By semi-popular demand, let’s do another fake basketball draft for this year.

OFFICIAL RULES
- 15 round snake draft, 3rd round reversal
- no trading draft picks
- make picks here in this thread and also add them to draft spreadsheet
- there will be no clock, but if you’ll be away for a while and coming up soon, make sure to send a list to someone so we don’t get too bogged down
- the only restriction is ONLY ONE PLAYER MAX PER NBA TEAM on your roster
- drafting should be focused more on team building for the 25-26 season (things like defense and fit should matter) rather than fantasy
- I’ll dump the rosters into a 8-category roto fantasy league just to keep track of the season stats - no roster maintenance required
- I’ll compile consensus rankings after the draft is complete

Ok I’m fine doing a draft like we normally do if more people prefer. Either with a theme like real salaries and a cap, or what I was thinking for last year where players are grouped based on where they played pre-NBA (euros, HS, college conferences, etc). Or we just do a normal draft with no theme to add any complexity.

@Frostillicus suggested a fantasy league and a few in the nba thread were on board, but I’m fine with whatever.

If I recall correctly, I was in a WIS league with you guys many years ago. At the end, I learned that Omer Asik was good on offense but bad at defense.

I could do what I’ve usually done and load all the rosters into a FanTrax league to track the stats.

I have an idea for a draft format I’ll post later - been under the weather this morning.

Ok here’s what I’m thinking to make it the best/worst of both worlds.

We draft teams of 15 players, then I’ll throw all the rosters into a free Fantrax fantasy league to calc a season long 8-category roto league. I usually also track things like minutes and games played just to scratch that WIS itch, but don’t count them in the roto scoring. I could also do it 9-category, but counting TOs can penalize the teams that have deeper/healthier rosters over the full season.

I’d say we do the usual and try to draft the best NBA team and consider things like fit and style of play (regardless of fantasy), do our combined rankings after the draft, and then just let the fantasy scoring shake out during the season.

Doing it this way takes some pressure off getting the draft done before the start of the season.

So last thing to figure out is format. Do we want to add some complexity/scarcity/theme to the drafting to make things interesting (like we have done with adding the salary component)? The salary cap thing is probably more than my brain can handle right now, so here is my proposal that’s not too complex but will make you think just a bit.

SPREAD THE WEALTH DRAFT - Super teams? Super Conferences? Pshaw! We set limits on how many players you can draft from each nba team, division, and conference. I was thinking something like having maximums of 1 player drafted per nba team, 3 players per division, and 8 per conference.

So I’m open for other ideas but this should be easy for everyone (especially me), but still give a little strategy beyond a straight draft.


So time for an informal poll - just vote via post here, I’m too lazy to set up a pole.

Option A - Limit how many players you can draft per team/division/conference. I’m flexible on the amounts suggested above.

Option 2 - No limits, just draft.

I've never used the Fantrax fantasy league component. Why would we do that versus just drafting via, say, Yahoo Fantasy?

The way we’ve done it in the past is a slower paced draft in the thread so we can talk about our picks and make fun of each other. Then I load the rosters in a fantasy site to track the stats for S&Gs.

Sorry for the delay, it’s been a crazy week.

We’ll get this draft started next week since I’m out of town this weekend.

Based on the incredible feedback so far (1 vote), I think I will put some lineup restrictions on the drafting to make things interesting.

Proposed rules:
- 15 round serpentine draft, 3rd round reversal. Try to build the best overall team for this season.
- We’ll do a post-draft consensus ranking on the best projected team for this year (whatever criteria that you want to use).
- I’ll also dump all the rosters in a fantasy site to do a season long 8-category roto league (no add/drops, trades, lineup changes, etc).

Lineup restrictions
- 1 player max per NBA team
- 3 players max per NBA division
- 8 players max per NBA conference

If those seem too restrictive I can go to 4 per division and 9 per conference, but I want to make you work a little.

I plan on having that populate automatically in the spreadsheet and will have a table in there for reference.

I’m willing to tweak things, though. Just looking for a way to add a little strategy and scarcity to the drafting.

Who the heck knows who's in what division anymore? That's what makes it interesting. I think divisions are almost entirely irrelevant except as the third or fourth level tiebreaker.

I only know what division the Warriors are in from listening to the wrong division-centric podcast episode. Come to think of it, I still don't know

I only know it's the Smythe Division because I'm a local.
