*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (1 Viewer)

Interesting stuff from Prisco

A few weeks ago, I had a chat with Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell after his team won for the first time.

"Don't win too many, you will blow your draft pick," I said to him.

Caldwell laughed and said that he wanted his team to win as many games as possible.

A month ago, I didn't think that was wise thinking.

Now I do.

The biggest reason for that change is I don't think there is a true slam-dunk, can't-miss passer in next year's draft. Now that the Jaguars have won three out of their last four games, including beating the Cleveland Browns this week, it's almost becoming a moot point. They would pick third right now.

I also think Caldwell is good enough at evaluating talent that he will find good players, including a good quarterback, no matter where he is drafting.

I sure hope he's as good as Prisco thinks he is. Early return suggest so. I felt really good about the Monroe/Britton selections from Gene Smith though, so I'm withholding judgement for now.I've mentioned it before, the fact that Gus has been able to win some games with this current team is pretty awesome. I like how they didn't throw in the towel when they easily could have.
That owner won't allow it. I have my reservations about Kahn and his ability to be a premier owner but he has a roll up his sleeves mentality, that must rub off on the players. He treats them well to boot.

The Discovery Channel showed a program earlier tonight called "NFL in Season" and this episode featured the Jags and Niners in London. Showed both teams in the week leading up to the matchup, the game preparation, and the game itself. Anyway, what struck me was what an impressive guy Gus Bradley is. I had never heard him interviewed before.

Constantly upbeat, upbeat, upbeat... spreading positive vibes in spite of this disastrous season. Easy to see why he got the job from a personality standpoint. Obviously, if the X's and O's don't improve - despite a terrible roster - he'll eventually just be another coach on the unemployment line.

But he's a natural-born leader, I'll tell you that much. I'm sure this will be replayed at some point. Worth checking out.
He's a very engaging personality; he's that way all the time.

But if he doesn't get some talent on his team within the next couple of years, he's destined to go by the wayside.
I'm happy to see the boys fighting hard for him every week. Seems like you have yourselves a fine young coach.

Not one complaint here. Realistically, this team shouldn't be winning games.

Holy Crap, I just realized. They have a two game lead on HOU and the H2H tiebreaker so they've virtually sewn up the third place schedule next year. Home vs AFC East and at AFC West. Currently that would mean Jets (instead of Bills for 4th place schedule) and at SD (instead of Oakland).

Wow is all I can say. Wow

Jags were the embarrassment of the league. Simmons wrote a piece about just how bad it was in Jacksonville, too funny to be true, and yet it was all based on the brutal facts. Jags have come a long way from being Just Another Guy(s). I don't recall such a dramatic in-season turnaround in recent memory at least. Great stuff. Gus has them playing fired up and thru the whistle. You got a good coach, good GM. Build on it.

Props to Jaguar Nation. You deserve it.

Agreed. Even when they were in the basement, I got the sense that Gus was a good coach and the players were doing their best for him. Who could have seen such a turnaround though.

If they can get a QB behind a healthy o-line with MJD, Shorts, and Sanders as weapons....watch out.

Congrats on the wins guys. I know what it's like to have your team be in the situation the Jags were and have tried to avoid the piling on I know you guys have endured. Heh, looks like my team is back in that situation at least for now.

Anyway, good luck finishing out the season. Since seeing what the Jags new owner is like, I had a feeling they would be turning it around. I think he's a guy who knows what it takes to put a successful organization together, just needed time to learn who the right guys were.

Blackmon should be back next season too if he stays clean and sober.

Just a hunch, but I don't think Slapdash just missed Blackmon there as an oversight. Looks like he deliberately omitted him. No doubt Blackmon has phenominal talent, but management is going to seriously evaluate who they can count on going forward.

Agreed.

especially if management gets good results without him.

The Jags haven't counted him out yet, so I wouldn't either.

And Mincey was picked up by the Broncos.

Hope he doesn't miss his plane.

Maybe he should keep his watch set to Eastern time.

Brad Meester will retire at the end of the season. He's a good dude, but should have retired last year.

He's the last Tom Coughlin drafted player left on the team.

Yeah. He is really an incredible player but the Jags would be best served not to count on him. Anything he brings is a bonus at this point.

Yes, last home game for Meester.

Big question: is it last home game for MJD?

He says he wants to stay and will take a paycut, but Caldwell has been pretty cold-blooded in cuts so far. Not sure MJD's number will be what Caldwell wants to pay.

I think Caldwell might move on.

I think Caldwell offers backup pay and MJD is "insulted" and moves on.

Well, I sure hope so.

The focus for Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch remains on Sunday’s season finale at Indianapolis.

But next week, Fisch will begin the process of evaluating the quarterbacks available in next May’s NFL draft.

“As soon as the season ends,” he said before practice Thursday. “Right away.”

Coach Gus Bradley said he hasn’t looked at any college prospects, but some coaches have been known to get a head start. Two years ago, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan would spend 30-45 minutes most December mornings looking at quarterbacks.

Months later, the Redskins traded up to No. 2 to select Robert Griffin III.

The Jaguars’ draft position will be finalized after the Colts game — a loss to make them 4-12 would help them stay in the top 5.

Fisch said he will look at 20-25 college quarterbacks and there is a method to the analytical madness.

“I’ll start with just game tapes and then after game tapes, I’ll look at [cut-up] tapes so it will be more along the lines of — I’ll look at their third downs, their red zone, their two-minute drives and then I’ll look at all their sacks and the play that followed the sack to see how they handled it and then their broken plays. What happened when it wasn’t easy?” Fisch said.

Outside of physical attributes, a necessary element of quarterback play is leadership. Fisch said the picture will be further developed by talking to the quarterback and those around him.

“That’s hard to see on tape, I think,” he said. “You could maybe get a TV copy and see it more than on coach’s film. But you have to go by conversations with the player, the coach and the teammates of the player. You have to do your investigative reporting to see exactly what type of guy they are outside of the coach’s film.”

Every team that lost to the Jaguars during the 2013 season has fired their coach (Texans, Titans, Browns)

Shad was on fire today at some press conference / lunch in NYC.

“Everybody knows we’re going to draft a QB, maybe 2.”

“Gus won the Senior Bowl and the other team’s coach wasn’t fired. That’s progress.”

Rotoworld:

Owner Shad Khan stated at the Super Bowl Friday that he would "absolutely" like suspended WR Justin Blackmon back with the Jaguars in 2014.

Blackmon is eligible for reinstatement before next season, though the date on which he can file is unknown. He's a recommended Dynasty target, coming with obvious risk that should make Blackmon more affordable via trade. Blackmon just turned 24, and the Jaguars obviously still envision him as a part of their future. They're also going to be upgrading at quarterback very soon.
