***OFFICIAL*** Minnesota Vikings 2016 Season Thread (1 Viewer)

What do we know about Diggs' status at this point? Any homers out there have any insight? Really struggling with this fella this season. I've left 50+ points on the bench and now he's gimpy in my lineup.

Diggs is fine and should have another good game against the Panthers.

Rhodes active is awesome.

I think Zimmer frustrates Cam a bit this week. Barr limits Olsen and MIN D gets it done. Thielen TD catch over the middle. McKinnon TD catch on swing pass.

CAR D not sharp mentally due to AD being out.

Vikings (-6.5) win outright 20-17.

VERY tough week to call ..

Can the Defense contain Newton, Olsen & Benjamin?

Can Bradford, Diggs and Rudolph move the ball consistently vs. Panthers D?

Can Asiata/McKinnion do enough in the Running game to keep the Panther Defense "Honest"?

Think the Vikings D will keep it close, but have to give this one to the Panthers at home.. 20-13...
Very glad to have been proven wrong!!!!!  3-0 thanks to the  new Purple People Eaters!! :)

Why is that?

From what I saw of Waynes against the Packers, he was playing more man coverage early on and that is where some of the PI calls happened. Waynes was benched briefly for Alexander who did fine on the couple plays he was in. When Waynes came back in it looked like they were having him play zone which fits his play style better. They ended the game with Waynes interception.

Waynes did have an interception of Russell WIlson in the playoff game against Seattle as well.

I do think Rhodes matches up very well against the larger WR. So it would be great if he is healthy enough to play against Carolina. They may even have him play man on KB a lot, as they have done in the past having Rhodes follow Calvin around.

I think Waynes is much faster than Benjamin and may do well against him, but he isn't as experienced as Rhodes playing tight man coverage.
I'm more than happy to admit I was wrong on this one.

I am a bit stupefied by how well this team adjusts their game plan. If the Vikings were going to lose a game on the road, this one definitely seemed like it would be it. They looked shaky at the beginning of the game but then just completely stopped the Panthers offense from that point forward.

I love how this team plays. So much heart and smarts.

We cannot lose if we do not let the other team score.

SKOL!!!  :excited:

I admit it, I'm surprised they won this game. What a defense!! Those guys must love playing for Zimmer. Griffen working on an all pro season.

The o-line was significantly better after Alex Boone got hurt near the end of the first half. I'm not saying he was the main problem or the only problem but they sure didn't seem to miss him today

I was just mentioning the same thing in the McKinnon thread.

Part of it was just quicker timed passes as well. But I agree they didn't seem to be allowing so much penetration by the defense after Boone exited.

I picked the Panthers to win in my pickem league.  :bag:

Zimmer has this Defense playing out of its mind right now.  It is pretty cool to see now that he has his players in his system and it looks like this team will run through a brick wall for him. It also looks like the team is taking the same approach with Treadwell that it took with Waynes last year in that they are going to have to earn playing time instead of getting it just because they are a 1st rounder.  This could be a very fun team to watch this season and beyond.

  Mike Zimmer.
Totally agreed. Who remembers the days where we got into the same defensive positions pre-snap on every down, with a soft cover two zone? As much as I loved the explosive offenses like '98 and '04, it's nearly as fun to see a defense confusing the heck out of an opposing offense.

I didn't really notice any major failures by Clemmings at LT so that is a good thing.

They did give up 2 sacks. One by Thomas Davis the other by Lavar Edwards. Not sure who gave those up. I did see McKinnon get destroyed on a block but I don't remember is Sam got the ball off on that one or not. Giving up two sacks isn't that bad.

The playbook and game plan on offense will keep expanding as Bradford gets more time with the offense.

They play the Giants next week who seem to have imporved quite a bit on defense. They will have their hands full against the Giants receivers, but the defensive backs seem more than capable of handling it. Should be another good test.

Xavier Rhodes had the most defensive snaps out of all of the corners. So his knee injury did not seem to limit his playing time.

Snap counts for the corners.

X Rhodes CB 57 74%
T Newman CB 53 69%
C Munnerlyn CB 50 65%
T Waynes CB 39 51%
M Alexander CB 9 12%
M Sherels CB 4 5%

Sherels only played when Munnerlyn went out.

I was sort of surprised that Alexander or Waynes didn't take over as the slot corner and they used Sherels instead. I thought Sherels did fine on his few snaps although obvious over matched from a height disadvantage.

Landing in MN at 3:30pm on Monday for business meetings on Tuesday.  Combing Craigslist/Stubhub now.  Will be there! Have Vikings D as well so hoping they lay out Eli.  If any FBG's will be there I'm going to try and get downtown early for a beer or three...Or if you have a ticket to sell let me know.

I'd avoid the stadium area the 2 hours before pregame, particularly if you are hoping for 3 beers. I haven't found an easy way to buy beer there without entering the stadium. I stood in line in the huge beer tent for 45 to get one beer at the Packer game and suspect that will be the same all year with sellouts and people wanting to take in the stadium atmosphere. Biffy lines were almost as bad. I'll probably do all my pregaming go forward at Sneaky Pete's. It's on a light rail stop 10-12 blocks away and a short ride (congested if you wait too long) or 15 minute walk. Might be busier than last year but Wally the Beerman (local legend) vends canned beer from an iced tub that you can buy pretty much on the spot.

I was amazed at the way the skinny Danielle Hunter pancaked Michael Oher in less than a second and went and got Cam for the safety.  Before I saw the replay, I assuming he was unblocked since he got there so quick.  He is one of those rare "developmental prospects" that may actually live up to his massive potential.
Hunter has been impressive.

Tooting my own horn here I did identify Hunter as a player to target in one of the NFL mock drafts here, although I think I was suggesting him as a player for Denver to pick.

Glad we got him instead.  :D

Hunter is a physical freak, I would say even more of a freak than Griffen was when he came into the league.  It is going to be interesting to watch him continue to grow under Zimmer and what he can accomplish.  If the line continues to develop, it could make the line of Allen, Williams wall, and Robison look pretty pedestrian.

One thing I find interesting is that during his time in Cinnicinnati, Zimmer's D never produced a lot of sacks.

Appreciate the advice.   Was in a team meeting the morning Prince died.  Decided to all go downtown.  Went to club after club but ended up at Sneaky Pete's.  Got a table when near empty, then it got packed.  At least they played Prince music all night.  And that stripper pole got used.  My coat got stolen, but that's another story.  Not a bad place to pre-game at all. I'll likely go there.  Landing in an hour. Ryder Cup Sat Sun then MNF. Can't wait.  Huge week for the city.

Dunlap and Michael Johnson are a bit taller, longer DEs compared to Griffen. The Bengals were top 5 in sacks in 2011 and 2012. They were slightly above average in sacks in 2013.

Geno Atkins highest sacks was in 2012 with 12.5

Michael Johnsons highest sacks was in 2012 with 11.5

Dunlaps highest sacks was last season.

The defensive line will get even better if Shariff Floyd can get healthy and contribute. Zimmer seems to be unhappy about him being unavailable so often. Making it work without him.

If the Vikings do not keep Floyd then another under tackle will be needed as Tom Johnson is getting old. Zimmer has gone out of his way to praise Shamar Stephen though.

It sounds like the Giants secondary is pretty banged up so if the Vikings offensive line can do a good job of protecting Bradford we may have some success throwing the ball.

Pre-Zimmer days I'd be worried about a let down game after the win's vs. Packers and Panthers.. But Zimmer is a different breed and won't allow that.

Think our Defense can shutdown the Giants offense, and our Offense should be able to move the ball enough...

23 - 10 Vikings

Not enough talk about how dominate the Vikings defense has been this year. Zimmer isnt getting enough credit for what he has done.

I dunno about that. The Vikings seem to be a pretty popular topic recently even with media outside of the loop after how they handled Carolina.

Of course I am interested enough that I have listened to and read a lot of these things over the past week. There hasn't been a lack of discussion about how well the defense has been playing, even among folks who are not Vikings fans or who would normally find other teams to talk about.

I think several of the best examples of that have been linked in this thread recently, but there are many others as well.

Some of the folks chattering about it obviously are not very familiar with the team and they make some ignorant statements even while touting the defense.

While the Carolina game was awesome I have consumed enough of this stuff over the past week that I have become somewhat bored of talk about that game and ready to move on.

I haven't heard anything new in regards to Treadwell being closer to starting since Zimmer said that he needs to practice better to get on the field.

After the bye week seems like a reasonable guess if he is ready by then. I would think Charles Johnson needs to do something on the field to keep his playing time. I discussed this a bit more in depth in the Treadwell thread

I do think its possible that Patterson might gain more playing time before Treadwell if Johnson continues to not contribute, but that is pure speculation on my part based on Patterson showing some improvement playing WR in limited action so far.

Pattersons offensive snaps have been 5 then 3 then 5 in the first 3 games.

Charles Johnson has played 128 snaps over 3 games thus far which is 73% of the plays. He has 10 targets 3 receptions which is not much for the amount of playing time he has had.

To put this in better context Patterson has 2 rushing attempts 6 yards 2 targets 2 receptions 14 yards for a total of 20 yards which is exactly the number of yards Charles Johnson has on his 3 receptions so far, despite playing 115 more offensive snaps.

Charles Johnsons 30% catch rate is the lowest on the team and he is only getting 2 yards per target, so unless Johnson starts producing more it is pretty difficult to justify the playing time he has received.

4 and SKOL!!!

Great defense again all night, really impressed with the coverage by our defensive backs. It still doesn't look pretty but who cares?

Eric Kendricks had kind of a rough night missing quite a few tackles. the big one being on Perkins screen which was the most explosive play for the Giants tonight. He had a chance to redeem himself with an interception opportunity but dropped it. I hope Harrison Smith gave him #### for that, looked like he was. Still despite that great defense all game.

Got to give the Giants offensive line credit as they did a pretty good job of protecting Eli most of the game.

Nice to see Charles Johnson contribute with a couple big catches, Patterson was more involved as well.

It usually didn't look like much but McKinnon had 85 yards on 18 carries against a good run defense giving us some balance on offense finally.

Jerimiah Sirles taking over at RT did a pretty good job for the most part.

The offense was creative giving the Giants a lot of different looks and things to account for.

Great team win as 9 different players had receptions. everyone getting involved except for Treadwell.

I was worried about the Giants receivers who are very good, but the game plan and coverage was excellent all night. The defense has answers. Bring on the Texans next week.

Love the mistake free play from the offense. They seem to be playing out of the shotgun a lot which they couldn't really do with Peterson. It's working right now

Packers fan here congratulating you guys on the state of your team right now. That defense makes other teams' offense just suck out loud. And Bradford looks like an inspired signing. Thought you were done and dusted after losing Bridgewater and ADP but you've rallied well. Really miss the rivalry of yesteryear and it looks like it's back in a big way. Good luck the rest of the way.

Missed it by 1 point.

As I said after the Bradford trade.. he didn't have to come in and carry the team, he just needed to come in and play "Brad Johnson" like which he has done.

DonnyDowner after 2 quarters of the 1st game.. "Eagles GM is laughing his A$# off at the trade he made as it could be a top 5 pick"....

Since then       ..    ;)

I saw Clemmings miss one pass blocking assignment pretty badly but I did not notice anything else that was too bad. I also liked his speed to the outside run blocking on one of the toss plays to McKinnon.

Jerimiah Sirles did a good job at RT or at least I didn't notice him missing any blocks badly. He played pretty well at LG when Boone went out last week too. I thought he played better than Boone did at guard and played better than Smith at tackle. Pretty impressed. Never seen him play before the last couple weeks.

Looking forward to watching this game again to see if I just missed some of his mistakes.

I agree with Andy that the offensive line seems to be getting better, although it is a pretty low bar because they were pretty terrible the first couple of weeks. I hope they continue getting better.

They did a couple of unbalanced formations that I would like to take another look at. Unless I missed something it looked like Rudolph was playing right tackle with two tackles on the left side? One of them TE eligible? I am sort of doubting what I saw there however which is why I am asking. Did anyone else see that as well?
