leeland mcelroy was a 2nd round pick ..... but you likely were not born yet. I was playin FF when you were in diapers.

I just read through, and it's good advice. In summary to paraphrase, Waldman is saying he's a luxury/Riddick handcuff, not a necessity. Raw, unproven talent that is getting an expanded role. Buy for the price of a bag of peanuts in terms of who you're dumping because we don't know what we actually have here yet. I agree 100%, while I added him in all leagues I'm in, it was for the very last guy on my bench, which I think is what Waldman's saying too. It would be the same as someone advising on a stock play - there is risk here, so go light but dip your toe in. Do with the information what you will, but we're warning you don't go heavy (e.g., in this case drop someone with proven value).

 
Crap!  I wish i read that waldman piece before dropping L. Bell for this guy.  OTOH, Bell hasn't done anything yet this year  :confused:

That was indeed a good read.

Waldman touched on a number of essential RB skills that kept Washington off of the field in college.

The issues that cost the former wide receiver the starting job at the University of Washington was his inexperience with the nuances of his new position: taking the quarterback exchange, ball security, running short outlet routes and tracking the ball, and pass protection. Most of all, Washington didn't understand the blocking schemes he was running behind and it led to boom-bust outcomes that often hurt the team more than it helped it.

Folks that think these things won't limit his playing time at the NFL level, as a rookie, seem like they're seeing only what they want to see (namely the remarkable talent).

Full disclosure, I added Washington up in both of my leagues, so I'd love for him to be this year's home run, season-changing FA add.

sometimes guys get to the league and it clicks for a bit. A little more motivation to do things right. He very well could suck-- I'm not sold hell amount to much-- but I'm glad I'm along for the ride :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've yet to see the "I'm starting D Washington over _____" Thread yet. 

I think  folks are optimistic but he isn't in my starting lineup yet and I doubt he is in many starting lineups.

Im starting D Washington. Then again, mine hang real low.

I have him in 2 leagues and he isn't remotely in consideration for a starting spot over guys like Latavius, Shady, Sims or even Riddick..... not this week. Obviously the hope is that he works his way into this conversation.

Yup.  Waldman's gut check was a very good read.  A quick splash of cold water never hurt anyone.

We are counting on him to be a pro and learn to do so very quickly.  He could very well fumble the opportunity away, figuratively and literally. But he could also have it click well enough to get significant touches in a decent offense.

Odds are against him.  That's what makes the ride so fun.

Washington had two of Detroit's most explosive plays of the preseason, returning a kick 96 yards for a score against Pittsburgh, then breaking off a 58-yard touchdown run against Buffalo. That helped solidify not only his place on the roster, but his place in the game-day rotation as well.

Zach Zenner, a power back who showed promise as a rookie last year, has been inactive the past two weeks. He is expected to dress on Sunday against the Packers, but the Lions clearly prefer Washington at this point because of his athleticism.

He has six carries for 32 yards this season, including a brilliant 28-yarder in Sunday's loss against Tennessee. That was a team high.

"You look at the numbers, you look at his production," Caldwell said. "When he touches the ball, he's generally pretty productive. But he's young. I think you'll see him improve and keep getting better, week by week."

Remember also if he starts out slow, if anyone has watched the Amazon "Hard Knocks" equivalent (I forget what it's called) on the Cardinals, they show Arians talking to another HC during pre-game about David Johnson. Arians went on to say how they thought Johnson would be a 3-down back, but as a Rookie didn't want him to get a big head so quickly. Take that speculation FWIW, but also don't drop immediately after the next week or two if he's only getting a few carries a game but looks decent+ when he's getting the ball.

The odds were against him when he was in training camp. The coaches know more than we do and put him on the roster and ahead of other guys so I believe the odds are in his favor at this point.

I have to start him. Unless I pull the trigger on Devante Parker for Ryan Matthews tonight. 

Kind of SOL to be honest... I wouldn't start him unless you were in my shoes and it's between him, a suspended Bell, and CAP

Kevin Cole used regression analysis of combine measurables for all RBs from 2000 to 2013 to determine which drills really matter and which ones don't.  The decision tree result, explained in that article, buckets backs based on the results of the most impactful drills (traits identified by the regression analysis of the most successful backs).  Washington's pro-day results (he wasn't invited to the combine) were elite, and when put through the decision tree, classify Washington in the 78% success rate bucket (success defined as at least 1 Top-12 PPR RB season in his first 3 years in the league).  I would suggest reading the article for further detail.  While RotoViz is a pay site, they often give the first read of an article for free.

As I said before, the size and speed are great, but his agility is what's off the charts.  This article by Shawn Siegele (also RotoViz - so may not work after you've read the first one if you're not a subscriber) explains the concept of Agility Score.  Here's the gist of it:

Digging deeper - agility scores become really impressive when they're tied to 220+ lb players.  It's one thing for Chris Rainey to destroy the 3-cone and the short shuttle.  It's totally different when a 230lb Le'Veon Bell does it

Ended up moving Eli Rogers for him in dynasty. Team has horrible RBs (headlined by Abdullah) and a solid group of receivers. Fairly happy with that price.

Now I'm not saying that Washington is going to put up 5.6 YPC & 7 TDs. I watched those games and Karlos would come in after Shady needed a breather and just had a knack for finding the end zone. He was fresh and had good burst. It is possible that Detroit could be in a similar situation depending on how the team uses the RBs (Riddick gets them down the field and Washington comes in for a breather as they approach the red zone). But that's expecting a lot. He seems to have pretty good vision from what little action I've seen of him, so it appears as though he is more than a freakish athlete and may actually be a football player.

Just thought I'd share the comparison. A lot of people were high on Karlos, until he got high, and fat.

That's actually a REALLY interesting comparison, because the reason Karlos fell in the draft despite his insane athleticism was because he was a fairly raw convert from the safety position who just didn't have the nuances of the position down. Between that and injuries, very rarely did he look that good his final year in college--his game hardly developed at all from the previous year (in which he originally made the switch to RB) and he just didn't get a chance to show off too much. You could easily argue that the extra exposure and buzz he got from playing at FSU is the reason he went higher than Washington did--plus he was a 5 star recruit at safety, so the Bills might have been more comfortable with his pedigree and just all-around aware of his existence than teams were about a guy who also didn't have great production, but had great athleticism, from the much smaller Washington.

Great comparison, thanks for bringing it up. Similar measurables, lack of production and consistency, injuries, position switches, drafted late to a team that seemingly already had plenty of RB talent at the top of the depth chart...

The one difference is that while both are long, smooth athletes there was a violence to Karlos Williams' game his rookie year that I havent really seen from Washington yet. But then, Williams didn't show it much in college either, so with that H/W/S combo it can clearly be learned.

 
So I have Kenneth Dixon stashed away and washington is still on the wire, do I make the swap. I think its kind of a toss up on who will hit.

Yeah, anytime a player's high school coach compares that RB to Adrian Peterson he's got my attention. Really, what do all those NFL scouts and GMs know after all? They let him slide to the seventh round. His HS coach thinks he's the next Adrian Peterson. Good enough for me.

I would keep Dixon. I am really high on Washington, but Dixon has a much higher percentage of "hitting" and being valuable for your team in the second half of the season.

Could you just humor an old man and please post your thoughts about what Lynch meant to this offense and how his departure/retirement has impacted the team. I personally felt that he was a major reason that Seattle has struggles. IMO he is/was a HoF RB that had a highlight reel that was more than impressive and speaks for itself. 

OL seems like an issue as well but would like ot hear your thoughts on this. 

 
Do we know yet if he will still be returning kicks? Could make him more startable in return leagues, especially this weekend against GB.

Make the swap! Dixon will eventually start for the Ravens, but more like next year. And Dixon just doesn't have the eye-popping ability of Washington.

Washington's big. He's fast. He's got great hands as a converted WR on a team that loves dumping it off to its RBs. That one long run against the Titans--he broke ankles with a jump cut and then ran through a couple of guys...ALL ON ONE PLAY.

I wouldn't start him this week, but it's only a matter of time that Washington is the franchise RB that Detroit has been looking for since Barry IF given the opportunity. And the only thing standing in his way right now is a Theo Riddick that's already beat up. I had the same thoughts about David Johnson at this point last year. Kid is special.

 
Picked up Washington last night on waivers for a fairly hefty price... and was offered Charles Sims for him today.

So, I guess that gives some idea of his value, at least in my league. I declined because I do not need immediate RB help. But, if I did, I would have been all over it, I believe.
