***OFFICIAL Cincinnati Reds 2007 Thread*** (1 Viewer)

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 569th career homer Thursday, moving into a tie for ninth place with Rafael Palmeiro. Griffey has been on a tear since the Cincinnati Reds moved him back into his accustomed third spot in the order. The 37-year-old outfielder has hit safely in seven of those eight games, getting four of his six homers. He worked Houston's Matt Albers to a full count, then pulled the next pitch deep into the seats in right field. The two-run shot in the second inning put the Reds up 6-0. Albers is the 362nd pitcher to give up a homer to Griffey.

Encarnacion to AAA -- While his fielding is an issue and his bat has sucked, this isn't good. Hopefully it works. The kid is 24 and has been jerked around for two years now. On a team that's going absolutely nowhere with problems everywhere, put the kid there and let him play without having to worry whether he's in the lineup and if every bobbled ball gets him sent exactly where it did. Unless he looks like he just doesn't care in the locker room, this is stupidly short-sighted.

Can't wait to see what middle reliever we get for him.

Milton to DL -- Whatever. If this gets Bailey brought up, double whatever. No reason to push a promising prospect on this team right now.

On a brighter note, good for Junior. Stick it in every last hater's face baby.

Wow!! What a horrible over-reaction sending him down.As an Astros fan, I'd gladly give up Ensberg and anyone in our pen for him. Let's start a Lidge for Encarnacion rumor. Here's a funny take.
Reds optioned third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to Triple-A Louisville. And the Reds wonder why they're consistently a second-division team. Encarnacion is one of the team's best players, and the club is going to need him to bounce back if it has any chance of contending. Instead, it looks like he might be on the Austin Kearns path out of town. There should be several teams looking to find out just how much bullpen help it would take to acquire the 24-year-old. What are the odds Brandon Phillips goes 30/30? Seems like he's flying under the radar fantasy wise, but I have him and think he's right up there with some of the league's best 2b. There's an article on ESPN Insider about buying him now - as an owner of him, it'd be tough to sell him, that's for sure!

I have no problem with him being sent down. I think it helped Austin Kearns a couple of years back, when he had the same high expectations. In fact I think Kearns was sent down twice; the first time he wasn't happy with it, the second time he embraced it and used to his benefit. If EE uses it to his benefit, he could could come back and be the player we all hope he can be.

Disgusting managing job by Narron last night. 1st and 2nd, no outs and Adam Dunn on deck...

So let's try a sacrifice and if it works, the Dodgers then pitch around or IBB Dunn to face Castro...how in the hell is Castro protection for your 2nd best hitter on the team?!?

I loathe Jerry Narron!

Yeah, I thought that was a very poor decision myself. Sacrifice down by two? Why give away an out? And why start both Hopper & Castro over Keppinger?I had been cutting Narron a lot of slack just because the piling on by Reds fans was so over the top and for such specious reasons (i.e. lineup changes). But he's not managing very well the past few weeks. And he's killing his bullpen...which is in turn killing him.

Who's in charge of advance scouting? Kouzmanoff has been under .150 all year, and there's a reason. He wants to pull everything. So sliders away, right? Nope. It looked to me like everything he hit tonight was inside corner. The Reds weren't even bothering to work him down and away.

I thought that was peculiar.

Aaron Harang 120 pitches -- balks in the ninth inning after catching his foot on the mound; third time in five starts over 120 pitches

David Weathers 3 innings and 31 pitches to hold the fort until Griffey's homer.

Bronson Arroyo 129 pitches -- walks in winning run in the ninth inning after being unable to throw the ball accurately to third on a bunt play; this after previous two starts with 117 and 120 pitches

If you're manager isn't going to use your bullpen, then you sure as hell better fix it so that you don't over-extend your two primary pitching assets. I'll wager heavily that Harang and Arroyo pitch like Milton for the next couple of starts. This after Harang has struggled with consistency all year long.

I'm not a huge stickler for pitch counts in every situation with every pitcher but there's little question that very high pitch counts fatigue and stress the arm. If this team needed wins to contend, fine.

But I'll say it for the fourth time in this thread. This team is going NOWHERE in 2007. Stop screwing with the future of those you'll need in 2008 and beyond this season.

Just wanted to bump this for any local update on Hamilton. Will he return to the lineup tonight? He's been pretty solid at home this year so I still think he's a good start (wash and pitt this week).

I'd also like some info on this. He's been diagnosed with gastroenteritis I believe. Is this something that could keep him out long term?

If the diagnosis is truly gastroenteritis, that's just the medical term for a stomach bug. Those can be serious enough to cause abdominal pain worrisome for other causes and obviously dehydration. If it was just a bad viral illness, he'll be back when he gets his strength back. The note from the beat writers this weekend that he was sent back to be seen by another doctor is a little concerning. Nothing new in the local rags this afternoon.

Hamilton is going to the DL today, and Edwin is rejoining the team. Sorry, no link yet.
Stupid Thom Brennaman. Shoulda known not to listen to that goof. Sorry RR, just reporting what I heard.I'm not sure I like a DL trip for "gastroenteritis". Tingles the spidey senses. Hope it's not more serious than that.

No apologies necessary. It was a good scoop. He even pleaded with Narron to pinch hit last night. Now all of a sudden he's DL'd? That's the connection I'm not making. That said: I've heard his ailment hurts like a ##### so I'm tongue in cheek in calling him a #####.

Well, it certainly doesn't sound like it's anything worrisome. This team still apparently feels it can compete at some point this year, so maybe it's just that the team is sick of playing Norris Hopper. But it seems silly to shelve Hamilton for another eight days if he could return in three. There are intestinal problems associated with current, chronic, and former drug use. I hope it isn't related to any of that. Just smells a little is all.

I haven't seen it posted officially yet but I have to believe it will be something like this tonight...

Freel

Gonzales

Griffey

Phillips

Conine

Dunn

Edwin

Ross

I really think Edwin will get to relax and settle into a groove at the plate now that Phillips and Conine/Hatty have pushed him lower in the order.

What the ####?

Why is Stanton still on this ####ing roster today but Coffey isn't? Just cut that old fat ******* and be done with it.

Way to lay that bunt down, Conine.

Seriously.. so many spurned Reds in the Nationals' lineup I think the past three days was just a wicked twist of karma.

I was looking for a vomit emoticon but could not find one. There is no excuse for pitching to be this bad. Fire somebody and hire someone else, NOW!!!

Well, in hindsight Aaron Harang is probably the kind of body that can handle starts over 115 pitches but it shouldn't be any surprise that Arroyo is struggling. Plenty of speculation in the Cincinnati media that the 129 pitch outing is to blame.I'll say it again. If the Reds have elevated Arroyo's injury risk for the sake of one stupid game in May on a going-nowhere team, it's a horrid use of resources and the coaching staff/front office should be getting even more heat than they already are.

Josh Hamilton returns today to full time duty in CF. I did not activate him for this week but will be keeping an eye on him.

Any reason? I would think if you're ever going to use him, this is the week.

Well, 1) he's coming off an injury that took so much out of him they had to DL him and he hasn't played for x many days. He didn't do a rehab stint either, correct? 2) @ St. Louis and home vs. Cleveland is okay but he hasn't shown he can really hit on the road yet. Coming back cold like this, I just decided to leave him on the bench and wait and see. He wasn't doing anything pre-injury anyway.

Oh he did a rehab stint all right. He tore up AAA to the tune of a 350 AVG, four home runs and two SB in five games. He's plenty okay.I'm trying to stay out of this thread because this team seriously pisses me off. Hamilton could've joined the team yesterday to play in Colorado, instead they left him in Louisville. And I'm real impressed that they've targeted one of the best offensive teams in baseball in front of a sold out home crowd to debut Homer Bailey, BTW. Real impressed.

I wish you would stay out of the thread. Your negativity is really getting to me Mr Bramel.

Here are a few things that make me happy.I'm really looking forward to a future outfield of Josh Hamilton, Jay Bruce and Joey Votto. They should form a solid core with Brandon Phillips and hopefully Encarnacion.I can't wait to see what Homer can do.I'm happy Encarnacion decided to give the staff the finger, even if it makes them look smart.I still think the team's proactive re-signing of Harang and Arroyo at a decent cost was a great move. This team is well on its way to a very juicy 2008 draft pick. There, now I'm Mr. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++.

Reds just made another spot open on the 40 man roster today, so it's down to 38.

May be a big trade in the works.

Hey Reds fans! Can somebody give me the scoop on the best places to park at the new field. I'm coming up from KY...first trip since they built the new park. Somebody said that it's best to park on the river in Newport and walk across a bridge??? Anybody got any tips?

Just park where you would have parked for Riverfront. Plenty of garages in the area. Most convenient: garage at 3rd and Walnut, $10.Cheapest: I think the Western and Southern garage is $2. Or you could park at Willie's in Covington and take their bus over.

 The KY thing...You can park at Newport on the Levee and walk across that bridge. Been a few months since I've been there but I don't think it's higher than $5 and it may be less. You can also park for free on the streets of Covington (there's a nice residential neighborhood north of 4th street up to Riverside Drive between the Licking River and the Suspension Bridge that you can often find a place to leave your car) and walk over the bridge. That's a fairly long, but scenic walk.

Thanks guys! I'm excited, haven't been to a Reds game in 7 or 8 years.

I think if the Reds are up after the 6th I'm leaving so I don't have to watch the bullpen blow another one and I can go home thinking we won!

Milton likely out for the rest of the season.

Does anyone know how many more years the Reds have him under contract?

Milton to have season-ending elbow surgery

June 11, 2007

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Reds pitcher Eric Milton is scheduled to have reconstructive elbow surgery Friday, almost certainly ending his season.

It's possible the left-hander will never throw another pitch for the Reds. He can become a free agent when his $25.5 million, three-year contract expires this fall.

Milton was 0-4 with a 5.17 ERA in six starts this season. He went on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left elbow on May 9, the second consecutive year he was hampered by elbow problems. Milton had season-ending surgery to clean out the same elbow last Sept. 22.

This year, Milton told the team about his sore elbow after he pitched 5 1-3 innings in a 7-6 loss to Houston on May 8. Tests the next day detected inflammation.

Team spokesman Rob Butcher said Monday he didn't know when doctors determined that Milton had a damaged ligament in his elbow and would require Tommy John surgery.

The 31-year-old Milton is 16-27 with Cincinnati since signing with the Reds before the 2005 season. He gave up an NL-leading 40 homers that year.
