neshek, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in early August for cash considerations, was 2-1 for the A’s with a 1.37 ERA in 24 appearances and 19/2-3 innings.

Oakland's hitters were awful before June, so that weighs down their stats somewhat. Detroit surely still has them covered easily, but the June-Oct numbers would be closer. My impression (no stats to back it up) is that the A's do a good job of making you pay for walks. They also hit a lot of HRs.Should be a great series. Really looking forward to this one. No idea who will win, but I'm leaning Detroit because they've been there before.

Agree with this. Oakland does a lot well but nothing fantastic offensively and their season is divided into two distinct halves. Although the truth may fall somewhere in the middle, I tend to take the more recent (last two months) stats first.

:lmao: at so much in this thread. Love the subtitle.

Detroit is the last team I wanted to face. I think they're the hardest team in the AL playoffs for Oakland to beat. Between Verlander and Scherzer, this could get ugly. Oakland hits a lot of home runs but they swing at seemingly everything.

That said, I refuse to go the reverse jinx route. Gotta keep with my blind homer optimism. Here's hoping Anderson returns and Oakland's arms can keep doing what they've been doing. Oakland in 4.

But we've got Cabrera, who's so good he leads both leagues in BA.

If the A's take game 1, series over.

If the Tigers take game 1, anyone's ball game, but the A's best bet is to take 3 in a row.

If this series makes it 5 games I think it'd be foolish to bet against the Tigers.

A's will take this in four games as they are on a roll. The Tigers essentially backed in by way of a White Sox choke job. MVP Miggy is the wild card here. Best of luck and enjoy...

The 2-3 is not standard. Going back to 2-2-1 next year. Had something to do with lack of playoff days off due to jamming the one-day wild card in at the last moment.

Oakland's team was in a state of flux at the start of the season. We had Kurt Suzuki behind the plate with his Mendozian batting average. We cycled through piles of crap at first (Brandon Allen, Daric Barton, Kila). Jemile Weeks blew chunks for months. Pennington was horrid and when he got hurt it became painfully clear he was by far the best option Oakland had. Harry Potter was at third. Their outfield and DH were the only offensive constants. The entire infield was shuffled around several times. Things were so bad, Brandon Inge and 226 batting average/386 slugging percent weren't just an improvement, they were a massive improvement.

Brandon Moss and Chris Carter came up later. In 483 at bats between them, they slugged 37 home runs. That doesn't sound special for most teams, but Oakland's regular starter - Daric Barton - has 27 home runs in 1500+ career at bats.

While they're probably not going to be the powerhouse of the past 3 months forever, that's much closer to their 'true' talent than their record to start the year.

Oakland doesn't draw a lot of walks. They don't rack up a lot of hits. They're not particularly selective. They swing for the fences. Most of the time it's a strikeout. But when they make contact, the ball flies far. And when they do get runners on base they're aggressive on the basepaths. Since the ASB (easy split as prior to late June they were missing many current players), they're middle of the pack in batting average/obp. They have by far the most strikeouts. But they have the 4th best slugging percent, 10th most stolen bases, second most rbi's, and most home runs. And the 10th best era.

Should be a fun series.

Slusser says Anderson is ready to pitch and Parker will probably start game 1. I'll take it.

Last time I saw Detroit playing Oakland, Miggy was jogging around the bases after his grand slam.
whats really weird is that it was just 6 years ago, yet the Tigers only have 2 players left from that 2006 team, and one of them was Ramon Santiago who left n came back. Infante was on the 2006 team but was traded mid season so he wasnt on the playoff squad. Verlander is all that remains. Crazy the turn over of he roster in just 6 seasons

I digress. Good for you. When you and yer baseball love barge are holding hands up here watching better teams playing in the WS reality will sink in...

Gee- Miggy has been in the league for 10 years. A-Rod for 19. For a guy that has a carrer BA at .300 after 19 years with 3 MVPs (twice voted second in MVP) not too much of a stretch. It must be nice being an MVP that sucks with a mitt...
