** Official ** Detroit Tigers 2007 Thread (2 Viewers)

The crisp pace of the club’s winter business continued Tuesday, as Detroit announced it had agreed to one-year contracts with its remaining arbitration-eligible players: outfielder Craig Monroe ($4.775 million), left-handed starter Nate Robertson ($3.26 million), infielder Omar Infante ($1.3 million), and right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney ($1.05 million).
:lmao: I love paying guys one year contracts.
Rodney for 1 mill? That's a steal. Robertson a #4 starter for 3.26? :loco: I :bag: Dave Dombrowski and the way this franchise is being run. Outstanding stuff. Team is also negotiating with Guillen on an extension. I think it comes down to his health vs how much he thinks he's worth. Hopefully they can find some common ground.

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms on a minor league contract with left-handed pitcher Joey Eischen on Thursday, giving him a chance to help a bullpen that lost lefty Jamie Walker.

The Tigers also have invited catcher Dusty Ryan to major league camp in Lakeland, Fla., where pitchers and catchers are to report Feb. 15.

Eischen made 22 appearances last year with the Washington Nationals before having season-ending surgery in June to repair a torn left rotator cuff. He has a career record of 11-9 with a 3.67 ERA in 324 games over 10 seasons in Washington, Montreal, Los Angeles, Cincinnati and Detroit, during a 24-game stint in 1996.

Left-handed batters have hit just .226 against Eischen during his career and had just two hits in 23 at-bats against him last year.

The 36-year-old Eischen likely will compete with Edward Campusano, who was acquired from Milwaukee this offseason, and lefty Wilfredo Ledezma for the spot vacated when Walker signed a $12 million, three-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles.

Even though Washington essentially shut down Eischen for the season, he was encouraged by his progress two months after surgery.

"I feel like I'm ready to go today," Eischen said on Aug. 21. "I'm way ahead of schedule."

Ryan hit .245 with six homers in 98 games at Single-A West Michigan last season and might be used in spring training games to give breaks to catchers Ivan Rodriguez and Vance Wilson.
:blockbuster:

You gotta love Jim Leyland -- he's so straightforward.

Leyland and Gene LaMont at TigerFest.
Yeah he's an old grumpy guy that has nothing to loose by saying what is on his mind. He's one of the few guys who can handle a Sheffield, a young pitching staff, and the unique mix this team has. Some people in Detroit were saying he made just a small difference to this organization and I think those people are worthless baseball minds. He makes a few mistakes now and again but besides not pitching Bonderman earlier in the ALCS and WS which was a head scratcher, he was nearly perfect. This team is going to be good and I'm excited but my expectations are certainly tempered. I think the first goal is getting out of the gate fast, then avoiding big injuries especially to the pitching staff, then getting into the playoffs. The division is insane good and Cleveland will just clog things up even further. Can't wait until pitchers and catchers report. :bag:

ready to rock DD.

even if they dont make the playoffs this season. Just contend.

The pitching is good enough, throw in sheff and who knows.

Im not so sure that Minny or the Chisox improved themselves much

Best division in biesbol though

Scored 4 tix behind home plate to 4 games this season. I'm getting fired up! Still trying to decide on a 27 game pkg or not.

Tigers rated the #2 OF going into 2007 season.

Detroit: Already strong enough to reach the World Series, the Tigers added a highly intriguing X-factor in Sheffield, who became expendable for the Yankees after their trade for Bobby Abreu. Sheffield will probably work as a primary designated hitter as there's little reason to make changes.

With Magglio Ordonez in right, Craig Monroe in left and Curtis Granderson in center, the Tigers got 71 homers and 264 RBI from their top three outfielders a year ago. Those guys are all back, along with one of baseball's best extra outfielders in Marcus Thames. He quietly delivered 26 homers and 60 RBI last season.

Granderson, a hardworking center fielder with as much range as anyone, batted leadoff last year but could be dropped in the order after striking out 174 times. He's a strong-minded kid who could take another step forward this season.
I'm also doing a blog over at rotodugout.com if you guys want to talk Tigers there.

Never been so fired up for a season and I'm fired up when I am looking at a 72-90 team. Should be a fun year.

"Four years ago," Dombrowski said, "you'd try to sign players, and they'd give you reasons why they didn't want to play for you. … 'You're not drawing well. You're not winning. Cold-weather climate. Players don't come from there.' I heard all those reasons -- and many more.

"I remember one [free agent] who was doing everything he could to not accept our offer. He just kept stringing us along, hoping something else would come up, even though we pretty much knew we were the only team that had made an offer. Even the agent was saying, 'We're just waiting.' And it went on a long time. I mean months."

Not anymore.

Now that a World Series has cast its glow on the franchise, it's almost shocking to hear the marquee future free agents -- Pudge Rodriguez, Carlos Guillen, Kenny Rogers -- just about begging this team to sign them, extend them, keep them around.

You see Casey, jumping at the Tigers' offer last fall, not even a week into the free-agent signing period. You hear Rodriguez saying: "Everyone wants to come here right now." So how magical is the power of winning? That says it all.

The closer

The closer was a Tiger back in the days of Deivi Cruz and Melvin Nieves and Omar Olivares. Todd Jones first joined the Tigers in February 1997, the season after a 109-loss nightmare.

He hasn't been a Tiger for all 10 seasons since then. But he goes back in time further than anyone around him. He saw a once-great franchise disintegrating in front of his eyes. He'd known nothing in this town but losing and more losing.

Until last year, when the Tigers brought him back, after a 4½-year, seven-team intermission. For this.

"My whole career," he said, "my knock was: 'He can't get big outs. He can't pitch in big-pressure [situations]. He's just a second-tier closer.' Well, being on a good team gives you the avenue to debate that point."

Three years ago, he got released by the Devil Rays. So imagine the feeling of this man at age 38, finding himself back in Detroit in October 2006, in the middle of a celebration he never thought he'd live to see: A celebration by a team that had just won the ALCS and now had an appointment with the World Series.

It was so overwhelming that, more than an hour after the last pitch, "I went back out on the field," Jones said. "And I sat on the back of the mound -- for five minutes, 10 minutes … just sitting there, freezing, in this empty ballpark, knowing I was going to the World Series. And it was such a fulfilling moment."

Later that night, he and his wife went out to dinner -- and got a standing ovation. For the next week, as the Tigers waited for the Series to start, he could hardly walk down the street without experiencing another head-on collision with rampant euphoria.

"People were just happy," he said. "We made them happy. People just wanted to come up and say thanks. They didn't want anything. They didn't want you to sign a picture or anything. They just wanted to say thanks. It was an awesome feeling.

"To be a part of that kind of team, that hits such a chord with people, I mean, that is why you play."

Fairly good news out of camp so far. Everyone seems pretty happy (except for Sheff, who is only really happy when he's #####ing about something), Miller pitched well yesterday against the Mets and Sleeth seems to be pitching ok. He still has a ways to go, obviously, but it'd be GREAT to see him regain prospect status.

:drive: Tiger Town is back.

Starting to get excited!

Less than one week to go!

The disappointment from last year still stings, but I vow to use it as a motivator to be a better and even more dedicated fan.

Cant Wait.

I was disappointed in the WS about a week, then after reflecting for awhile just realized how great a season that was for a dormant franchise.

Now lets win the division this year and get back to the series

Did Nefei perez make the 25 man roster over Santiago???

Wow. Michael Young got $80mm. Wow.What the hell are we going to have to pay Guillen??
It all depends how healthy he is. I think he played 152 last year but I think the previous two years didn't get over 110 or so. If he gets to 130-140, it's gonna be a lot of cash and I don't think we pay it.

I'm concerned about Verlander -- hopefully this latest outing will get him on the right track.

I hope to see Shelton back up real soon.

I expect (hope?) Bondo to make the leap this year.

BAD news:

Kenny Rogers was placed on the DL today with a "tired old arm."
fixed. This is his last season before A.miller takes his spot anyway.

Not a good start though. Ledzema fills his spot I bet
Actually they are saying Chad Durbin.
never herd of him
He's like 28 or 29, bounced around a few teams and the minors. Was in Toledo last year and almost made the team this year.

Unfortunately I see Verlander struggling. ST seems to be a continuation of his last two month woes. I think his head needs to catch up with his athletic ability.

Had to change the name since we already had one of these. :lmao:

2007 Detroit Tigers

C Ivan Rodriguez,

1B Sean Casey

2B Placido Polanco

SS Carlos Guillen

3B Brandon Inge

LF Craig Monroe

CF Curtis Granderson

RF Magglio Ordonez

DH Gary Sheffield

Bench:

C Vance Wilson

MIF/CF Omar Infante

RF/LF/1B Marcus Thames

3B/2B/SS Neifi Perez

Rotation: Jeremy Bonderman, Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander, Nate Robertson, Mike Maroth

Bullpen: Todd Jones, Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney, Wil Ledezma, Jose Mesa, Jason Grilli, Chad Durbin

Perez makes the team over Santiago and Shelton due to what is being called a "good Spring." Perez may have trouble keeping his spot if he falters and Santiago is probably the 26th guy.

Durbin and Grilli are the mop up guys and hopefully won't be counted on for a whole lot. Dubin has no more optins so he is likely to stay on the roster unless he completely stinks. To me Grilli is the worst player on the roster and despite being an organizational favorite, is a marginal pitcher who has control issues. His stuff is decent but with Campusano bringing a lefthanded option to the pen I would expect grilli to be sent down if he struggles at all.

Some Tiger fans were saying they wanted to see Shelton make the team but Shelton may or may not be a future long-term option. I think he may be a career triple A player myself but I can't be sure. He certainly needs to get as many at bats as possible but he will be back on the major league roster if and when there are injuries. He will get his chances to prove his worth and only time will tell if he is a guy who can handle the pressure and speed of major league baseball for an extended period of time. He has the power but does he have the essentials? Marcus Thames will be Sean Casey's backup at 1B in the meanwhile.

Rogers to 15-day DL with unspecified ailment; Durbin takes spot in rotationPosted by Danny Knobler March 29, 2007 09:58AMCategories: Breaking NewsLAKELAND, Fla. -- Kenny Rogers will miss his first start of the season because of what is being described as a fatigued arm. The Tigers hope it's not any worse than that.As of now, they don't know.Rogers told teammates his arm feels ``heavy.'' He left this morning to go see a specialist. The Tigers weren't able to say much more than that.``Our concern is with Kenny's welfare,'' a subdued Jim Leyland said this morning.Leyland has adjusted his rotation, moving Nate Robertson into Rogers' slot for the first series against Kansas City. It'll be Jeremy Bonderman, Robertson and Justin Verlander against the Blue Jays, and Mike Maroth and Chad Durbin in the first two games next weekend in Kansas City.Durbin moves from the bullpen to the rotation, and the Tigers brought Bobby Seay back from the minor-league camp to take Durbin's spot in the bullpen. They actually thought about putting Andrew Miller in the rotation, but decided against it.Now, how long will Rogers be out?Impossible to say right now. He told Leyland and some teammates that he hoped he'd only miss one start. The Tigers are backdating the DL so that Rogers theoretically could be activated on April 9, the first day of the series in Baltimore.``We don't think (it's going to be long-term),'' Dave Dombrowski said.In other news this morning, Vance Wilson's MRI showed nothing unusual, and he should be fine. And Carlos Guillen said that contrary to what was written this morning, he doesn't have an opening day deadline on a contract extension. He doesn't want extended negotiations during the season, but he said that if it went like the last contract (which he signed in June 2004), that would be fine.
It's a blood clot which is usually not serious. Obviously they won't be rushing him back so expect him to miss two to three starts at the beginning of the season.

:goodposting: I can hardly wait for Opening Day. Didn't get tickets, but I will be downtown getting as drunk as possible. :banned:

Went to spring training and had a blast. Seen Maybin hit a triple and a dinger and Bonderman (my favorite) pitch in the same game.

The one thing that surprised me was the average age of the staff at Joker Marchant. Has to be 78.

Took this guy as one of my 5 minor league players in a new keeper league this year. I get to keep 2 of the 5. ;)

He's pretty much a can't miss. Should see the big leagues in the late summer of 2008 and be a starter in 2009. He could come up next year but I think they are gonna give him a little time. Three years in the minors seems right. He is Eric Davis with longer legs. ;)

Do you know what team/class/city he is starting with?I live right by the Lake County class A Indians team here in Cleveland. I could do my own scouting. Screw baseball america. :goodposting:

just heard during the game broadcast that rogers had surgeory to remove the clot and will miss 6-8 weeks.
Three months according to tiger insider. Not good. Durbin was not supposed to be the guy in this spot. I'd say Tata would be first in line for the job if Rogers is gone longer or Durbin falters.

GOOD: VERY good outing by Verlander today.

TERRIBLE: The Gambler out 2-3 months. Ugh. Very bad loss for the good guys.

Leyland said that only Durbin and Miller were considered to fill rogers spot but Miller needed more minor league starts. Maybe we will see Miller soon.

I'm betting we'll see him very soon. Like in two weeks. He was sent down before Rogers had the surgury. I guess it's possible that the Tigers knew he would have the surgury when Miller was sent down and just didn't release anything to the press. hmmm..........maybe anwsering that question would shed more light on their rotation going forward.I'd love to hear some more input on this.
