*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (2 Viewers)

Interesting look at how the Jags have structured their FA deals.

:nerd:

Most of them have the guaranteed money predominately in year1.

They also have used roster bonuses to increase the cash and cap hit for 2014. This will help their spending approach the 90% of cap stipulation for floor.

As a result, there is very little dead money if these guys wash out.

Really smart approach by Caldwell. I really like what they've done in FA. If they can have a solid draft, they should be markedly improved next year.

What is this feeling I'm having? I think it's called hope. Not sure though.

I was going to start a separate thread (think I think it is thread-worthy), but I hate when they get diluted so I will lump this in here:

Attention needs to be paid around the league as to what is happening in Jacksonville. Teams (and companies throughout the US) often talk about "changing the culture", but it rarely seems to happen. Wins certainly help the process (see Cincinnati), but it usually takes a long while and often times the stigma still remains (see Cincinnati). As a Jets fan, Rex certainly changed it some, but we're still thought of as the lowly Jets. It is not a mystery that places like Oakland and Cleveland cannot get out of their own way and have been in this cycle for over a decade.

Hats off to what Khan/Caldwell/Bradley are doing in Jax. It is important to point out that they have the cap room to sign these guys, but so does Oakland, for example. The difference is that people actually want to go to Jacksonville (Jax has not been giving the money away either). What I find incredible is that 18 months ago, this was a downtrodden franchise, without much of a history (again places like Oakland and Cleveland have wonderful traditions/legacies, and players want to be part of that). Jacksonville still rocks the teal blue of the 90s (think professional franchises that started in the 90s like the San Jose Sharks, Florida Marlins and Carolina Panthers...was there a sale on that color back then??), but players are flocking there like they have a chance to play for the Giants or Steelers. I am not sure how they are doing it (and they are doing it well), but they are going to really turn this thing around fast. They seem to have the perfect trifecta of a great owner, heady GM and likable HC.

I am not saying they will make a run at this year (or next), but the foundation they are laying for a destination that used to be "last or only stop" is quite amazing.

Well said.

We knew he was all but gone, but I'll miss Maurice. He was the only bright spot for years. I hope he does well with the Raiders, but I'm not sure how much tread he has left (I think he has something left in the tank).

:goodposting:

He showed a lot of heart with 8, 9 , or more men in the box on bad teams the last couple years.

He ran hard last year but he no longer has the 4th gear to run away from safeties. He can move people and turn a no-gain into 3 or 4. But he can also turn a 12 yarder into an 8 yarder.

With that said, I don't know how the team really did him wrong. He earned a much bigger paycheck last year than he probably just signed for.

"Like other recent signings, new #Raiders RB Jones-Drew said "I have a chip on my shoulder. I know I felt like I was done wrong" by #Jaguars"

The Jaguars had made smart free agency signings up to this point by inking solid players like:

- OG Zane Beadles 5 years $30 million with $12.5 million gauranteed and they can bail in 2 years

- RB Toby Gerhart 3 years $10 million with $4.5 guaranteed and they can bail after only 1 year

- DL Red Byant 4 years $19 million with $5.225 gauranteed, they can bail after only 1 year

- DE Chris Clemmons 4 years $17.5 million with $5 guaranteed, essentially a 4 year deal with a hit of $5.5 each year.

- DL Ziggy Hood 4 years $16 million $5.5 million gaurantee and can bail after 1 year.

Then they signed other guys. The biggest contract is baiscally Clemmons becuase it is a true 4 year deal.

Good, solid, really smart free agent signings that I really like. They also re-signed Henne which was smart.

The key to structuring a deal to entice Mack would be guarantees and length of contract.

Alex Mack is already guaranteed to be the highest paid center in the history of the National Football League for the 2014 season so the only way for the Jags to sign him would be to give him a MINIMUM of over $10.039 million and a MINIMUM of two years but he'd want a four/five/six year deal so he wouldn't be playing under a series of one-year deals facing the transition/franchise tags ever year till his value drops.

If they made that sort of a signing they would wipe out the positive moves they've made in free agency up to this point.

This isn't a team with a franchise QB in place like Indianapolis who crunched the numbers on Mack and took a pass because they know he's not worth that sort of ransom.

What the hell are they thinking here?

As was mentioned in that BCC article, the Jags don't have a big money re-signing coming due in a couple years(unlike Indy with Luck in a couple of years). Jags cap right now is pretty much pay as you go with little to no dead money/

Yeah, he's set to make 10 Mil this year but nothing guaranteed after that.

I think if they put a bunch of guaranteed money in 2015, the Browns might have problems because they DO have people that need to re-signed (haden, josh Gordon among others).

I think if they gave him 5/48 with 25 mil guaranteed in first 3 years, the Browns might have to think twice, especially if they arranged for a really big cap hit in 2015.

One local sportswriter opined that maybe they ARE going QB at #3 so they can pair the rookie QB with a veteran center.

Three years at $25 million guaranteed money for an NFL center is insane. One year at over $10 million is crazy enough but a minimum of 3 years is the minimum because PFT stated the Browns would match any two year deals in the $22 million ballpark. I the gauranteed money would be higher than $25 million.

The contracts that Jacksonville has structured have been solid but anything like that wipes out the traction the Jags have made up to this point. If they are that desperate then draft the top centers available in the next three drafts and not pay as much money and quite frankly the drop-off wouldn't be that noticeable.

Alex Mack has the highest motor in the league at his position but he's not domininating at the POA. His best attribute is firing out in space, most noticeably he can get to the outside to lead sweeps. He's also incredibly durable and he finishes every block but he's not dominating at the point of attack, he's not. He's no Kevin Mawae, he's nowhere near that sort of overpower/dominating player.

The Jags have done really well in free agency up to this point. I have been quitely impressed but wanted an excuse to pop in and congratulate you guys on what you've been doing becuase its been damend impressive. Can't say overpaying to get Alex Mack makes sense.

The Jags can draft a center at a fraction of the cost. They will draft a rookie QB it is a good idea to have a veteran center but if they get a top center in the draft it makes much more sense to get the battery of a rookie QB and rookie C to build and grow together then to get a stop-gap guy for a years and grossly overpay him and then wind up having to dump him and his bloated contract.

It just doesn't make sense.

I've changed my stance on whether or not the Jags would consider taking Sammy Watkins at #3. I previously thought they have other needs to tend to, but with Blackmon's status unknown and Shorts being a solid, but not spectacular WR, I'd have to think he's in play here. The team needs playmakers.

Schefter reporting Jags to sign Alex Mack t 5 year deal

Alex Mack's 5-year deal with Jacksonville will be designed to make it as difficult as possible for the Browns to match, per sources.

Sources close to Alex Mack say he wants to play this contract in Jacksonville, not Cleveland, which opted not to give him long-term deal.

Excellent.

Watching how some Browns fan have reacted towards this franchise and city during this Alex Mack offer is sad, really. The Jags merely tried to sign the guy and get better, not burn the Browns headquarters down to the ground.

they are trying to change their tunes quickly from "mack is ours and great" to "mack is over paid screw him" but they are riding the fence on that in case the browns match, so they can say "see we were shrewd and kept him"

Exactly. Don't think you'll see too many long winded posts about how signing Mack screwed up the Browns cap if they match the deal.

So if the Browns don't match, the Jags are losers because a center would be their highest paid player but if the Browns match, the Browns were crafty because they let somebody else do the negotiations for them.

Pretty much. Seems to me, with Haden, Gordon, and Cameron due new deals, it makes more sense for the Browns to NOT match, if using the Grossi method of contract leaderboard.

The Jags don't have three young guys looking for max deals like the Browns do.

 at Browns fans and media ripping Jacksonville and their fanbase. As if they had some sort of legacy or winning history. Jacksonville's GM Caldwell is way smarter than anyone out of Cleveland. They shot themselves in the foot for not franchise tagging Mack in the first place. Browns fans come off butthurt that Mack would choose to leave them. I think they are still not over getting spurned by Lebron. I hope you guys land Mack, Jags are going to rebound off the mat faster than the Browns will in any case. Browns are a dumpster fire. I wish the Raiders would have pulled off a move for Mack, but glad somebody called the Browns bluff. The draft will be very interesting to see when the Browns and Jags pick back to back every round.

\Then you do the exact same thing with this post and rip the Browns.

Shot themselves in the foot for not pissing Mack off more by franchising him when they can now keep him for at least 2 years with year 1 and 2 both separately being under what the franchise tag would have cost?

Why bring up Lebron?

LOL troll on brother.

Speaking of trolling, one Browns fan got an unexpected response

DOWN GOES FRAZIER! DOWN GOES FRAZIER!

If you havent been paying attention the last few days on Jaguars Twitter, the twitter battles between Browns' fans and Jaguars' fans has been pretty heated.

Well, like always, people are really dumb, so they say really dumb things.

For instance, one Browns fans said of "At least we are owned by an American." GOOD ONE! Racism at it's finest.

Jaguars' owner Shad Khan is the example and embodiment of the American Dream. I would imagine, and would be more than willing to find out, that his finely manicured mustachioed face smells like apple pie and the finest of American made whiskey.

So, just when you thought you couldn't love this franchise anymore, who appears out of no where on his majestic white steed? The Chosen One, Jacksonville's first son, Tony.

@dawgpoundprobs So are we, bro. So are we #jags "@DawgPoundProbs: @JaxBoz @BoldCityCap @Wiggle_Man dude at least we're owned by an American”

Nothing to see here, folks. Just another day in the life of a Jaguars fan. Started. Started. Started from the bottom now we here.

Well, it was worth a try; I don't blame Caldwell for trying to make the team better. It just wasn't enough to dissuade Cleveland in the end (they pretty much instantly matched).

Still don't know why some of their fans took it so personally though.

Cat must be out of the bag that Clowney is going 1.01. They need to reexamine things.

Oh, and Russell Allen was cut yesterday. He was never starter material, but seemed like a good guy.

Three others were cut. I know that the roster was close to its limit (including the 11 draft choices), so I think this gives flexibility in case that they acquire more picks this year.

He was a guy who would have been a really good backup LB but had to start due to the talent vacuum. Supposedly he failed a physical (concussion symptoms???)

Why did the Jags release their highest rated O-lineman (per PFF) in Nwaneri? He was the only O-lineman who didn't a negative rating last year.

Not sure if drafting Bridgewater is a great idea unless they use the rest of their picks on OL.

That's just like saying he was the prettiest ugly chick available. The whole interior line was sooo bad.

He was due a $1Million roster bonus and had a cap hit of almost 6 mil. And he wasn't really a ZBS guy.

Russell Allen suffered a stroke Week 15. Poor guy, it's great to read he has closure with everything though. Good read on Allen's story and what's next.

http://mmqb.si.com/2014/04/22/russell-allen-jacksonville-jaguars-stroke/

According to the Jags' beat writer, Russell Allen will be on blood thinners the rest of his life and has to avoid heavy lifting.

Allen wants to pursue a career in teaching/coaching in the San Diego area. Wish him well.

Shad Khan can’t be happy with NFL.com’s writers. This is from the official league site for the Week 10 schedule

The International Series concludes with a matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars. This will be the first of three London trips for the Jags through the 2016 season. The London Jaguars does have an excellent ring to it.
http://www.nfl.com/schedules/2014/REG10

ETA: And it's also factually incorrect.

Personally, I am so used to this type of stuff (both the insults and the inaccuracies) that it rarely gets to me. But I imagine it pisses Khan off, especially given it is the league's own website.

i am hopeful that this long storied and proud franchise will probably move on from franchise killer blaine bilbo baggins gabber this year that guy was horrible and set you back a decade i am hoping for a good draft and turnaround year take htat to the bank brohans

Rooting for the Jags. Always liked them since the very early days of Keenan McCardell, Fred Taylor, and Mark Brunell. I think the direction they're moving will make them a contender but it may take some time.

No need to be hopeful about them probably moving on from Gabbert, they moved on from him when they traded him to San Francisco.
