***Official MLB 2013 Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Atlanta's pitcher (#42) just went down like a sniper got him.

Then a bunch of guys wearing #42 rushed over to help him out.

Their name escapes me, partly because it's a painful memory, but who were the two big FAs Colorado signed about a decade ago that were epic flops???
Mike Hampton

Oliver Perezish is what's going on here.
Denny Neagle was the other. Hampton had an 8 year 121 million dollar contract while Neagle had just the 5 year 51 million contract. Hampton's contract would still be big in today's standard while Neagle's was a bit more manageable.
To be fair, Hampton was a pretty good hitter (when healthy).

For those of you with HBO, Real Sports had a good piece tonight about the Marlins screwing over their fans.

Here's a highlight:

David Samson: "We're sorry."

Phils/Reds game will be tied at 0-0 into tomorrow. It will be bottom 9 and game will resume tomorrow night at 5:30. I'm sure there is some historical significance to this that Kurkjian or someone else can tell me.

Paul Konerko still getting it done. One of the most underrated players of our time? Or is he not good enough to be underrated? Just seems to me he's been pretty good for a really long time, but never great. Overshadowed by the roiders, but always gets the job done. Either way, much respect for Paul.

He's definitely good enough to be underrated

Konerko has had an OPS+ over 100 for 13 of the past 14 seasons...he's going to end up close to 500 career homers and about 1500 RBI with a career BA of .270-.280

He's a first ballot member of the Hall of Very Good with an outside shot at the HOF

Reminds me of a 70s 1B like Cepeda or Perez

I believe one of Tommy Lasorda's last official acts was to deal a very young Konerko to the Reds for Jeff Shaw.

Shaw delivered a couple of pretty good closer seasons, but overall that trade looks very bad for the Dodgers (although not as bad as Pedro Martinez for Delino Deshields).

 Cool. Just seems like you never hear anything about him, and he quietly goes out and puts up his numbers year in, year out. I'm sure the Chi Sox fans appreciate him, I'm just not sure he gets the national love/respect he might deserve.

I pass on him every year for my fantasy team and I regret it every year.

:goodposting: Same here, thats actually the reason i brought him up, doesnt even get the proper respect in fantasy either it seems, at least he hasnt in our league. But I finally took him as a backup this year and he's already in my starting lineup. (pts league, even better  )

Dear Cleveland,

Just put Kipnis on the DL already. We know it's coming. You know it's coming.

Signed,

Kipnis/Lawrie owners with a newly opened DL slot they need to fill.

P.S. Do you have the address to Miami's front office?

WTF is going on with Matt Cain?
I draft him because he's so damn steady every year, this is very discouraging.
How is it possible to give up 7 earned runs on 6 hits, no walks, no errors and no hit batsmen?

Cain is a flyball pitcher. I haven't seen the replays but maybe those 3 HRs would be long outs in SF.

Thanks, missed that in the box score.

Hope it left a mark.

If the wind downtown Cleveland is like it is on the east side, it's blowing out today, pretty hard too - and it's unseasonably warm.

Dickey has a back injury/stiffness. Trainer has been out a couple times and he looks uncomfortable. 64 pitches and only 2 hits allowed through 6 but he may not go back out next inning...
