Yep.  I have no real problem with vaccine passports if they're processed efficiently.  If they put through a hassle, I'm opposed.  

I really wish policy makers would take that under advisement.  I feel like I'm at least within sight of the median voter on this issue.  If you're going to implement vaccine requirements, please just do it in an efficient manner that essentially eliminates the hassle factor.  That's not too much to ask, given that you're asking for an unprecedented level of access to my medical records.

I like how the virus sorta sits back, watches how the world reacts to it then adapts and says, "okay, I see the opening and I'm taking it." First it was attacking the unvax'd (still is) but has decided to go after kids now too. We start to get a handle on that (or not) and the virus comes up with a more transmissible variant.

At some point it will run it's course but unfortunately a lot of people are going to die before that happens. It will run out of viable hosts as it works through the unvaccinated population but there are still a lot of those folks here in the US and even more out in the world. We are far from this being over and there will still be piles of bodies unless we get our #### together or science comes up with a way to stop it in its tracks.

Covid-19 isn't going to "run its course" or "get stopped in its tracks."  It's very likely to become endemic, which means it's going to live indefinitely and circulate throughout the human population.  Just like a handful of other coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, and other pathogens.

People need to get over the idea of eradicating SARS-CoV-2.  That just isn't going to happen.  Vaccines essentially turn SARS-CoV-2 into just another cold virus, and I'm starting to feel pretty confident that that's the end game here.

My terminology was off, it won't go away but as you said it will, eventually, be reduced to common cold type thing. That's what I meant, thanks for cleaning it up for me  :thumbup:

 
I'm starting to see people on Facebook say it's not a vaccine, it's a shot.

I guess in their mind a vaccine prevents the virus forever like polio vaccine. And a shot you need to take once a year like the flu shot. 

Yes, I realize they're both vaccines but maybe @Ministry of Pain was on to something and in order to reach these simpleton it should've been marketed as "get your covid shot". 

I dunno. Grasping at straws here.

It’s a vaccine. Just like the flu vaccine. Just like measles, mumps, rubella.

People need to get over themselves, listen, and learn. Tired of having to dumb this down for people who don’t want to deal with the truth.

There was a NYT podcast back in May (I think) that basically made this same point. Because the virus has shown to mutate so rapidly, we would have to get somewhere north of 90% vaccinated to get near herd immunity. We are clearly not going to get close to that number. The scientists they had on were talking about how this is going to cycly through for decades.

Our shot was a year and a half ago when we were told to shelter in place for two weeks.

Our shot was wearing masks and social distancing just a little while longer.

Our shot was getting all eligible adults to take the vaccine as soon as possible.

We lost.  The virus won.  There are/will be too many mutations to contain it now.

There hasn't been a meaningful mutation in several months.  The reality is there have been just two sustained international level mutations.  

 
90 percent of NYC Asian teens age 13 to 17 are fully vaccinated -- far outpacing other adolescent groups: Hispanics (38 percent), whites (32 percent), African-Americans (24 percent).

That is the end game and the clear strategy in the United States.  Some other countries are going for 0% COVID, but that won't last.

The population and individuals will continually build up immunity to COVID-19 and its variants through vaccination/boosters and exposure and this will eventually be like a cold/flu that sucks but is dealt with in the normal course of business.  Hopefully having a faster immune response eliminates the long-covid.

We have to remember that the reason why this coronavirus hits us harder than the others that circulate and cause us colds is because our systems never saw it before and could not react fast enough to keep infection from spreading to organs.

So like giving people the actual message and then letting decisions be made instead of trying to anticipate how they react and then frame advice from there? 

If only public health worked this way. 

 
My SIL drove my son to Target yesterday and she just tested positive today. She's fully vaxxed. Guess I'll get him tested in a few days.

She was Moderna and has been fully vaccinated since end of March.

She got tested because she was a close contact with COVID positive person (I'm not sure who or when she found out). She has no symptoms.

We never had a shot. 

Even if everybody in the US stayed home 100% for two weeks in the beginning, we would be right back here. 

Long term mitigation should have always been the only course of action. Vaccines, building modifications, more outdoors, etc. 

I wont get into this much in here for obvious political reasons, but the way everything has been handled by playing favorites with so many decisions caused battle lines to be drawn. That should have always been obvious. 

 
What are the chances a fully vaxxed asymptomatic person can spread covid?

My theory is vaxxed people are spreading this like wildfire because they don't realize they have it.

Without symptoms, my guess is there may be a short window before their immune system kicks in and controls the viral load that they can more readily spread it. I don't think we have those numbers, though. That would be difficult to study at this point without the ability to do rigorous contact tracing.

Just have your son quarantine and hopefully he can test negative in a few days and end the quarantine. Check with your doctor or schools and see what they are recommending for the timeframe on those things. It changes and varies from place to place.

I don't even think it needs to be asymptomatic.  Lots of vaccinated people will get a cold/minor symptoms and keep on trucking.  Can't say that I blame them.  I'm not proposing that we implement mandatory testing for everyone or anything but that's what it would most likely take to try and keep the case numbers really low - that and people willing to quarantine.

It would be great to know exactly how close to 90% of folks with anitbodies we have in some areas.

This is why I'd check with your doctor/school before deciding when to test. You may not even need to.

You may be able to shorten your quarantine

Your local public health authorities make the final decisions about how long quarantine should last, based on local conditions and needs. Follow the recommendations of your local public health department if you need to quarantine. Options they will consider include stopping quarantine

After day 10 without testing

After day 7 after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later)

It is entertaining to see the logistical hurdles the anti-vax crowd are going through to push the "Vaxxed folks can get it and spread it too!!!!1!" 

Yes, it can happen.. much less likely than properly vaccinated folks, but it can happen. 

However, imagine a world where we are 100% vaxxed. This would essentially be a common cold circulating at this point. Nearly ANYONE who got it would basically get the sniffles (if anything), then be on their way. 

Currently the bulk of the precautions are really there to protect the holdouts... because in most cases they're the folks ending up in hospitals and dying. 

Once we have a plan in place to immunize/protect kids (and elderly/immunocompromised), and regular boosters sorted....  I'd honestly probably be all for going full open / no restrictions and just let all the anti-vax folks get sick and/or die off.

The only thing holding me back is the burden it would place on healthcare resources. :(

Imagine a world where we are 100% vaxxed.

Hypothetical number of people in the ICU = 6.

Would we rather have 50 people in the ICU, or 6?

Hey friend, we're having a hard time on this, happy to PM with you, but that's really again just some fluff, its a list of hospital CEOs, what other stance are they going to take publicly so they can continue to raise money?

I work in a philanthropy at a hospital, I'm not sure where you want to go with this. The CEO at the hospital is a complete baffoon where I am, wouldn't listen to a word he said about much at all. but then again i have a lot of inside info on him and most of the FL CEOs at the Hospitals, I'm a friend of John Couris(Smart Dude), that's the CEO of Tampa General Hospital and former Jupiter Medical Center CEO in South Florida, arguably the largest hospital network in the State of Florida...

I get that it feels good to try and 1-up me(MoP) but I'm afraid even though you work in a children's hospital yourself, this is blatantly trying to tug on heart strings of folks who are debating what to do. It's called Sales and Marketing, it's a good thing to have at your fingertips but in my world of fellow hospital CEOs that I know personally it matter very little, I'm sorry to burst your bubble. 

-They did an all hands on deck at the hospital we work at/with and they did one of these "biggest names on the TV" encouraging getting the CV-19 shot but again it doesn't matter to the folks who are not participating.

-Also you think I'm not on your side, that's not true but I disagree with the game plan and play calling. That letter you produced is 3 n out, PUNT! It doesn't advance the needle into the red zone.  :no:

Good Luck, I know you're trying to do right but it feels a lot more like a crusade than science IMHO.

It should be marketed to at least part of the general public as a flu shot and one that you WILL need another in as little as 8 months, just be clear about it and I think people will take to it that have been slow to move. 

It's a flu shot that needs a booster in about 8 months and maybe half as long if you have diabetes or pre-exist. 

You won't DIE doesn't get skinny fit people into the vaccination chambers I'm afraid, many of them think they are immune already because they take care of themselves and their bodies meticulously, not in the way many of us even those who think they're healthy, some of these alpha-humans out there think they are living organic tress growing out of the ground at this point. 

 
Overweight fat doctors telling people 20 and 30 years younger than them, very healthy patients with zero pre-existing conditions to boot(they should be asking the doctors to hop up on the table)...maybe we need to think about a new-sub doctor world or professionals that just see mostly healthy people and they themselves are from that community and can better identify with the needs of healthier people who take their health seriously, seems unfair to those that sacrificed and actually put in the work. They might be called Nutritionists but they seem better qualified to deal with NON SICK people.

I had one of those in Santa Monica, CA near Father's Office, big dude like 325 all day but somehow managed to carry it around pretty well. 

I see your point but I think when it comes to diet and exercise, you want an overweight out of shape person directing you around the gym? I think it's hilarious what you wrote but it doesn't quite connect over to medical professionals.

How do the hospitals make money when they have mostly empty beds? Vs what they have now where they overflow almost. The hospitals are making record dollars. 

We raised around $10M a year when we got here 4-5 years ago for the hospital, we just broke $50M this last year without any in person fund raisers which is ridiculous. Hospitals are making bank right now IMHO. 

But yes it would be nice if everyone were healthy and wearing slim pants around. Wouldn't be so many sick people for sure. 

 
We were called by the principal last week to inform us our daughter was in close contact with a positive person and we had to provide proof of vaccination so she could come back to school the next day.. Sunday night she started a sore throat and not feeling well. We kept her home Monday as a precautionary measure. She seemed better this morning, but when she got to school today and was struggling to sing during choir, they sent her home "with Covid-;like symptoms". She has a sore throat and runny nose, but no other symptoms. However, ,I am sure the school is going to want some reassurances before we send her back, so I got one of those Binax home kits to try.. The rapid testing sites around us are either booked or $200 a pop for instant results 

Anyone have any tips on using these kits? I got tested last year when I had a scare and it seemed like the tech put the  Qtip through my eye socket. This test only has the person put it in 1/2 of an inch and just swab the immediate nasal cavity on both sides and you get results in 15 minutes.

Fwiw.... We used a binax in conjunction with pcr, and they all "matched".... I posted somewhere in here and they have good accuracy for the most part, but that was pre Delta. I think fals positive are more likely, not 100% sure anymore

 I took one of these Saturday myself (was running a low fever...negative!). The test you got was a different swab. This one just goes like you said to the top of your nasal cavity. Made my eyes water a bit but wasn't too bad. Got plenty of a sample. Just make sure you do the exact number of drops it says for the reagent and make sure it's on a flat surface. Good luck! Hope she feels better soon.
