Signed up for the 10-day free trial. Going to come back in. War in a rough patch right now following some server mergers into ours (so many freaking people non-stop zergfest in RVR). Mike, you know me, what would I enjoy now? Either of the two new classes? What's the best solo leveling class now?
Warden is by far the best soloing class, but it is based off of memorizing gambits (skill combos). I haven't played with one much at all yet, just a newbie one I rolled in MoM beta. They are pretty good tanks, almost on par with Guards, but I don't remember you enjoying the tanking part of the game much, even on your champ. It might remind you a little of the skill combo moves from AoC though, not sure as I didn't play that game long enough to really know. Wardens have a lot of ways to keep their morale up, and are supposed to tank more based on avoidance/parry as opposed to the guard's tanking based on mitigations and armour.RK is the proto-typical glass cannon - very high DPS, with the ability to main-heal as well, depending on which way you attune yourself. Cloth armour, so not as survivable as hunters, but DPS should be on par with them or close, after recent adjustments. In fact, because they don't have the same CC or debuffs, they are probably not quite as survivable as LMs, the other light-armour class with tactical damage, but they do kill things faster (in general) so that makes up for it.Both of the new classes, but RKs especially, depend on DoTs rather than large attacks. RK healing is almost all HoTs, but is really nice in that sense, it's almost like your in combat morale regen is really high. When I've played with a RK doing main healing, morale seems a lot more steady group-wide, rather than down then up like Minstrel healing (more burst.) That being said, RKs sometimes can't keep up when burst healing is needed.Personally, seems like you enjoyed your minstrel and hunter, so you may enjoy the RK quite a bit. Good to great DPS for soloing, decent healing for group utility or you can go DPS if healing is covered. You know the other classes, except for what, LM and Guard? You know I'm partial to the LM, but if you didn't like them before you probably had reasons for that. And Guards honestly, kill too slow, and that is just painful. And there really isn't but one or two places where a guard is kinda required, so group utility has been very low.BTW, if you are interested in a kin invite, let me know. Certain people aren't playing much (if at all) anymore, so...yah. I'll understand either way. Regardless, send me a tell so I can get you on my friends list, or post a char name here once you get in.

I'm terrified of this thread.

I like Tolkien a lot, and used to be an avid Guild Wars player. From what I understand, Guild Wars is one of the worst MMORPGs out there --- but I still liked it. Everyone says WOW and LOTR blow it away.

I'm terrified I'll read this thread, post a bit, get the 10 day trial, and wake up in September surrounded by pizza boxes and empty potato chip bags, with 30 lbs on my gut and a soft cast on my wrist.

:runs away from thread:

GET BEHIND ME SATAN!

Guild Wars wasn't an MMO, since mostly everything was instanced. An MMO has an open world. Hard to compare the two.LOTRO doesn't require the time investment that WoW does, which is a HUGE plus.

I KNEW the others classes but there's a year of changes and patches between me and the last time I played.Rune Keeper it is for now. Will go by the name of Humbula in honor of our BF2 roots."Tell not received. You must be a friend of the target or in the same kinship or fellowship."BOooooo

Could you explain this please? Also, my wife preemptively hates you.
to "progress" in LOTRO, you only need to put in time in small chunks. an hour here, an hour there. i think the longest time commitment out there would probably be about 3 hours. in WoW, to "progress", you had to routinely devote 3-5 hour blocks of time.

you could easily play both games for 40+ hours a week, if you choose. but LOTRO doesn't demand it, while WoW does. i stopped playing WoW before Burning Crusade, which was years ago. i've heard that they have tuned it down a notch since those days. still doesn't change the massive gear grind of WoW. (ie - get gear from A before you can reasonably progress to B, repeat ad nauseum -- although, unfortunately, LOTRO has introduced this at end game now too with radiance gear.)

ETA for clarity: when you're playing an MMO, you 'want' to progress. you're addicted to the thought of progression. so, if it requires a 4 hour block of time to do so, you're going to want to do that. wives don't like that.

I've checked out some YouTube clips, and I'm unimpressed. I'm sure I'd be totally into it if I tried the game, but I won't.

When Guildwars got played out I started reading more and took up painting and the violin. I also spend more time with my family.

I'm quite happy to fend off your temptations, Satan. :)

(ps - it looks cool though!)

here's how i would play this game:read The Fellowship of the Ringwatch movieplay the game til level cap with one character to your liking, for the storytelling. see what characters you recognize, see what places you've read about. enjoy the story.then move on.about six months of enjoyment that will make you appreciate the story all the more.

Good Posting. The game remains true to the books. You will encounter many of the characters.

I am liking the Rune Keeper so far. Really reminds me of a Priest of Mitra from AoC which I liked. Glad I can heal and do some DPS. How does the DPS scale? How does the healing scale? Can a Rune-Keeper fill either role in a fellowship?

It can heal, but not generally in line with a minst. You will see fellowships ask for a minstrel first, then RK. However, a good RK could heal on line or better than a crappy minst.

This is the Turbine I remember.

Update: We are extending the downtime window to 2:00 PM Eastern (-4 GMT). Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience!!

One thing I really like about Warhammer is, if they have a maintenance window from 6AM-12PM, 9 times of out of 10, the servers are back up at 10:30AM. They almost NEVER push back maintenance windows. Patches, yes, sometimes that causes an extension.

If this is truly "maintenance" then there's no reason it should get extended.

I leveled a RK to 30 before this latest patch. In my experience, the RK can single and two-target heal better than a minstrel. However, they cannot compete with a minstrel in multi-target healing.Their damage was not very good when I played -- although, most of that was because of the "ramp up" time it would take to get attuned to do damage. Most mobs would take you to half health before you were maxing your damage potential. In long boss fights, you'd shine though. Don't know how this has changed.

My rk is level 44, DPS is scaling great so far. I expect them to be toned down a lot in the near future. To be honest, I really don't see a need for hunters anymore with a RK around.Healing-wise, they just don't have the instant cast power heals of the minstrel. I haven't done any intense fellowship healing, so I can't give an accurate depiction of that.

I am a big solo player mostly because I do my leveling during periods of gameplay where I might have to stop playing very suddenly without much warning. I can't leave groups hanging when I do that. At the same time, I don't want to have a toon that is ubiquitous and hard to get into PUGs, a la Champ or Hunter.I leveled up my Minstrel before they had any sort of offensive pop that got added later. I reckoned after those changes they might be pretty decent solo levelers. If I recall, they weren't too bad before. The downside is now, I am flat broke and have to rely on quest EQ. I sure wish I could get my other account unlocked and have my 20% tools and GM Armor, Weaponsmith, Tailor, Cook, Jeweller, et al.

lol, just give a holler if you want some equipment. Don't go through life with quest rewards.

Also, yes, solo minstrels rock as well when they are traited for dps.

I am thinking about calling Turbine tonight (live support between 4PM and 8:15PM) and begging and pleading to get my account back.

GL with that. Given the craptastic patches of late, I would think they would take anyone back just to get your money again.

Anyone know how the RK's fare in PvMP?
Depends. Insano on Gladden can do very well in sparring with kiting and all, but RK's are insanely fragile and probably go down faster than a minstrel, which is pretty darn fast, nonetheless in PvMP.

We are extending today's downtime to include additional investigation and resolution on errors encountered during the weekend, including rubberbanding, invisible walls, and World Queue errors. We will update this message with an estimated uptime when it is available. Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve these issues!
I used to wonder why Turbine ever put an end-time on their windows.

Oh, and I almost forgot how they take down the forums when they bungle maintenance windows too so people can't ##### and moan.
Exactly. The best part of it all, though, is how right underneath their telling you about the problems they are having, they ask you to vote for them as best Dev or some such BS. :goodposting: There are a LOT of LOTRO players voting against them every time to send a message.

Awesome. Servers came back up from the extended down time which they did to fix issues, and now the problems are worse than they were beforehand.

Bravo, Turbine.

FYI - If anyone sends me mail, I cannot access it until I purchase an actual account. Part of me doesn't want the old account, but to miss out on those guys would be a shame. I sent all my money and resources off to other people, so their all but naked.

As for RKs healing scaling, it scales well, they just don't have the big oh-#### heals a minstrel does. DPS is insane, but getting agro can equal dead RK quickly.

As for resources, whether you get your acc't unlocked or not, I can get you some coinage (you dumped a decent amount to me when you left anyways, so it's only fair.) Just let me know.

BTW, I don't usually play Monday-Wednesday right now - schoolx2 nights and a night with no gaming for the wife (generally end up just watching TV, but it makes her happy, generally.) Sometimes I'll jump on late Wednesday if class gets out early.

Really kinda liking the RK so far....I feel like I can get right up in the mix and the HOTS keep me alive well enough through the fights...killed a +1 elite today pretty easily.

I sat on hold with Turbine tonight, doesn't sound good...They did give me an appeal e-mail and I claimed it wasn't me. I claimed it might have been a guildie who was angry I left. It's a little scary. All you need to know is someone's e-mail address and you could list their account for sale and get them banned.

D'oh, died at 16...lost my shot at the title.

Well you know what they say, Shawn - if you die before 20, delete and start again. :goodposting:If you need any help or stuff, you know I would be happy to help as well. Have all the crafting masteries to make stuff.I have been thinking about trying my hand at a dwarf RK - never done a dwarf alt before.

Well, I didn't do anyresearch. I thought only Dwarves can be rune-keepers. I won't play an elf, so I guess I made the right choice.I am going to buy the full game and give it a month to see if I like to play again. All but giving up on my main account. With the additions of the new content, has the leveling path changed? Any new places to level before Angmar and Misty Mountains?

Shawn - do not buy the whole game - I have an extra I bought for $5 - can send you the code for say $3 to recoup my stupidity for buying one? It is also collectors so u get the stupid in-game crap. Were you around when they redid Angmar to make it easier and more solo-friendly? The hell with Fornost.....Oh, and I already bought it today at Target...sorry :)3 month signup

Think I will get my LM lvl'd for now, then maybe look at an RK. Also have my capt sitting at 52, so who knows what I will do. I am pretty sure I do not want to go radiance set hunting with them, but I guess you never know how crazy I might be. I do have the double 3-piece sets for each of the capt and LM already in their bank before they went BOA, so at least they will not be total rejects gear-wise.

Okay, so it sounds like essentially the game is unchanged up to about level 45. Then the MoM expansion stuff kicks in, like the new zones, the legendary items and such. I will need to get in vent with someone and walk through all this with them. I don't want to miss out on something on the way up.

Hey Maelstrom, what items should I be looking for for gear, aside from radiance, for my LM? Think I am gonna hit that next, since I have kindred in LothL on my top 3 and all their gear pretty much set.

I'll have to get back to you on this one, after checking my vaults. I'm using 4/6 rad gear, plus 2 purple items (non-set rad head/shoulders are crappy). But I've saved a few things that seemed interesting through the levels, so I'll see what I can recommend that doesn't come from the instances.Shawn, be happy to give you a little guidance come lvl45 - basically just need to go down, get your legendary started (book 2 ch1-8(?)) and then head back to questing. That way you get the leg. grind...er...weapon started leveling a little sooner.Turbine adjusted the XP curve a little so the levels in the mid-late 30s should be a little bit better placed, but hasn't touched many of the mid-level areas except the starter areas so far. There are a ton of options in the mid-40s on up, but before that it's still pretty straightforward. Still a little jumping around in the late 20s, early 30s.

Yeah, esp at 50. If you have a 50 maxed pre-MoM and log him in, first XP you get takes you to almost 52.

Since I'm coming back, I was thinking about getting back into Order of the Pilum. Who has lead for that now or has it gone away?

yeah, that was fun stuff. Your mic was cutting out, I'd get like 2 seconds on and 2 seconds off. If I was unresponsive or giving strange responses, it wasn't because I don't like you,
