Just played a round and a half. Its definitely fun. Certainly some beta-centric issues to work out and the movement feels a little clunky at the moment (gotta get my mouse sensitivities matched up) but its pretty cool.

So weird not knowing a map and not being able to choose what weapon I want.

They really made some big changes to the way that tanks work. Once you shoot a certain amount of shells, you have to pause for a really long reload.

:( don't taze my tank bro

So I jumped in for a couple rounds before work as well. :bag: Looked really nice, swimming has cool water effects, didn't jump in a boat but for a second though. Tried all the classes really briefly, but not enough to really get a feel for them. They did feel much like the classes from BF3 though, so that is a good thing. I hate the gun the Engy has by default, but no idea if that is the same one that class will launch with.

The play test showed me real quick that I am going to need a new video card sooner rather than later. No delaying that purchase any longer I don't think. Even with everything at low and at 1280x800, I was barely getting 30fps, and dropping in firefights below that.

Looking at the Saffire 7870 HD on NewEgg for $160 after rebate - anyone have any other suggestions before I pull the trigger?

BTW, the setting in the console for FPS has changed, I found it but don't remember it offhand while here at work - starts with "perf" though instead of being attached to render. Still ends with "drawfps 1", so just enter the console (~) and type "perf" and you should see the rest of the command shown there.

I believe that you can avoid the long reload if you space your shots out correctly. If that's true, I like it. Gotta do something to keep lone tank drivers from rolling an entire team on the smaller maps.

In bf2, tank drivers actually had limited shells. They needed a supply crate to reload.

Engys get pdw's as their class specific weapons. Unfortunately, the asval (my top bf3 weapon) isn't in the game.

Good news is that all classes get access to carbines and dmrs, so if the pdw isn't your thing, you won't have to suffer for long

Honest question. How bad is the cheating in this game?
I can only speak to what's it's like on pc.

In almost 500 hours of game play, I've seen like 3 blatant cheaters.

The more subtle stuff is pretty much impossible to know for sure. With 64 players in a server, you usually don't encounter 1 individual enough to know for sure whether they are cheating.

I've had suspicions that players were using some kind of wall hack or multi hack (I believe there is one that gives you an indicator when someone is aiming at you or sees you) but I obviously couldn't prove it.

So overall, I'd say not bad at all.

Even for a Beta, the performance is REALLY bad. Crazy lag spikes everywhere. Gotten kicked and lost some unlocks 2 or 3 times already.

Again, its a Beta, so who cares. Just frustrating.

It is what it is. Its pretty clear that this beta is really poorly optimized. Not a lot of things to unlock either. Gun play is kinda loose in comparison to Bf3.

So you are saying there's a chance my current video card will still work ok come live? Pffft...shhhh, I think I want a new one.

I don't know what card you have, but the game will absolutely run better at release. This thing is a buggy mess. Way worse than the Bf3 beta (only major bug there was the falling through the floor glitch. There were very few crashes)

Just had 2 separate servers that wouldn't let me spawn. I'm giving up for a while.

Definitely getting a new card for release. Gonna start monitoring for sales this week. Still deciding between the Radeon 7950 and the GTX 770. Leaning NVIDIA, but the price is a lot steeper. If I see it on sale, I'll pull the trigger.

Yeah, can't play anymore. The game keeps freezing at the loading screen and eventually crashing. Tons of people having the same issue.

after trying several posted fixes (rolling back drivers, manually updating punkbuster, etc), I tried just manually logging out of battle log and logging back in. Connected first try and the game ran really well.

Might have been a fluke, but might be worth a try.

Spent most of the night last night working with Mumble to get it working on my system. Maelstrom was there to feel my frustration. Weird issue, but I think I have it fixed, not that I really know what was wrong.

Not that I have any time to game, but I've been watching the 770 for a while now. The price is frustratingly stable. I will probably end up getting one around release day on the off change I get a few nights to run with you jokers.

Well, I hate to say it, but my opinion of the beta map is that it's not fun. I'd almost rather play Wake. But it's not Alborz bad.

Its not the greatest map I've ever played, but it has potential.

I actually kinda like Bf3 wake as long as its a balanced match. It sucks when you have to hoof it all the way from A-E because one team is dominating).

Shangai is actually sort of like Wake in that respect. The fighting over and around C is really good (battles on top of the sky scraper are pretty awesome) but the walks between points are a little long. If you have to go from A-E or E-A, it can be rough. I thought there'd be a lot more boats. I think it will be better once there is a commander. The fighting will be more focused because certain flags that control commander assets will be more important.

I can see a lot of similarities. That's true. If you have a team that is truly owning C, you can pretty much dominate the rest of the map from that spot (at least prior to the building coming down). After it comes down, I think the map loses some charm and is too grey.

Just started playing BF3 a lot for the first time and am enjoying it quite a bit on the medium to large maps. If anyone is still out there on 360 look for me at We Goin Sizzler.

Finally got some extended play time with the beta this afternoon. No disconnects or crashes, decent performance. I'm only playing on medium graphics until I get my new card, but the game looks really pretty.....at least until the sky scraper comes down. Then it looks like someone finished all over the map.

Positives...

-Sound is awesome. From the videos I've seen with people playing on Ultra, the graphics are awesome as well

- Vehicle game play is much more balanced. If you play smart, you can take a tank driver down as a lone engy. Just need to correctly place your shots and use his reload limitations to your advantage

- The gun play seems better now that I've got the game performing ok. When I set my feet and take smart shots, I hit. If I do stupid crap, I usually miss

Negatives...

-All the pretty sky scrapers on Shanghai means lots of useless roof campers. The bright side is they are in your squad, you can just spawn on them and parachute down. The chute depots much faster than it did in bf3, so you can do low altitude jumps and not take 80 damage when you hit

- Any other negatives I can think of off the top of my head are because its a beta. So I'm not complaining.

Placement is definitely noticeable when taking on a tank. I've notice that it seems to take into account distance and spot of impact on how much damage you take. I've even taken down a tank with the Support's new weapon (forgot what they call it).

Also I agree that sound is superb for this one.

I played a little bit of Domination today. I thought it was really fun and was able to rack up plenty of kills. Going by what I saw in Domination play, I agree that the guns seemed balanced. At least from what is unlocked so far.

Pretty sweet tank run at the end of the night last night.

Ammo is really at a premium right now. Nobody is playing support

The roof camping is really starting to get to me. Out of the 64 people on the map, there's usually at least 15-20 laying prone up on roofs. Now, they usually don't kill me (since they're mostly awful) but the lack of guys on the ground makes the game boring. I end up running around like a chicken with my head cut off looking for ANYONE to shoot and run myself into bad situations. Its just really lame.

City maps are my favorite kind of maps, but unlimited roof access just ruins it. So many scrubs who think they're Tom Berringer spending 30 minutes taking pot shots (and ending up with MAYBE 5 kills) instead of helping the team.

Yeah, its driving me nuts.

Can't find anyone? Just take an elevator (or heli ride) to the roof. Has yielded a couple nice quick kills generally.

I've already been back to BF3 cause the one map got a bit bland...actually had some really good rounds last night. Not sure if that's cause everyone who isn't scrubs is over play testing the beta, but I'll take it regardless.

I'm already sick of the beta map too. I still find it more fun on Domination mode than Conquest. At least there, there's only one roof to worry about.

Yeah, I could go up there after them. But then I'm just stooping to their level (hunting "easy" kills without playing the objective). I just think its weak. Plus most of the roofs don't have a way up. Guys jump off C to one of the surrounding buildings right at the start of the round and pretty much lay up there the entire game.

Is commander mode active? Could he call in an airstrike to wipe them out?

Don't know. Commander isn't live during the beta.

Wow you quoted me before my edit! Meant mode, and you answered the question.

Yeah, no commander at this point.

I actually kinda like domination mode on Shanghai. Much better than the bf3 cq dlc. There's actually some strategy involved and the spawn system is much better

Beta update today. Wipes out all previous stats and settings, so expect to redo your key binds and setup when you get into the game. In addition, it appears that the new update lowers my FPS by an average of 10 FPS. But, most people that were having trouble getting into a game can finally get in to knock a building down.

I don't know what the update was officially supposed to fix. I'll let TLEF look into that. So far, I haven't seen anything good about it.

Anyone know anything about PowerCooler? Looking at this 7870 (http://bit.ly/GM8WUS) with the Tahiti LE chip (same chip in the 7950, but with 1/4 of the chip disabled) - only $150 after rebate.

Specs seem to put it 10-15% faster than the old chip 7870s but obviously still slower than the "uncrippled" 7950s. But, it is cheaper than any of the "standard" 7870s, which makes me worry a little. My last few cards have been Sapphire, and they made a Tahiti chipped card as well, but it is either sold out or well over $200 everywhere I looked. PowerCooler reviews from review sites were pretty positive, but the Amazon and Newegg reviews seem quite hit or miss, and it seems to run hot (~65-70 deg C under load.) But it'll push 50-60 fps in BF3 on Ultra, so guessing similar in BF4.

My stats are still showing in battlelog, but I haven't played the game in a few days. Seeing lots of reports of the patch hurting performance. LOL

I'm actually debating upgrading to windows 8 as it apparently comes with a pretty significant performance increase for the game. I'll probably wait until I get a new vid card after release. If I feel I could use the extra FPS, maybe I'll give it a look.

The new patch unlocked obliteration mode, but on the same map. I was hoping they'd give us a crack at Paracel storm. :kicksrock:

My stats were still around last night on the servers we played on. Must've just been that one server.

Played a couple of rounds of Obliteration. It was more fun than I thought it was going to be. Reminds me of Push in TFC, except with 3 goals per team.

Nothing wrong with a Powercolor. It looks like the value for high performance cards right now is the 7970 for just over $300.
