So there are three Hillstrand bros and the two switch being captain. The other one basically just spanks it, right? And the third is sometimes on deck but a lot in the wheelhouse, right?

Sig has 2 brothers working on the Northwestern?
Yes, He doesn't want to be filmed or miced up though. They tried to get him to do or say something either in season one or two and he just kept working.
:goodposting: This is why they never show the engine room in the Northwestern
I think he takes over driving the boat a lot. Has to. Otherwise who would do it? That boat is already so light staffed as is.

The third Hillstrand is the engineer just like the third Hansen brother is on the Northwestern

Right, but many of the engineers on the other boats are also on deck.

Boy, a rough couple of weeks. Haven't cared for ATC either. I thought the tribute to Capt. Phil was done pretty well last night. Still in shock he was only 53. He looked 67. Living life in the fast lane.

Looks like Phil's passing will push Edgar over the edge to leave.

It has gotten dusty in the room while watching the last couple weeks.

Those pictures of Phil when he was a young hell-raiser kept reminding me of this dude.

And God Bless him for looking right into the camera and saying he'd spend the money on hookers...with a smile. :lmao:

It was tough to see Phil cough up blood and turn to the camera crew and told them to not say anything to his kids. The camera guy even said, "Why" to Phil as if he knew that was not good either. The camera guys should have done something though.

That was like 2 seasons back, and he ended up going to the Dr. and sitting out one KC season.

How awkward was it when Sig went to visit the Cornilia and didn't know Phil had passed, just brutal silence.

Yeah, the way he was joking around and stuff prior made it worse, he was in a great mood. The cameraman/staff must've known prior. The part where he realizes it before he's told was heavy.

I think the only time we've ever seen the third brother was in the last episode in the arm-wrestling match with Jake.

Pretty sure the 3rd Hansen brother works on the deck in their rotation. He just doesn't want to be on camera. I don't even think he would sign a waiver at first, but must have signed one since as he's actually "been filmed" and been on the show. I'm sure they respect his wishes for privacy as much as possible. I think one of the only times I saw him this season was when Sig was breaking the news about Phil's death... besides some random times on deck when I knew he wasn't one of the other 4, no face being shown.

Phil seems like a guy every person would have dreamed to have known. I'm sure lots of guys sound that way when they're discussed upon passing, but his story is very believable to me. Some guys get ticked off when people move up the ranks quickly, but watching his life story on the latest show, it seems like everyone around just said, "Yep, we didn't think it would take long." That section of the story just said a lot to me about his character, even if it was embellished, I'm sure.

I've always been a fan of the Northwestern, watching all seasons. I always liked the Time Bandit 2nd because of the entertainment value, but then learned the guys were abrasive in real life (I think I put that nicely... considering their public appearances I've heard about). Lately, even before Phil's sickness, I started to really love the father/son interaction on that boat with the Hawaiian badass, Freddie, who seems like the best guy on any boat to me. Those are probably my top 3. Keith is finally growing on me a bit, but I still think he's a tool... mostly.

Of all the "reality shows" that have been on, I think Phil's death is the only one to happen during a season of filming. I know way back in the 90's a guy from The Real World died, I think from AIDS but that was after the show. Anyway, Phil's death seems to be hitting some people hard and I cannot still believe it either.

As far as reality shows go, which other show do you really get to know the people being filmed, not personally but at least on a professional level? Most of the shows are only 13/14 episodes long so we don't ever really know any of them. Shows like the Pawn shop, forget the name right now, don't really show us who those people are. At least Deadliest Catch chronicles something and something of interest no less.

I have always thought I would like to rewatch shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race but those are or have become kind of vanilla shows. Deadliest Catch, again, at least chronicles or documents something. That is what makes it good. I don't think they have them on DVD but I would love to watch from season one since I have only watched sporadically throughout the run.

The Offshore Adventure crew(s) who are now doing the Great White Expedition have been fun to follow in a similar fashion. When I buy lottery tickets, I think about living Chris Fischer's life, mostly. At best, I'm only going to live something somewhat similar through fantasy and mostly in retirement. Chris and Brett kept their families at a relatively uninvolved distance though besides Chris's wife in the early going. The emotional toll on them was in no way comparable to the stress the Bering Sea guys go through, actually more to the exact opposite. There is a connection, but only the fact that Fishcer and crew bought/retrofitted a retired crab boat.

Right, but many of the engineers on the other boats are also on deck.
He just got pulled of the deck I think last season. He was a deck guy and his 2 bros said that's enough and you are now "owner/engineer".

Admittedly I don't follow Andy and Jonathon, but have a hard time believing that they are not nice guys off the boat. They seem like good guys on the boat.

I read a few fishing forums and have seen such posted more than once. Going off memory, at least 3 of the stories started with, "they were obviously drunk" and involved them just being a bit too rowdy for the setting (booth at a boat show, autograph signing, etc.).lol @ :link:

:link: what a cluster####

They have been filming all week at Pratty's bar here in Gloucester. Tonight is their last hoorah there as the bar is still closed to the public except for those with the golden ticket to get in. I saw them every day this week between 1-2 after I got out of work and they were either hung over or still quite intoxicated. They were quite rude with some people who showed up to meet them or get pictures. I also went to their hotel late one night and hung out for a while watching them stagger around the court yard. Johnathan is one abnoxious self centered jack ### who stays drunk and nose powdered up. Oh yeah, and they still don't take baths because the stinch was sickening. Johnathan made some really crude comments about the female fans, (he totally hates plus size women) :link: for some reason he thinks he worthy of playboy type women or just a good looking one at that. It's a shame some of their wives don't know about all the strippers and hookers they have been with this past week, however, I did manage to get a few photo's before I left. All in all, Keith was about the only decent one or at least he wasn't caught doing something. I was really a fan of the show and these guy's until this past week. What a bunch of drunken drugged out losers. I'm sure they have more "crabs" than they catch....

And to those of you who are "in love" with Jonathan, these guy's are so different when they are at events, signings, etc. but if you're lucky enough to hang out with them after all the public scenes, then you will see how un-lucky you become. Johnathan is by far the worst, most disgusting poor excuse of a man. Hanging with them lost me as a fan which sucks because I really liked the show, but, now I know better

The other Hansen is probably the engineer.

I'm guessing this was written by a fat chick who has since torn up and burned her Jonathan posters.

lol, the one I read was in reference to the Miami boat show. 70% sure. It wasn't much different. I think they even got into a shouting match with the fans before being asked to leave in one.Anyone can have a bad day, but after reading similar stuff to this and watching the way they handle certain situations on the Time Bandit, I can see how they could clash with people at some of these places.

Melissa Fischer was always on Offshore Adventure, along with baby Sarah.

Yep, I remember the early episodes where Melissa was on every one, then some with baby Sarah. Eventually her appearances tapered off.

I'm pretty sure this show is on borrowed time now. Even knowing the end, last season was riveting. Not sure how another season could be more interesting than that.

RIP Phil.

I have to think the next season would be the last. They also keep changing the fishing regs year to year and at some point it just won't make sense for boats smaller than the wizard to go out.

Looks like everybody is back on board...

Deadliest Catch Captains Return

I am pleased that Discovery Channel and the Captains of the FV Northwestern and FV Timebandit have worked out their differences. According to this article by the Hollywood Reporter, the Captains state, “We’re happy we worked everything out with Discovery. A deal’s a deal. We’re heading up to Dutch Harbor to start filming the new season of ‘Deadliest Catch’ and hopefully it will be the best one yet.”

So, with that behind us, the fishermen can get on with doing what they know best – catching King Crab!

The FV Cornelia Marie is now in Dutch Harbor. We have a tremendous amount of work to do before the King Crab opening on October 15th. I’ll keep you update as we quickly approach the season opener.

From Discovery:

Statement from Captains Sig Hansen and Johnathan & Andy HillstrandOctober 8, 2010Statement Released from Captains Sig Hansen and Johnathan & Andy Hillstrand:"We're happy we worked everything out with Discovery. A deal's a deal. We're heading up to Dutch Harbor to start filming the new season of DEADLIEST CATCH and hopefully it will be the best one yet."The Hillstrands added: "Everyone worked really hard on putting together HILLSTRANDED and we're looking forward to wrapping that up. It's something new that we hope people will enjoy."

Watched this for the first time last night. I knew fishing was a dangerous job but never realized the extent.

Also, God bless the Coast Guard. What those guys do is amazing.

Time Bandit engineer found dead. I don't actually remember seeing him on the show.

'Deadliest Catch' boat crew member found dead

By Alan Duke, CNN

February 23, 2011 6:04 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A crew member of a fishing vessel seen on the "Deadliest Catch" reality show was found dead in a Homer, Alaska, hotel room Tuesday, police said.

Justin Tennison, 33, died of "unknown causes," but his body was flown to Anchorage, Alaska, for an autopsy, according to a statement from the Homer, Alaska, Police Department.

Police and paramedics were called to Homer's Best Western Bidarka Inn Tuesday afternoon after Tennison's body was found, police said.

Tennison served as an engineer on board the Time Bandit during two recent fishing seasons, according to a statement on the boat's website.

"Justin was tough as a bull and was an all-around good hand," the boat's Capt. Johnathan Hillstrand said. "The captains and crew appreciated his hard work and many contributions this past year."

He is survived by a son, daughter, sister, father and grandparents, according to the statement.

Tennison's is the second death in a year among the Discovery Channel show's cast.

Capt. Phil Harris, the tattooed and gruff captain of the Cornelia Marie, died a year ago of complications from a stroke suffered while his crew offloaded crab at St. Paul Island, Alaska. He was 53.

This would be the guy Captain Keith of the Wizard tried to lure away.

Missed this a couple weeks back...

New 'Deadliest Catch' season features familiar faces, new boats

USA Today

March 3, 2011

After last year's heartbreaking season, Deadliest Catch will return next month with new shows and high-seas action. The icy waters of the Bering Sea remain the same, and many familiar faces will be back, but some new boats are joining the dangerous fishing action, too.

In the shadow of their father's death, Josh and Jake Harris (shown here) will carry on Capt. Phil Harris' work, showing the rest of the fleet they can make it as co-owners of the Cornelia Maria.

On the Time Bandit, Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand are center stage again, while Capt. Sig Hansen returns on the Northwestern ship. Captain Keith Colburn will venture into uncharted fishing waters on the Wizard.

Discovery says two new boats will join the fleet this season. Dubbed "the floating frat house," the Ramblin' Rose introduces a young, rowdy crew skippered by Elliot Neese, 28. And Captain Scott Campbell Jr., 36, who presides over the Seabrooke, is confident but has some demons to conquer as he is haunted by the loss of a deckhand at sea.

Season 7 of Deadliest Catch kicks off on Discovery Channel on April 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

So apparently the Kodiak's cameramen fell overboard and drowned. Not shown once in the 2 hour premiere.
In past seasons I think they've covered 5 ships but only used 4 crews, swapping out one of the less popular ships for another later in the season. I'd guess we'll get some more kodiak after someone gets back to dutch to offload (I'd guess either Wizard or Rusty Rose).
