People talk about the reasons for Saints slump, whether it was the draft or FA busts, or coaching, etc. It was everything.
Everything works together. Bad drafts lead to forcing big FA signings to fill holes, big $ + high risk. FA carries almost same risk as draft
You can trace it back. Saints had 6 or less draft picks from 08-2010 due to trades. Less resources. Plus draft misses.
You also had the final 8 rule in 2010 due to uncapped year. Had to make roster work.
Culminated in 2011, when Saints had 27 free agents and had to sign them all in August, when the new CBA was finally signed after the lockout
By that point, Saints maybe had 5 or 6 players from the previous 3 drafts that were worth a damn. (Nicks, Jenks, Graham, Ellis, Morestead)
2011 season was the peak. 2012 off season, time to pay the man Brees after having him for 6 years at 10M. Nicks, Colston, slated for FA
Defense is old. Harper resigned too late. Vilma knees gone. Porter gone. #91 no longer a factor.
If you draft well, you have someone to takeover for Vilma instead of paying Lofton $25M. And maybe you can pay Nicks. Or replace him cheaply
Then the league drops the Bounty hammer. Two second round picks forfeited. A 2012 1st gone due to Ingram trade.
Saints try to draft better the next few years, but too many holes+old roster. Not enough resources.
Hopes set on guys like Victory Butler
Fooled themselves into thinking they were a player or 2 away after 2013. Pull up the Brinks truck for Byrd. Rebuild should've been focus.
Went through a soft rebuild following, almost like there were 2 philosophies in the building. One side rebuild, other win now.
Trading guys like Stills, Sproles and Graham to "build the defense" yet signing guys like Browner... Spiller. Drafting SJB's and ####.
So now they've blown up the Scouting Dept. The financial situation is still year to year but better. Been more patient on draft day.
Blown up the coaching staff outside of the top. Letting young guys contribute. It will be interesting. Is it too little too late?
Oh, forgot about the coaching. Consistently had no vision on defense. Completely lost on that side of the ball.
Gregg Williams outta hear. Lets get back to fundamental football and hire SpagNOLA. One of the worst defenses in NFL History.
Sean reinstated from suspension. 1st thing? Get Spags outta here. "We're changing to a 3-4 defense" because Yes. Hire Mr. Rob .
The 3-4 didn't work because of our roster. But Rob coached a solid defense in 2013. But Seahawks set the standard for dominant defense.
Then Sean Payton wanted to be the Seahawks defense. Lets get big corners and a rangy free safety. Signed Byrd. Drafted SJB. Reuped Klew.
