Lotta free agent Qbs, should they target one or spend an early pick on one? I feel like if they could get an actual game managing qb and spend a high pick on another immediate need that would be best case scenario. Or do you feel like the core is young enough that it could survive a young qb while remaining competitive?

Given current cap situation. I dont think jax can make cousins fit
Didn't realize the cap was much less now. Used to be like $60+m not that long ago.

Still, there are ways to work the cap. Eagles we're right at the line and Roseman still finds ways to bring in guys like Alshon, Jernigan, McLeod etc.

With a position as important as QB, I would think they could find a way if they liked a guy.

It's forecasted to be in the teens, with some wind, in Pittsburgh on Sunday. That should be no problem for a technician such as Blake Bortles.
Sounds strange but I think Bortles will be decent.  Past 6 weeks have been first time in his career that people expected W's. Ton of pressure on him to not screw up first Jags home playoff game.

They're underdogs on the road. Few expect them to win. House money., etc

Not great, but i think he'll be decent.

They could swing it. As of now, they are projected to have $17M in cap space. If they brought someone like Cousins on, then Bortles would be out and $19M comes off the books. Ivory will be cut @ $3.6M more and maybe Hurns at $7M.

With that said, I don't think they go in that direction, unfortunately.

Would be awesome, not to mention necessary.

Have you even researched their cap situation? They currently have $17 million available and they gain another $19 million, if and when they cut Bortles. In addition they have some veteran back-ups who could be cut which could save them an additional $10 million or so.

I think signing Cousins or Smith are Jacksonville's best options. With that defense, the time to win is now, so a veteran FA QB is a much better option than a rookie who has to take time to develop.

Case Keenum? 22 TD's vs 7 int's and signed for $2 million to play for the Vikings.
Played one less game than B Bortles and put up better numbers except rushing-320/2 vs 160/1.

You could sign him, another vet, and draft a rookie.

I love the fact that Ben is on the record as saying he wanted to face the Jaguars.

Even if Ben merely wanted a do-over for his 5 INT game earlier this year ... Jags have certainly take this as disrespect.

... Jags defense should be pretty pumped up for this one now.

This was his quote:

“For me, personally, I’d love to prove that five interceptions wasn’t me in that game,”

So the guy wants a chance at redemption for probably the worst game of his career.  He knows that Jacksonville was the toughest out (among the teams that the Steelers would have to face) and still wanted them just for the redemption factor.  Yeah I'm not seeing the whole bulletin board material thing with that quote.

If he had said "I want the Jaguars because they're a weak team", then i can get the whole disrespect/bulletin board.  But people will spin things any way they want and it looks like the Jags may be using it as a sign of disrespect.

Even if he did mean it in a disrespectful way, and I don't think he did, it doesn't matter much. The defense will be pumped up and prepared to play regardless of any statements.

Agreed, the Jaguars are going to be pumped regardless of who they are playing or anything anyone has said.   If you need bulletin board material to get up for a playoff game you're probably going to lose.

Jags fan who is pretty well connected says

@MadeByTim: reading rumors and put me down for jags v eagles (h) and jags v titans (a) as 2018 uk games

From the article that I quoted ....

“I’ll give you guys one guess who you think I want to play,”   Roethlisberger said on his 93.7 The Fan radio show a week ago.

------------------------------

We understand that wasn't meant to be derogatory towards the Jaguars but that quote (taken out of context) can be construed as disrespectful.

Wow if that quote gets the Jags panties in a bunch they sure are a sensitive bunch

Why does everyone hate Blake Bortles?

By Alfie Crow@AlfieBCC Jan 10, 2018, 9:31am EST

You’re probably reading this headline and dying inside from irony, but hear me out. What’s the deal with all these players actively making fun of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles? It’s the most wild thing I can remember, as far as players taking open and specific shots at an active player.

The latest comes from Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard, who picked off Bortles in their Week 17 matchup.

“It’s a playoff game, so it’s not like it’s the preseason where I can go out there, ‘Oh, it’s Brady,’ and I’m chillin,” Byard told Jason Wolff, via the Tennessean. “This is a playoff game. So I don’t really care if it was Joe Montana. You know what I’m saying? I’m trying to go out there and win the game. I want to make him look like Blake Bortles if I can and try to catch a couple picks. Tom Brady is a great quarterback, but it’s a playoff game. I’m not really looking at it like that.”

I can’t remember seeing something like this since the days of Tim Tebow.

We’ve seen shots from Earl Thomas, Jadeveon Clowney, Michael Bennett, Vontaze Burfict, Cam Jordan and more. I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I outwardly disagree with the comments the players made, because I’ve probably been the most critical of Bortles, but it’s a whole different story when players say it about another active player.

For those of you who have a younger sibling, it’s starting to feel like that unwritten rule that you’re permitted to pick on them, but Lord help anyone else who does.

Truly though, I’d love to know what Blake Bortles did to live rent free in all these player’s heads.

I don't see any delusional homers here. I see a bunch of fans excited about their team that just won a playoff game. And therefore, get to play another playoff game. Against a team they beat 30-9 in the regular season on the road. Not saying they will win, but the Jags definitely have a chance. Btw, I am not a Jags fan.
Yeah, Jaguars continue their streak of ridiculous luck.

I'd just like to point out that it's January and we are still talking about Jaguars football and it doesn't even involve the draft. :excited:
Nice.

I'd also like to point out that it's week 2 of the playoffs  ... and 2 AFC South teams are still alive ... and neither are the Colts.

... at the expense of all AFC West teams who are playing golf this week.

Head Coach Doug Marrone and defensive end Calais Campbell receive recognition from the NFL 101 Award

Jaguars Public Relations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone and 10th-year All-Pro DE Calais Campbell were named the AFC Coach of the Year and AFC Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, by the NFL Committee of 101 today. This marks the first time a Jaguars player or coach has received recognition from the NFL 101 Awards, which were established in 1969.

Marrone, who was named head coach of the Jaguars on Jan. 9, 2017 after serving as the team’s interim head coach for the final two games of the 2016 season, finished the regular season with a 10-6 record, which was tied for the league’s biggest win/loss improvement ( 7) among first-year head coaches (tied with the Rams’ Sean McVay). In his first full season as the Jaguars head coach, Marrone led the team to a 10-6 regular season record and an AFC South Division title, which was the team’s first division title since winning the AFC Central in 1999. The Jaguars finished the 2017 season with the top-ranked rushing offense (141.4 yards per game) and  the league’s best pass defense (169.0 passing yards allowed per game). The Jaguars reached the playoffs for the first time in a decade and hosted a playoff game for the first time in 18 years, defeating the Buffalo Bills, 10-3, in an AFC Wild Card matchup.

Campbell, who set the Jaguars record with a career-high and AFC-leading 14.5 sacks this season, was signed as an unrestricted free agent on March 10, 2017. In 2017, Campbell served as an anchor in the Jaguars second-ranked defense, registering 67 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery, which he returned 10 yards for a touchdown. His 4.0 sacks against Houston in the season opener were a single-game franchise record and were the most in a game by an AFC defender this season. Campbell was named a Pro Bowl starter at DE, and earned first-team All-Pro recognition as an EDGE rusher and second-team recognition as interior defensive lineman. Campbell joins Tony Brackens (1999) as the only defensive ends to be named to the Pro Bowl in Jaguars history.

What are the main differences between the matchup with the Steelers this weekend and the matchup earlier this season?  Who's playing, who's not?

Also, did the Steelers overlook the Jags and if so, what were the reasons?

I believe the Steelers didn't take the Jags seriously. No one did, really.

For this game- the Jags have not run the ball well in the latter part of the season. They wore the Steelers out in the second half. Even with their latest injuries, I don't think that'll happen again.

This game will come down to two things, imo-

1. Can Bortles be effective enough to put points on the board, because 10 points isn't going to cut it.

2. Will Antonio Brown be at full strength. If he's not, then that's a giant advantage for the Jags.

I'm too lazy to dig it up but the Steelers sans Shazier are not the same defense.

Is he the biggest player/difference since that first game?

And yes, PItt had to overlook them and then it just cascaded from there.  But still, that game is relevant to this one.

I don’t think the Steelers overlooked the Jags. The Steelers were actually leading the game mid/late into the 3rd until Ben threw 2 straight pick sixes.  Ben had the worst game of his career (credit goes to Jax D).  But the Jax O did very little in that game.

For Pitt, I believe so.

For the Jags, Marcell Dareus is the biggest change. Prior to that trade, they were 30th against the run with 138 ypg (over 7 games). After the trade they were 7th at 99 ypg.

Agreed.  The Steelers were moving the ball well in that game but were unable to score TDs when they were in the redzone.

I think the biggest difference for the Steelers is no Ryan Shazier on defense.  On offense Bryant is playing much better and JuJu is an emerging star.

I think the biggest question going into this game is whether or not AB is healthy and if Ben is sharp.  Of course the Jags defense will have a lot to say about that.

ETA:  I think the Steelers went away from the running game too early in that game.  Bell was having a nice day but the Steelers decided to go pass-happy for some reason.

So somebody post Steeler numbers sans Shazier.  I read it somewhere but am too lazy to dig it up.  He was a difference maker.

I don't have the numbers but I don't think they are needed.  Shazier was the Steelers best defensive player so of course he was a difference maker.

Also, the Steelers' best corner and 2nd best D-lineman got hurt in practice yesterday. So our D might be even weaker when it already sucked against the run.

This game could end up being high scoring, even in the chilly weather.

Steelers D has not been particularly strong over the last 1/3 of season, even with Shazier.  (Opp Pts Allowed)

GB Hundleys (28)

Cincinatti (20) —Shazier hurt

Baltimore (38)

New England (27)

Houston (6)

Cleveland (24)

For all of their considerable offensive talent,  the Steelers do NOT excel at two things that have dogged the Jags defense in the last month- QB bootleg and throwing over middle to TE/FB.

Expecting to see a lot of LeVeon swing passes and quick WR slants off rubs.

Also expecting the Steelers to actually gameplan for this one and mix in some runs early as opposed to the first matchup where rhey blindly threw at Jags strength repeatedly.

Question for Jags fans.  Do they let Pozlusny go offseason and does that mean Jack or Smith goes to Mike? Or do they keep Poz on in the same two-down role?

I don't think they bring Poz back. He just doesn't offer much flexibility. Blair Brown was starting to see more time.

Myles Jack was being groomed for the Mike role prior to the start of the season, but that plan was nixed. I'm not sure what happens with it. They'll leave Telvin at Will though.

Lots of off field stuff going on over there.
There were a few off the field stuff going on in NE as well.     But honestly- I hate any kind of trash talk from my team but ultimately it has zero influence on the outcome of the game. The better team will win tomorrow (unless the refs #### one of us).

I really doubt Bell's comments mean the Steelers are taking the Jaguars lightly.  They are fully aware that this team beat them soundly at home.

And none of the talk matters after kickoff.
