Sorry to waste your time and force you to make not one, but two sarcastic comments. I meant to imply that it doesn't really matter if this one story is true or not. We know there are atrocities. What difference does it make if it is Christians in Nigeria or Muslims in Syria? Life in that area is screwed up and everyone knows it.

You're not wasting my time, so don't apologize. What CE did here fits a pattern, a troubling impulse of his to make everything be about persecuted Christians. And, of course they are being persecuted in some areas, that is not an unknown. You don't have to advance fake stories to make folks aware of it and, in fact, it harms your advocacy when you do. But, CE and others harp on this to distinguish themselves as the chosen people, ignoring the persecution brought on by Christians throughout their short history. So, it's a grain of sand amidst a much larger issue and pattern(one can read the Persecution thread for an update on how this story is told). My bottom line is this is more about CE and his pattern of posting and philosophy behind the stories he wants to tell than it is anything else.

I know the ulterior motives of CE and others in this thread. CE is obviously biased, but doesn't seem to recognize it or want to recognize it. I doubt another thread is going to alter that. However, he is right in that there are terrible things happening and we should pay more attention to this and what kind of role our country is playing in improving or harming the situations.

Fair enough. I'm just not ready to give him a monopoly as the inventor of this idea, and using objective data to explore these issues likely would be more effective than....well, this.ETA: and it would be nice if he could generalize to other terrible things going on, rather than centralize his POV on just the terrible maltreatment of Christians. It's become such a cliche for him.

That's because the bolded wasn't CE's point. His point was that bad things were happening to Christians, who simply cannot escape the oppressive thumb of the universe, and not enough people were talking about it. It wasn't a humanitarian effort to improve the human condition, it was a woe is us Christians post. The tone of the linked article, that spent more time complaining about Facebook not letting him post a disgusting picture (which they don't let anyone do) because FB is also anti-Christian is exactly the tone CE takes with other similar topics: see Most Persecuted thread.

I am aware. I was just trying to put a more positive spin that despite this "woe is Christianity" person posting a "woe is Christianity" thread, we shouldn't let that cloud us from the fact that some of the woe is real and that is more important then whether CE is biased or a particular picture is real or not.
 
Crosseyed why did your God predestine you to start a thread when he knew you would eventually find out the picture was a fake???

Yeah, that "mistake" angle is evaporating fast. Supposedly he has a history of domestic violence and has been charged with murder. Due in court later today, I'm not sure who South African courts work, but I guess we'll find out soon.

 
Since I work directly w/ the Wounded Warriors, I'm curious to see how this plays out. This guy was recently used a lot as an example of how your life doesn't necessarily need to change so much after losing limbs. Thing is he was born that way and everyone we see lost limbs due to injury, but still, making the olypics on 2 blades gave a lot of patients hope for a normal life.

 
While I have no idea what really happened, I was in Johannesburg, South Africa a long time ago for a few weeks on business and it isn't the US. I could see how people would be afraid of someone breaking into their house. I don't know how muh has changed, but the "haves" lived in really nice houses that had huge walls around the entire community and often barbed wire at the top of the walls. Not like a gated community in the US where you can walk around the front gates. The gate communities and houses were more like prisons to keep people out.We had a project lead for the company we worked with that was also our social guide. He was packing when he drove us to Sun City one weekend and told us nonchalantly how he had killed a black guy who tried to mug him. It was a different world.

Sounds like according to the story, its still like that and may have even gotten worse.
