So Monday night is the last night to really exploit the crap out of some instances. I am thinking about running GS around 5+ times for pure loot. Any FBG's in?

methinks you're playing the game for the wrong reasons =)update from landroval: i've leveled 6 characters to level 20 with the undying titles (RK, Warden, Champ, Hunter, Burglar, Cap) and the Burglar is by far my favorite. going to be bringing him up to max level, without a doubt. glad i went through the effort of playing multiple classes to level 20 carefully to really give a feel for using skills effectively. didn't bother with guardian or minstrel since i hate tanking and healing. if you're up for some role-playing on landroval, feel free to shoot a whisper to Crafty

the name goes with the surname, so the name you'd read is Crafty Jackthere are some RP elitists for sure, but most people are pretty forgiving

Nah, just want to get a couple of insidious cuffs and maybe a diamond stud for my champ. :X Cururist might be nice, too. Seems like to get the rad gear for my champ, I have ended up running the instance with my minst and then bringing in my champ to roll on the items.I understand shutting down obvious exploits and wholeheartedly agree. The problem I have with Turbine is they decide you have to try and do a fight the way they want you to do it, and if you figure out a better way, they change it all to make you do it the way they think it should be run. That sucks. For instance, all the bosses in the Moria instances are now immune to all slows and CC. What kind of crap is that? The final boss fight in 16th is hard enough to do without killing any #######g bugs, but now you cannot hamstring or quick shot slow him, which is gonna make it that much harder. I do not see the sport in that on their part.

So how ridiculous does it get on that RP server? Are the people pretty far out there, or are most just on there to avoid the stupid stuff that is always going through the OOC and global channels?

So is anyone up for any loot runs tonight? We could do GS, but I also know how to 3-man the Forgotten Treasury if we have a burg, a DPS and a healer. That goes away Tuesday, as well - we could farm that Amber Ring.

Not ridiculous at all. I'd say about half of the people role play at all, and then only half the time at most. Aside from Bree and the Prancing Pony, it can be hard to even tell you're on a RP server. The thing that gives it away the most are the kinship names, many in elvish -- not something I'm into, but to each his own. No kinships named Uber Pwnzors or Chaos Ninjas or anything like that, which is nice. It's fun once in a while to recruit a full fellow to role play through an instance instead of mindlessly killing everything for the phat loot and returning to town looking for the next carrot. I find I enjoy the content more this way.

Dang, servers crashing today as they prepare for the patch tomorrow.
I'm using the direct download on my home computer to get the patch (800+ MB)Hopefully it's all ready by the time I get home tonight so I can install and play Tuesday once servers are patched.
Thankfully, I DL'd last night and have it on a flash drive to update all my computers. Direct exe file was about 950 MB.

Lots of technical difficulties for Turbine today apparently. Guess I might as well get all of my work ahead of schedule to enjoy book 7 tomorrow. :hot:

Well, I'm officially bumming now. Walked into my office tonight to the smell of burnt plastic/electronics. Not sure what, yet, but my computer seems to be toast. Could be a simple as a power supply, and I think I have a spare I may test tomorrow night when I get home from work (too late tonight when I got home to be messing with it.)

If it's not the power supply, I may be really bumming, since my hard drives are in a Raid 0 off the mobo raid controller. Doh! That is a mistake I will not be making again if I can't get things going again.

Anyways, out of the game until I can get this fixed up. I could use a little break anyways, I guess. I am downloading all the updates on my laptop now, but I really doubt I can do anything besides log in and chat/say hi/etc. on this. Great for school, but not a gaming machine at all.

So...it was time for an upgrade anyways, and my wife had told me to start pricing components...got any deals on your radar MC? What kind of system would I need to sort of future proof me and allow me to play LOTRO on Ultra High on a 22" 1680x1050 monitor with goodies turned on? Without going too crazy - can I build something that would do that for $1500? I have a relatively new videocard, but not opposed to completely rebuilding - its an ATI 2900PRO 512MB. It was limited pretty hard by my CPU/RAM (AMD 2800X2/2GB DDR1) in my current rig, I think, but still could go to High with AAx8 on for solo play. I'd usually turn it down for any kind of group stuff though.

So, what should I be looking for? I don't want the absolute bleeding edge (Intel I7?), but probably the most cost effective step just below that. I had been partial to AMD/ATI combos in the past due to the price savings generally associated with them, but definitely willing to step over to Intel since that seems to be where it's at now.

I should add - I have 3 250GB hard drives, was thinking of running them in a raid (whichever one would give me 500GB room with full ability to restore should 1 die) on a new computer, with an additional fast 500GB+ for the OS and programs. It's not that the 750GBs I currently have are completely full...but enough used that I may as well get more HD space while I do this.

I have a sound card that I may use (Razor) or not, and I can probably reuse my current case. So I really only NEED CPU/Mobo/RAM/Additional HD and (maybe) a newer video card.

Let me get back to this a bit later, Mael. about your luck. Hope it is the PSU.

Well, my laptop struggles, but it will run it now that I have 2GB of Ram (last time I tried I had 1GB, I think.) Not exactly pretty, but I can play solo. Even went into 16th hall to kill a few orcs, and didn't do too bad, but I wouldn't want to be relied on in an instance (lagged out a few times).

I'm getting 10-20FPS on Very Low with draw distance on Medium, I think. Everything that can be turned off has been. But it IS playable, just painful.

Thanks for the parts list Shawn.

I have the following:

Case

The following (assuming they weren't damaged) :

Hard Drive (3x250GB) - may add a decently fast 250B for OS/programs, and put these 3 in a RAID 0+1 (500GB with data security)

Sound Card

Could use Video Card (ATI 2900PRO) but if it is in the budget I would probably upgrade to something (like 4870)

DVD R/RW, although I may get a new one - it works, but the drawer doesn't open without a paper clip push

USB card reader/floppy

Here's what I came up with playing around on Newegg:

PC Power & Cooling 750W Power Supply - Retail $109.99

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail $279.99

ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $249.99

OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) $104.99 -$20 MIR = $84.99

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card - Retail $189.99

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $79.99 (for my comp)

LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA - OEM $25.99

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $64.99 (upgrade for wife's comp)

Subtotal: $1,106 + S/H

(Alt Ram - other one seems like a faster ram and is cheaper with the MIR)

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) - Retail $94.99

Is the stock cooler for the CPU good enough or should I get an aftermarket one? If so, suggestions?

I would say the stock cooler is probably fine unless you plan on OCing it, but if you want that i7 there is not much of a need to OC it. Looks great. My Q6600 is envious.

You can do better than that on the Processor. I paid $229 at MicroCenter literally AT the store. Also, people have OC'ed to 3.0 and 3.2 on the stock cooler. Why bother, it's a blazing fast chip. Great deal on the Video card for the 1GB....

Yep, not planning on OCing this one, I'm starting to think that may have been what happened with my current rig. I'll check around on the proc prices, but figured I'd jump right to the i7 rather than go with something like the e8400. Could save a bit of $$ with a e8400 and an x38 (instead of x58) mobo, but the prices aren't too totally ridiculous for the i7, and eventually programs and games will take advantage of it. I don't want to worry about it for a few years also, if I can help it.

Any last minute suggestions? Really debated on getting a 10k 150GB WD Raptor for a boot/OS/Programs drive, but for almost double the cost of the 640GB one, I just didn't think it would be worth it, despite what would probably be a nice speed boost.

Also looked in the Nvidia 260 core 216 video cards, since they are now basically the same price +/- as the ATI 4870, but I think I'm gonna stick with the 4870. They recently fixed up their drivers a bit, which tightened up a few issues they were having.

edit: I did check and there is a MicroCenter near me, and I've already reserved a chip there to pick up tomorrow/Monday. Thanks for the tip!

edit again: Got the CPU in hand, newegg order placed for the rest of the components. I should get them on Wed/Thurs - which is nice since I have Thursday off work, so should be able to build it then, if I remembered everything.

Well, crap. Turns out I have no job as of the end of July. Literally found out less than a day after I clicked Submit. Oh well, I needed a new computer, but I probably would have gone quite a bit more conservative had I known.

Dang man, sorry about that. At least you know you will be set on your computer for a long time. Gonna try to run 2.6.8 tonight if anyone wants to join and such.

Sorry to hear that my man. Look at it this way, you'll have a lot of free time to enjoy the new rig. Hang in there.

 As long as you can "afford it" and didn't borrow from a loan shark to buy it, then yeah, that's how you have to look at it. Might as well be broke with a nice PC.

Also, it was good to get that much notice.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Much appreciated. Yah, no loan sharking, I had the money. And now I should end up with a nice computer to play with. I may be able to get a job with the new company they are forming, but I'm gonna check out other options as well - the newspaper / printing industry ain't the best place to be going forward, and I'm ready for a change. Maybe this is the push I need to get things moving in a new direction.

Heck, I was thinking about trying for the sales job at the online version of the newspaper they are gonna get going - I know enough about online marketing to have a shot, I think. I haven't done sales in a few years except for my freelance stuff, but it isn't something you really forget how to do.

And yes, the notice was nice to have, they could have just let things play out and let us know much sooner to the time they decide to go live.

Got all my parts tonight. Micro$oft is being a PITA as I was trying to get a 64bit version of my copy of Vista, and they are trying to tell me my code is invalid, so I have to call them and sort that out. I'll probably just load Vista32 on the new rig until then.

Good news, is that I am currently using my old rig - it was just the power supply, I put my new one in and it booted right up. So now I need to decide if I even consider getting a second PS and setting this comp. up as a file/print server or something. Haven't decided yet, and probably won't for a bit.

I have tomorrow off work, so computer building time it is.

:)Does anyone have a champ on here but me? I have really been loving playing the champ of late - got him all the way through book 7 and am grinding his rep and barter items to get the LothL boxes once they are fixed. Having unlocked deathstorm, wow - I do Spider Nest and hit the sprint and aggro every #######g spider in there - pop controlled burn, then deathstorm and sit back and enjoy the massive mayhem. Good times. I sometimes need dire need, but never the man heal for that one. :hot: activated!

Shawn had a champ (might still have a lower level one?) Mine is lvl12 or something like that. Was thinking about leveling one of either my champ or hunter after I get my guard to 60. Not sure which yet, but I need a high level DPS class (DPS LM is nice, but....)

Got all my parts tonight. Micro$oft is being a PITA as I was trying to get a 64bit version of my copy of Vista, and they are trying to tell me my code is invalid, so I have to call them and sort that out. I'll probably just load Vista32 on the new rig until then.Good news, is that I am currently using my old rig - it was just the power supply, I put my new one in and it booted right up. So now I need to decide if I even consider getting a second PS and setting this comp. up as a file/print server or something. Haven't decided yet, and probably won't for a bit.I have tomorrow off work, so computer building time it is.
Two-Box!!!I dual-box my alts up to max level in Warhammer that way.

The whole reason I made my champ, Area, was for the one grind spot outside of Barad gularan where the dwarves were dropping elite coin instead of regular. They patched it when I got to level 46

There is a lvl 60 champ named Area running around Moria last I saw. Been a bit since I saw him, but still. . . :coffee:Hmmm, nm - there is a lvl 50 champ named Area last logged on June 22. I swear I saw someone named very close to Area and I thought of Shawn.

Broadway - I created a FBG chat channel for you to join. Got Maelstrom and AmishBoy in last night. Just join channel FBGchat on all your alts and we can communicate a bit easier than tells and such if we want to talk to all of us.

It's alive! Got my computer all built and my LOTRO updates downloaded, so I popped in for a bit tonight. Works real smooth - 60-100FPS with everything up in a busy 21st hall - DX10, UltraHigh with 8x antialiasing, etc.

Only real irritating issue was getting the Raid array setup and recognized, while still keeping the 640GB drive seperate for the OS/Programs/Backups of critical data. Also, still haven't been able to get 64bit OS software from Microsoft, I need to call in now to prove my copy is legit, even though it authenticated just fine during the install. So I'll have to reinstall everything again once I get my hands on a 64 bit copy (if I have to buy new, I may just wait for Windows 7 and deal with losing 3GB of the 6GB RAM.)

I'm really impressed with the i7/4870 combo. No overclocking, and yet everything was very smooth. And wow - the few times I've popped it up to Ultra High don't do it justice to just walking around with it on that all the time. Big difference, almost like a brand new game graphically speaking.

Yeah, it is an amazingly gorgeous game.

Kick ###. Nice to be relatively cutting edge eh?This is the closest to a top of the line machine as I've ever been.

So I was lured by Broadway getting a 2nd age hunter spear from a LothL box today and decided to try my hand with the champ items. I got a 22500 IXP token. Was so pissed I just logged off and canceled my current LOTRO subscription which ends in June. If they fix it by then, I will probably re-up. If not, I might just finally see the light in this stupid grind.

I wouldn't turn any of those in for a while. There are dev posts in the forums stating that there are changes coming, and while they won't state what they are (duh), it can only be to reduce the poor loot that comes from these boxes.

That being said, I really don't know how much play time I will have going forward. I'm looking into night jobs for some extra cash to help hold me over during a job search and no clue what kind of schedule I will have after July. Heck, I may end up with lots of time to play for a little while, but that wouldn't be very productive towards finding a job

Anyways, enough about that - the Lotro servers are down, gonna go jump on BF2. I'll see if I can't find the BF2 thread and bump it also so I can find voice info (in-game doesn't want to work for me.)

my sub from initial purchase goes til June. i'm already feeling burned out. i think that i'm probably just not as interested in gaming as i used to be -- not because of a change in my interests, but because of a true lack of quality games available. i will probably push myself to get to max level with 1 char in that time, and experience every instance/zone in the game. then, i'll move on. i might revisit when the next expansion comes along.

Yes it is. And of course now I get to reinstall Windows all over again in a few days - Microsoft finally folded and is sending me a 64 bit copy of Windows through their alternate media program. So, to see my other 3GB of Ram, I'll probably install the 64 bit OS when it gets here.

Signed up for the 10-day free trial. Going to come back in. War in a rough patch right now following some server mergers into ours (so many freaking people non-stop zergfest in RVR). Mike, you know me, what would I enjoy now? Either of the two new classes? What's the best solo leveling class now?
