I don't think it was all made up as it went along, that is disingenuous.
I don't see how you could watch the whole series and conclude this.
Umm, there were plenty of plot lines that they alluded to really early on that they hooked into later in the show. Making it up as they went a long is not true and I was very much into the threads on here about the show since the beginning.
Let's just start with Jack's vision of his Dad in the first few minutes of the show. Pretty sure we know it was the smoke monster all along and they got back to that quite a bit in terms of the visions that were interactions with people. I was one of the people in those threads, probably the main one, that mentioned all the spots where I thought we were seeing those smoke monster visions very early in the show.
Anyway, I am not going to debate this. If you missed the tie-ins, no wonder why you didn't like it and thought they made it all up. I will just disagree wholeheartedly even if I didn't like every answer they gave.
I haven't watched or thought a whole lot about the show since it ended, so I'm not sure about the specific thing you're talking about with the vision of Jack's Dad. How do you know that at the time they showed the vision, the writers knew it would eventually be revealed to be the smoke monster? It seems just as likely that the smoke monster explanation was something they came up with later.
Instead of that, let's talk about something I remember a little better -- the numbers. Remember how Hurley won the lottery using the numbers, and then the radio broadcast on the island was the numbers, and there was some crazy dude in an asylum chanting the numbers, and then they had to punch the numbers into the computer in the hatch, and they kept showing the numbers everywhere? And every time we saw the numbers in a new context we said "WOW!!! Those numbers are the same numbers we've seen in all these other places, this is really getting interesting! I wonder what it means."
And everybody watching was posting theories about the significance of the numbers, and what it meant that these same numbers were popping up in so many different contexts that seemed unconnected. We were all trying to come up with theories about what those numbers were all about. And they were selling T-shirts with the numbers on them, and it was one of the biggest gimmicks from the early seasons of Lost, you really couldn't avoid people writing and talking about the stupid numbers.
Well, it turns out that the numbers meant nothing. Yeah, on some side website they later made up some ridiculous thing about what the numbers meant, but it didn't explain in any way all the different places the numbers appeared. The whole thing was just bull####. We were trying to figure out a mystery that wasn't a mystery at all. Every time we said "WOW", we were only saying "WOW" because we thought that we had just discovered another piece to the puzzle. We thought we were getting closer to figuring out what we had all been trying to figure out all along. But there was no puzzle. It was just a bunch of puzzle pieces in a box that don't fit together or make a picture. We were all duped.
