Sorry @otb_lifer I may have figured it out.

I picked up the Areswizard install instructions at like #5 because it was already downloaded. #Themoreyouknow

But after I select it my screen shows some bull#### that seems like spam. For example gotoForum>ares-project_uk instead of repository.aresproject. It's nothing like any tutorial. I'm probably paranoid but I need to do some more googling.

I should probably do this kind of thing sober.
how'd it work out for you?

gonna recommend This Path for anyone who was interested ...

God I'm such a loser. I'm sorry but I'm going to be here asking dumb questions for a while. :bag:

I went to follow a tutorial for TItanium just to get something going and when I went to File Manager, I see Areswizard there along with Noobsandnerds, Husham, tdbwizard etc. How do I use that to install stuff?

Or should I install something like Titanium straight from the tutorials? I might need a class on this
The fact that you're no longer giving away your hard earned money to those corporate leeches make you a winner in our books.  Now it just comes down to how much of a winner you want to be.

Thanks for the help. I restarted everything and am going to start from scratch tomorrow. If you guys have any tips I would really appreciate it, whether it is a build or what programs to add first. We are new at this in our house and I am sure it is something we did wrong, but to tired and angry to try to figure it out tonight.
which version of kodi were you running?

updates?
Still rocking SS, dealing with the 540p while they work. I mean, what am I going to do to make them move faster?

EPG is simple and nice, the 540p streams are rock solid while they do the back-end upgrade to all 720p. I've tried a few others in the meantime for a month, and they still don't compare with constant buffering/dead channels. SS just works, more or less 0 difference from a pay TV provider. They do 720p/1080i for PPV or single games in a time slot (e.g., NHL/NBA playoffs) as a hold over, so that works for me.

So I'm satisfied enough with the functionality of Kodi and my Firestick that I just bought a Fire TV so I can have one set up permanently on my home theater.  I'll also hard-wire for faster speeds.

I didn't do any builds on my stick - just Exodus and Phoenix.

Any recommended builds for the Fire TV box since it's got some more power?

  • I'd like something that can auto-update to the latest versions.
  • I'd like something that lets me use "favorites" or somehow save stuff I want to watch or see.
  • SIMPLE INTERFACE - My wife has no tolerance for confusion, so the simpler the better.
  • I don't need every add-on out there.  I'll truthfully use 3-4 and that's about it.
  • No "adult channels," as the kid will probably figure out how to use this thing before my wife does.
Is it just better to add ad-hoc what I need vs. a build given the above?  If so, any how-to's on how to get some of the favorites working, etc?

I gave up. I was way too baked to be doing anything technical at that point. Thanks for the link. I feel like I've been on that seo-michael site quite a bit in the past few days. Great resource. I have a golfing weekend starting tomorrow so I'll have to play around again next week.

Very interested in this. I just poked around and it looks like $12/month is their best offer. There is a box for "coupon" but I haven't been able to find one that works.

No brainer IMO, but I can't recommend them until the transition is complete to people who've never had it before. If you're willing to bet a 1-month sub for $12 to try them out, can't hurt. I don't want to deal with recommending them to people while they're working to do long term upgrades and random channels aren't in 720p or there are 24/7 channel overrides. .

Total n00b here just flirting with this stuff. Haven't fully cut the cord yet but I just bought a DroidBox. It has dual OS/partition, with Android on one side and LibreElec on the other. Sorry for quoting this post so far out but it's the only LE post really in this thread. Do you have any thoughts on it? Am I correct in my understanding that the LE side would probably run a little cleaner/faster? IIRC the Android side has Kodi 17 but the LE side has 16. I know I would need to update that side but I'm curious what (dis)advantages there might be. I'm not even sure what I'm asking. If you, or anyone else for that matter, have any insight it would be greatly appreciated.
Let me see if I can parse this. Let me know if I'm off track. The quick answer is that the same version of Kodi should run exactly the same in Android or in LibreElec. LE may be marginally faster because Linux is faster than Android, but that shouldn't be noticeable to anyone. Android is much much easier because it's mostly plug and play. A lot of what is discussed in this forum, however, happens within Kodi after it is installed. You can do all of that on either "side" as you mention.

If you use Kodi on the Android side, you simply download Kodi off the Android Market and it would run as is just fine. You would also get the latest version as you update from the market. LibreElec is needed to run Kodi on a Linux platform, I run it on my Pi setup for this. The Kodi that runs on Android or LibreElec are the same... that is, the same version of Kodi on either side would behave and perform exactly the same. LibreElec is technically the operating system in place of Android in this context. It's not like a "build" that many use here, LibreElec doesn't do anything other than provide the base in Linux to run Kodi.

Everything you do within Kodi, like skinning it and adding builds or selecting which add-ons to use, etc., would also behave exactly the same on both sides. Once Kodi is installed, anything that happens within Kodi is universal to all platform. Hope this helps.

I haven't downloaded Kodi since we got the fire tv right after Christmas. Is downloading ES still the best way?
Yup es works just as good. I sideload mine but it's all the same

I am seriously starting to hate this thing. Right outside my door is a lake and I am very close to throwing the fire box in the lake. Here are the steps in order I have done since I got home.

Went into device/developer options. Turned on ADB debugging, USB debugging and apps from unknown sources,.

Went into the search function and typed in ES which brought up ES explorer, proceeded to download it.

Went into ES explorer/favorites/add and typed in http://kodi.tv

Named the file Kodi

Found the file in favorites and clicked on it

Went to the Kodi page I scroll down and the only thing I can find is older releases and it says to click here.

I click here and it asks for a file name, according to the youtube video I watched firetvs are supposed to pick android, so I do.

I am then given 3 choices for x86/ arm/ arm64-v8a/, I have tried all 3 and they all lead to kodi 17.1 krypton.

I double click on the kodi-17.1 Krypton and nothing ever happens.

Please help or if you think I am a lost cause let me know and I will video tape me throwing away the fire box and post it.

After being frustrated and doing some research, I think I need a VPN. My connection is good and have no trouble on my computer or phones, but things I have read a few things that said that internet companies are now blocking links from kodi and that is why my movies were running so slow and why I am having trouble downloading kodi again. Does this sound right or am I just making crap up?

I feel like I am talking to myself, but I don't care. It was the stupid VPN, I got IPVanish and started downloading Kodi instantly. So f u Comcast.

And thanks to everyone in here for helping me and being so patient.

how far is the router to firestick? maybe get a network extender or if its an outdated router upgrade it.

I was using the crappy modem/router combo from Comcast which barely supported the room it was in. I picked up a Linksys AC and the whole house is covered now

I also purchased my own modem too for 2 reasons. No longer paying $10 monthly rental fee & better speeds
My router is roughly about 35ish feet from my living room TV.

We have AT&T Uverse. I have tried an extender in the past and it didn't really work. A friend recommended I buy a new router to replace my current one and then use the old router as an extender. So I've been thinking about doing that if it's not too complicated.

Oddly enough it didn't give me any issues earlier today. I watched the latest episode of Handmaid's Tale without any trouble.

I don't have any advice, I'll defer to the pros in here, but I've wondered if this might not be coming soon as cable companies started losing more and more customers

I am not a pro either, but we were looking up everything and this was the only solution we found. So we found a VPN that had a money back guarantee, that way if it didn't work no harm, and as soon as we finished the VPN set up it took Kodi about 2 minutes to download, got a build and were watching a movie inside of 20 minutes.

Never heard of that stuff happening in the states
ditto - i thought my speed/feed was being throttled back, but then i made the most minimal adjustment of having the 'droid box contact my router, and all was smooth as possible - toss RealDeb as cherry on top, and it's damn near flawless.

I seriously doubt they were blocking links from kodi.  Kodi 17.0 didn't come out until the very end of last year and definitely not 17.1 so I'd guess you were using a 16 version which would have caused all the problems you were having.

Have no limits. Updated it to the latest version which messed me up a little.

i was forced to play around and learned how to adjust a lot of functionality, couldn't be happier.

Also have mine hardwired with a VPN, no issues in my first 3 months.

i think they'll be throttling the netflix, amazon, hulu, and iptv providers of the world long before they care about something used by such a small percentage of the population.

so u're saying we should delete this thread and not increase that said population... this board is world famous u know.

As usual, was lazy in updating to 17.1 and I thought that was issues loading/streaming until the old lady tells me she's been having problems with her youtube workout videos stalling and I realized I just needed to reset the modem and router.     Anyway started everything new and fresh and am trying out a different build: Cellar Door TV.  http://cellardoortv.com/wizard/  It's a little different navigating around and it takes some getting used to, but, it has some features I've never seen before:

1- It lets you choose a setting to clear cache, among others, upon startup which is nice.

2- It has 7 different skins to choose from that are completely customizable within the build.

3- Instead of just a weather widget it has a whole weather section where you can scroll through different cities etc. just like a regular weather phone app.

It also seems to be lighter on the number of addons too.  I didn't count them or anything, but, it seems to just have all the major addons without trying to pack every single possible addon in there like Titanium and No Limits does.  (although you wouldn't know that from the file size)

Cons:

1- The general search option didn't/doesn't work very well.  I had to go into Exodus/Zen to actually get to the working links.

2- The Live TV/IPTV section wasn't populating or working at all.  No big surprise.

I'm finally sort of up and running. I had some random reboots and freezes. Apparently there are some software glitches I have to work through on my box (LibreElec notwithstanding....they have to completely redo the update). After updating some of the apps on the Android side (including up to Kodi 17.2, within there is another glitch that they will be fixing with 17.3 soon) I've actually been able to play around a bit today.

But at any rate to the bolded, I put No Limits on and holy balls that's a lot of stuff. I'm guessing that's not all needed? It's a bit confusing to navigate and know where you're getting things. I did some light research on the Cellar Door Wizard and heard about an Infusion build that's on it. Is that what you're using? Are there any other builds that are bare bones, but still carry essentially everything needed?

Yes, Infusion 4.1 I think. It's kind of like cable tv channels used to be; hundreds of add-ons and you only ever end up using (watching) a handful of then. Exodus and Zen are the two most popular and stable ones. Others like Pheonix, Salts, Bob's etc.

Does one have to remove 17.1 completely to upgrade to 17.3 on Fire TV/Stick? All of the tutorials that I found show removing as a first step. I find it hard to believe that there is no way to update Krypton without losing your addons/build and re-installing. I'm upgrading because of the subtitle vulnerability. TIA

I think the subtitle vulnerability is a scare tactic honestly. I think krypton 17 offers an update check automatically? Atleast mine seemed to before I added titanium

I installed 17.3 on top of 17.1, no problems.

Does anyone know of a good way to find a special version of a movie?  I've heard there's an "Assembly Cut" of Alien 3 that makes it a lot less crappy, and I'd like to find it on Kodi if possible.
